Episode Recap: "Hate is Safer Than Love"
Finally, after weeks of static, something actually happened with the Peyton-Lucas-Lindsey triangle. And it wasn’t pretty.
At the beginning of the episode, Lucas’ pals Skills and Brooke were feeding him the same old lines, telling him not to give up on Lindsey. But they really weren’t helping him by giving him this false hope. Then Lindsey called him, out of the blue, during halftime of the big game (great timing, Linz). She told him that she was dating someone else. Next thing you know, Lucas is a madman on the floor, giving his team an angry pep talk and showing a temperamental side of himself that resembles Dan and Nathan. That kid from the other team was really out of line acting on his coach’s orders to hurt Quentin’s one good hand, but Lucas was the adult and had no business grabbing him. So Luke was thrown out of the game and Nathan told him what he finally needed to hear: "You can’t wait around forever. Maybe it’s time to move on." Thank you, Nathan. Finally! Someone had to say it.
As painful as that was for Lucas, it wasn’t as venomous as what he slurred to Peyton after she got her drunk ex home: "Peyton, I hate you. I wish you never came back and ruined my life." Ouch. What a jerk. He writes a second book about his love for her, then blames her for ruining his relationship with Lindsey, taking no personal responsibility for that. (And that scene from last week’s preview of Peyton undressing him was nowhere to be found, though I’m sure it would have taken place right before she out him to bed and gently kissed him on the forehead.) This sad scene wasn’t how I had hoped things would go for Lucas and Peyton, but hey, at least something happened. Seeing him go ballistic on the basketball court was kind of a welcome change – it snapped him out of his constant moping. I guess Lucas is going to have to hit rock bottom now before he redeems himself.
And speaking of the Ravens game, I was proud of Mouth for not using that damaging footage of Lucas. He was in a tough spot, because he let his bosses down, but they would have only exploited the situation. Instead, Mouth chose to be a good friend and destroyed the tape.
Haley thought she destroyed Jamie’s card to Dan last week, but sure enough, the little tyke found it in the trash and was quite hurt. Upset enough to run away. (Where was he going? Looking for Dan?) Thank goodness Haley was the person in that car that pulled alongside little Jamie – the tot was just kidnapped a few weeks ago, they can’t allow that to happen to him again. Haley’s scene on the playground with Jamie where she promised to be more truthful to him was quite sweet (and almost as cute as a caped Jamie on his scooter helping Nathan get back into shape). Also poignant: Jamie’s declaration about Dan: "Everyone should have a friend."
It’s good to see that Deb has found a new friend in cyberspace. That scene with Nathan catching her flashing her new Internet friend was funny, as was their awkward conversation afterwards. I thought for sure that her new mystery pal was going to turn out to be Dan, but to my surprise it was Skills! Sitting there with a rose like he was The Bachelor. And so that kiss between two people you wouldn’t expect? Deb and Skills. And apparently they weren’t stopping at a kiss.
Meanwhile, it looks like Brooke has found a new friend in Dr. Copeland, Angie’s surgeon. The surgery went well, and though the hot doc was reluctant to give her his first name, he eventually broke down that wall and told her his name with Ethan. I really hope the writers allow a relationship to develop between these two, instead of drawing Brooke back into that Lucas and Peyton (and Lindsey) mess as the previews hinted at (hopefully, the previews did that just to mislead).
I’m also hoping that they’re misleading us into thinking that Dan will do anything to jump to the number one position on the heart-donor list – including murder a reverend! Please, do not let Dan kill again. I couldn’t take that. With Keith, Dan did believe that his brother tried to kill him. I’m not excusing his actions, but knowing that helps understand his motivation. If Dan kills this reverend, then he’s just a cold-blooded murderer with no redeeming qualities.
Part of me thought they were going to kill Mia off in an accident last night and have Dan somehow get her heart. Only because she was so happy and everyone kept telling her how great it was that she was so successful. That reminded me of how happy Keith was just before his untimely death. Happiness always seems to come with a price in Tree Hill. Luckily, peppy Mia made it through the night unharmed, and the only dangerous mishap of the night was Dan nearly getting hit on the head with a water balloon dropped by Haley and Peyton (if only their aim had been a little bit better...).
Next week, the season finale!

Great recap Jennifer as always. The promo was really misleading. Instead of having sex, Lucas told Peyton he hates her. Now it's me who hates him. He wrote another book about her but he hates her. Season 5 is a waste. You know what i'm done with this show, I should stop watching this crap. Congratulations mister schwan. You're really the worst writer in the world. How do you bet next week we're gonna have a cliffhanger?

Lucas is turning into such a whiny jerk. I'm tired of this Lindsey storyline. They have no chemistry and frankly, the actress reminds me of a robot the way she delivers her lines. I can't believe he was cruel to Peyton, and also, hello! He tried to beat up a teenager! It doesn't matter that he is really only a few years older, he is a coach and he crossed the line, big time.
Dan is still the scum of the earth, but I really thought it was going to be him that Deb was cyber-stripping with.. Skills needs some lovin' too.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this season. I'm thankful for the flash forward, because what else could they really do in high school.. but I'm also tired of all this Grandpa Dan stuff, the same storyline for Mouth over and over again, and everyone else just generally being an idiot and living with their lives set on repeat.

When I saw Skills close his laptop I had a slight feeling it was Deb he was looking at online!! Them sleeping together tho..WOW!! Didn't see that coming. Well she is a MILF so good for him. Lucas was harsh tho to Peyton...when I 1st saw him drinking I had a feeling he was at Tric. I love One Tree Hill for their ability to tie the character's storylines & reality together. Haley went on tour with Chris Keller while in reality Bethany went on tour with Tyler Hilton. Mia is doing the Starburst tour while in reality Kate Voegele is doing the Starburst tour. I did like how they showed the different events at the beginning & did the flashback.

Does the creator even know that he won't find a job on any show or movie after that? Such a poor writing again this week. I'm rooting for Lucas & Peyton but clearly Lucas doesn't deserve Peyton anymore. He is just a coward. That girl is so gorgeous and full of courage (I'm a guy and I think I sort of fell in love with her). Lucas used to be my favorite character but it's Peyton now.

Ok, my TIVO messed up last night and I didn't get the first 20 minutes of the show. Glad I missed Jamie running away, but with Haley throwing away his card to Dan, it was a given he would find it and run away. I can't blame her for tossing it, but any smart mom knows, if you throw away a child's artwork, pile other garbage on top!! I am scared to death that Dan will kill again!! He looked so evil in that reverend's hospital room!! I am hating Lucas, but at least he has another emotion besides self pity! Too bad, it is always someone else's fault and not his! Lindsey was his rebound girl and no one marries the reboud girl! He is just stupid, but which ever girl he calls with tickets to Vegas, if it is Peyton, she had better not go!! The only way Brooke would go, is if baby Angie goes home, or dies and she is in despair. They had better not kill off that baby! No way they redeem the show if that happens. I know Lyndsey (I still hear that song, Lyndsey, man faced Lyndsey... Peyton sang in the library!!)

Great Recap! this show just keep geting more lame! seriously! skills and deb?! that was disgusting and it shouldn't have been put on the screen. just no! with eaching passing episode im hating lucas more and more! talk about character assisination! and all because of lindsey! when you think shes gone she still has her way of reappearing. i dont know what the writers are thinking, for the first twelve episodes no one was buying that lucas was in love with lindsey and now all of a sudden he is?! you can tell that this out of nowhere pinning was the result of them getting these extra episodes and they had no idea what to do with them so they are drawing out the story lines. the writers definitely dropped the ball with this half of the season!!! i dont think this whole season is worthy of me buying it on DVD. i cant believe lucas said IHY to peyton..who does he think he is?! she ruined his life?! i dont think he's ever going to accept responsibility for any of his actions. I feel so bad for Peyton! cut her a break, this whole season she has been a mess! and you are right adding Brooke to LLP thing is ridiculous. i definitely think thats a mislead! im starting to hate this show!

The way OTH does its completly misleading previews Lucas could be calling Skills and none of those girls for all we know!
I can't imagine Brooke would go with him obv because of baby Angie and because Peyton is her best friend, too.
I, too thought Dan was going to smother the Reverend at the end!
I wonder how Nathan is going to react to Skills and his mom! I can't imagine well! If Skills wants to spend more time with Jamie becoming his step-grandpa isn't the way to do it!

Lucas is SUCH a douche. Seriously. His actions tonight were inexcusable. And not only did we already have the "coach grabs an opposing team player" storyline on Friday Night Lights, but that coach's wife was DYING. While there's no excuse to grab a student, Lucas's reasoning pales in comparison.
And what he said to Peyton - unbelievable! He's such a jerk. She CANNOT go back to him. She deserves so much better. (I'd like to see her with Skills!) Lucas is the one who tried to rush her, then left her even though she didn't break up with him, but merely asked him to wait. And then HE writes another book about her. She has nothing to do with his ruined life. He ruined it himself by trying to deny that he still loved her in the first place and by being a GIANT TOOL in general.
He could leave the show this season and I would be glad.

I to was afraid Dan might kill the minister so he can get the next heart instead I have a theory about what might happen. In the preview Lucas calls someone Lindsay?Peyton? Brooke? and ask them to meet him at the airport. I feel like it is lindsay and in her rush to the airport she will be killed in an accident thus Dan will get her heart since we know they aren't going to kill off Brooke or Peyton. so lindsay will "live on' inside of Dan oh the horor! Lindsays heart inside the father Lucas hates the man who killed hsi surrogate father keith major angst for Luczas coming jsut my guess.
Can't believe after jamie almost drowning in the pool, almost getting hit by a car and being kidnapped cause they weren't watching him jamie leaves the house walking to Grandpa Dan's all alone. I think Deb isn't a very good nanny she 's busy flashing her boobs on the internet instead of watching jamie but nathan is to blame too. Two adults in the house and neither of them noticed that the small child in the house was missing!

I agree with everybody above: Another great recap of a otherwise dull episode!!! I do not know why they are trying to make Lucas into this imbecile, I feel like I am being forced to hate him by the writers. I have no problem with Skillz and Deb hooking up, they are both single and Deb is a complete MILF, I have always thought she was so hot on this show (she' starting to show her age though) I hope that Peyton and Luke do get married in Vegas so we don't have go through the agony of Lucas being a idiot/jerk anymore!

Is it me or has the Deb "horny-ness" factor gone up with each ep she's in? First the creepy clown and now Skillz! Really? Just ewww...
I agree that Lucas is turning into a very ugly character, but I rather it be jerk Lucas than mopey Lucas any day.

I hated this episode, and if next week is the same I am done watching. The only part I liked was Mouth being a good friend to Lucas and destroying the tape. That was really touching. Other than that- the misleading promo made me mad and Lucas being so nasty to Peyton REALLY made me mad. If they throw Brooke into the Lindsey-Peyton-Lucas triangle...that would just be ridiculous. I'm tired of Lucas moping around about Lindsey- he has gone past the point of normalcy into creepy obsession. But turning into a hateful, angry jerk isn't much of an improvement.

thanks for the recap.my god!i cant take lucas anymore!i hate him so much,u cant even imagin!idiot, your life is ruined cause you were with lindsy while u still were in love with peyton, and finally lindsy realized it(even though u didnt yourself).i cant beilive he actually told peyton that he hates her! unbeliveable!i agree with everyone,he never takes responsibility of his own actinos and he blames peyton!poor peyton i loved lucas's character, but this season, god i just wanna kill him!and despite this, before this episod i really wanted to them to get back together cause im a huge leyton fan,but now i just can say he certainly doesnt deserve her.plz bring someone new for peyton,at least for a while.she is in such a huge desperation, and i really love her.and if they going to put them back together,it shouldnt be like because luke didnt have anyone else or anything better to do he gets back with peton, like because he cant have linsey he have to go with peyton.and before this he needs a real punishment from life for his behavior towards peyton.and some one up there made a good point that said he didnt love lindsy in first 12 episodes, and now all of a sudden he does?that doesnt make any sense!i mean couldnt they fill these last episodes with something better or at least convinsing?i dont think it was hard, hello! they r writters.and i think some of lucas's memory is destroied, that part that he wrote his second book about peyton(while he was with lindsy!).i loved this show but now im beginig to hate it.because they r questionig our undrestandings! any way,i heared somewhere that the revernt himself, wanted to dan have the heart that suppos to be given him.and i also heared the person that lucas want to go with to vegas is brook, cause as someone said the baby must go home or dies, and she is in despair.i just really hope they r not goona add her to this lucas/lindsy/peyton mess, cause it doesnt make any sense, she had enough of lucas two times before.she and the dr would be great togheter, and these two were the only thing the i love about this episode,i hated the other things.i dont know but if they really want to keep the viewers they need to do something so soon!and i really hope and pray that the season 6 would be the last season, because this show is getteing ruined by going on,and its gonna lose a lot of viewrs.and seeson five was such a waste!(specially the episodes after the wedding!)

I think everyone needs to back off of Lucas. I agree that his basketball scene was ridiculous and it was stupid to have Lindsay call during halftime, but hes allowed to be a little mopey. Of course he's going to get drunk at Tric, there's nowhere else in Tree Hill to go. Clearly Lindsay is over him though, only a few weeks after leaving him at the alter shes with someone new? She's just insecure and can't have Payton around. Payton's been super mopey up until this episode too so their characters need to get a little happier.
And please, I'm soooo sick of Dan! I hated him on the show before and I hate him even more now (I didn't even know it was possible). I'm sick of how he keeps stalking around, following his son and grandson, threatening people and constantly reminding them that he is a murderer and he killed his brother in cold blood. Do they not have any cops in Tree Hill? And what kind of government do they have where a murdered gets out after only 4 years? Good behavior or not, thats insane. Does he not have restrictions on going to the high school where he shot Keith? He was the freaking mayor, it's not like people don't know who he is. His whole story line is awful and I just want him off the show.
