Episode Recap: "Crying Won't Help You Now"

"You’re dead to so many of us already, Dan. So really what does it matter?" And with that, Lucas wins the best coldhearted line of the night. (Nathan won it last week, again while speaking to Dan about his "bad heart.") Lucas told Dan that he verified his story about having only six months to live. And he told him that he really doesn’t care.

I can’t help but cheer on the Scott boys whenever they keep reminding Dan that what he did was unforgivable. As Nathan put it a little more delicately this week: "I’m sorry that you’re dying...but I can never forgive you. Not now, not ever....You made that decision the moment you pulled that trigger." And yet, I don’t want Dan off this show, because he brings so much to it. Being a Dan Scott fan is a tough spot to be in.

"James Lucas Scott, age 5," is a fan of Dan’s, and he desperately wants to know his grandfather better. That thank-you note he made Dan was so heartfelt. But Dan’s never going to get a chance to see it since Haley trashed it. I really can’t blame her and Nathan for being afraid to let Jamie get close to Dan – he’s a manipulator and a murderer after all. But he’s also tenacious, so I don’t think that he’s going to give up on the goal of trying to get his family back.

The theme of not giving up permeated most of tonight’s story lines. Quentin was ready to throw in the towel (once again), but Nathan convinced him not too (once again). Last time it was a pride issue with Q. This time, it was an injury mixed with a pride issue. Nate made a great point about how every time you punch somebody, it’s for selfish reasons. Then Nathan wisely opened up Q’s eyes to the idea of reinventing his game and learning to play differently. And Jamie pointed out to Skills the value of shooting only 3s and not 2s. This combined knowledge led to the Ravens getting a new point guard: Quentin. Q finally apologized to Skills, and in a nice reciprocal move, Q made a deal with Nate that he would help him get his game back too. Just don’t call it a "comeback," or you’ll piss Nathan off.

After completely choking on camera, Mouth made a quick comeback thanks to Millicent’s support and belief in him. They then reached the point in their relationship where they were able to say those important three little words to each other (Mouth having them put on the teleprompter was a creative touch). Also, Mouth now has a nice, helpful (male) boss, who’s so different from that bitchy (female) boss who made him sleep with her to get ahead. Nice use of stereotypes.

Speaking of work matters, Brooke had some trouble balancing motherhood with her job, especially when it came time for her to do a presentation. Her solution? Bring the baby with her. At first this came off as really unprofessional, but then she revealed that her latest creation was a line of clothes was designed for infants: Baby Brooke. (If she had planned it a little better, Angie could have been wearing one of the designs – how cute would that have been?!) But the important thing to take from this story was that Brooke did not give up – not even when those executives initially suggested that she reschedule the presentation. And she didn’t give up on trying to get Angie to smile, and she was successful at that too. (Side question: Think there’s any chance Brooke will date Angie’s hot, young heart surgeon? He was really cute.)

Last but not least, we have Lucas and Peyton, who are both acting like a broken record. Lucas is still not giving up on Lindsey, though she clearly has given up on him, having declined his hopeful invitation for a video chat. Then Peyton went all the way up to New York City to tell Lindsey that she believes Lucas still loves her. (Why can’t she and Lucas leave this poor girl alone? She’s hundreds of miles away from them, yet still they bother her.) Lindsey insisted that Peyton read manuscript, and when she finally did, she was in tears. So what does this mean? Is this what finally leads Lucas and Peyton to that scene we got to see in the previews for next week? Is that a real scene or is someone having a dream? I hope it’s real, because they can’t keep dragging this story out and teasing us this way.

I think One Tree Hill gets better every week. I am conflicted on the Dan issue. On one hand Dan did murder someone, his own brother and Lucas and Nathan's uncle. That is something that can never be taken back and Dan should suffer for what he did. On the other hand Dan is dying and I don't think that it's healthy to go through life with a heart full of bitterness and Nathan and Lucas are both doing that.

I felt really bad for Dan when he was denied his dying wish and when Haley trashed the thank you note. I don't see the harm in Jamie getting to know Dan when it's only for six months. If they are terribly worried that Dan is a bad influence than they can supervise or limit the visits. But I think that Jamie deserves to have the chance to get to know Dan before it's too late.

As much as I like Lucas and Brooke's friendship, am I the only one who feels it's a little forced? Wouldn't Peyton be the better choice for all the things that Lucas did with Brooke? And is it really that easy to just hop on a plane to New York? Lucas and Peyton are just going to visit Lindsay like it's right around the corner. And jeez I wish that they would just leave that girl alone and let her move on with her life. I am glad that Peyton will finally get to read the book and see what we all know is true.

Next week looks promising, it better not be a dream sequence.

I agree that they need to leave Lindsay alone. I mean, Jeez. Lucas has told her how he feels and he (and Peyton need to stop stalking her). Oh, and yes, even though Tree Hill is this tiny little town, apparently yes, Peyton can just hop a quick (and presumably direct) flight to NYC.

One other nitpick -- do you really think the doctor's appointment would have been at 7pm? I know cardiologist and cardiac surgeons, and yes, they work late hours, but they don't have appointments then! Of course, if I am going to nitpick, when these civic groups arrange for a child to come over here for medical care. usually at least one parent comes too, and is provided with a place to stay. Find it hard to believe they would place a sick child with a 22-year old, non-mother, full-time career gal, unless the mother came too.

Great recap! You put it best when you said it's hard being a Dan fan. I love the actor, but the character..to me there is no redemption. I was so happy and proud of Nathan for not giving in. No matter how pitful Dan acts, I am really glad for that last scene between him and Nathan where Nathan told him I am sorry your dying but I can never forgive you for it. I was afraid that Haley and him were going to let little Jamie see Dan but that didn't happened.

You also said it best with the broken record going on between Lucas and Peyton. Can I say again how much Peyton and Lindsey look alike? But come on, Peyton traveling all the way to New York to talk to Lindsey..Leave the girl alone.

They need to find a man for Peyton. Maybe Brooke's cute doctor? Bring chase back for Brooke.

It's tough being a Q fan too, because one minute I like him and the next I can't stand him. I do love his scenes with Jamie though.

Although, I love Mouth, his scenes bore me. I think they should spice it up and have skills like Millicent or something to that nature. I just want skills to have a storyline.

One last thought, where in the world is Haley's parents??? Does Jamie even know he has other grandparents. Why weren't they at this birthday party? No mention of them at all...

Anyways, good show tonight.

This is the first post-strike episode of OTH that I have actually enjoyed. It's largely due to the fact that Peyton is my favorite character and it's been hard to enjoy her since 512.
I loved all of her scenes. Loved the awkward BLP scene, BP feeding Angie, and HP in the studio. It's interesting that Haley mentioned Peyton's real dad. I have a feeling we'll be seeing him before the end of the series. But, I'm confused on what they're doing with Haley. Every week she switches between team LL and team LP. She needs pick a side and stick with it!

I agree that the BL scenes are incredibly forced, and I think that's just due to the actors feeling uncomfortable with each other. It's painful to watch. I can't wait until this baby story line is over.

I loved the coda! "Twenty Years" by Augustana is such a great song and a perfect song for Lucas right now as he is "on a path that's leading him no where" with Lindsey. I'm glad they finally brought Lucas' book back into play. I'm a little uneasy about Peyton reading that book without Lucas' knowledge though. I really don't think he's to be happy about that. However, Peyton's reaction upon reading the book was heart breaking. I hope she can now see what everyone else sees. I have a feeling a break-through for Lucas is right around the corner.

I'm calling it now, putting my hand on it, that the preview for next week involved Lucas being drunk and Peyton coming to his rescue, much like Brooke did with him when he lost Peyton 3 years before. Falling onto the bed? Lucas is heavy, Peyton's practically dragging him to bed. Unbuttoning his shirt and saying, "Ok...we can do this..." is NOT really sexy talk, you know? I think she's just trying to get his uncomfortable clothes off. I'm calling that she means they can do this, no awkwardness, no desire, and that she's probably talking more to herself than to him.

I just think that's what the writers are going to do...trick us Leyton Lovers into believing that something will happen...and maybe it will, maybe Lucas will kiss Peyton the way he kissed Brooke...but I don't think that the preview we saw means sex or anything truly intimate with these two. So...I'm calling it. ;)

The rest of the episode...eh...it was fine, but I was also kind of irked about the random New York scene...um, what? What purpose did that serve, just so Lindsay would give Peyton the book so she could read it? Isn't there a better way at all to have done that? Like another poster said, Tree Hill is a small town, and NYC is NOT just a couple of hours away or anything...I just think it's silly. And leave her alone! Poor girl.

The boys were cold blooded tonight...*wipes forehead* Luke's line was just...man, right to the heart. Not that Dan doesn't deserve it, but I tried to put myself in Dan's shoes. Can't really do it because I'm not a despicable human being, but I could feel his heartache and regret and hatred of himself.

I thought the "I love you" thing was kind of funny. Cute, absolutely...but I even said to my boyfriend two weeks ago when she moved in, "You would think they'd have at least said 'I love you' first..." I guess I thought that Millie coming to live with Mouth when those words (at the very least) hadn't been exchanged (not to mention I thought they'd only been dating a couple of months) it was kind of strange. But whatever. Not saying you have to be married or even engaged in order to live together, I just at least would think the relationship was at least on a serious enough level to say those three words. Ahhh, tv.

ok,great recap as always,thanks jennifer
i dont think dan is going to die,i think
he i going to get a new heart.
mouth and millicent are so cute.
im so glad that peyton finally realized
that lucas is still in love with her.and its so good to see that writers didnt forget about the book and comet thing, cause i was beginig to think that i dreamed it!what i still dont undrestand is why lucas act like he was in love with lindsy in the first plac,
why cant he admit that he still has feelings for peyton??you r right jennifer, they better end this storyline and stop teasing us this way.and
i really have a bad feeling about brooks friendship with lucas,im afraid it is going to turn a relationship again, and if so(which i really hope not)it doesnt make any sense.cause how can u trust a guy who let u down twice for another girl?brook should know better than anyone, that his heart is with peyton,as always.and bytheway brook moved on with him long time ago.and beside all of these PLB triangle has gotten too old,
been there, done that, twice.so,i really hope the writers wont put these two together, cause its unreallistic and its not logical.and i thinke sophia and chad arent so comfortable with their characters being so close.but i like a boyfriend for brook, someone like the doctor or chase, anyone but lucas.and i know that the scene next week,is much less than we expect, but i really hope it wont be a daydreaming

Good episode. I am a Peyton fan so I am ready for to move on. Regardless of Lucus' book and the unearthed deep down love for Peyton Lucas is still activitly pursuing another woman so it is time to move on.

Concerning Haley, I am not a fan of hers so everything she does bugs me. I understand her not wanting Jaime to form a relationship with Dan but she needs to figure out a way to explain that to her child and not lie to him and make him draw a card to Dan that she was never planning on giving Dan. This will only lead to Jaime not trusting her and in light of the nanny Carrie issue, she should be more careful.

Tried of Nathan and Quinton talking in circles they have the same converation every episode and give each other advise they themselves should be taking. We get it they are both selfish basketball greats, lets move on.

Mouth and Millie are adorable. Brooke recovered nicely at the presentation but she is rich she could have found a suitable babaysitter.

I agree with the person who said that next week's preview is not what it seems. I also think that Lucas is drunk and that Peyton is just helping him to bed. There was nothing sexy about that clip. Lucas never even touched Peyton. OTH has a history of making their promos very deceiving.

I am a huge Lucas and Peyton fan, but this is getting really old. Peyton should be happy that Lindsay won't take Lucas back. It was very unrealistic for someone in Peyton's position to go visit her true love's ex to convince her to take him back. (Especially since she had to fly across the country to do it).
At this point, I don't even care if Leyton gets back together. I think Peyton and Skills should hook up...they would be cute and fun together....and we'd get to see more of Skills.

I think that Naley are going to give in and let Dan spend time with Jamie. I also think that Dan will survive this. He has almost died three times already....I don't think they'll ever kill him off. He just brings too much to the show. He is really good at being bad. I hate Dan, but the show wouldn't be the same without him.

I bet the promo was deceiving but I hope not. I really want Lucas and Peyton to FINALLY get back together!!

I think it's a little far fetched for Peyton to just show up to see Lindsay, but it's not as impossible as everyone is making it sound. In the real world the flight from NC to NYC is less than 2 hours, almost always direct, and there are lots of options, so it would be possible for Peyton to make the trip, just not practical. OTH always plays with the geography of NC, messes with time, and gets really confused about just how small the town is - I'm from a small town in NC, similar to the image the show tries to portray, there are all kinds of things in terms of stores and services that just shouldn't be there... but there are. It shouldn't be that hard to believe that Peyton hopped on a flight.

This episode was very weird. Poor Brooke. I think it tore her up when she found out what was going to have to happen with Angie. That was a cool idea though for her new line of baby clothes.

I cannot believe Peyton! Why would she fly all the way to go see Lindsey? I agree they need to leave Lindsey alone.

I'm so happy to see Mouth and Millicent saying "I love you". IT was also really cute how she got him to not be so nervous.

I am glad Quentiin apologized to Skills. I'm also glad hes not quitting.

I am sad about the whole Dan situation, but I am glad that Nathan and Lucas didnt forgive him and do anything.
From the previews I wasnt sure if thats what Lucas was going to do or if he was going to scream at Dan.
I dont like Dan but it would be a very weird show without him.

Overall I liked the show. Except Peyton going to see Lindsey.

so i have four points about dan:

1. I think that part of the reason Haley through away the note was because, Jamie wrote "..i'm sorry you couldn't be at my birthday, but i hope you come to my next birthday and the one after that and the one after that" and since Dan only has 6 months to live, it might hurt him to see that. but thats just one way of looking at it.

2. And notice in the opening scene where Dan is putting in his tomb stone, his is right next to his brothers, and of course dan has to show his brother up by putting in a head stone at least 5x the size of Keith's with his face engraved in it. So even in death, Dan has beat Keith.

3. just when i thought dan might change his ways, when he met nathan at the river court he started critiquing his game and acting exactly like he did in seasons 1 and 2.

4. As much i hate dan, i still think that nathan should spend some time with him and be kind of nice to him, because i think he will regret not doing so once dan is gone. I can understand lucas not wanting to reconcile with dan, because dan killed the father figure in his life, and abandoned him as a child.

now i'm not sure how this whole peyton-lucas storyline is going to play out, but i'm just glad there is some glimmer of hope for us leyton fans lol and i really do hope that the love scene from the previews is not just a dream. and i am also hoping for some explanation about the book, i mean they have given us some details but its not enough to really understand what lindsey was talking about when she said "it's not me who has to make a decision about lucas, its you [peyton]"

*spoilerish*
there is some speculation about whether or not dan is going to die, or if he will receive a heart transplant, but i have read that there is car accident in the season 5 finale and that he might be involved (so may be he dies then? im really not sure) but i think that dan needs to die so everthing is at peace when the series ends, and season 6 will most likely be the end of one tree hill =(((((
