Episode Recap: "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side"

OK, last scene first. Because in a night full of surprises (Chase! Bevin!), Haley’s late-night phone call had my jaw dropping the most. After fulfilling her promise to be Lucas’ pre-editor, Haley picks up the phone to make a call as we hear Lucas’ voice-over about love and broken hearts mending. I thought for sure that something Lucas had written inspired her to melt a bit and call Nathan. Then when Lucas answered his cell I thought perhaps she was going to ask her best friend for some advice. I did not expect her to say, "You can’t marry Lindsey." What?! Is this the same woman who’s been singing Lindsey’s praises all season long? The same woman who was telling Peyton a few episodes ago that Lucas fell in love while waiting for her and that Peyton shouldn’t ruin that? So, did Lucas write another book in which his love for Peyton comes shining through, because clearly something he wrote changed Haley’s mind.

I wish she would have changed her mind regarding Nathan, but sadly we didn’t get much resolution on that front. Thanks to Lucas and Lindsey’s sneaky plan to make their bachelor and bachelorette parties a combo event, Nate and Hales were finally talking – and in a calm tone, not yelling at one another. But it’s not like all is forgiven yet. Instead, Haley’s now putting the blame on herself, saying she should have never tried to change Nathan to begin with, because he is who he is and he’s not capable of change. How the hell can she not see how Nathan is nothing like the obnoxious guy we first met in season 1? Aside from his occasional anger issues, he’s a completely different guy. But he’s also still quiet Nathan, and he said nothing to defend himself when Haley said all of that to him. I guess he was just too floored by it to respond.

As bad as I feel for Nathan and Haley, I feel even worse for little Jamie. So many sad Jamie scenes last night: turning his smiley-faced pancake into a frowny face; trying desperately to get mom and dad to play Rock Band with him; learning that "daddy's on a time out right now" and won’t be home anytime soon. During that scene near the end with Jamie and Nathan sitting together on his bed, a look came across Jamie’s face was just so heart wrenching. That little kid can really act.

Well, at least Jamie has Brooke and Skills, who both were there to comfort him and play with him during the party. I also liked Skills’ chat with Haley about how she and Nathan lost sight of things with Jamie, who was trying so hard to get them to be a family again. Haley needed to hear that. And of course, Skills was there for comic relief during the bunny scene. His former better half, Bevin, also made a surprise appearance. Unfortunately, she and Skills didn’t share any screen time and we learned no further details of their breakup. But we did learn she has a little boy named Nathan – yep, same name as Tim’s kid, and same picture. Bevin and Tim...who would have ever thought? Amusing, but I was always rooting for Bevin and Skills. Based on her "what happened to me" recap, Bevin didn’t stay in touch with any of the gang over the past four years. Odd, since she had become such a good friend. As glad as I was to see her, her appearance was all too brief and a little disappointing. She was always perky, but she was little over-the-top last night. And though she had gotten less flaky as the seasons progressed, she was back to being rather ditzy last night.

The high-school reunion wasn’t limited to just Bevin. Clean teen Chase also resurfaced, as Owen’s good buddy and Peyton’s blind date. I always liked Chase, so it was good to see him again. He got more screen time than Bevin – enough time for things to progress from awkward to fondly nostalgic between him and Brooke. It was cute how he kissed Peyton when he noticed Lucas was looking, and then Peyton returned the favor when Brooke was glancing over.

The reunion continued with Brooke’s new houseguest Rachel. While it was good thinking to keep Rachel away from the party, I have to question Brooke’s judgement in not insisting she go to rehab. I know that Tree Hill has an excellent rehab facility, because I remember Deb climbing out if the window trying to break out of it once. Of course Rachel faced an uphill battle trying to kick her bad habits on her own, but then being dealt a one-two punch by Mouth and Victoria was just too much for her. First, Mouth wouldn’t sleep with her (aww, he really cares for Millicent!). Yet he did leave Rachel with some good advice about how she needs to believe in herself and realize that she matters. Sadly, any confidence she tried to muster was annihilated by Victoria, who called her a junkie and told her deep down they both knew she wouldn’t beat this thing. Exactly what Rachel didn’t need to hear. Sure enough, Rachel was soon gone, and she took a wad a Brooke’s money with her.

This led to a scene that was a long time coming: Brooke finally fired her mom. Victoria was particularly condescending last night, having meetings without Brooke and telling her (in front of Owen, no less) that things were "Way over your head..... Go play – it’s what you do best." Brooke kept taking crap like this from her all season, so it was very satisfying to hear Brooke finally tell her off and explain that a daughter shouldn’t have to earn her mother’s love, that it should be unconditional. This concept was obviously over Victoria’s head.

Speaking of beloved parents, Dan’s out! There was no interaction between him and his sons yet, as Dan was busy shopping for a basketball and understandably hooking up with a random salesgirl after nearly five years in prison. But I’m sure we won’t have to wait long for some Scott family bonding. Next week: Lucas and Lindsey’s wedding, which I’m sure will go smoothly...right? Can’t wait!

Hang out with the gang from One Tree Hill anytime in our Online Video Guide.

How fantastic was this episode! I spent an hour in my room screaming at almost everything in that happened. Bevin and Tim! Victoria canned! Haley going against Lucas and Lindsay! Chase! I was floored the entire episode. And how great is Jackson as Jamie trying to re-create the family scene he saw in what I'm assuming was a party city store. This was an hour well spent as usual. I can wait until next week (again...as usual).

Favorite line of the episode is hard to pick but I'd have to go with Rachel's, " I'm barely clean and I'm so not a teen."

I was in shock most of the episode. I was laughing when Bevin showed up. It was funny all the things she said like Lucas and Brooke were the ones getting married (I wish)I thought that Chase was going to be Peytons blind date. It was funny how Rachel and Peyton were laughing while Brooke was freaking out a little. And then Chase told Owen that was the Brooke He was talking about. Owen learned alot more about Brooke then. I was sad and almost cried when Hayley wouldnt play Rock band with Jamie. It hurt him so much. He wants his family back together so badly! Poor Kid! I knew when Mouth went to go see Rachel she would try something. But she was so hurt that he turned her down! Aww poor Rachel. The Victoria had to come in and say EXACTLY what Rachel didnt need to hear. I wanted to slap Victoria across the face. She has been so mean to Peyton and Rachel and Brooke (and maybe other people those 3 stick out in my mind) I knew Rachel was either going to leave or start using again. I am so glad Brooke finally fired her. But it was heartbreaking at the same time. I was so surprised when Hayley made that call. I was praying she was calling Nathan to come back home. Then Lucas answered and then she said he cant marry Lindsey... Huh? That I am very confused on.

I cannot wait for next week!
Dan is going to just show up to The wedding apparently. That will not make Lucas happy at all. I wonder what will happen with Nathan and Hayley. And I think I saw Carrie in the previews too (not good!!!) I wonder what Lucas will say to Hayley about what she said to him.

Such a great episode!!! Definitely didn't see the whole Bevin & Tim hooking up in a million years thing...but hey it's life. That car scene where Chase was connecting the dots for Owen was hilarious...and Peyton & Chase kissing each other at two opportune moments. I wish Bevin & Tim could be introduced back into the One Tree Hill fold. Little Nathan can hang out with Little Jamie or something. There were so many other awesome moments in the episode.

All in all, can't wait for next week.
Karen & Lily are back. Dan is going to crash the wedding...& I think I did spot Carrie as well in the previews..oh oh

OTH's MVP award of the night goes to...Skills! Thank you Skills for giving Haley a much needed reality check! I hope his words of wisdom sunk in! Poor Jamie, he is too cute! And poor Nate sleeping on Lucas' couch!

I too was hoping Haley was calling Nathan to tell him she had come to her senses after reading Lucas' inspiring words about broken hearts and struggle! I am sooo curious to know what Luke will say to Haley (glad she came to realize Lucas is about to make a big mistake). Well hopefully next week we will see some progress in the Naley dept.

Brooke and Owen are so cute! It's good to see her happy and finally fire her mother! Good rittens Victoria! I was a little disappointed with the Bevin appearance but still it was good to see her and Chase :)

Can't wait to see Karen and Lily next week...and the big "wedding" wonder what will happen! We will be on a short hiatus so I'm sure we're in for some cliffhangers!! C-ya next week!

Very good show tonight! I loved how it ended too. Although, Hales is still becoming my least favorite character, and again, I hate to be picky but I love Brooke but I can't stand her voice. It is the worst it has ever been. It distracts me from her scenes, but I love her and Owen together. I was happy to see Chase back too. But Rachel, good riddance. I have never liked her character.
I am so happy that Brooke finally fired her hateful mother and I love the friendship between Peyton and Brooke.
I can not wait for next week!!

Awesome ep - - couldn't stop watching even for a second. Loved the scenes with the older characters, but Bevin's was way too short. At least they gave us some closure to her character. Did you notice we are not getting many flashbacks anymore. I wonder if they think we know all we need to know. Heard that we are going to be seeing more older faces next week - - one that I can't wait to see. At least one I wish was gone.

I am hoping that this wasn't the end of Racheal, but I was thrilled that Mouth held his ground. He and Millicent look great together (she reminds me a lot of GiGi) which is another face I would like to see.

The scenes with Jamie broke my heart and so did the scenes with Brooke and Victoria. At least Brooke finally stood up for herself and fired her Mom and I am so glad that Peyton was there for her this time. I am wondering how long Chase is going to be around (boy has he gotten hotter). I am very torn between "Brase" and "Browen". That could be a refreshing turn of events. I know that there are a lot of Brucas fans out there and for a long time I was one of them, but I think that Brooke may have actually out grown Lucas. Her relationship with Owen is so refreshing because she is really holding her own with him - - it is like they are equals.

Can't wait to see what next week has in store.

I really enjoyed this episode. It felt like old OTH with all the familar faces from the past and the Lucas voiceover at the end.

Loved
-Lucas/Nathan and Lucas/Peyton scenes on the RC.
-Brooke/Owen/Peyton/Chase
-Jamie
-Lucas is writing another book about Peyton! (or so it seems)

I can't wait for the 100th next week!

brittlong, good to know that it isn't Haley next week (hopefully) that says she wants to have Lucas' child....but just thinking into the future here...if Haley leaves Nathan, and Lucas "cares for" Jamie and Haley, that would make him an awful lot like Keith...he would be alone, except that he would always be a part of Haley's life, just like Keith was with Karen.

i know it's a stretch, but now they have a whole 'nother season to fill with drama, so who knows!! :)

Nathan and Haley's relationship is the backbone of the show and trust me it's not going anywhere. ;)

I have to agree with everyone and say the last scene was interesting. Hopefully Haley will finally knock some sense in Lucas. And I think Haley and Nathan will get back together. But who else finds it weird that Skills and Jamie are so close. I mean at the end of season 4, wasn't Skills going to some Div II school. Because he was supposed to play Nathan. So how did he get so close with Jamie if he was away at school. Plus until late in season 4, I never even saw Haley and Skills even interect. And it seems Jamie is closer to Skills than Lucas. And Lucas has been around. I guess they just need some kind of storyline for Skills. But I am looking forward to Karen returning and Lily. Karen is the only one who is really mature enough to talk to Lucas. Haley is so high and mighty now. But all in all, I can't wait for next week's episode.

A great episode. I feel bad for Jamie. I hope everything works out with Nathan and Haley.

"How the hell can she not see how Nathan is nothing like the obnoxious guy we first met in season 1? Aside from his occasional anger issues, he’s a completely different guy. But he’s also still quiet Nathan, and he said nothing to defend himself when Haley said all of that to him." I agree Nathan is nothing like he was in season one yes he still has a temper but he is different. I like Haley but she isn't perfect either. She has made some mistakes in their marriage. I felt bad for Nathan you can tell that he still really loves Haley by the way he looked at her at the party.

I thought the whole car scene with Brooke, Owen, Peyton and Chase was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing especially at Owens reactions. I like Owen and Brooke together.

Doesn't anyone think it will be really weird if it is Brooke in the Ausiello report.

Wow, what a season this has been! One Tree Hill is my favorite show and I am almost 25 and I don't care to admit it and last night proves why. Through the whole episode I was on the edge of the couch wondering what was going to happen next. So many things to say...here goes....

Did anyone else notice that the girl that Dan picked up is the same "lady of the night" that Psyco Derek/Ian dressed up as Peyton that ended up in the emergency room? Looks like she got a day job, but still doesn't have a problem jumping in bed with strange men. The look on her face when she figured out he wasn't playing about killing his brother was wonderful.

I am an avid fan and as one I have been a HUGE Naley supporter. I am heartbroken at how far from the old Nathan and Haley from season 4 they are. I thought that they could weather anything together. Haley seems to forget (over and over again) that she too needed to be forgiven at one point. She kissed Chris and left Nathan for months. It took Nathan a while (as it usually does for him to do the right thing) but never did he say he was giving up on them. He looked so hurt when she said she was done trying, like there was nothing he could say. Poor Jamie (who has to be the cutest kid ever) All he wanted was for his mommy and daddy to play with him. I love the Skills relationship with Haley and Jamie. I love that he is sticking to his season for "Pictures of You" promise.

Brooke and Owen are great. I love them together. He brings out so many of her wonderful qualities. I love the twist with Chase being Owens friend and her being "the Brooke" That whole scene was great. I wonder if we'll get a Owen, Brooke, Chase triangle. I liked Peyton and Chase as friends....

Speaking of Peyton, let me say first that I am a huge Leyton fan. Have been since day one (I sat and waited patiently through Brucas, I knew that would pass) and I have been on her side all season. The girl NEVER said no. She said not now. For everyone to jump down her throat for not liking the girl that is with the man she loves is crazy...sorry, I got side tracked, anyway, the look on her face when she saw Lindsay in her dress was heartbreaking. Smiling and telling her she looked beautiful had to be hard.

Rachel is now and will forever be a train wreck. I think she was really going to try this time though, for Brooke, but that damn Victoria. Good bye to her. One thing I am confused on though, is Victoria Brookes business partner or her employee? Cause if they are partners I would think that firing her would be a bit more complicated. Though this is Tree Hill, where you do four years for murder....

Till next week....the wedding....OTH style....I can't wait!!!!
