« So You Think You Can Dance

Episode Recap: Our Top Fourteen Are Revealed

I think the judges are sending the right people home. But before we get to that, I’ll start at the beginning of the show.

At first glance Cat’s dress tonight is even better than the one last night. But the more I look at it the less I enjoy it. The ruffle thing going on at the neckline just isn’t that flattering. I like everything from the waist down and the neck up. I hope her stylists don’t do that to Cat again.

I really like the group dance. Some of you probably pick it out as a Mia Michaels original immediately but I thought it was actually a Wade Robson piece. You know how much he likes all those jerky movements and he is the only one (before tonight) to put a scream in his choreography. But I’m not disappointed Mia choreographed it. It’s strange and weird and cool just like her.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or did we see Nigel wearing leather tonight? I’m not sure we’ve ever seen that before. I guess it was nice to see him out of his suits – he does come off as a bit of a dandy sometimes – but he might have taken it just a bit too far. I’ll give him points for trying and call it an interesting choice.

Let’s get down to the results:

Chelsea & Thayne – dancing for their lives. No surprise here. No one seemed to like their Quick Step last night.
Katee & Joshua – safe. Um, they’d better be.
Chelsie & Mark – safe. Ditto the above.
Kherington & Twitch – safe. You know I love them, so I’m happy.
Courtney & Gev – safe
Comfort & Chris – dancing for their lives. I’m not surprised. I love seeing Comfort dance in her style so I don’t mind having to watch her solo. We’ll see what Chris does this week.
Kourtni & Matt – dancing for their lives. Considering how much I didn’t get their piece last night, I’m not surprised.
Jessica & Will – safe

Our featured performer of the week is “America’s Best Dance Crew” Quest. It features three former contestants of this show, including one of my all-time favorite dancers Hok. I think I’ve mentioned before how much I like that SYTYCD is doing this. I like seeing the different styles and what the professionals in each style bring to the dance floor. That being said, I enjoyed their piece but I didn’t love it. I think sometimes the camera work is too spastic and it’s hard to take it all in.

Solos:
Chelsea – I like her solo tonight. Last week I thought she didn’t bring it but tonight I’m really impressed. We see her great personality and some pretty good technique.

Thayne – He scared me a little bit in the middle when he seemed to lose focus. But overall, I enjoy his solos and I think he did a great job.

Comfort – Great job. I agree with Cat: I was afraid she’d dance her pants off. Despite that, I think we could really see Comfort having fun tonight.

Chris – I like his dancing but there’s nothing that makes him stand out for me tonight. I’m not rooting for him the way I’m rooting for the others who are dancing for their lives.

Kourtni – I love it. Her personality really shines through and you can tell how thoughtful she was when putting choreography to this piece of music. Great job.

Matt – I think we’re seeing some personality for the first time! I think he’s a great technician and I’m actually rooting for him to stay.

And what did the judges think? Oh, yeah. I almost forgot to mention Jordin Sparks. I did watch a bit of her performance. I would have watched it all if she was singing “No Air” with Chris Brown. I’m just saying.

And who was sent home? Chelsea and Chris. I think it was time for them to leave so I’m not too unhappy. Chelsea had the bad luck to start off so hot and then do nothing but cool down in the last few weeks. She didn’t have the technique for the last two week’s dances, so I think it was time for her to go. She was very gracious, of course, and said how privileged she was to have been there. And after what I consider a somewhat bland solo, Chris is sent packing. I was concerned for Matt for just a moment when Nigel kind of psyched us out. But Chris is the one sent home. Chris tells Cat his time on the show has been like a dream come true. Awww. I wish them both the best and look forward to seeing what they’ll do in the future.

What did you think? Did the judges send the right dancers home? As always, thanks for all your great comments so far. Keep ‘em coming.

I actually think Comfort should have gone home. Love her solos, but do not see her bringing anything to the competition in the partner dances. I know their styles are not exactly similar, but look at how Twitch brings it to the different styles, Comfort just does not do that. Plus, the idea of Thayne and Comfort dancing together is just too weird. I expect they will be in the bottom three next week, regardless of which dance they pick. Think they picked the right guy though.
On another note, Jessica is positively saved by being partnered with Will!

I thought Chelsea's solo was better than Confort's. I agreed with the judges on the guys, Chris should have been the one sent packing, however Confort should have been sent packing too. IMO.

I agree that Chris should have been sent home. I am not a Comfort fan so I really think it should have been her instead of Chelsea. Regardless, I can't wait to see how Comfort and Thayne pair up. Should be interesting. I have clear cut favorites for the top 10. We shall see how it pans out.

Kara I totally agree with you. I was happy to see both Chris and Chelsea go home and happy for comfort to stay. Now lets see how she does with Thayne. I was actually hoping Jessica would have gone home and Comfort would get paired with Will but for some reason people liked thier Disco and voted. Hopefuly these 2 will now leanr from one another and make a good team. But my heart still belongs to Josh & Katie and Chelsie and Mark (i love his quirkiness. You have the best job you know!!

Kara, I agreed with everything you said about performance night and last night's eliminations. Thank you for one of the best blogs on the site. It is so funny, I stopped and watched the same two performances twice.

Can't yet decide who is my favorite dancer but right now it is between Twitch and Josh. Twitch tugs at my heart strings and his soul shows through his eyes. Josh smiles with every part of himself and those hips... who knew.

Oh just one minor point of disagreement, I loved Cat's dress. But I have a big girl crush on her so I forgive most anything on that front.

I pretty much called this one. I agree with the judges' pick, but I would have rather Jessica went home with Chris. I will be glad when they began to shake things up by breaking up these couples so all these dancers can dance on their own talents and not ride the pointed toes of their partner.(*cough..Jessica...cough*) Katee may be another one that doesn't have staying power without her partner.
I'm glad Comfort stayed in the game. We really have enough contemporary dancers in this competition and she has done respectable with other styles.
So, hang in there Comfort so we can have a little versatility among the ladies in the show--I'll bet the judges are thinking the same thing.
Since she never jelled with Chris, maybe Thayne and Comfort can create magic. Will see. I'm rooting for all the entertainment I can get.

Kara--You might want to change the label you gave Qwest from "America's Best Dance Crew" to something else....the Jabbawockeez hold that title! Just dont want people to berate you all day :)

There is so much talent there. Every elimination is going to be tough.
I actually thought Chris did well in the African number. I thought he was in character throughout. But his solo dance had nothing new, so I figured he would be going bye bye.
I was surprised Chelsea was the one to go. She has such sparkle and personality, which the judges keep harping on to some of the others. And they are all good. As Adam said, it has a lot to do with what dances they draw.
My fav 3 couples were safe, so I'm good with the results.

"America's Best Dance Crew" is what Cat called Qwest.

Chris was the right boy to go home, but wish Jessica would have been the girl.

Great recap Kara! On the comment about "America's Best Dance Crew"... that's what Kat Deely said, Kara was just quoting her, hence the quotation marks surrounding "America's Best Dance Crew". It's pretty cool that D-Trix is now part of Qwest but I sense a battle coming in the future with these guys vs. the JabbaWockeez... I just hope the T.V. producers are smart enough to pick up on this idea and televise it.

On to the show... yep. They fulfilled my wishes of kicking off Chris...not that I didn't like him, but he was a bit too soft for the dances where they demanded him to lead or be more masculine. They did fulfill my expectations of kicking off Chelsea because let's face it...Comfort performed better week after week than Chelsea did. Plus, Chelsea's solo wasn't so great; she twirled for the most part and didn't dance.

It will be interesting pairing Thayne with Comfort but IMO, I don't think Thayne is much stronger than Chris and I see Comfort outperforming him also.

I was also disappointed that Khortni & Matt were in the bottom 3, but glad that they turned it up in their solos.

I don't know why FOX is calling out MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" because the shows feel completely different and almost incomparable. FOX has a show that highlights couples and solos with many different styles of dance, respectable judges and keeps a genuine, classy feel throughout the season. MTV has a show that showcases crews through hip-hop routines, questionable judges, and keeps a raw, yet fabricated feel throughout the season. It's like comparing grapefruits with tangerines.

I agree. Now let me talk about something that has been bugging me the last few weeks. Thayne's body! I find it hard to watch him because his legs are so short in proportion to his torso. Ok, it's nothing major, but it just looks so odd to me, LOL.

Oh, I can't believe that Cat is only 5'9"! She towers over almost all of the dancers, so I thought she was at least 6' tall without heels. Are the dancers really that short? It was nice to see Jordin Sparks next to Cat. I remember her towering over little Ryan Seacrest on American Idol.

The camera work was awful on Qwest's performance. I never did see which one was Ryan. I'm glad to see they have a female in their crew, (I think).

Yea, I correctly predicted all 3 couples in the bottom 3! Two dancers down, four to go.

I was actually hoping Jessica would have gone home and Comfort would get paired with Will but for some reason people liked thier Disco and voted.

That would be me. What can I say...I'm a sucker for a pretty redhead with a great figure.

Cat - - please stop wearing the curtains.

Was Jordin Sparks lip-synching? Sure seemed like it. Maybe they all do, but that one just looked weird to me.

Cat and Jordin on the same stage - - there are giants among us.
