« So You Think You Can Dance

Episode 21 Recap: The Hardest Cut of All

It was results night and we all had to sit and wait five days to find out our final four. I tuned in a bit late and caught the opening number already in progress; it looked to me like zombies in the jungle. I just knew it was choreographed by Wade. The poor audience getting the fake fog blown into them; that fog is so not nice to be on the receiving end of. It is also not the best thing for the lungs when you are trying to dance.

There was also an update on Cedric, who has been hanging with Debbie and has gotten a full ride to the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. It's great to hear that Debbie kept her word and was not just blowing smoke.

We were treated to solos by the top six dancers before the results were announced. I liked Sabra's number; she picked a song from Fosse. I was actually surprised by Lacey’s solo; I expected her to do another pole dance or striptease, but she actually danced. I was pretty indifferent about Lauren’s routine.

Cat’s comments about Lacey forgetting part of her solo last week and again this week had me wondering if the dancers choreograph their own routines or if they actually work with a choreographer. What do you think?

Pasha’s routine was full of energy, and just seemed to draw the audience in — he's a bit of a showman, like Neil. I am happy to see that Neil danced a little more and relied less on his gymnastics background to get through the solo. I still don’t get Danny and how his mind relates to the music he is choosing.

So the show was actually taped last Thursday, and I was expecting that. I did try to find some spoilers, but I couldn't find any. OK, I'll admit I didn't try too hard. I give Fox and the producers an A for effort for clearing the studio audience out before revealing the two dancers that would be leaving.

So the final four are Lacey, Sabra, Danny, and Neil; unfortunately we lost Pasha and Lauren. I expected Lacey and Sabra to make it to the final. While I don’t like Danny and I think early on he wasn't trying to get the audience on his side, I always expected him to make it to the final as well. But I am surprised that Neil was chosen over Pasha, since I think Pasha is the more well-rounded dancer. Yes, Neil has grown significantly, but he still relies on his tricks to get through his solos.

During the final credits, when everyone was back on stage, Danny and Lauren seemed to be hugging for a long time. What is going on between the two of them? Meanwhile, Neil was just sort of standing there, detached from everyone and everything around him.

Catch you guys on Wednesday.

Is it just me, but did Debbie Allen TWICE quote from Fame-- when the people were eliminated. "They'll remember your name..." - I think she's great, but couldn't she come up with something a bit more original.
Oh, BTW- I really like Sabra, expected her to make the final four.

Well Lacey is there because of all of the Benji voters so that did not surprise anyone here.

Sabra is the winner or at least she should be. Both she and Danny are the best of the top 4. I did not expect to see Pasha because of how well Neil has done the last two or three weeks.

If Sabra does not win there is a trick to it because she is the greatest and a real joy to watch.

Hmmm...I think it was Pasha and Lacey they were hugging for awhile??

This was SOOOOOO hard. I actually cried tonight because I lost my Pasha. I knew it was coming, but I was still hoping for a miracle, even though I knew the little fangirls would be out in full force voting for Neil (and I can't fault them, because I voted for him too). But Pasha is so amazing I know we'll see him again...perhaps he'll choreograph a routine or two next year?

I'm so thrilled about Sabra making it. She's such a joy to watch. There's a great talent coming from that lttle girl.

I've been watching the SYTYCD marathon over at Fox Reality this evening. What a fantastic season it's been! Full of great routines and really well cast. I will miss the show when the season is over.

Thanks , Marc, for getting the updated blog out so quickly

I'm still sad :( Danny and Lauren did hug for a long ass time and poor little Neil was just standing there waiting to get his turn.

yeah, Danny and Lauren hugged for a very long time, and I felt really bad for Neil, considering he was Lauren's dance partner until the top 10, but I'm thinking there is definitely something going on between Danny and Lauren.

That said, I am soooooo glad Neil got through! He and Sabra are my two favorites, and if either one of them wins I'll be ecstatic. My sister and I started screaming when they said that Neil got through. Danny has started to grow on me ever since Anya was eliminated. His personality really has begun to grow and I'm really glad, because he's an incredible dancer, and at the beginning his attitude made me hate his dancing.

Lacey is the only one I thought did not deserve to be in the final. I think Lauren is a better dancer, and I loved her a lot more, but 3 out of 4 is not bad.

Yes, it was Danny and Lauren, and they hugged for a very long time, with what looked like a couple of smooches thrown in.

It was great that Fox kicked the audience out. Admittedly, I'd been flipping around between other stations during that very long Kitchen Nightmares preview, and was kind of thrown off to see everyone leaving when I came back to the show, but I did figure it out.

The guest acts were interesting, even though none of them were mentioned in the review. I enjoyed the krumping, and wish the African dancer had gone longer. I far prefer guest dancers to bad singers.

Mark, I'm glad that you kept the blog going, but it seems that you let the negative comments scare you. Where's the personality in the reporting? Bring back some of yourself.

I made a diligent effort to find spoilers. The most credible one I found had Lacey and Danny being eliminated. Kudos to Fox and the producers for keeping the results under wraps.

I am sad Pasha is gone. I didn't want to see any of the Final 3 men eliminated. I think Neil is peaking at just the right time, although Danny is still my overall fave.

As for the women, I am perfectly fine with Lauren leaving, although I did like her solo last night. I would have been fine with Lacey leaving also, although I knew that wouldn't happen. Sabra deserves to be in the final, and I would be OK with her winning it all.

I truly appreciate the show's efforts to showcase different types of music and dance this year. I was so thrilled that Lil C was performing, I thought I would finally get a clue what krumping was all about. Sadly, no. Is it popping? Is it hip hop with a lot of jerking? Still don't know.

The African dancer was interesting.
My husband noted that it must be harder to dance to only drums, no music, and that it was ritualistic.

I wasn't keen on the opening number. Too much smoke and weeds and black make-up. I didn't even think about the dancers' lungs, but you're right, Marc, they probably all collapsed coughing as soon as they got off camera.

It was pretty weird showing the results in an empty theatre, with only the judges and maybe the cameramen clapping. My take on the extended hugging is that they are all pretty close and take the eliminations hard. Danny seemed very emotional before the closing credits. I would be surprised if he and Lauren were a couple, but I guess if they are we'll find out.

I saw an article in one of those semi-tabloid magazines that said the reason Mary was crying after Mia's daddy-daughter number was that Mary's own dad was recently diagnosed with inoperable cancer, and that Mary actually had to leave the set for 20 minutes to compose herself.

Finally, is it just me, or did that whole "SYTYCD Reaches Out" segment seem like "Idol Gives Back Lite"? I am not buying that any kid is gonna be saved from a life of crime and deprivation just cause his after-school teacher had 5 minutes of hip hop with Shane Sparks. Sorry. Not buying it.

I think maybe the reason Lauren and Danny were hugging so much is because they were partners last week. Perhaps each week the dancers are most attached to their most recent partner.

Anyone know if I can find the opening number from last night online? I was so bummed I tuned in late and missed a Wade routine! Thanks.

P.S. I'm happy with the final 4! Can't wait for the performance show tomorrow, it should be a good one!

The people who say that Lacey is there because of the Benji voters are just plain rude. It would be like saying the Travis voters kept Danny in the competition. It is just not true.

Lacey is a very talented dancer. I tried not to like her but couldn't help it. She is probably one of the most versatile dancers on the show, along with Sabra. Her solos were her only weakness in my opinion, though she killed last night's routine.

I was honestly shocked about Pasha going...even a little teary eyed. I was sure that Danny would go. He is an amazing dancer but never seemed to connect with the audience. After that, I thought it would be Neil, but I would have been just as heartbroken with him as with Pasha.

Well, in the first place, the L.A. workshop was for dance teachers who conduct afterschool programs, not for students themselves. And as someone who actually runs a non-profit after-school arts program for inner-city kids, I can assure you that dance - or visual arts or music or drama - CAN change a kid's life, and, yes, even keep them off the street.

I hope the producers will be able to continue these important outreach workshops. I also hope that if they come to Atlanta, Birmingham, or Nashville that they'll allow those of us who run programs in nearby cities to participate!

I was definitely not pleased that I had the wait until Monday for the results show but the outcome was well worth the wait. Finally Lauren's 9 lives has run out, although she did start to show signs of being a real dancer towards the end, it would have really been unfair if she made it to the final of Lacey and Sabra who have been bringing it every week. Pascha is a good dancer but I knew he would not been able to overcome the crazy choregraphy neil and sabra had last week. I personally believe that it was the paso doble drop that saved neil and his nice abs! Danny is a great dancer and I see he is now trying to make himself seem more human but I find his efforts to be a little contrived. As a for Danny and Lauren hugging for a long time I don't think it was about anything because he is clearly gay (which is a shame cos he is so damn cute)

The one thing that has always bugged me about SYTYCD, and Idol, and Big Brother, and other shows where the audience votes, is that we do not know the individual vote count.

Yeah we were told that 10.5 million votes were cast, but how does that break down to each individual dancer.

How do we know that the producers are still not manipulating the results to suit a better show?
