« So You Think You Can Dance

Episode 18 Recap: "Remembrance"

There are two weeks to go until the final episode. All I can say is: Already? That means summer is coming to an end.

Tonight’s judges are Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe, and each dancer will dance two different routines in two different styles with the same partner.

Danny and Sara
First Routine: Argentine Tango choreographed by Alex DeSilva to "Whatever Lola Wants" by Sarah Vaughan & Gotan Project.

I just loved this number and I am starting to see some more personality in Danny — he actually connected. I am just wondering if Sara out-danced him. What do you guys think?

Second Routine: Hip Hop choreographed by Shane Sparks to "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa.
Loved the song — brought back some fun memories. This is the first time I’ve seen Danny looking like he was having fun.

Dominic and Lauren
First Routine: Krump choreographed by Lil C to "I Get Money" by 50 Cent.

I just didn’t feel anything from this number. I also did not get the feeling that they were dancing as partners. It mostly felt like two individual dancers.

Second Routine: Rumba choreographed by Tony Meredith to "Ain’t No Sunshine" by Bill Withers.

I never thought of this song as a rumba. It was an interesting interpretation. Did you catch the kiss at the end of the routine? Was that planned or spur of the moment? Given Lauren’s reaction, I think it was definitely not planned.

I actually thought this routine was much better than their first routine.

Neil and Lacey
First Routine: Latin Jazz choreographed by Maria Torres to "Acid" by Ray Baretto.

This was an interesting number; it kept my attention.

Second Routine: Contemporary choreographed by Mia Michaels to "Time" by Billy Porter.

About all I can say is WOW and thank you, Mia, for sharing something so personal. I actually thought this was Mia’s best number ever. Even better than last year's Emmy-nominated Bench routine with Heidi and Travis.

I am just trying to understand: Was this a dream or a memory of Mia and her father in the park?

Did you catch that Mary was not only speechless but was crying?

Pasha and Sabra
First Routine: Broadway choreographed by Tyce Diorio to "A Wild Wild Party" by the Off Broadway cast of The Wild Party.

I am not sure this routine actually worked. It felt kind of flat to me. I do agree with Nigel that it probably needs the chorus dancers to make it work. But I will give Pasha and Sabra an A for effort.

Second Routine: Quick Step to "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

It was fun to watch and a great change of emotion from Lacey and Neil’s Contemporary routine. This routine with the outfits reminded me of the movie Swing Kids.

My favorite routines tonight in order were Lacey and Neil’s Contemporary, Sabra and Pasha’s quick step, and finally Lacey and Neil’s Latin jazz.

My least favorite routines were Dominic and Lauren’s Krump and Danny and Sara’s hip-hop.

Who will be in the bottom two male and female dancers? I really don’t know.

Some random thoughts/questions:

Did Danny slip during the opening number?

Nigel was a riot tonight: 50 cent = 25 pence, Danny and Sara’s outfits look like they belong on Sesame Street, Lil C knowing as much about cucumber sandwiches and tea as Nigel knows about Krumping.

Let our new Online Video Guide pair you up with some Dance clips.

I caught Mary crying. And that was the firat time I was shocked that she didn't say anything. As for Danny and Sara, they did bad on their second number (I didn't see the first one). Neil and Lacey, ah, I don't even want to go there. I just cooled off. The second routine was nothing but amazing. I thought Dominic and Lauren did good on the first routine, but I didn't like the song. The second one gave me chills. Pasha and Sabra, um, eh.

I'm sure I'll be skewered for this but I didn't think the actual dancing/choreography during Lacey and Neil's Mia routine was amazing. If you take away the story it was kind of blah. Of course, with the story (and I'm sure someone will argue that "dancing is a story"), it's more touching.

But I don't think "touching" is the same as "amazing." I liked that it caused so many emotions in people but, as Nigel might say, this IS a dance contest not an emotional contest.

I don't know that the dance was a dream or a memory. I thought she said it was something like a second chance at being with her father again. Unless you mean "dream" as in it's her dream to dance one more time with her father.

No one really blew me away tonight. Lots of good dancing but the songs didn't do much for me nor did the choreography (and I find the two go hand-in-hand for me). Just surprised since it's so close to the finale.

A Swing Kids reference?!? Awesome!

I really liked Pasha and Sabra tonight, though I'm not sure why. And I really disliked the Push It dance... I just didn't think it worked.

I'm really wondering about what's going on with Mary. I think something else was going on, other than just the dance because she was still emotional even during the next dance. And Nigel referred to something going on with her.

I love Pasha. Don't really know why but I just love watching him dance.

Sabra is growing on me. I didn't care much for her at first, but she is definitely growing on me. She may be my 2nd favorite female dancer.

Lacey is my favorite female dancer and tonight's Mia Michael's number clinched it. Normally, she is sex personified in her dancing. During this number, she was innocent and joyous. She can dance anything. Amazing.

Neil is surprising me as well lately.

Dominic was my favorite last week but I think we'll see him going home this week. He just didn't do as well as the others, unfortunately.

I think Lauren will be going home as well. I enjoy her dancing but I don't think she's as popular as the others. If it isn't her, it will be Sara.

As for Mary, Nigel said she's going through something herself right now. My guess is that she has a family member who is ill. When my father was dying, I went to the funeral for my husband's aunt and bawled my eyes out. Yes, she was a wonderful woman and I loved her, but I couldn't stop from knowing that the next funeral I'd be attending would be my father's. I think something like that may be going on with Mary. My heart goes out to her.

I really enjoy Adam as a judge. He seems to have a great personality, he's funny and his comments to the dancers are constructive.

Danny and Pasha- I just love watching Danny dance. He is perhaps the most beautiful dancer I've ever seen and his smile melts my heart. Sarah has grown on me too. I loved Tango and thought the Hip Hop was cute, which I suppose is a terrible adjective to use for Hip Hop.

Dominic and Lauren - They are the only couple I can see going home this week. The great cover she pulled off when she fell was my favorite part of the Krump dance and the costumes were my favorite part of the Rumba. I'm not sure what that emotion was from Lauren after the kiss, but the kiss itself actually simmered a bit.

Lacey and Neil - Lacey is one of my least favorite girls and Neil is one of my favorite boys. Their first number was a bit lacking, Lacey finally abandoned the sex kitten persona just when she needed it. That may have been due to the storyline of their second dance, I would think that would hinder the romance acting. My phone rang during the contemporary routine so I missed the emotional impact it must have had, though what I saw with it muted looked like a lot of skipping and hopping to me. I hope I can find it posted online somewhere.

Pasha and Sabra – He’s my favorite guy and she’s my favorite girl, so I loved seeing them dance together. I thought their energy in both dances was contagious. They definitely had the most physically demanding routines of the night.

My understanding of the Mia routine was her imagining of she and her Father reuniting in heaven. Not a memory. It was was lovely and Neil and Lacey were amazing with it.

Other than that, none of the other routines really grabbed me tonight. Some were more well done than others, but none connected with me on a personal level. I didn't get to see the Latin jazz w/ Neil and Lacey because Fox cut in with coverage of the bridge collapse in Minnesota.

Really enjoyed the quick step with Pasha and Sabra.

Lauren has really stepped it up for me. I loved her Rhumba.

I love Adam Shankman. Can he just stay, please?

Didn't care for Shane's hip hop routine at all. I found it boring. How can you make "Push It" boring?

My honest thoughts based on tonight are that it should be both B-kids, Dominic and Sara, who should go. I like them both a lot, and I think they both have come a long way and have done really well in the various styles, but ultimately, I think the other 6 are just on another level dance wise.

How can it be there are only 2 weeks left?

mk here we go

Danny/ Sara:

this was an awesome pairing...i have been a Danny supporter since day 1 and Sara is becoming more and more impressive every week...their first dance (tango) was fantastic...and their second (hip hop) was uneven (Danny was too smooth i think he was worried about his hat falling off cuz once it did he was way better)

Dominic/ Lauren:

Krump was weak and weird...i kinda get the feeling krump is more of a freestyle type of dance not so much a 'routine' style....second was HOT HOT HOT...omg...from the first time she was on i thought lauren was the hottest girl on the show but man...hot...and i love dominic he is so impressive for having no training

Neil/ Lacey:

i dont like Neil...he reminds me of a cheerleader...i'm impressed by his athleticism but idk i dont like him...their first dance was dull and lack luster...no heat for a LATIN dance and Lacey seemed afraid for the lift the whole time....the Mia Micheals routine was great...she really saves her best stuff for this point in the competition....the flower tossing stuff at the begining was super impressive that they didnt mess that up...but i liked it alot....they are lucky they did that one second to wipe away the memory of the first dance

PS how inappropriate was Lacey when she was goofing during the phone number thing right after the Mia routine...i didnt think that was very respectful to what she just portrayed

Pasha/ Sabra:

Sabra is adorable...Pasha is good....first dance...Sabra amazing and Pasha seemed to be pressing a little bit to keep the character (i am rarely a fan of Tyce routines)....second dance was unbelievable...Pasha dominated and it was really his time to shine w/ the quickstep and he really helped make Sabra look good in a very difficult style

i'd have to say Dominic is probs going home w/ Danny being second lowest even tho i think Neil had the worst guy performance w/ that latin jazz dance

and Lauren or Sara are going home...i'd say Sara if i had to make a choice...i think Lacey is gonna take a spot in the final 4 that she shouldnt get

First off, I want to say thank you, Marc, for keeping up with the blog. I know I am just one of many who really appreciates this.
As far as the dances tonight, Mia's was ok, but if I didn't know the backstory, I'm not so sure I'd be feelin it.
My personal favs are Sabra and Danny. Can't wait til tomorrow night!

I guess I'm one of the few who wasn't impressed with the contemp. routine. If I didn't hear Mia explain the "story", I would've thought it was terrible. Was there ANY dancing whatsoever? I do appreciate what Mia was trying to do, though. So props for that, but not to the actual dance. I didn't like Danny/Sara's hip hop number either.

I liked Pasha/Sabra's quickstep and Dom/Lauren's rumba the most.

Oh, and Dom better watch out for Lauren's boyfriend! LOL

Danny and Sarah's Argentine Tango: Loved loved loved it. I was not a Sarah fan to begin with but she's been growing on me the last few weeks and I'm impressed with her versatility. And Danny...well, what can I say, I love his dancing! That twisty pretzel thing was hot!

Dominic and Lauren's Krump: I actually enjoyed this routine and the choreography. They were not always in sync and I enjoyed Dominic more than Lauren. I also caught that Lauren fell but she did a pretty good job of covering it up, which in dancing is almost as important as getting it right.

Neil and Lacey's Latin Jazz: This routing did nothing for me and I agree with the "jidges"...they had zero chemistry in this number.

Pasha and Sabra's Broadway: I thought this was a fun number and executed nicely. I'm definitely a Pasha and Sabra fan!

Danny and Sarah's Hip Hop: Meh...this could be bad news for my boy, although most of what under whelmed me were things beyond the dancers control. Didn't like Shane's choreography and the costumes were heinous. I much prefer Danny in ballroom and contemporary dances and Sarah really should have "brought it" being that this was her specialty.

Dominic and Lauren's Rumba: Nope...didn't feel it at all... again, not really the dancers fault but this dance had very little rumba and too many poses. You could sense that the difficulty level was brought down a notch, which I feel will ultimately hurt both of them and they will (should) be in the bottom this week.

Neil and Lacey's Contemporary: I have to agree with Cruciatus. This was a beautiful performance and very touching knowing the backstory, however there was very little actual dancing. Leap here, flower toss there, etc. It was more acting and I had to watch it twice to really appreciate it for what it was. That being said, for the first time, Neil touched me and I didn't get the cheerleader vibe from him. And yes, I did feel it was very inappropriate, yet typical Lacey, to go from somber and teary eyed to hamming it up for the camera when it was time to give her dial in number. And then within a blink of an eye, she snapped out of it and went back to sad and somber.

Pasha and Sabra's Quick Step: I really enjoyed it and they performed it well. Sabra continues to amaze me. I can't believe she's only been dancing for 4 years!

Who's going home this week? It's really hard to say. My guess would be Neil or Dominic and Lauren or Sarah.

Did anyone notice...during the toss to the commercial break before Mia's contemporary number...Neil has his arm around Lacey and kept on looking at her trying to have a partner relationship with her while she ignored him and waved to the camera the whole time! She is so much like her brother--mugging for the camera without much interaction with her partner. Sigh...makes me dislike her even more.

When I see Sabra dancing I feel as though "TINKER BELL" has come to life.
She is not only beautiful, but talented as well.. Is stated tonight she is like watching a butterfly!!

GOD Bless her..

Danny and Sara
1st: I really enjoyed this number. I think Sarah is becoming my favorite girl dancer on the show right now. I think she dances better to the other genres that she does to her own b-girl style.
Danny is definitely growing on me. I think of the four guys left he is rapidly moving to my 2nd fav.

And Marc, I agree with you. I think Sarah out danced Danny in both numbers. Which brings me to...

2nd: Although Danny did look like he was having fun, he was much weaker than Sarah was in this number. Towards the end where they did the sort of push up with the arm swinging under - he barely made it off the floor. I actually thought this routine was kind of boring. Loved the song though! hehe

Dominic and Lauren
1st: I didn't like it. I got up and left the room to do something else. This one just didn't hold my attention.

2nd: I missed the kiss. Will have to go back and watch - hold on! Wow! What a kiss. I too wonder if that was a planned kiss or spur of the moment. Lauren didn't seem to object to it though. Maybe they intended on a little smooch but not anything that steamy! haha
The dance was nice. I do agree with the judges though. I would have liked to have seen more Latin movement in it like with the hips rotating while walking and such. And it was a lot more posing than there was actual dancing.

Neil and Lacey
1st: This number is escaping my memory....
Oh, the shirtless Neil one. Hmm. I guess it was okay. Obviously not great if I couldn't remember it. haha.

2nd: Ah, Mia Michaels. I love her heart felt pouring out of her emotions. I usually really love her work. However, I'm curious if this routine would have the same WOW factor if the story behind it wasn't so moving and personal? This is what Mia envisioned what it would be like to reunite with her father in Heaven. A beautiful story, wonderful dancing. I'm still curious though if people saw this dance without knowing the reasoning behind it if it would have gotten the same reaction out of everyone?

Mary was crying at the end because, as Nigel said, she is going through something personal right now and this routine brought that emotion out.

Pasha and Sabra
1st: I love Pasha. I loved this routine. I love Sabra. Nuff' Said!

2nd: Ah, the kiss of death dance. I thought they hit it out of the park with this one. Definitely the best routine of the night for me.

Also Marc, nice shout our for Swing Kids! I LOVE that movie.

So, my wishes for the Final 4 - hmmm! Well, Pasha (I want him to win). Sabra. And, I think I'm going to have to go with Danny and Sarah.

Who I think will go tomorrow? Dominic and Lauren.

Can't wait for tomorrow night! :)

Sorry for such a long post too everyone. :)

And Thank You Marc for deciding to continue on with the blog!

Hmm, I'm also one of the few who didn't fall in love with Mia's contemporary routine. I had pretty high expectations for it, and I didn't think any of them (Mia, Neil, Lacey) met them.

Other than the Las Vegas routine, I don't think I've liked any of Shane's dances this season, and that routine didn't help Danny and Sarah at all. And the wardrobe people, what were they thinking? They've done wrong before, but with so few dancers, they should always dress them to their best advantage.

I like Pasha and Sabra, but I didn't love either of their routines. They danced their stuff well, but I'm just not a fan of either styles on the show. I like Broadway and I enjoy the quick step on Dancing with the Stars, but I'm not a fan of either on SYTYCD.

I think Dominic will leave tomorrow and probably Lauren. I think Sarah may have garnered more fanatical, phone-calling fans (i.e. tween girls) in the past weeks than Lauren.
