Episode 6 Recap: " Heal"

The tale of Katie and Dave kicks off the episode with them visiting Dr. May, and immediately I'm hooked. Ally Walker and Tim DeKay deliver their lines so naturally and with such spontaneity it's hard to imagine it's scripted. Dave is still resistant to therapy, first wanting to leave the session early, then defensively turning Katie's words around to put the blame on her. Dr. May recommends forgetting about sex to remove any burden and expectations. Later, we learn that May and Arthur were in therapy, but whatever advice they got isn't appropriate, at least yet, for the "fragile" Katie and Dave.

Though few and far between, I love the much-needed injection of humor when Rita and Katie dish at the diner. Sherry Stringfield always gets Ally Walker to burst into hearty laughter and I can't help but crack up at her reactions. Rita knows her husband views porn on their computer, leading curious Katie to check out Dave's Internet history. (He reads Consumer Reports and ESPN.) She explores a porn site and eventually leaves the Web address undeleted. It's only a matter of time before Dave discovers it.

Jamie said she was "tangled up in sex" when she was with Hugo, so let's see if I can untangle this scenario. Jamie used Nick for sex, not out of love, but because she wanted him to need her more than Anya. Nick wanted to get back at Jamie for thinking of Hugo, so he comes over for sex. But I'm guessing that Nick didn't mean it since he invites Jamie to meet the family at a party for the adorable Aunt Rose. Jamie tells Dr. May she feels "useless" when alone, so perhaps both Jamie and Nick have abandonment issues.

And speaking of abandonment, Carolyn and Palek divorce themselves from Dr. May. They should consider staying in therapy to work on their relationship or it's most likely going to drift away. Rushing back to the office, Carolyn wants to get back on the fast track of becoming a partner, and to tell the lunch-cart lady to spread the word that she's not pregnant.

Screaming kids is what it takes for Palek to choose his words carefully and finally confess to Carolyn that he doesn't want to pursue having children. And to distance himself from the whole infertility issue, he announces he's putting the house on the market. At the open house, Jamie shows up with Mason who confides that she fantasizes sexually about brother-in-law Palek. (Uh-oh!) Seemingly drawn to the bedroom, Jamie meets Carolyn, whose favorite author is French Romantic-era writer Victor Hugo. Coincidence?

Random thoughts:
• Jamie's tattoo means "heal."
• Did all of the L.A. Law fans notice Susan Ruttan as Nick's mother?
• After an intense sex scene with Arthur, did May sneak in a visit with John (Ronny Cox) or was this one authorized?
• I wish Katie wouldn't regularly back down and apologize to Dave, who ultimately says they've become "one of those couples" and uses the lame line "you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube."
• What's up with Dave suddenly and inappropriately asking Katie in front of the kids if she wants to have sex?
• Did Palek lose interest in having children because they couldn't have them or do you think he never wanted them? And if that's the case, isn't that something to discuss before marriage?
• Dr. May says: "Sex shouldn't be the measure of whether a marriage is succeeding. In other cultures it isn't." Why is it in this culture?

I can't believe no one else has commented on this show. What is up? I really like the storylines and the frighteningly honest portrayal of relationships but I must admit it is hard to watch sometimes. It is so real and the sex scenes are pretty raw I think. I think it very interesting how Kate and Dave are able to be honest with eachother but are still holding so much back. They are really restrained and inhibited. I am inclined to think that the suggestion that their therapist had recommended to her was to explore other people, which is how she and her other lover ended up trying eachother out for size. And Katie and Dave are definitely not those type of people. To correct you though, Katie did delete the browser addresses right before she was getting off the computer. And what did Dave go outside for in the middle of the night? was it to pleasure himself? Very strange and it makes me wonder how often men actually are doing that behind their wives backs? Wouldn't doing that diminish his desire to do the real thing? I wish I could have some real answers there, ya know.

I think Carolyn is going to pull away from Palak and Palak is going to find his satisfaction from other women. I am just surprised to see Carolyn give up so easily on trying to get pregnant in the first place, but now she really can't even change her mind since she doesn't have a husband who wants children anymore. Sad.

Can't wait till next week!

Hey tamomo, perhaps you're right about Katie deleting the addresses. I noticed they were highlighted but didn't see them go away.

And your guess that May and Arthur's therapist recommended they explore other people is interesting and something that I couldn't see working for Dave and Katie at all.

I watched the scene where Dave goes outside twice and wondered why we were shown that but didn't notice anything specific about it. We've seen them on that patio numerous times and maybe it just suggests nothing more than getting some air and escaping the confines of the house.

I like this show a lot also, and the intricate details of each character's personality is unlike what is offered on network TV. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on next week's episode!

One of my favorite shows on tv right now. Hope it gets renewed. I watched next week's episode 'On Demand' and it is great. So true to real life. Can't wait for each new episode. Thanks for the recaps. Many of the underwatched shows dont have them, i.e. Brotherhood.

Sorry late post:

I definitly think Palek was never truly desired having a baby. Whether he "pretended" just to please his wife or he just couldn't bring himself to tell her, is something I've always wondered.

Great episode as usual.

It looked to me like the addresses were deleted after they were highlighted.

Ever since the first episode between May and Arthur when he mentions another guy I was thinking that May had an affair, but last nite I wondered if they were encouraged to become swingers or something like that.

And there's NO way that Katie and Dave are ready for that. As it is I'm not sure how they've survived this long. But they very obviously love each other. I marvelled at the ease at which he jokingly asked if she wanted to have sex just because his daughter was listening to her Ipod. But I do like that at least they do discuss it now. The first few episodes that would've been COMPLETELY impossible. I wish she would stop apologizing too. She seems poised to stand up for herself as a rule at this point so I'm glad of that.

I don't think that Palek ever really wanted kids but probably didn't have much of an opinion one way or another before they got married. He just went along with whatever she wanted. But considering the ordeal and all the ups and downs and the emotional impact it's had on their lives and relationship, I can see why he would now have a definitive opinion on the matter.

I think that Carolyn is just all around an unhappy person. She just doesn't seem like she's satisfied with herself and maybe a baby was going to fill some kind of void. Consequently I don't think their marriage will last and I agree they should not have left therapy. But then given how much they lied while they were there maybe it doesn't make that much of a difference.

I was surprised to hear Mason describing her fantasies of Palek but I get it. He's kinda hot. Was I the only one who got a vibe of a sexual nature when Jamie and Palek met? It was a big uh oh moment for me although not one I can put my finger on.

Both Jamie and Nick are screwed up but if they just keep it at a friends with benefits kind of vibe the fallout probably wouldn't be that bad. I don't think Jamie can do FWB though. She's all about a relationship so she can be validated. I think she just didn't get enough quality daddy time.

I love seeing Rita and you're right it's not nearly enough!

I think that May's visit with John was the one heavily encouraged by Arthur for the last couple of shows. My question is does Arthur want them to sleep together?

Also, I'm surprised I haven't heard much about the explicit sex scenes concerning May and Arthur. It's not the Golden Girls we're used to seeing is it? :)

Still, I think it shows alot of growth for us as a society to not only be aware that seniors are still active sexually but to have the opportunity to see it too.

Can't wait until next week!

It's a Sanskrit word I believe. There's an explanation here:
