Episode Recap: The Sounds of Jungle Love

“With all due respect, I think you’re giving yourself too much credit.” I love it when Jeff gets feisty. He’s been so since episode one where he easily and repeatedly cut the dearly departed Johnny Fairplay down to size. Tonight this gentle barb was meant purely for Chet who – well, I’ll just say it – he choked during the immunity challenge and then tried to pass it off as if he were merely giving another tribe member a chance to play.

Chet better watch it. He, along with Kathy and Tracy, are already flailing about in quicksand in the eyes of the other, younger fans. I don’t recall ever seeing a tribe separate under two shelters as this one has. If Chet is any evidence, this sub-tribe of three is going to need to kick their game up a notch or the remaining seven tribe mates are going to eat them alive. Surprised as I am to say this, I would miss Kathy. It could just be that she won me over with her impersonation of Joel, but she seems like a rather funny and genuinely nice person.

See how first impressions can be wrong? Last week I found myself liking Mikey B. This week, not so much. I appreciate that he’s p-l-a-y-i-n-g the game, but he is overdoing it. I’ve replaced Mikey in my affections with Joel. How thrilled were you to see someone recognize the threat in Mikey and neutralize it? This is how the game is played! I will no longer be deceived by Joel’s passing resemblance to the mainplayers in the ABC series Cavemen. This man pulled a Cirie and single-handedly finessed the blindsided ouster of Mikey’s gal pal, Mary. Joel just may be the man to beat.

Over at the favorites camp Cirie is finally in the house and she has hooked up with Penner. Fabulous! These two ought to be entertaining to watch. I desperately hope that they make a final-two super-secret pact. Already they’re tossing out one-liners about the canoodling Amanda/Ozzy pairing as well as preparing to demolish the romantic foursome should James and Parvati prove to have a solid alliance with Amanda and Ozzy. (Ozmanda?)

This week, the favorites earned their designation by actually winning the immunity challenge. They sent Kathy to Exile Island, but the new twist had them sending Cirie alongside. This means that both tribes have the chance at the Hidden Immunity Idol. Cirie and Katy bonded as they trekked over the ocean and back again in search of… The thing is, due to a deliberate edit, we viewers have no idea if she and Kathy ever found the little sucker. This, of course, makes me thing that they did. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

To sum up: I like Joel. I like Kathy. I don’t like Mikey as much any more. Tribe Airai has splintered along age lines and there are hints of a power struggle in the making. Chet is seemingly growing a porn-stache. Erik’s shorts are short. Joel speaks of loyalty and deception. Ozzy has fallen hard for Amanda. Cirie doesn’t like it. Jonathan has secured Cirie as the fifth member of his alliance and James and Parvati are in la-la land. The tribes are tied with one win each. At this stage it could be anybody’s game, thus making it the perfect time to speculate. I put the question to you dear readers: Who will be the ultimate survivor, a fan or a favorite?

About the idol--if the ladies did find it does only one of them get it? I may have missed if they explained it but I don't remember hearing anything about that. If so, I wonder how they decided. Finders Keepers?

Though they started in the right direction thanks to Kathy...

Also, I don't know everyone's names yet but mentioning Cavemen made me know you meant Joel! I personally kept flashing to Kevin Nealon as Tarzan. Sorry, Joel. Can't control my own thoughts.

I don't quite know who I'm liking yet. I suppose I have to wait and see how they align. I have always like Cirie so I'll definitely be watching what she does.

Many of the alleged "favorites" I don't even remember so I guess I have to get to know them again. So it's a good thing this season looks like it has the potential to be interesting enough to watch!

I like the way Joel blindsided Mikey and Mary. The look on Mikey's face was just perfect. These fans figured out right away what the China players didn't realize until it was too late. They let Mikey know he's not the king, but still kept him around for challenges.

I am a little bit surprised by the Fans eviction. I think it was dumb because you never start off a knife fight by stabbing yourself in the stomach. Mary would have likely been far more beneficial in the immediate battle against the Favorites. Chet showed to be the weakest link. I think the problem is that the Fans are trying to play the blindsiding, backstabbing, I bet you didn't see that coming game way too soon. Splitting your own tribe that early, at least openly, is also a major mistake. They deserve to be crushed in the game.

I am liking Cerie's position in the game right now. If she learned from last time she can milk her swing vote position better. I see in the preview she is supposed to rally her team. That will help crush the Fans. But, her best play could come later. When the Favorites go back to tribal council she should vote with the two couple alliance. She is the fifth wheel either way but couples always hold more power and are less likely to turn on each other. If she votes with the couples and gets some others out then she jumps ship to the Fans at the merge and she can get the couples out then.

This version of Exile Island seems lame so far. I can see where it will give people a chance to make other alliances before the merge. If Cerie plays both sides of her tribe this could play to her hand. Still, I can't envision how opposing tribes finding the idol together will play out. The owner of the idol would be known on both sides.

I'm still not feeling any of the "Fans". I could care less about any of them but have a particular dislike for Joel who is an egomaniac. At this stage in the game you need to do what's in the best interest of the tribe and get rid of the weakest links. It should've been Chet getting voted out since Kathy was safe. I was hoping that somehow, the 3 outcasts would flip the script on Joel and get HIM voted out by secretly letting Mikey and Mary in on the plan and pulling one more person in. They have to make a move sooner or later or those 3 are going to get picked off one by one.

Crazy Kathy scored a few points in my book this week. And that Natalie chick is creepy looking...something with her eyes. Yeesh.

Other observations about the show:
-Ozzy and Amanda making out...gross, considering they haven't brushed their teeth in several days.
-Ozzy is still the super-human athlete and I love watching him in the challenges. And catching a fish on the way back from Tribal Council...in the dark...with his hands! He rocks!
-After winning the challenge, James seemed a bit subdued and half-heartedly hugged Eliza, which I found odd. I know the tribe is split but at least fake it when winning together!
-Cirie came here to play...contrary to what Jonny Fairplay thinks, she's got some strategic thinking going on. Wonder which side she'll decide to go with?

Looking to next week, I hope that James takes that meathead Joel out during the next wrestling challenge. It's the battle we've all been waiting for. :)

Team Favorites all the way!

Looking forward to next week, as James Vs Joel should occur. Let's hope because all I saw in the preview was one of the women losing her top. Oh, they did show more than just that? Sorry, I didn't notice.
Anywho, Chet was the logical choice to go, but Joel served notice that these Superfans are no rubes. Going forward, that may not have been the wisest decision, but it took cojones. I'm not sure what Cirie will do, but it seems like her best bet is to stay with the foursome who took her in as she would always be #5 in the "couples alliance," or at best #3 in order for one couple to eliminate the other. That would actually benefit her if they take 3 to the finals again, but there's no guarantee of that. If she made a secret final 3 deal with John and, oh, let's say Amy, and she made a final 2 with John, then if they did go to a final 2 not 3, she'd be all set. No way could she make a final 2 deal with either of the couples. I'm guessing it will be a final 3, but if I was out there, I'd take nothing for granted.

Were my eyes deceiving me, or did I see Joel holding up Tracy's name on his ballot during the closing credits? If he told everyone else to vote Mary out, why did he vote for Tracy? For deniability?

I'm also confused about Cirie and Kathy working together to find the HII. I thought they would be competing to find it.

Thought for next week: Gravedigger vs the Firefighter. Sounds like a monster truck mash-up!

I'm with you Rhoda, I love the idea of of Penner and Cirie working together. I was one of the few excited about Penner being one of the Favs. I like the way he plays the game, he is funny too. Oh and his blue eyes are beautiful.

"Ozzy is still the super-human athlete and I love watching him in the challenges. And catching a fish on the way back from Tribal Council...in the dark...with his hands! He rocks!"

I absolutely agree k4lakers. Ozzy is such fun to watch particularly during the water challenges and catching a fish in the dark with his hands, fantastic. I would so love to hang with that kid.

I'm with you, TVaddict. I love Jonathan. I loved him in his season too. I really digged his game and agreed with most his strategic assessments of others. At first he came off a little irritating, but he backed off on that quickly enough. I'm thrilled with he and Cirie getting together. She was a smart player as well.

The Exile Island HII was definitely not explained very well. The way it was done, the two people would pretty much have to work together or feel like idiots traipsing back and forth across the water in a full tilt competition for hours on end. But is there an idol for both of them or what?

No, you are right. I saw it, too! It shocked me, considering he was the mastermind behind Mary's ouster in the first place. I can only guess that he did it for deniability when Mikey B. comes calling - "I didn't vote for Mary." I'm not sure, though.

I am loving Ozzy/Amanda! Ozzy is probably my favorite after a certain duo. He is so fun to watch. He killed in the water challange, I swear that boy walks on water!

Joel annoys me so much! And I don't think it was a good move to eliminate Mary so early on. You try to stay under the radar for the first weeks and get the weak ones out. He did a strategic move VERY early on and it'll bite him in the ass very soon.

I can't wait for James to rip him a new one in the challanges :))

I love this survivor and can't wait for next week!

Too much respect to Joel. Yes Mikey stuck his foot in it by talking about his overactive strategy way too early in the game. That seems to be a theme this season where the Favorites had divided into several alliances and two sides before the first challenge. So what does Joel do in reaction to Mikey's stupidity. Does the same thing himself. The first weeks of Survivor are about cutting weak teammates and making the tribe stronger. Other than that you are information gathering for future actions or powerplays. You NEVER make a move this early. Some of those people had no idea why they changed their vote. Joel just told them to. For so-called fans of the game, these guys have no clue as to what they are doing. Everybody seems to want the target on their back!

When watching with my husband, I refer to Joel as "the dude who looks like Billy Ray Cyrus" because it always takes me a few weeks to learn their names.

I, too, wondered what was up when I saw he had written Tracy's name.

Just shows that the Porn Pros at CBS are the ones who picked the so called "Fan Faves". I won't waste time watching any of Survivor or Big Brother9.
