Episode Recap: "Night Shifter"/"Jus In Bello" Double Feature

So what'd you think of the Supernatural double feature? "Night Shifter" introduced the obsessed FBI Agent Victor Henriksen. "Jus In Bello" signaled the end of what could have been a really great ally for the boys in seasons to come (more on that later). An evening of shapeshifters and demons took front and center along with the Winchester brothers. Before we get to the new episode and the newest big bad wanting to make life hell for the brothers, let's count down the top 5 moments from "Night Shifter." This is just according to me, feel free to list your own.

• The "Renegade" ending: Sam and Dean were in S.W.A.T. uniforms running from the law with this Styx tune nipping at their heels.
• Dean validating Ronald's crazy conspiracy theories: He was right about everything except for the mandroid thing. Too bad Ronald was vindicated just in time to be killed. Poor Ronald.
• The introduction of Henriksen. Right off the bat, this guy was a thorn in the Winchesters' side. He was a formidable and entertaining opponent.
• The "news" broke into regularly scheduled programming that just so happened to be the recap. Very clever.
• Sam and Dean's showing of their badges to Ronald at the same time: It was a small moment, but a good one. And didn't Sam make a good FBI agent?

For those of you newbies, here's the original blog for "Night Shifter." Now on to "Jus In Bello", which was a great action-packed episode that furthered the mythology along; freed Sam and Dean up from a life of being chased by the feds (for the time being); and introduced Lilith. After "The Kids Are Alright", I wonder if the producers and writers figured to go with what they're good at: creating kids that are freakin' scary. Her eyes turned white. Have we seen this before? We've always seen the black-eyed thing. What does this mean?

This really did have a very Assault at Precinct 13 kind of vibe to it. But instead of gang members (in the 1976 original, corrupt policemen in the 2005 remake), Sam, Dean, along with Henriksen, Nancy the Virgin and a deputy (think Enos from The Dukes of Hazzard) had to face down a slew of demons. Instead of bullets, this battle was fought with salt, holy water and Latin. First Sam and Dean were prisoners, then after Henriksen was possessed himself, he came around to the way of the Winchesters. They joined forces to defeat the possessed humans camped outside. I knew our favorite FBI Agent could be cruel but the stuff he said about BDW and brainwashing Dean was unusually cruel. But how nice was it to see them come together to fight the good fight? There was a scene between Dean and Henriksen, where Henriksen questioned his existence and saw the merit of doing what Sam and Dean have been doing for years. Jensen and Charles Malik Whitfield had such great chemistry as adversaries and briefly allies.

Unlike Dean in "Sin City", Sam was able to recite the exorcism as if he were reciting the alphabet. This was cool as it was when we heard his voice for the mass exorcism and demon exodus. Loved the little moments between the brothers in the jail cell when Henriksen was taunting them. At first Sam was sitting back nonchalantly, but once the fed verbally attacked Dean and their dad, the way he sat up as if to stand ground with Dean and support him was awesome. Also, it's amazing how Sam can go from sincere to scary in two seconds flat and all to wisely get Nancy's crucifix for instant holy water. As for Dean, he showcased his knack for joking at the most inopportune of times.

I did have a few issues with the show, however.

• Bela sold the boys out. You know what? If the show keeps Bela an antagonist, I'm cool with it. If she's going to be their enemy forever, more power to her. Then I've got no problem with her making Sam and Dean look stupid once again. I just hope the show in the future does not try to redeem her because Bela crossed the line with this one. Leading the feds to the Winchester boys was not cool.

• The death of Henriksen. The whole time I thought it was going to happen, but once it got to the end of the episode, I thought maybe I was wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn’t. What’s the deal with this show killing off really great characters? I understood offing BDW and Gordon, I really did. But I really wanted Henriksen to live. I thought maybe he’d quit the FBI and become a demon hunter – it sounded like that’s where he was heading. Next season Sam and Dean could have run into him in a vampire’s nest or something like that.

• My third issue has to do with guest stars. I love it when the show gets name guest stars. In my world Peter Deluise isn't possessed Deputy Director Steven Groves. He's Officer Doug Penhall from 21 Jump Street. I hate when these type of guest stars get roughly a scene or two scenes then are killed off. Can you say Mercedes McNab or Gary Cole? I enjoyed seeing Deluise, who's no stranger to Vancouver where Supernatural films. He's been a director for both Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis.

Other thoughts:
• Phil Sgriccia did a great job directing both "Night Shifter" and "Jus In Bello."

• We got to see Dean's blue steel mugshot again. Awesome.

• I loved how uncoordinated Sam and Dean were in their chains at first. Until they got a system down.

• Didn't Deputy Director Groves look like he was aiming straight for Dean? What was all that about? I thought these demons wanted Sam dead.

• Who knew Sam and Dean would have a stash of those necklaces that prevent possession? They kicked those to the curb in favor of nifty tats that do the same job.

• I now really do think Ruby was behind what the trickster did to Sam. Originally, this episode was supposed to air before "Mystery Spot." Let's say Ruby had seen Sam side with Dean in "Jus In Bello" first. She'd have seen all the casualties that resulted from not going with her original plan of killing the virgin. So, how else to get Sam to start thinking her way? She got the trickster to put Sam through hell. Sam was thisclose to draining the blood of a human in order to bring Dean back. Just a thought. Let me know what you guys think. Let me know if this even makes any sense.

• Ruby gave Sam and Dean something that would throw Lilith off their trail. I imagine they'll have to lose whatever she gave them considering there are only four episodes left in the season. That is, if Eric Kripke and the Supernatural gang decide to wrap up Dean's deal and Sam vs. Lilith this season. I can't wait to find out when those episodes start airing on the CW April 24th. Until then, see ya.

Favorite Lines:
"Hi guys! It's been a while."

"Why all the sourpusses?"

"Sorry, Dean. Truth is your daddy brainwashed you with all that devil talk and no doubt touched you in a bad place."

"How are we going to Houdini out of this one?" "Good question."

"How's your shoulder?" "It's awesome."

"Would it kill these cops to give us a snack?"

"It's kind of wild right? It's like they're coming right for us. Never done that before. It's like we got a contract on us. Think it's because we're so awesome? I think it's because we're so awesome."

"I shot the sheriff." "But you didn't shoot the deputy."

"I owe you the biggest I told you so ever."

"Smart, how long have you had those?" "Not long enough."

"So it turns out demons are real." "FYI ghosts are real too. So are werewolves, vampires, changelings, evil clowns that eat people." "OK then."

"So yeah. Sign me up for that big mug of wasted my damn life." "You didn't know." "Now I do."

"I got virtue."

"Stop! Stop! Nobody kill any virgins."

"I got a plan. I'm not saying it's a good one. I'm not even saying that it'll work. It sure as hell beats killing a virgin."

"When this is over, I'm going to have so much sex. But not with you."

"Excuse me, I'm looking for two boys. They're brothers. One's really tall and one's really cute." "What's your name, sweetie?" "Lilith."

Great recap.

I completely agree about Bella. If they want to write her as an adversary. Fine. If they want to write her as an enemy. I’m fine with that too.
Just stop:

1) Writing Sam and Dean with the gloves off
2) Or making Sam and Dean complete idiots to make her look good.

This woman has stolen the rabbit’s foot from them putting Sammy in danger. Stole $48,000 from Dean. Had the impala towed. Stole the hand from Dean. Stole the colt. And finally sold them out to the Feds.

With Bella this IS getting ridiculous.

Nice to know someone else caught the bad guys seemed to be aiming for Dean and not Sam. That demon had a clear shot at Sam and yet fired at Dean first? That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Didn’t the bad guy want Sam and not Dean dead?

I know it appears Sam and Dean suffered a Pyrrhic victory last night. But I thing Ruby missed to mention. Even taking in to account the amount of people Lilith killed, the good guys still won this one. Dean and Sam in one fair swoop sent 30-40 of the Demons they let out back to hell. Do the math. That’s roughly 1/7 of the ‘demon army’ they stopped tonight. I loved the fact it was Dean’s plan that pulled it off.

Other than that it was one enjoyable episode that blew by way too fast. It’s a shame about Henderson. I really liked him by the end of the episode and Sam and Dean could use some more solid allies.

Thanks again, Tina. Great update. In fact you pulled me off the ledge - I was bordering on 'jumped the shark' with this one.

Well, you already know from last week that I think that Ruby and the trickster may be in cahoots, I just am not seeing a SOLID connection, just a lot of leads. If we go with this, then maybe deputy director steve was hers, too. He aimed to kill Dean, what better way to get to Sam. She seemed pretty pissed off right from her entrance, must try to notice if it was when she saw Dean and that he was alive. Oh, and the 'gonna kill myself for the greater good' crap? Very suspicious.

Which leads to Sam's Mr. Spock impersenation - The good of the many outweigh the good of the few, or the one...complete 360. May work for the Sam came back different column, but then, wouldn't the laitn exercisisms have had any affect on him, or at least been less effective coming from evil? Gotta look in to that one.

Hendrickson - loved him tonight and I am disappointed to see him be eliminated. I think he would have been a great adversary and made for good story to have the boys occasionally run in to a rookie rambo. Picture him in regulation ghostbusting gear and Dean with a salt shaker! Would have been fun, would have been nice to get new perspective for the now very jaded boys.

Lilith - I am officially offended. I get why the boys don't like witches, they only seem to run in to the evil ones (or, more acurately in some circles, warlocks) but not all of us are Elphaba. And evil queen of the under world a little girl? Does she live in a white room, too? Enough of my venom on that one.

Bela - plot devise used to make the leading characters look like idiots.

If she has an agenda, I stopped caring. The shark is definately circling in her waters.

I am sad that I seem more grumpy than excited about this episode. And I am SO HAPPY it didn't turn out to be a season ender. I don't know if I would have been patient enough to have to wait out the entire summer and then some. Thank goodness its only till April. I need less breaking down and a little more building up, because these boys are starting to turn in to some real sad sacks.

First off great recap as always Tina!!

I know that I am gonna get hell for this, but I cannot keep silent any longer!! If they do not get Bella off this show, and I mean right now, I am gonna hunt Kripke down and feed him to some hellhounds!!!

She is getting out of control, shooting Sammy, stealing Dean's money, getting the Metallicar towed, giving Gordon there location so he can kill them, stealing the colt, and now she goes and hands them to the feds. KILL HER!!!

I mean, Kripke, why do you insist on making Sam and Dean look like total idiots, do you not even know the characters that you created anymore? They are not stupid by any means, but you insist on making them look that way and I am totally fed up!!!

They had an out last night, all they would of had to do was tell Ruby that it was Bella that stole the colt and Ruby could of gone to kill her to get it back. But NOOOOOO!!! They didn't say who stole it.

I will shut up now.

I loved the episode!
And I so didn't expect Lilith to be a little girl. And the whole white eyes thing was a great idea. I can't wait to know where all this is going.

And I don't understand all this Bella hating. I love her!
When Ruby and Bela where introduced, I hated Ruby. Now, with the last few episodes I like her a lot more, but I still like Bela better.
And I hope they don't kill her just because some fans don't like her. I think we're divided in this, and as long as we have both Ruby and Bela, all the fans should be happy because we can at least enjoy the one we like.

And it's too bad they killed Henricksen. I though he was going to die in the battle, and I was relieved he didn't, but then kaboom.

And for those interested, Lilith was played by Rachel Pattee. I knew she looked really familiar, and it's because she appeared on Tin Man (playing young DG), that's where I've seen her before.
I think she'll be great on the role, because she has this sweet but evil-like look that makes her so scary.

Now the waiting begins till April. grrr!

I don't think I have ever had an addiction before - until this darn show. I stay up to watch it and am blogging before work. Heavens, I work around 60 hours a week and I take time for this.

Anyway, I loved the show and really like reading this site's blogs on the weekend. You guys are so insightful.

Tina is really good at getting us thinking. Tina I am glad you are showing a little Bela fatigue.

Does anyone remember how the Colt really works now. In the past it was the Colt AND the bullets that made the supernatural things die. Remember them coveting the final bullets? Anyway, does the Colt hold the magic now and any old bullet works?

Doesn't it seem like Ruby is a pretty low level demon power wise? I mean her real power is that demon killing knife. I don't think they have shown she has much power beyond that.

I would have liked to see if her body is a new one (since she is so old). You know when the demon leaves will her body turn to dust or what? I would like to know what drives a demon's choice in bodies, especially now that Lilith or white eyed demon, chose a little girl. (Lilith just brings Cheers to mind for me and she was actually pretty scary.) The girls always chose hot babes, but the guys don't chose Dean like bad boys sex types (that isn't fair).

Anyway, I just loved the last two episodes - and I hate doing this, but I just can't take the Bela stuff. Once again, the boys are so dumb they walk right into a trap. Bela - dumb boys. That is a very hard story line for me to keep seeing. It is especially bad to see them keep dropping the "Bela has a heart of gold" hints. Like Tina said, who cares if she has an agenda. I don't usually wish anyone death, even in a tv show, but I wish they would plug her and burn her body so that would be the end of her.

I will miss the show during the break, but if they bring back great shows like these last two it will be worth it.

I'm goin' out [of this world] like I came in, kicking and screaming!

- Dave Lister

Finally, Dean gets it! Enough moping, enough brooding, enough fatalism – if he’s going to die anyway, he might as well go out fighting. Too bad little brother is still a bit slow on the uptake. (Whoever said Sam was the smart one?) Dean finally figures out what Lister did when facing his emminent demise – it’s better to die on your feet. This was a great episode – good set up, well thought out and nicely done. With the exception of Ruby’s visit at the end (which, as in Malleus, fell flat) I cannot find much to criticize. Eliminate that last minute and this was easily one of the season’s best episodes.

Ruby gives them a clear choice – sacrifice an innocent to save themselves or suck it up. Dean makes the right choice, echoing his sentiments from a previous episode. (If that’s how we have to win then I don’t want to.) Sam had the same choice last week and just about fell into the trap. (Curiously, that episode was supposed to air after this one, suggesting that ‘thick-brained’ Sam is still struggling. I think Ruby may be getting to him.) Loki gives him the same message: You don’t win by killing innocent people – that makes you become no better than them. (Dean must have a unique perspective on that.)

By my count, this is the first episode that both Bela and Ruby have appeared in, and we have never seen to two of them together yet. Maybe I’m paranoid, but isn’t it suspicious that these two characters, who keep running into the Winchesters every other week, have never met one another?

Ruby’s plan is also suspicious; after all, we have only her word for what the spell would have done. Ruby is supposedly willing to die but then won’t hang around and fight? So she would take 100% chance of dying versus a fighting chance (actually a pretty good one) of surviving? Something doesn’t make sense here. It’s almost as if Ruby’s plan all along was to get them to do the spell (whatever it did). Of course that would only have been necessary if they didn’t have the Colt. But who just stole the Colt from them AND set them up to get arrested so that Ruby could sweep in with her plan in the first place? I’m getting paranoid again…

As for Ruby’s temper tantrum at the end - sorry, it just doesn’t work. What’s to say that Lilith (aka the annointed one) wouldn’t have shown up and done the exact same thing even if they had used Ruby’s spell? Unless she was in the one-mile radius (which seems doubtful) then nothing would have changed. Everyone in the station would still have been killed, except the heroes would have been responsible for Nancy’s death. Ruby's clearly pushing them in the wrong direction and Dean sees it. I’m really starting to dislke her now.

Random thoughts:

How do they track Bela from PA to CO (switching the episodes). How much time is supposed to have passed?

Nancy seems ridiculously trusting. Why would she get that close to Sam in the cell after what she had been told about him? Why not just toss the towel over to him?

That said, why does Sam grab her? If she was nice enough to bring them a towel, why not just ask her for the rosary? A good Catholic would probably give it to them.

Anti-possession tattoos?!? Why didn’t they get those 20 years ago? And if they have a charm that does the same thing, why weren’t they always wearing them before? (I guess the writers just thought of them.)

Names are becoming an issue again. Lilith is a demon from the book of Isaiah. (Midrash says that she was Adam’s first wife who rebelled against God, but there’s nothing in the Bible about that.) So is this Lilith a demon too or just assuming the name?

The other demons seem to have a hard time finding the Winchesters. (This time they have to let the FBI do the legwork.) So how is it that Ruby always knows exactly where they are?

niecew - I still like Bela, but after what she pulled, I just want her to cause trouble for the boys. I don't want her down the road to all of a sudden get redeemed because this time, she went too far. So I hope the show just plays her as a villain. She doesn't have to be a one-dimensional villain, the show can give her layers and some depth, but at the end of the day I hope she stays the troublemaker.

Tina--That's exactly why I love her. She's trouble, and as long as she stays that way she's fun.
I also hope they keep her that way. The boys already have Ruby as an ally (supposedly).

First off, some thoughts about Nightshifter.

I had forgotten how really really good this episode is. The tension's high, the pacing is taut, the guys are showing us why they're smart, tough and caring. Ronald was cast perfectly and I was very sorry to see him go. The episode had gravitas and repercussions - and even a little humor (which Sherri is which?). In short, I loved it.

Jus in Bello will take a little more time to absorb mentally. I liked it, I just have to sort it all out in my head. I really liked the seige feel and the tension, and that there are a ton of questions coming after.

- Why are the demons now coming after the boys in such large numbers, and in such a dramatic fashion?
- Did Lilith send them?
- Why DID Dean get shot, and not Sam?
- Why does Lilith even bother to go after Sam, after he's shown no inclination to take up the mantle for which she's pursuing him?
- Like someone said above, what is Ruby's real motivation?
- Why did Henrickson have to die? Man's got the sweetest dimples...I mean, he seemed like he was on the verge of learning the hunting trade. I was totally intrigued by that possibility.

Ruby: While I remain intrigued about her role in this whole affair, if I have to hear her constantly harping at the guys like that again, I'll hit the mute button. One. Shrill. Note. (But I did like the line about the breath mint.)

Bela: I get that she was a plot device, but she's past the point of redemption for me. I get that maybe she's got some other plan for the Colt than to sell it. Frankly, I don't care anymore what her goal is. (But I still laugh whenever I hear the line about 'rolling naked in money.')

That said, I was a little worried when Ruby said the other power was a woman. I was so afraid it would be Ellen! Thankfully it was not. Ellen rocks, and I can't wait for her to come back!! Hey, I would even be glad to see Jo again. (The Jo from BUABS, not the early Jo.)

Thanks for the recap Tina. I'm glad you noted the scene where Sam is sitting back in the jailcell, then sits up next to Dean. He looked incredibly badass.

I loved this episode. To me, it had everything: action, tension, and humor.

A couple thoughts.

Bela: She's going to use that colt for something else. She's not selling it to the highest bidder. We know there's something about her past and I think she's going to use the colt to rectify things.

Why did the demon shoot Dean and not Sam? I think Lilith put the demon up to it, wants Dean out the way and wants Sam alive, for whatever reason.

Tina - great re-cap! I, too, thought Henrickson would make a great hunter and could have totally seen him in the life since he was so burned out about the FBI. Our side needs all the help it could get and with a little education, Henrickson would have been an awesome addition to the hunting community.

Alex - mornin', darling! *kisses* If it makes you feel any better, the youngest looked at me and said, why don't they just kill her? about Bela. Good darn question. What she did was beyond the pale and for someone who knows the deal about the war ... oh, wait. She doesn't have a conscience. Got it!

*shakes head* Still ... it's time for her to go because this is the umpteenth time she's showed up the boys and c'mon! They're not stupid. Sam is Ivy League education and a lifer and Dean ... his plan was pretty awesome even if it didn't get Lilith. He did manage to get 30 to 40 demons sent back to hell. That takes brains and cunning.

I didn't really question the demons going after the Winchesters like that, actually. Strategies often change during war and apparently, one of the demon generals decided this would be a good way to get the brothers who have caused so much, well, hell.

Soooo glad we get the extra 4 eppys.

And just how freaking cool was Nightshifter again with Renegade?! *love*

Tina -- you never let me down. I have no time today (seriously) and I couldn't help but sneak away and read your recap. You have me addicted.

I peeked at the rest of the posts for last week's epi earlier this week and I have to say that I'm in awe of the stream of logic you amazing people apply to this show. I could never match thought processes by posters such as Hugo, Arafel, AriGato, racestaffer, and others.

So, I am just going to gush about the only show that has captured my attention so completely in all my years of TV watching.

Seriously, this show is freaking amazing. Even when there are unanswered questions or plot holes or question marks above my head, I'm willing to roll on and accept because the way the story is delivered.

Now, I have to say in the war between Bela and Ruby, I now find them both intriguing for VERY different reasons. I don't like Bela, but that's what intrigues me about her. Personally, I can't wait to see what happens when Ruby and Bela end up in the same room together. I hope there's blood. Because Ruby ticked me off at the end of this.

Skipping around a bit...but trying to keep my thoughts cohesive...

When Hendrickson came back to the cell to banter it up with a snarky Dean, I loved watching Sam. His forced disinterest in that slouched pose totally vanished when Hendrickson said that Dean was never going to see him again.

I could practically feel his panic at the thought of Dean's ticking clock and not getting out of this situation and actually GOING to solitary. I know it wasn't planned -- that this was actually supposed to have been episode 11 and Mystery Spot episode 12 -- but it worked SO WELL looking back at "Sam without Dean" and the idea that that could be true w/out the Trickster scaring Sam to death. And then when Hendrickson mentioned John, Sam sits up, either in affront at what Hendrickson said, or in back up to Dean's defense of John, it didn't matter. It was his body language saying "Hey, watch it, buddy" that just... yeah. *pets him*

Dude! Doug Penhall! I haven't seen him since 21 Jump Street! I guess everyone has a boss -- even Hendrickson. WHY I didn't suspect him is beyond me. When he shot Dean I gasped. I mean BLAM -- right through the shoulder, blood on the wall, Dean falling back... Sam stepped up there, too, man, and latinated the hell out of Penhall, saving them both. Whew. Goosebumps.

The thing I noticed about the situation with the rosary was that even though Dean was shocked and confused that Sam grabbed Nancy, he didn't do anything until it was over and then lobbed a "what the hell?!" Sam's direction. He's backing his brother. I mean, of course he questions him later, but in that moment, he trusted that Sam had a reason and I so dug that.

Oh, Lord, and they had a patching up Dean's shoulder scene with the bicep of doom staring at us. Staring RIGHT AT US. *needs a moment*

The Demon Swarm was intense. I knew they weren't going to get in, what with all the salt and Devil's Traps, but wow. I was still worried.

And good Lord. Tattoos. The reveal of the tattoos was... *takes another moment* Sam's "not long enough" quip had me saying "no kidding" -- I mean you're so right, Hugo. I wish they'd figured that out when they were kids. All three of them. The torment that would have saved Dean. Well, sure, and John and Sam not having the memories of being possessed and blah blah blah, but Dean would have been spared torture by his father and brother. Ah, well. 20/20 hindsight. Moving on!

I really liked the conversation between Dean and Hendrickson. It had me hoping that they might actually have an ally -- and realizing that their luck couldn't be that good, so Hendrickson was obvoiusly going to die. But I think it's amazing how quickly Dean is able to identify with people, get on their level, find like for like inside of another. Sam's the one that had normal for awhile, yet it's Dean that is the "people person" for the most part.

Secrets... always secrets with these two. Are they kept from each other for protection or out of fear? Do they just need that one piece of information that's theirs alone? Makes me wonder about other tight-nit relationships.

I know that there are going to be some heavy discussions about Ruby's character and her being willing to die to give Sam a chance and what that means about her and about Sam's importance, but I'm saving my thoughts on that until a more coherent time.

The ensuing conversation between the brothers was fantastic. Gotta wave my Dean flag for a moment. I love Dean's character. I mean he is everything I'd create if I were able to create a hero in a story. He is the one constantly called out for his "sins" and his immorality. It's a running joke, apparently, that he's the weak one, the dimmer one, the brawn. He likes the women and he likes the booze and he has poorly timed cracks... but when it came down to it, it's DEAN that stops them from taking the innocent life of a girl "who hasn't even been laid." His "if that's how we win wars, then I don't want to win" should have had a crescendoing soundtrack behind it. He is the moral compass now. And may have always been. He is willing to sacrifice himself, but damn sure won't sacrifice anyone else. AND he's the one that came up with the plan that saved everyone. Sorta. I mean, well, you know.

The end was action-packed and full of some fantastic looks from Dean to Hendrickson -- from Dean period, really. It revealed that dreaded new power in the west, and the nagging little idea I've had and kept to myself (though you guys have probably already covered it and I just missed it) got a little stronger.

Ruby's condescending manner at the end really ticked me off -- Dean's plan was made of awesome and it DID save people. You don't fight battles to guarnatee the people you save will live forever, you fight them so that the people you save will survive the battle. Dean's plan saved the townsfolk (whose bodies survived posession). But perhaps more importantly it saved Dean and Sam's humanity for one more day.

Sure Nancy was willing, but killing Nancy for the greater good would have killed a piece of Dean that he can't afford to let go and could have potentially sent Sam off the edge he's so obviously teetering on. There's no way Dean could have known that one person would get away.

"Saving people, hunting things, the family business." That's what Dean knows. And it's what he's always believed Sam knows. And I believe Dean's going to live by that code until it brings about his end.

The nagging idea is... *deep breath* that they'll hook us into Season 4 with Sam taking up the mantle of responsibility for his demon followers thinking that it would be the only way to defeat Lillith -- thinking that he could do so with a "good" intention. Keep his followers from killing humans and destroying the world. Just get rid of a "worse" bad. But that would put him on the other side of the line from his brother, leaving Dean with no choice but to fight to get his brother back. To save him. As he's always done.

Don't throw things. *hides* Okay, so yeah, now I'm really late. If you read this, thanks. I enjoy being on the edge of the brain storm you all create. :) Slainte.

Haven't been by to blog in a while, but I can't help myself this time. This ep was fantastic! There was a lot to learn about Sam and Dean's future and Ruby. Also some really great Dean lines!

I swear when Hendrickson said, "I shot the sheriff." I yelled out the line right as Dean said it! :)

Take on Ruby

I think I am inclined to agree with you. I am not saying Ruby wants Dean dead perse, but I think she wanted Sam to toughen up. But I still am a little skeptical about the whole situation. I understand that she remembers her humanity and maybe wants to destroy the demon world as much as possible and that's why she chose Sam; Afterall he went the opposite of what YED had planned. But what does Ruby ultimately plan to accompolish by defeating these demons other than vengence/retribution?!? There is always something more than the obvious in our SN world! I am curious on whether or not it would make a bigger difference in Hell?!? Like would it make for less demonic presence in Hell? And would that persuade newer souls down there less or take longer to forget humanity? Really what's the purpose? I guess only Kripke knows.

Sam's Ongoing Role:

As much as these brothers love eachother, they sure do keep secrets! Being a sibling myself, I understand the idea of not burdening the other with information that would just excite a situation. But HELLO! This is a much bigger situation...Like end of the world BIG! Sam is still witholding info from Dean (turn around from last season...Dean from Sam)! Like hey Dean I have demon blood in me. And oh yeah mom knew YED! This might be a little important.

So I understand that he has demon blood, but he died and didn't win the grand prize of YED's sidekick. He came back to life, killed the number one chosen one and is still fighting on the side of Good. So why the hell would all these demons still see him as a threat to rule the underworld? What's the catch? Sam shows no powers, at least that we or he knows of. Otherthan being the proverbial thorn in the side killing off demons, he's not looking to rule Hell!

Any thoughts?
