Episode Recap: The Girlfriend

Whuttup TV Guiders? It feels like forever since I've blogged anything that didn't involve the ridiculousness that is Tyra Banks. It's good to be back to a scripted show. When we last saw Sam, she got dumped by her first post-amnesia boyfriend. After getting dumped, Sam realized she still had feelings for Todd. I'm hoping the writers don't jump right into this because that's the type of stuff that can ruin a show this early on. Now for my recap:

This week Sam continued to question her relationship with Todd. After some time apart, the two happened to run into each other on the street while Sam was trying out her jump-roping skills. Todd seemed glad to see her and suggested they get together soon. Later that evening while Sam's mom tried to convince her to have a makeover night with her, Todd invited Sam over for a chilli dinner. Ecstatic by the thought of possibly rekindling her relationship with Todd, Sam prettied herself up and went over to her old apartment. Once there, Todd's true intentions came out when he revealed that he wanted to invite his current girlfriend Chloe to move in with him. This sent Sam running to her relationship guru, Andrea, who advised that she slip on her old Sam shoes and resort back to her old schemes for getting unavailable men. Cue the flashback to "the wine trick" where Sam told some poor girl that her boyfriend just sent over a bottle of wine to her table. Delightfully evil! However, just make things nice and balanced the board president for Sam's building showed up at the coffee shop to let her know that subletting is forbidden in her building. Score one for the good girl! Sam was eager to break the news to Todd and Chloe that they'd be getting a new roommate. Just when Sam thought she had the upper-hand, she realized that living with her ex and his new girlfriend wouldn't be as fun as she'd expected. It was all private jokes about monopoly and stuffed koala bears which was enough to make Sam regret her decision. But the situation got even worse for her when Todd and Chloe decided to call it a night and Chloe dragged her boy toy to the bedroom. Poor Sam!

Meanwhile, at the Newly household Sam's mom was so desperate for some bonding time that she adopted Dena as her second daughter just to have someone to do makeovers with. As Regina convinced Dena to do makeovers, Andrea convinced Sam to take her advice to get rid of Chloe. Her little plan entailed planting herpes cream, an ovulation chart, and an ovulation kit in the bathroom of the apartment. Back at the Newly house, Dena and Regina drunkenly revealed their deep dark secrets to one another while made up to look like 80's pop stars. At the height of their drunken state, they decided to TP the house of the woman who beat Regina in a beauty pageant during her younger years.

As Sam tried to get some sleep at her apartment, she rolled over to find Chloe staring down at her with a warning that she better not try to steal Todd away. Wow...quite the psycho! I'm guessing the herpes cream won't be necessary. The next morning Sam woke up to a homemade breakfast prepared by Chloe. When Todd and Sam had a moment to speak in private, he confronted her for threatening Chloe. As Sam denied the allegations and tried to tell the truth, Chloe ran in showing her butchered stuffed koala which she also pinned on Sam. Let the games begin!

When the sun rose over the Newly house, Dena and Regina awoke to the drunken mess they had created the night before. Dena drew the turtle on the wall that had gotten her rejected from the art school that accepts everyone and Regina found a giant ceramic bunny rabbit with a full coat of lipstick painted on it. Dena tried to thank Regina for a lovely evening but was quickly shushed and sent home. Back at Sam's apartment again, Sam set her own attempt at an evil scheme into motion. She pretended that she and Todd had just finished rekindling their romance when Chloe came home. The plan seemed to be a success until Todd walked in the front door. When the group finally decided to discuss the issue and Sam got Chloe to confess to butchering her own stuffed bear, Chloe admitted she was just jealous of how beautiful and intelligent Sam is. Sam decided to finally leave her apartment once and for but not before trying once more for Todd by claiming she found Chloe's ovulation kit. After a brief encounter with her all-knowing doorman, Sam returned home broken-hearted once again seeking the comfort of her hungover mother.

Overall, I was a little disappointed with the return of Samantha Who. Don't get me wrong, there were a number of great one-liners but I think I just really want Sam to move on from Todd. As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, I feel like if they get together too soon it will ruin the show. I'd love see her interact with other men before they return to the Sam/Todd relationship. I really only got enjoyment out of Jean Smarts hilarious lines to Dena. I would of liked a bit more Andrea though. So what'd you all think? Was the long-awaited return as good as where we left off? Did the psycho-Chloe storyline work for you? Let us know!

Memorable Moments:
-Andrea throwing Biscotti crumbs at the coffee guy for mispronouncing her name
-Regina Newly convincing Dena to stay and do makeovers:
"Your mother's dead and my daughter is out gallivanting, you see how we're both suffering? You were a very special little girl...and that wonder woman costume you wore throughout fifth grade proved it! So what kind of wine does Wonder Woman drink...Cabernet or Tequila?"

Quote of the week:
"Now you have to spill a secret about yourself. Something fun...like a dream that was crushed!"

Did something about the show feel different to anyone else? I don't think it was anything bad (since I still enjoyed the show). Maybe it's just because it's been off the air for so long...

As I said, I enjoyed the episode but I think my favorite part was Deena's make up foundation! I'm not sure why that struck me more than anything else--maybe because I see women all the time A) wearing a foundation that doesn't match their skin tone--AT ALL and B) they don't blend it down their necks so it's even more glaringly obvious that it doesn't match and that they are, indeed, wearing make up. In everyday life it's not as funny but seeing it on a fake makeover on TV made if funny--to me, anyway.

I think the 2nd favorite part was the turtle on the wall. I still see that commercial on TV sometimes! "Take this simple and enjoyable art test..." God, did they even remake the commercial or are they just airing the same one from 15 years ago?

I was wondering how they'd make us be more against Chloe than we already were (just for being Todd's girlfriend). The psycho route could be enjoyable--but I agree that perhaps Sam and Todd shouldn't become a couple quite so soon. But maybe a few glimpses here and there of what could be (many seasons from now, hopefully!)

so i'm really happy this show is back but i was a bit diappointed...

I too wanted more Andrea and also was hoping that Sam would have kicked Chloe out of her apartment! She was *too* nice in that whole situation...that B*tch would have had her bags packed right after she stood overtop of me, but that's just me i suppose lol.

The makeup was hysterical and I too found that Dena's unblended too dark foundation was so funny...to me, Dena and Mrs. Newly's characters can do no wrong :)

I loved this episode! The scenes with Dena and Regina cracked me up. My favorite part was when Sam came home and questioned why there was a turtle on the wall and if the bunny had been there this whole time.

I agree it is too soon for Todd and Sam to get together, but Psycho Cloe was fun to watch and I think it might Sam remember who she used to be. The doorman's comments were also great.

I think there were just the right amount of Andrea scenes tonight. There was a lot of funny action with the other characters tonight and it was fun getting to know Mrs. Newly and Dena better. Andrea had a lot of air time in the early episodes, but it's time to get to know the other people in Sam's life too.

Cruciatus, I know how they can make us hate Chloe even more--by casting Kiele Sanchez, formerly known as the universally despised Nikki (of Nikki & Paulo) on Lost! I must admit I did like her on Married to the Kellys, though!

Maybe the something different about the show was that Dad was missing last night - I could not help but notice his absence - BUT I still loved to have Samantha and everybody else back!!!

My favorite scenes were when Regina and Dena were doing their make-overs...how cute were Dena's comments about how pretty Regina was and how grateful Regina was to hear them. *sigh* - I just love Jean Smart.....

Can't wait 'til next week to see them again!

I don't think this episode was below par at all. But I had almost forgotten that the comedy on this show is just a tad offbeat, so maybe it takes one or episodes, after such a long break, to remind ourselves just how hilarious (and charming) Christina Applegate really is.

Did anyone else find it incredibly annoying that Sam didn't suggest Todd move in with Chloe, if he cared about her so much? It was unbelievably rude that they had her sleeping on the sofa in her own home!

I agree with other posters that I couldn't understand why Sam let Todd live there with Chloe. Maybe I missed something from previous episodes, but why exactly does Todd live in Sam's place?

I agree that it seems way to soon for Samantha to be "realizing she has feelings for Todd" let alone to have her go after him like she did in this episode. My favorite thing about this relationship was that post amnesia Sam has been becoming real friends with Todd. And the silly romantic in me believes that the best romances start there. In other words, I really like that it seemed like they were building toward a stronger relationship. This episode really felt like the goal was to trash that friendship. That's why I spent that entire storyline cringing; not laughing. Andrea was the highlight of the ep for me. I loved her chucking breadcrumbs at the coffee place guy.

I was quite satisfied with this return. It did feel a little differently but I to think that this may have been them dealing too quickly with the Sam/Todd ship in this capacity at this stage. They were building a solid foundation of friendship and that was working for me also. However, hopefully this episode was necessary to lay the ground work for that in future eps.

Loved the makeover bonding session with Regina and Dena. Too funny! I also loved Andrea throwing the crumbs at the barrista. Her character is full of flaws, played flawlessly.

I also adored the return of Frank. Good old Frank. Even though he stated that he didn't see much difference between Sam and Chloe, I think she's wearing him down. And Christina's playful way of interacting with the security camera was gorgeous. Their bit about interacial couples on tv also cracked me up.

All in all I'm happy and ready for next week.

I was so excited to see Timothy on the show! I hope it's not just a one time thing because this is getting exciting...they couldn't pick a hotter guy and the show was definately worth waiting for:)
