« Samantha Who?
Episode Recap: The Boss
This week the Funk came to town and rocked Sam's world. And by the Funk I mean Sam's wealthier and more attractive other boss played by Die Hard villain, Timothy Olyphant.
As the episode kicked off, Sam was still obsessing over Todd. She was practically begging him for another chance and he was having none of it. When she arrived at the office another face from her past entered her life and it seemed as though he was just what Sam needed to get her mind off of Todd.
Meet Winston Funk. He's handsome. He's charming. And he's filthy freakin' rich. He also happens to be in love with Sam and proposes to her within minutes of seeing her again. If only Andrea wasn't so desperately in love with him. While old Samantha probably would have jumped at the chance to bag herself a billionaire, new Sam felt it appropriate to come clean to her boss/beau that her condition wiped all memories of him and that she couldn't accept his proposal. Later, she described the situation to Dena who found all of the details to be perfect material for the romance novel she was writing for her online writing class.
A while later, Sam continued to stalk Todd and tracked him down at the coffee shop. She attempted to explain to him that she still has feelings for him but again, he didn't want to hear it. Feeling desperate, Sam sought the advice of her parents. She arrived home to find Winston waiting for her and of course, mama and papa Newly were smitten. And really...who wouldn't be? If the Funk couldn't make Sam remember him, he realized he'd have to create new memories to get her to fall for him again. After seemingly making it snow with the snap of his fingers, it appeared that he just might succeed. Leave it to the parents to go and ruin a perfectly romantic moment.
The next day at another office meeting, Sam's attempt to keep her relationship with Winston went south when she giggled like a schoolgirl at one of the Funk's lame jokes. Andrea could smell Sam's BS from a mile away and called her out on it. Sam tried to play it off that she kept trying to get Funk interested in Andrea but just kept digging the hole deeper for herself by revealing that they not only had dinner together, but he also met her parents and proposed. I never thought I'd say this but POOR ANDREA! Sure, her feelings for the Funk were purely superficial but still...her newly reformed amnesiac best friend keeps getting all the good luck and the good guys.
As Sam confided in Dena once again (and as Dena jotted down every detail for her romance novel,) the Funk tried once more to get Sam to go on a date with him. Although at first she refused to entertain the idea, it occurred to her that she was only depriving herself of a relationship with a guy who genuinely seems to care for her. She realized there would be plenty of other men for Andrea and Todd wasn't going to come around any time soon and so she accepted the invitation. Just when things seemed to be going well, Sam had another flashback and remembered a time when she blatantly screwed over Andrea. Time for new Sam to set things right. In a very My Name is Earl-esque twist, Sam's good karma paid off. Just as she set out to find her best friend, Todd found a tabloid showing Sam as the Funk's new mystery blonde and the boy got jealous. Sam caught up to Andrea at their favorite bakeshop and after admitting their past indiscretions, the two bffl's made peace once again.
That night, just as Sam decided to take a break from love karma came knocking at her door (literally.) Although she had been receiving little tokens of affection from the Funk, she opened the door one last time to find Todd standing there with a copy of the tabloid in his hands. He grilled her about her relationship with the Funk and then passionately kissed her before storming out the door. So much for stringing us along.
What a sweet episode! Last week I complained that the episode seemed a bit off but this week everything was back on track. There was a perfect balance of all the characters and even Papa Newly made an appearance. Dena was hilarious while writing her romance novel and I loved seeing the more vulnerable side of Andrea. The only thing that I was a bit disappointed with, which I've probably mentioned in every blog for this show, is that I'm not ready for Todd and Sam to get back together. I loved the Funk and would love to see him stick around for a few more episodes. Hopefully we have not seen the last of him. So what did y'all think? Did the fairy tale fall flat? Do we like Todd or the Funk?
Memorable Moments: -Andrea getting all goofy over her crush: "It's not the money, I swear! I'd love him even if he were just a millionaire." -Sam explaining her condition to Funk and the things she can't remember: "I'm still a little fuzzy about what an REO Speedwagon is" -Sam's repeated messages to Todd: "You don't have to answer my calls because by now I remember your routine. I know when you get your coffee and how you feel guilty for eating those cinnamon rolls so you burn off the calories by running in the park like a girl!" -Mama Newly trying to convince Sam she should marry Winston: "He's been on magazine covers, he flies jets, and with the snap of his fingers he can have every inch of this house weatherstripped!" -Andrea telling Sam off: "I hate you...and I don't like your shoes today...and if you fell off the face of the earth, I wouldn't even care!" -Dena's fake British accent as she continued to write her romance novel. -Sam accepting the Funk's offer for a date: "Yes, you can buy me coffee. A cup not a franchise." -"Um, you said you didn't want to see me again. What am I supposed to sit around and not get married?"
Quote of the week: Sam, upon entering the Funk's limosine "Are you so rich that you smell like cupcakes?"

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Timothy Olyphant - ever since he was on S&TC years ago, I have had a crush on him (shaved head and all). I hope he is on a few more episodes to shake things up so Todd rethinks things with his new crazy girl.
I need to start DVRing these episodes because the lines are so good (especially Jean Smart) and I always forget them.

Awesome show last night! I squealed when Todd kissed her, but I'm with you, Adam. Let's let that one play out for a while. The Funk is too hot, and I'd like to see him stick around for a few eps. Of course, Mama Newly is the one who turned the photo in to the tabloid! Too funny.

Well this was my fave episode so far. And add me to the group that is lovin the Funk and thinks we need to see plenty more of his character. I've been anticipating his arrival since it was first reported he'd be making an appearance, and WOW he didn't disappoint.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a solid Sam/Todd shipper, but I'm happy to see that play out over the course of a few seasons and in the meantime, I most definately would love to see a steady relationship with Sam and somebody else. Funk can be that somebody else anyday in my books.
Loved Dena's accent in being totally immersed in her writing thing. Also loved that we are seeing her do something else, other than just pop up randomly in Sam's life. She's getting fleshed out as a character and that's all good for me.
I too was shocked with my feeling of 'Poor Andrea', another fleshing out of the character there.

To quote Len from Dancing with the Stars, "Three words: FAB-U-LOUS!" This was my favorite episode of the season so far. The writing was back on par from the slip-up last week.
I, personally, LOVE the Funk. I was disappointed that Sam's hockey date broke up with her so soon, and I hope this time around the producers allow someone besides Todd a real shot at her heart. The plot would become too predictable and kind of pathetic if Sam were obsessed over Todd until he admitted that she was the one for him. The Funk (I'll never tire of saying that) could be just the man to shake things up, and give Sam back her confidence in the relationship department.
