Backstage: Daniel Day-Lewis, Daring to Say the Name

10:17: Daniel Day-Lewis steps in, and immediately faces questions about why he mentioned Heath Ledger. "[He's] all I've been thinking about for the past few days," Lewis says. "I never met him.... But I'm absolutely certain he'd have done many wonderful things."

Carrying the same gravitas off screen as he does on, he continues, "I think we should leave him alone, and leave his family alone. But that's not going to happen, we should just stop encouraging people to have greater and greater interest in raking over every detail, which is none of our business, anyway."

10:20: Even though he is an actor's actor — not to mention super-into his union — Lewis still gushes about his fellow thesps who are kicking it with him at the awards show. "It makes you feel sheepish when you're in the company of such fine actors," he says. "It's been a mighty year."

But as for film criticism? Not so sheepish: "We're all force-fed so much information about films now.... I'd prefer if films could just speak for themselves.... It seems self-defeating to keep talking about it."

10:22: And what of the theme of oil in There Will Be Blood? Was it a surprise that an issue that was so central early in the century is still significant now? In a word, "No" — and then he vanished. Now that is gravitas. — Anna Dimond
