Episode Recap: Vocal Expression

Admit it, over the last few weeks you missed Natalie’s diva drama. It never really went away of course, but they must have edited quite a bit out in the last week or two because we really didn’t see that much. But this week, we got it all.

The episode starts off nicely with Natalie claiming she has an advantage over the other girls because she’s beautiful and she claims that “beauty is a talent.” I actually think I agree with that. I mean, I’m fat. And that my friends, is really tough to keep up. I have to eat a lot of greasy foods and usually two portions instead of one and I have to avoid things with low fat. With this world filled with 100 calorie packs, that takes something extra to keep up with. So I can see why is must be hard to be beautiful too.

Then of course, Natalie walks out on Ken Hicks. If it was me I would have been scared to death of the lips and fake eyebrows and ran out screaming a long time ago, but she waited until Ken started talking back to her. As much as Ken is a diva himself, he’s very right in saying how disrespectful Natalie was. And I liked it backstage when Natalie tried hugging him and he gave the whole “step off, girlfriend” look to her. Big props to Ken.

These other girls have some big flaws as well and we saw a lot of them tonight. Jenna just seems to have a billion excuses why she has to stop practicing, Charlye sounded very stiff in the studio and Chrystina forgot the lyrics to a pretty simple song.

I’ve said from the beginning that Natalie had to be the favorite, but this week really hurt her. I have to think Tiffanie, Nichole and Carrie are almost flawless right now.

I actually enjoyed the episode this week, but I hate the way the performances are done on this show – and that’s a statement about the entire series, not just this week. The two performances chosen were a ballad from Destiny’s Child and a classic dance tune in “Flashdance…What a Feeling.” Jenna hung up her boa because she’s not more energetic and fun, but they put her in a group singing a slow song so how could she be? But it’s the overall choices that bother me. Those songs were complete opposites. I just don’t think it’s fair to choose a modern ballad and an early 80’s cheesy dance track to compare the girls. And the show does this every week.

Overall this week, no big deal that Jenna went home because she wasn’t going to make the group anyway. But we’re getting close to the point where one of these girls could really slip up and a favorite could be saying goodbye soon.

Until next week, friends.

Actually, the Emotion song was a 70's song, sung by the BeeGees. I think it was revamped by Destiny's Child.

I think Jenna should have gone home last week, giving us more time to see Jamie. However, this week it seemed that Chrystina should have gone home. I guess they are going by overall rather than just that week's performance.

I agree that Tiffanie, Nichole and Carrie look like the favorites. Tiffanie and Carrie have the best vocals and are solid performers. Nichole (looks like a not-so-innocent Mandy Moore) can sing, too, but she is the cutest of the bunch, IMO. My bigest concern is actually between Nichole and Carrie. Carrie seems to always be doing the best on vocals. However, will they really allow 2 blondes (Carrie and Nichole) in the final lineup? I figured they would have a group including a darker complexion (Tiffanie), a blonde (Carrie has better vocals, but Nichole has more charisma and might be a better draw), and a brunette (Natalie?).

I liked Natalie up until this show. Her attitude was horrible last night, grant it she is beautiful but Ken was right in pointing that the biggest stars just don't walk out of the studio. If I was a judge I would have sent her home just for that. I also agree that Tiffanie, Nichole, and Carrie are the best. Next week puts Tiffanie, Charlye, and Chrystina against Natalie, Carrie, and Nichole, probably trying to see who stands out amongst each group, since by outward appearances, these groups "look" very similar (you know what I am trying to say ;)

I haven't heard a song written by the Bee Gees called modern. You sound like my dad!

I guess I can agree with you with what's up with the song selection; however, you do know that the balad was a re-make of the 70's song by the BeeGees.
