What a Girl Wants
Episode 7
The Challenge: New “clients” were brought in to help crown the winner for this challenge. For the first time in the series, the client picked the designer. Each designer was given a $250 budget to make a dress for the “most important day in a girl’s life”. Confirmation? Bat Mitzvah? Cotillion? Super Sweet Sixteen!?! Graduation? Wedding? No. Not quite.
Prom!
Wait, what, most important...? But I assume the word “girl” should be stressed.
I thought it was the worst of the season. It hasn’t been too long since I attended a prom and personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in any of those dresses.
The Designers: The episode had its funny moments, but the drama between Maddie and Christian was absurd. A designer should never blame their client. However, if you’ve worked with people and had to use the phrase, “The customer is always right”, then you know that sometimes (if not, always) the customer is really just crazy. Brown, gold, ruffles, lace… the mental vision would make all of Joan Rivers' faces fall off. But why did Christian feel the need to go along with it? He has always been very confident and outspoken about his designs. He did everything Maddie asked him and everyone seemed shocked by the outcome. Some teenagers possess the “I know everything” attitude, but again: Brown? Gold? Ruffles? Lace? Also known as an 80s bridezilla on crack.
Moving on… Chris’ dress was my favorite. It looked like a real prom dress. Long, pretty and elegant. The client, Krista, loved it. It still didn’t seem flashy enough for a prom though. I think a different color would have made the dress pop! Perhaps, a rich fuchsia or deep purple (satin fabric) would have made the dress look less bridesmaid and more glamorous. I loved the mother’s reaction when Chris asked them what they thought of his portfolio AND when he assured them that he was the model in the photos. The mother looked like she was going to faint!
Sweet P did a great job. I thought she should have won. Her dress was elegant and somewhat glamorous. I’m glad she listened to her inner voice. Her client wanted to wear a cocktail napkin, but Sweet P knew better.
Did anyone really like Victorya’s dress? The color was bold, but it was short, big and the rhinestone detail made it look cheap. Less is more. I think a long, fully beaded gown would have had less going on than the dress Victorya designed. Am I being too judgmental? Because I don't care. Some people may have liked the dress, but as my friend Erin stated last night, “That may have been a nice dress for right now, but a few years from now she will look at a picture and hate it.” And I know many will argue that no one likes what they wore five years ago. Well, I never thought Victorya’s dress was “in”. Imagine it on a rack in Macy's. Seriously, it would have gone to clearance in a week.
The Decision: I completely disagreed. I thought all the designers lacked compassion and ambition with this challenge. It should have been Ricky. Kevin has never scored low or placed in the bottom. I literally had tears in my eyes when they announced Ricky safe. It wasn’t fair. Maybe if the right choice had been made, I would have liked this episode. All and all, it was new TV, which is scarce in these dark times of television.
Good luck Kevin!
And another thing: I thought this was a competition for the real models as well. They’ve competed in 4 out of 7 challenges. Can we stop with the surprise "guest" models already? Aside from me yelling at the TV screen "Eat something!", I still kind of miss them...
UPDATE: Check out my interview with Kevin Christiana here! Very cool guy. I'm so bitter about his exit...

Your last comment was exactly what I was going to post. I even wrote a note(on my TV Guide!) to mention it.
The actual models for the show haven't done very much--and yet, one will still be auf'd next week--for no reason. The designers probably already have their favorites from previous weeks--but it still must hurt to be cut for not even modeling anything!
Though, with that said, I've always found the "model competition" aspect of the show to be really lame. They should just hire lesser-knowns every week and flash their name as they model. That way they can add to their portfolio that they've been on Runway without worrying about being kicked off. One time shot, that's it.
I don't feel we learn enough about the models (nor do I want to. This isn't Top Model). I don't think "Oohh, he has to work with Charlotte? That sucks!" I don't learn their names. I don't really learn their faces. I just don't care!
(But since this IS an aspect of the show, they should be earning it by actually modeling!)

Exactly. I sound like a shallow b*tch, but most of the models arn't even attractive and don't get me started on how they walk... But one of them will win a photoshoot and spread. At least let them compete for it!

I totally agree with you about Chris's design everything about it was beautiful. That dress should of been in the top 3. How in the world did the judges pass up on that on is beyond me.Sweet P's came in second for me. Im glad she didn't listen to her client about the orginal style of the dress. If she didn't it would of turned out to be another Toni Braxton Grammy dress from a couple of years ago.
I also hated Victorias.
Another thing is why couldn't it be Ricky instead of Kevin. His looked like a pillow case, with straps. And Im getting sick and tired of him crying all the time.
I knew christian was in trouble when his client took over and started to sketch her dress. but he should of put some of his own input into the dress. i do like him with without the flock of seagalls hairstyle though. he should really think twice about changing it. plus during the previews didn't they show christian yelling at the judges at one point. i remember seeing him doing that. they must of edit that part out.
This challenged brought memories of my own prom...which I hated. All I will say is, I hated my dress, I hated my date, and to make matters worse (get ready to say OMG) my parents had to drive my date and I to the my prom. Pathetic I know. Luckly I can look back at that awuful night and laugh.

Yikes - what an unappealing episode. And I also cannot believe Kevin went home. That was totally undeserved. It should have been Ricky or Christian.

casey - I'm with you. I really think Ricky's dress should not only have landed him in the bottom 2, he should have been sent home. And lizzybelle - I totally agree. I'm tired of seeing Ricky cry almost every week.

I think that Sweet P should have won, Her dress was gorgeous! To me it looked like Victorya had picked up a bedazzler at Mood. The color of her dress was pretty, but the style just wasn't there. i yelled at the TV when she won.

I completely agree, it should have been Ricky to go home. He should have gone home LONG TIME ago. I really liked Kevin, he was a good guy and he's made decent clothes.

Am I the only person who wasn't totally sold on Sweet P's dress? I did think it was one of the best dresses--but that fabric was unforgiving.
It showed every bump and ridge underneath it. It was mostly from the ribs of the model wearing it...but I still found that aspect unattractive. So, the dress itself I liked...HOW the dress looked on? Not as much a fan.
But that's just me. And as I said, it was still one of the top dresses of the night.

Going by your theory that the designer whose life is showcased would be the next to be eliminated, I assumed it would be Ricky. Does the man have stock in Kleenix?! After looking at his dress I was pretty positive that Ricky was going home. Imagine my surprise when one of my favorites, Kevin, was sent home instead.
Wow!
I appreciated his gracious exit, and how smart was he in promoting himself before leaving. Good for him. I personally thought he should have won the previous Hershey Candy challenge.
I liked the color of Christian's dress but it was a "hot mess", especially in the back, and if I had to chose between he and Kevin going home, bye Christian.
I have to say Tim Gunn is my favorite personality on the show. All of his observations and comments to the designers have been spot on. I loved that he didn't allow Christian to wallow and cop out of the challenge.
If another designer has to leave, ala Jack, I hope they correct their wrong and bring back Kevin.

Christian's model was a pain, right, but he let her take over and design the dress (at least give all the requirements). He could have done a really pretty dress for her, but I think he was thrown as much by her non-model size as her over-the-top personality.
Victorya's dress was unusual, but could not have been comfortable to wear! It bound her breasts, pulled her shoulders forward, and if she tried to dance in it it would have blown up around her waist!
I loved Sweet P's dress, but I agree that the fabric was unforgiving. It would have looked filthy after about 20 minutes at the prom. I would have picked Chris's dress.

Hi Ellen. None of these girls were "model" size. I agree, Christian was thrown by the strength of Maddie's character and will. He had no problem critiquing the other designers and offering an opinion for them to scale back or edit, he should have done the same with himself. I actually liked the front top part of the dress (along with color), but the back was awful. She was plus size with booty and he should have bought more material and constructed a more A line design for the shirt than hoop. It only made her hips look bigger and the outfit less pulled together.
Man! I've watched too many of these episodes.

I also think one of Christian's hang-ups was that he knows you get chastised and points taken away if you don't listen to your model. How many times have we heard the judges say not to design for yourself, but for the client? I think there's a middle ground there that is accepted by the judges, but I think Christian was thrown by not knowing when to listen to his very nasty model and when to assert his talents.
As for the color...brown has been the color this past year for bridesmaids' dresses, and perhaps Maddie liked that look. Brown can be made to look gorgeous if done right. She definitely had no taste, but he was right to go with the color she wanted, but should have toned down the rest of it.

Chris should have won, but since it came down to only 2 favorites, I thought Sweet P should have taken the crown (pun INTENDED!)
Brown is a beautiful color - whether its "in style" or not - its an earth tone and can compliment any skin tone. Gold and brown are a winning combination. However, mixing it with black lace? No. Never. Christian did listen to his "model", but she was a pain in the ass. She's the reason I don't go shopping on weekends. Teenagers: best birth control EVER!

I thought the color was fine too. It looked more like melted copper. Could just be my TV set.

*lol* Yep! But they're worth it. *said wistfully as I have a preteen*
