Episode Recap: "In Which Sam Gets Taken for a Ride"
If there's one thing I can say about this show, it's that they get some fantastic guest stars. Christopher from Gilmore Girls and, my personal fave, Darlene Connor. With a gun. In the convenience store.
But I'll get to that. My first priority is to cover the sex that went on and the sex that didn't. Cooper and Violet — did anyone think that was really going to happen? I'll be honest and say I thought it was going to be Violet who chickened out, but I like how it worked out. I thought Cooper was going to confess his love for her right there in his Skivvies! The dynamic between these two is more intriguing to me than Pete and Addison. There is a lot going on there and I hope it continues to unfold in these awkward ways.
Pete and Addison — I was glad that didn't happen. It was way too soon for them to take it to that level. Early in the show, I wondered where their relationship would go if they did the deed at this point. I couldn't figure it out, but I knew it didn't make me happy. After that emotional birth they went through with the widow, who could think about sex anyway? I felt bad for the widow and it was great of Addison to step up and comfort her, but did she really need to get into the birthing pool with her? With all the amniotic fluid, blood and fecal matter? And then she walked around with the baby in her soaking wet poopy pants! What in the hell got into her? Not Pete, that's for sure. He bailed on her — I didn't see that coming. He's obviously more damaged than I thought. Maybe it will be a long, hard road for those two after all.
Sam and Naomi had some "I almost lost you" sex. That was hot! There is still some major chemistry between those two. Obviously, being held at gunpoint by a pregnant Sara Gilbert makes you frisky. I thought the whole hostage situation was a bit flimsy though. Sara and the convenience-store clerk/babydaddy didn't look like two broke people to me. There wasn't enough detail for me to believe she needed money badly enough to rob his store because he left her. I sensed her despair over being abandoned, but his willingness to help the baby was so evident I can't believe that was the first time he told her that. I love to overanalyze, as you can tell.
Side note: Someone get Sara Gilbert a sitcom/drama of her own. I mean other than The Big Bang Theory. She's been in the background of shows for too long (ahem, ER). Sara Gilbert is a great actress.
The woman with the four boys definitely has her hands full, but they wrapped that storyline up way too quickly. Do they honestly expect me to believe her immature husband miraculously grew up because his wife said so? He'll be burping and playing Xbox in no time. That subplot really fell flat.
All in all it was a good episode, lots of personal drama. I hope we haven't seen the last of the cop who asked Addison out — David Sutcliffe is supercute and one of the reasons I loved Gilmore Girls so much. I can't believe she said no! What a fool!
I'll end this recap with one very important question: What else do you think is in the Dell vault? Ah, possibilities! See you next week.

I volunteer to be in the Dellvault. Even though I know that Dell is too old for Nai I do think his crush is really cute.
I really enjoyed this episode. For most of it, I was really pissed when it was commercial time because it was so good. I love all these characters and how they interact.
Darlene was great! I agree re: the 4th boy storyline although my Aunt probably thought put it back a few times. She tried 5 times til she got a girl. So, I can see saying that the first time but then it did get a little stale that she was being an idiot about it.
I really think I like this show better than Grey's. I really don't like most of the characters on Grey's. So, even though I like the writing, I don't look forward to it anymore like I do with PP.

I have 6 sons and not once was I disappointed in not having a girl. People ask me if I kept trying to have a girl and I tell them that is a terrible reason to have a baby. Can you tell that I didn't like this particular storyline?

I loved this episode. I was laughing out loud at how proud Dell was the entire time of his baby boy that he "caught." While it was a little overdramatic at times, the dynamic between Violet and Cooper was so sweet and heartfelt. And David Sutcliffe in an LAPD shirt? It was like you had to look away. By far, however, I was most impressed by the actress playing the widow. I never expected to see her get that physically upset while delivering and to hyperventilate. I thought she gave a beautiful performance.

I really enjoyed this episode. Overall I really like this show and I hope it lasts. However, I was really disappointed with the widow story line. The acting was great, but it was to much like the Dr. Bailey giving birth story on Grey's. Yes, technically the widow story was slightly different because the husband had died, and Bailey's husband only had serious injuries. But everything else, even down to the comforting hug/straddle that gave the woman the strength to give birth without the husband, was the same.
And one last nitpick, I thought the purpose of Pete being there was to keep the mom from panicking? He looked just a scared as the mom and did absolutely nothing to calm her.
Those are my only grips. Overall, great episode.

How can you go on and on about the guest stars and not even mention the mini Juding Amy reunion?!

What Judging Amy reunion? If you're referring to the mother with the 4 boys, thats not the woman who played Donna on Judging Amy. Otherwise, I must have missed it!

The mother of 4 was Rusty Schwimmer, and she was on Judging Amy, but only for 1 episode. She was a regular on The Guardian though. She is one of my favorites. I most recently saw her on Heroes, but after looking at her page on imdb, it appears she was in at least one episode of several series.
I really enjoy this show, and was sooooo upset to find out it wasn't on last week. I enjoy country music, it is what I listen to the most, but I really didn't want to watch the CMA's instead of Private Practice.
I think my favorite person on there is Cooper, although Dell is a close second. I love Tim Daly (is it just me, or does he seem to get better looking the older he gets?), and while Pete is interesting, he hasn't gotten into my heart like Cooper and Dell.

Totally agree about the guest stars, especially this week...
Sara Gilbert - great as always
Sprague Grayden (widow) - loved her on Jericho and she was fantastic here
Elden Henson (gunshot victim)- former Mighty Duck all grown up
David Sutcliffe (LAPD) - good chemistry with Addison
Rusty Schwimmer (Mom of 5 boys) - last saw her on Heroes
They have a knack of getting some strong character actors to appear in these small, but pivotal roles. Interesting role-reversal about who Cooper/Violet and Pete/Addison wound up with at the end of the day. All in all, a pretty strong episode.

I was glad that Dell didn't walk in on Naomi and Sam...talk about heart-breaking!
Thanks for all the reminders about the guests. I couldn't remember what show the police officer was on. It finally hit me right when I woke up this morning. And I still couldn't place the widow until I just read it here.
Guess Pete knows he won't have that opportunity with Addison any time soon.

I thought this was a really good episode. I agree the mom with the boys did get a bit old with the 'I want a girl' thing, but way to go Dell for telling the dad to grow up! The widow made me cry when she was all upset in the tub, I thought it was odd that Pete spaced out but what he told Violet made it abit clearer. So if he had a horrible relationship with his wife and she was so awful, why would he have kids with her? I am very confused with what we have been told about his dead wife. God Taye Diggs is hot! Sara Gilbert.. they so should have named her character Darlene! She is such a good actress. Poor Addison, it was good how it worked out in the end though, with the 4 of them pouring out their troubles to each other. Can't wait til next week!!

This show has come a long way since the pilot episode. This episode was very good and I honestly believe they are very close to being an excellent show. Drop some of the over-the-top stuff and get to more of what matters and I will be sold!

I'm surprised none of the Judging Amy fans have mentioned the similarities between the widow's birth experience last night and Donna's on Amy. Donna had her baby at the Gray's home in an inflatable tub, had no family to be with her so Maxine got into the tub with her and held her/coached her through the birth just like Addison did with the widow.

two things...one, when the widow finally broke down and let herself grieve over her dead husband, my heart broke...that was some powerful tv right there.

I think Pete really loved his wife. But he also hated her too. She was a very controlling person. I can see how they would want to have a baby. Maybe thinking it would make things better for them.
I really liked this episode. I think in the end the right two people ended up having sex. Dell is adorable. haha
