All's Well Between Oscar and Snubbed Whoopi

Four-time Oscar host Whoopi Goldberg teared up on Monday's The View after the ladies brought up her exclusion from what looked like a tribute montage to past hosts on Sunday's telecast. In turn, Gil Cates, who produced the show, called Whoopi to apologize. "That piece of film was made to honor 80 years of Oscar's most memorable moments," he told TV Guide. Because of the show's crash production schedule after the end of the WGA strike, Cates saw the montage only days before it aired. "I never realized that Whoopi wasn't in it — and she hosted two times for me! And Steve Martin's not in it, I now realize. I feel badly for him, too. It was just totally an oversight." Not that he's calling Martin with his mea culpa. "No, Steve's not that kind of guy."

Cates is embarrassed "that anyone would think there was any reason that Whoopi wasn't included, except by accident. We did use a very major piece of her in the piece on [winning] supporting actors. She thanked me for calling, and told me how much she loved the Oscars. She's cool with it." Goldberg was cool on Wednesday's View as well, relating Cates' call to the audience. "I know him as a great gentleman," she said, "so we moved on from that."

Was Cates sorry enough to ask Whoopi to host next year or at least to present some major award? "They haven't asked me to [produce] it next year, so it would be presumptuous of me to do that," he answers. — Ileane Rudolph

I'm with Cates. I saw the montage and didn't realize Whoopi wasn't in it either or Steve Martin for that matter. But then too, it's not like I keep up with who hosted the Oscars.

Whoopi, get over yourself! The tribute montage wasn't about past hosts.

I didn't think it was about past hosts, either. Although I would have LOVED to have seen her "African Queen" send up of Elizabeth again!

I don't remember seeing Ellen, but then again I really wasn't paying attention to the hosts, just the clips. But she and Steve Martin weren't the only ones - here's a complete list of Oscar hosts from Wikipedia -

Way to overreact, Whoopi. Should every host in history then get a short clip? It was a montage, it's not like they omitted a dead person (oh wait, they did- ie. Brad Renfro).

y'know what? That Whoopi has real class. And she's a darn good host too, I hope she does another Academy Awards show soon. I am a big Jon Stewart fan, but he seemed a little off on Sunday. Give him a couple years' rest, and book Whoopi for next year. I'm sure her omission from the reel was just as Mr. Cates said, an innocent oversight.

Ellen was in it. I saw the View that day and Whoopi was fine. It was the other gals who kept pointing it out and made her emotional about it. It's not her fault. She'll get over it. But if she hosted 4 years and she wasn't in it, then she did not create any memories for the producer.

If i am to understand it correctly, the academy first honors those who are members, secondly winners and nominees, and then the remaining slots are filled with other people who died this year. The statement i read said there were no spots available in the 3rd group this year. It makes sense if it is true.

I think Whoppi handled herself with class, and it's not wrong for her to feel a bit left out, but I too think it was just an oversight. I think she's really funny though, and I would like to see her host it again.
I also think Jon Stewart did a wonderful job, and what I liked about him was that he never said anything to make anyone cringe, he was just plain funny. I hate when they say bad things that are so controversial, even in a joke, and make people cringe. I think he did fine.
