Oscars Boss: Lack of Titanic Films Sank Our Ratings

Why was there such a lack of interest in this year's Academy Awards, leading the kudoscast to deliver its smallest audience on record? It's the movies, stupid, says producer Gil Cates, pointing out that in recent years, ratings for the show have matched the popularity of the nominated films. "I [produced] the show the year Titanic made a billion dollars and [this year's best-picture nominees] together probably didn't reach $300 million," he says. "Only Juno did really well. That's the major reason."

Cates, who was a main negotiator for the successful Directors Guild contract, also blames the writers' strike. "Less people were watching the networks and less people were watching the promos," he says, pointing out that the Grammys audience similarly shrank more than 20 percent.

There is some good ratings news to be had, however: Cates says that those who bothered to tune in for the Feb. 24 gala stayed tuned in for the entire show. — Ileane Rudolph

If the best sell line one can come up with for a film is "it's really high quality," that film is pretty much guaranteed to be a box office midget. The overwhelming majority of movies nominated for Oscars this year sounded like homework, not entertainment. It's no wonder next to no one paid money to see them (or cared if they won Oscars).

Well, I don't buy that at all as a reason for the decline. It might be one small reason. I, and other people I've talked to feel that in this depression like age, to see these stars strutting around in expensive jewelry and clothes and knowing they are all millionaires makes me sick. The whole idea of awards shows is really sick. They preen around patting themselves on the back on what a good job he/she did. And to say that one actor didn't do as well as another actor is poppycock since it is all subjective and political.

The only awards show I enjoyed was the GG because they didn't have all that, just the winners announced, end of story. But to have to listen to all those wannabee hosts, critique what people are wearing, trying to come up with clever lines is ridiculous. It takes millions and millions of dollars to put on these shows, what for? For a congratulatory pat on the back. I think they should just do away with these shows entirely and give all the money they save to charity and people who really need it. Lastly, the content of the show was sorely lacking. It was completely boring including Jon Stewart who is a favorite of mine. I really feel the spirit of the awards is declining and I'm very glad of it.
