February 8, 2007: Scary Clowns and Shaky Ground

The last few minutes of this episode, even though we knew they were coming, were definitely the highlight of the night. They were darkly lit so we couldn’t see much, and they left us hanging, but they were good.

And thankfully, they put a stop to Taylor’s endless whining. Tonight she finally crossed the line from endearingly neurotic to just plain annoying. Things were good between her and Ryan, so why couldn’t she just be happy? Why did she have to pressure Ryan to say something he may not have been ready to say, and stoop to trying to get him drunk in order to get him to say it? She pushes way too hard and doesn’t let things happen naturally. When he did finally tell her that he loved her, it seemed natural. But of course, she was too drunk to know for sure that it happened, so she needed him to say it again. Oh, and she mentioned going to Berkeley together, adding even more stress to the situation. But I shouldn’t complain, because if it wasn’t for her heavy-handed approach, Ryan wouldn’t have resorted to a backup birthday gift of a dictionary. And that led to the funniest line of the night when he explained, “The guy said it, uh, had more words than others.”

I wonder if that dictionary had a listing for “clown porn,” because before this episode, I never heard those two words used together. At least I’m not alone, since Julie also admitted to never hearing of these circus-inspired fantasies. Clowns are scary enough, but naked clowns? Those materials that Kaitlin planted in Frank’s “dirty convict bag” were seriously creepy. But bad Kaitlin makes for good TV, and she was cracking me up when giving Frank a hard time, questioning him about prison showers and such. He took it well, though she did go a little too far when she started putting up flyers of his mug shot — flyers that mentioned the clown porn, no less. But I was equally impressed by the dramatic turn in Kaitlin, when she quickly went from bratty to emotional while explaining to Julie her fears about being abandoned by another father figure, as well not having enough time for her and Julie to bond on their own as a family of two.

Kirsten was also dealing with some fears regarding her expanding family, only hers involved a fear of the next-generation Newpsies, who were almost as scary as clowns. This wasn’t your typical older mom feeling insecure around younger moms situation, this was a sane woman trying to not be recruited by Holly and her pregnancy-weight-fearing “hos” to join their “six-pack pact.” Kirsten was correct in her assessment of this generation of Newpsies being worse than Julie and the rest of her season-one pals. Run, Kirsten — run far, far away from this crew, even if it means moving to the East Coast. Oh, and stay away from Jason’s self-absorbed young wife, too.

As for Kirsten’s first offspring, Seth, well, there’s not much to say. For most of the season, he and Summer have been tied up with various animal subplots that haven’t really gone anywhere. There were bunnies, otters and groundhogs, and now Seth was stuck filming dolphin and shark rafts in his pool for most of the episode. There was some mention of him being directionless and lost, but mostly I found myself losing interest in his story line.

But when those rafts started trembling in the pool, and the signs, lights and buildings came crashing down — the earthquake had me on the edge of my seat! Everyone was in possible danger, and then they faded to black. I’m truly looking forward to next week... even though I realize that that means we’re sadly down to the final two weeks of life in The O.C.

Sadly enough, I caught some crazy HBO show once that had Clown Porn and since I had only been half watching and talking on the phone, when I looked up and saw some sort of orgy, I almost passed out. Clowns are one of my biggest fears and tonight I had to turn away when Julie found the stuff in Frank's bag! I have to say I like Summer and how much her character has mellowed, especially how she's trying to help Ryan out. She's been around him long enough to know he needs a push sometimes, and since Seth manages to tell him all of the stupid things to do, it's good to have Summer as a voice of reason. My bet is that Kirsten will lose the baby and they won't have to worry about raising it in that pit called Newport. Seriously, when did it become cool to call your friends bitches and actually think a pregnant woman was fat? Can't stand Holly and her little posse. I'm excited to see what happens next week, but I agree-that means only 2 more weeks left. That sucks.

Finally someone who shares the same disgust 4 Taylor as I do. She never will be able to make me forget Marissa Cooper. Ryan should get toghether with Theresa instead but that is not gonna happen.

I love The O.C., but I feel that they are rushing the relationship between Taylor and Ryan. We had 3 years of Ryan and Marissa on-again, off-again relationship, and now we have a couple of months and Ryan is telling Taylor - he loves her. It feels very rushed and forced. But, since they only have 2 more weeks - I guess this is what we get. I will miss this show....... :(

I think tonights episode was great! When Ryan told Taylor that he loved her the first time, it gave me chills. He had never even told Marissa he loved her. I think he needed a push because he is not the kind of guy who shows his emotions. This shows growth in his character!I also think that Taylor is perfect for him. I really do! I think the best part last night was Summer hinting to Ryan to tell Taylor he loved her.. that was classic Summer. However i do love the way her character has grown. What is happening to my Seth? I didn't think he needed a direction until the writers forced it down our throat that he didn't have one.?? I am confused about that storyline. As for Kirsten and Sandy, omg, i would run for the hills if I lived in a town like that. Are there really people like that out there? That really scares me! I am going to miss this show so much, it is finally GREAT again!!!

I love Ryan and Taylor. Taylor brings out what I think is the "real" Ryan. A guy with Humor and playfulness. The entire three years of Ryan and Marissa's relationship was all about Marissa drama. It's why I tuned out.

And I only tuned in on accident at the start of this season, but thanfully I did. Taylor's quirkiness has been a joy to watch. She's not a typical damsel in distress. It's a little more then refreshing. If I had to choose between Taylor being annoying and Marissa being "Woe is me"

Taylor, hands down

I agree that the last few minutes were the best. I had gotten bored with the episode and had forgotten that the quake was coming. I hate that there are only two episodes left, but lets hope they go out on a high note.

I can't wait to see the fallout from the ending. I have watched since the beginning and I can't believe it's ending. But what an ending!

(Lots of "ending", sorry.)

I loved this episode as much as the rest of this season. I agree that Seth is not as interesting as he used to be. I do love Ryan & Taylor. They're great together, although I do feel their relationship is rushed. I am so happy Soapnet bought it though for syndication. I can't wait for the last 2, yet also don't want it to end.

Clown porn isn't particularly surprising, but that doesn't make it any less creepy. There is a band called Bozo Porno Circus, after all. I'm glad Julie is taking it slow with Franky-boy after the impassioned plea from Kaitlin. I still miss Bullitt:(

As for Kaitlin, I'm truly sorry we won't get to see more of her; she's the most level-headed Cooper there is. Must have been all those years in boarding school.

Anyone throwing any OC Finale parties? We should all gather in front of the TV clutching our Captain Oats and Princess Sparkles ponies and bid The OC a proper farewell.

First of all, a reminder to jillie79, yes, Ryan did tell Marissa he loved her--at Oliver's New Year's Eve party. He said, "I love you" and she responded "Thank you," just as he did when she told him earlier in the episode. You probably don't remember because of the evil that was Oliver.

I'm really sad that "American Idol" is going to keep us from getting a retrospective of some kind prior to the finale, but I'm also happy that "Idol" will be its lead-in.

And if you want to share your favorite "O.C." moments, feel free to check out http://media.herald-dispatch.com/blog/tuned.

I totally forgot about that agh24. I hated that Oliver storyline sooo much. I try to block it out!!

I still think after everythink Ryan and Marissa, that Taylor is better for him.

I absolutely loved it! I have also been a fan since the first episode and have grown to love these characters. When the Cohens left and Ryan entered that house, the tears flowed...especially we got to see Ryan's first glimpse of Marissa. Squish Squish.
