« Nip/Tuck
November 21, 2006: Diana Lubey
There are two types of Nip/Tuck dream sequences. The first is the kind used on most TV shows — when a character is asleep and is dreaming (or having a nightmare), and we get to watch what they're dreaming about. The second is the kind we've been seeing more and more on this show, and it usually involves Christian or Sean. They either have a daydream or a hallucination — they're just envisioning someone in the room and that certain someone talks to them and sometimes Christian or Sean talk back. This happens to Sean quite often because of Escobar (which confuses him when it's the real thing). Tonight, it was Christian who had an ongoing daydream involving a collection of his former loves and lusts (mostly lusts, of course). Not surprising since Christian seems to finally be in love and is moving in with his new fiancée, Michelle, so he is literally saying goodbye to his infamous bedroom and figuratively saying goodbye to the women he's bedded in the room. I was impressed that they were able to include Kimber, the blind Natasha Charles (Rebecca Gayheart) and Abby Mays (Rebecca Metz) equipped with her brown paper bag. But how many of you were hoping to see more of them? I wanted to see Ava. I wanted to see Gina. I wanted to see Kit. And these are just a few. But I accepted the scenes, especially the final one, since there was a bedroom filled to the rim with women, so I got the gist of it. Side note for those of you who also watch Grey’s Anatomy — Rebecca Gayheart is married in real life to Eric Dane (McSteamy, who happens to be a plastic surgeon — nice coincidence).
We were treated to a plethora of famous guest stars tonight. The most noteworthy one was the beautiful and Oscar-nominated Catherine Deneuve as Diana Lubey, the woman who asked McNamara/Troy to implant her husband Victor's ashes inside her saline breast implants so she could keep him close inside her. After Sean performed the surgery on Diana within the first half hour, I was trying to figure out how they could take this story line further with the half hour remaining. Enter Brenda Vaccaro! I loved that she was Victor's actual wife, and Diana was just the mistress who stole the ashes and pretended to be the wife. I must add that, like Catherine, the fabulous Brenda is also an Oscar-nominated actress, but if you're like me, you associate her with two things: her husky voice and her Playtex tampon commercials from the '80s.
Back to Catherine as Diana — I thought it was a classy touch for her to kiss Sean at the end like that. He sure needed that after Julia skipped town with the kids last week. Great line of Sean's: "The one woman who would've carried my ashes inside her is gone." It was good to not see him be too miserable tonight — sneaking Victor's real ashes to Diana and even apologizing and hugging Michelle at the end. In a typically clever Nip/Tuck way, right after Sean and Michelle hugged, the camera pulled out to reveal the blood all over the operating light. Earlier, what a lovely sight it was for Michelle to walk in (after hearing an eerie version of "Que Sera Sera" being played in the operating room) to see James (Jacqueline Bisset) removing a man's organ. That James can tear your heart out. Literally. I liked when Michelle slapped her and threatened to reveal her secret. But then — ouch — James came to Christian with a severely bruised and black eye. Hmmm. I don't think I want to know how she got that, but I agree with those of you who commented that she had it done to her on purpose. Once again — ouch.
Fresh from his first runner-up status on Dancing with the Stars, Mario Lopez returned as Dr. Mike, and it did not surprise me that he wanted to buy Christian's pad. Since he seems to idolize Christian, I'd love Mike to be the next character who pulls an Alex Forrest and gets obsessed with Christian.
Speaking of Christian, let's talk about that scene between him and Sean when Sean confronted Christian and told him that he knew about his... feelings about him. Hilarious. The look on Christian's face was priceless. Especially when Sean told him he started seeing the same therapist. You knew Christian was going to rip Faith Wolper a new one! His whole "I'm not gay" speech to Sean was classic, but my favorite part was, of course, the eyebrows line: "Is it my eyebrows? If I don't wax, I get this unibrow thing, and it gets ugly. Just because I groom 'em doesn't mean I've gone Brokeback." Many of you know I've been commenting about Julian McMahon's eyebrows forever, so obviously I screamed, "Shut up!" when Christian said that. Awesome scene when Christian and Sean agreed that they love each other, just not in that way.
Can we talk about how terrific an actress Brooke Shields is turning out to be? She just gets better with age. That scene when Christian confronted Faith about her breaking the doctor/patient confidentiality rules and then he brought in Sean to add to the ambush was pure acting magic. Brooke's face showed just how mortified Faith was. How about her reactions when Sean was telling Faith that Christian had a new girlfriend? Memo to the Emmy people considering nominations for guest actress in a drama: by hook or by crook, give one to Brooke!

I felt good about this episode, because they seem to come full circle with some of the past storylines. Instead of starting another story, they addressed Sean's pain, Christian's past visit with Faith, and the on-going story with James. I like the way he moved on with Michelle by selling his home. It was a nice change, rather than have Christian stay and continue his old ways.

If only one could look as fabulous as Ms. Catherine Deneuve at 63!

Is this it for the Brooke Shields storyline? I felt it was kind of let down to end like that. The same thing with Monica-she conviently got run over by a bus. I didn't miss Julia-is it wrong to say that? Of all the women Christian has slept with-I agree Gina should have been in the dream sequence. All in all, I enjoyed this one. I was trying to figure out what the twist with Catherine Deenuve would be as well.

I really liked this ep. Its nice to see a "maturing" Christian..dont kno how long he & Michelle are gonna last but I like seein them 2gethr. I wonder how Christian is going to find out about her kidney stealing.
Another Matt-less ep But I do wanna know whats gonna happen to him and Kimber..and how she's gonna react when she finds out Christian is engaged.
I dont mind Julia..its just hard to watch when her and sean are togethr.
Loved when sean was talkin to christian about his feelings towards him haha. The eyebrow comment was great! Glad they finally kno what a psycho Faith is lol!!!
Too bad Sean cant stay happy for more than two seconds..wife leaves w/ the kids & now he's gonna become an alcoholic

The storyline of two women fighting over a man's ashes seems familiar to me, although I didn't see it coming until after the real wife showed up. Anyway, does anyone remember a show where this happened? Probably a legal show? This is bugging me. Yeah, Gina definitely should've been in the dream sequence, but the whole thing was nicely done. I thought there would have been a LOT more women shown in that room though. I only recognized Flabby Abby, Kimber, and Rebecca's character.

I really enjoyed this episode, one of the best in a very long time. Inspired.
No Julia being weird about correcting her son's disability, no Matt being weird about some female's manipulation. No out of character weird affairs.
Just Sean and Christian truly being themselves. Christian was great telling Sean, go ahead with the bad-idea surgery if he needs it but he did need to realize that Michelle required certain respect, setting up the get help scenario. The Brooke Shields thing added some hilarity to it all. Seeing her plan to break up Christian and Michelle failed made her desperate.
Sean coming around was nice.
A surprising surgery story. Thought it was weird enough that she would want the ashes inside her, but to end up being the mistress who really oved him was good.

Dave, you totally missed the whole James/Black Eye thing. She wasn't roughed up by the Vietnamese thugs, she had that done to her. Remember she'd asked Michelle to let her use the office afterhours to do her 'business'. Michelle told her no, so then James had herself beaten up and went back to the office to sweet talk Christian into doing the reconstruction for her. Remember, the patients in recovery stay at the offices. So she was already there and could let in her whore and the victim to do their business. I wish I could take create for realizing it, but my wife pointed it out to me.

Farscape29 you didn't find it weird that they would leave surgical recovery patients unattended? Wouldn't the night nurse have seen them sneaking in some random guy to the surgical room, blasting music, anesthetizing him and cutting out his kidney? Or did they render the night nurse unconscious, too?

i really love this episode. but just like the rest of you i was wondering the same thing......where was gina. but i did enjoy seeing flabby abby and blind natasha. and i knew rebecca gayheart is married to eric dane from greys.....i found that out on entertainment tonight . anyway i did love catherine deneuve and brenda vaccaro. i hope we get to see more of them. peopel are so weird....there are other ways to keep a loved ones ashes close to you. but having them inserted in implants are just plain weird.
dave i also think it will be great to have sean, pulling an alex forrest on sean. and i did love the eyebrow comment. brooke sheilds was great. i want to see her really do something to christian.
farscape29 i also figured out that james did that to herself. james is so conveing....that she had somebody do that to herself on purpose.
i love this show. one of the best of the shows on tv.

I totally agree that James had someone punch the crap out of her so that she could be on the premises for a little after-hours surgery. As for a night nurse, of course there should be one, but when has that ever stopped the writers of this show
I hope that Michelle kicks her ass out again...but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of James.
Liked the ep - it was nice to have things mostly normal for at least one episode.
Would love to see more of Mario Lopez - especially in the shower again

I really enjoyed this episode...nice, light, and comical.
May I just say that I think Christian and Michelle seem so authentic as a couple. Even though they haven't been in any steamy sex scenes together I love the chemistry. Good job Julian and Sanaa!
Dylan Walsh is amazing. 'Nuff said. The interaction between the two at the end was hilarious. There scenes together are always great.
I was surprised Quentin Costa wasn't lined up in the bedroom with the rest of the women. Haha that would have been cruel of the writers. But funny.
Catherine Devinue is still stunning and amazing. Just like Jacqueline Bisset. Even though James is a devious little creature I can't help but like her. There is something about Ms. Bisset, so is always so classy and regal.
Great episode.

Finally got around to watching this: when Christian said goodbye, the room should have been overflowing with women, this looked too finite.
As for Brenda Vaccaro, you're right about her claims to fame, but for me one of her great roles will always be the first season guest role on Friends as Joey's mom. She was hilarious and bittersweet, all within five minutes.
