Episode Recap: “The Mortal Cure”

What we know:
• As vampires age their scent becomes more potent with decay.
• There are some vamps even Josef won’t mess with.
• Coraline is a vamp again.
• The Reign of Terror was really a vamp genocide and the guillotine was the weapon of choice since only decapitation and burning could kill vamps.
• There is something called “the compound” which masks the traits of vampirism temporarily.

When Lance, a vampire since Medieval times, shows up at Mick’s place and asks for help finding Coraline I never imagined Lance would turn out to be her brother. I also never imagined Coraline would be of royal blood and a direct descent of King Louis XVI. I always love it when shows try to incorporate real world history into their timelines so I enjoyed this new element. And not only is Coraline of royal blood, but she brought Mick into that bloodline without the permission or consent of her brothers. Oh, and now we know why Coraline didn’t die when Mick set her on fire all those years ago. She, like her brother, can regenerate — they don’t have to worry about fire. They probably still worry about having their heads separated from their bodies.

Speaking of detached heads, Beth is still reeling and in her own private little world. A world where she’s still mad at Mick. But the journalist in her can’t rest, even when she’s hurting. A mysterious entry in Josh’s planner leads Beth to what appears to be a date with a woman named Celeste. Now, was I the only one who knew that Josh could not possibly be stepping out on Beth? God rest him, but he was a predictable and loyal guy. I can’t really imagine him having any earth-shattering secrets. And did Beth even have any right to be upset? She kissed Mick behind Josh’s back (I consider that cheating) and at best her feelings towards him were ambivalent at times. Even though she told him she loved him the day he died I think she said it as more of a reflex than an actual proclamation of her feelings. I was pleased when she finally went to see Mick though.

Before I get to the very, very interesting end of the episode I want to take a step back and examine this “cure” and that all starts with Coraline. Mick bribes the security guard at the hospital for a closer look of the tape on the night Coraline disappeared. Mick discovers Cynthia Davis, one of Coraline’s oldest friends, is the one who helped her escape. Mick enlists the help of Logan to track Cynthia down and we learn she’s been taking trips to France regularly to import an agricultural product and she’s got a degree in biochemistry. Mick goes to the warehouse where Cynthia’s agricultural product is being delivered and discovers it’s a lab where they’ve been performing experiments. Coraline has been testing on rogue vampires and it’s been killing them; she’s been looking for a way to make “the compound” a permanent solution to her vampire problem.

Coraline gives Mick the cure and asks him to run away with her. She needs to get out of town and away from Lance. But as they’re leaving Lance and his henchman track them down. Mick thinks it’s a double cross and that Coraline’s given him the cure to kill him but she ultimately sacrifices herself for him. Lance paralyzes her and takes her away. We’re not sure where they’re going but it’s clear that Coraline’s in a lot of trouble and she's scared. Mick, feeling the pain of getting his ass kicked and sleeping on the couch, goes to Josh’s funeral looking like a hot mess. Beth guesses that he’s human and although she’s wearing Josh’s ring we can still see how much she's drawn to Mick, maybe even more so now.

In a way I think this episode was a good season “finale.” It opens up a whole new world for these two to explore whenever we get to see new episodes. There are so many questions to answer. How long will this “cure” last? Will Mick try to make a move on Beth while he’s human? Will they explore their feelings? His day-to-day life will also change. Will Mick have to take on different kinds of cases now that he can’t rely on his vamp senses? Will there be any sort of backlash from his vamp friends? Will his body start aging and how will he deal with feeling pain? Mick will probably do everything in his power to make the cure permanent. How fast do you think he’ll use his blood to isolate the compound and manufacture more of the cure? Do you think Coraline and her kin are out of the picture for good?

Let me know your thoughts. What do you want to see the next new episode tackle? And please feel free to pose your own questions for the group. Until we get a fresh episode check out our Online Video Guide for more on Moonlight.

Every week, it feels like our Moonlight hour (or 44 mins) goes by too fast. I especially felt that this week.

Even tho I have seen The Mortal Cure more than once, I am still trying to process everything the writers gave us. It was bursting with so much drama.

Mick got a rest this week.... Josef returned and took over shirtless duty! In trademark Josef fashion, he tried to tempt Mick into getting a freshie massage. He knows that Mick is stressed. What a thoughtful friend *wink*

Coraline turned Mick without permission and then stole the "cure" for him ~ drawing the family wrath. Lance is so invincible, but whoever sent him is even more powerful. Imagine that! She surrendered to this scary fate in exchange for Lance not killing Mick.

Since Mick is an old fashioned, chivalrous man, I wonder if he will try to save her in future episodes.

Beth was wearing the engagement ring at Josh's funeral. As I said on my blog, I hope it was simply a sign of respect & not to be worn afterward. Since Josh never gave it to her & it's his grandmother's ring, I could see her returning it to his family.

I hope we do not have to wait long for more Moonlight. That ending just made me want more! We have helped each other get through the weeks between episodes recently.... I know we will do that again no matter how long we have to wait for new episodes *smile*

OMG, OMG, OMG....I LOVED THIS EPISODE. I LOVE MICK/ALEX, OMG, OMG, OMG....I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY.....I WANTED THEM TO KISS AT THE END...OMG, OMG, OMG...I'M SPEACHLESS FOR ONCE.

I'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL I CAN ABSORB IT, THEN READ ALL YOUR COMMENTS AND POSITIVELY WATCH IT ABOUT 100 TIMES MORE.

OMG.....

I posted this un LLF and copied it here under MCure where it should be. Others have posted under LLF for TMC.

I feel as though I've lost my best friend, thankfully there will be re-runs and my DVR.

I wish CBS would make the verbal commitment about next season and be DONE WITH IT. Even if the strike would be over tomorrow there still wouldn't be time for anymore eps this season.

Oh, and I just want to say the scene when Mick has all that TAKE OUT food in front of him was hilarious; it just didn't last long enough

how funny was it to see mick w/the table full of food? i thought for sure that would be the first thing he'd do when he turned human, lol.

after finding out that lance was coraline's brother, we knew how she survived the fire. what gets me though is that she was staked and even if the stake burned, it couldn't have burned that fast for her to become unparalyzed. i mean, she was staked, mick grabbed beth and got the hell out of there and beth looks back to see coraline in the window?!?!? imo the wood shouldn't have burned that fast but hey, this is tv, right?!?!?

like you cobby, i was expecting mick and beth to kiss at the end but i guess that would've been inappropriate at josh's funeral. but i was sooooo hoping they would anyway.

all in all, i loved this ep! i really hope that WHEN the show gets picked up and WHEN they film new eps that mick is still "human" b/c i could definitely see mick pursuing beth. wouldn't that complicate things when he vamps back up? oh yes, and i would love to see how that turns out.

The Mortal Cure was great. From the start to the finish...
Josef shirtless was great. Then Coraline came back and was trying to find a cure. she found part of it to return to human for awhile. I never would of guess Lance was her brother and she had a bloodline dating way back.
Overall im happy Coraline gave part of the cure to Mick so he could return to human. Him getting his butt kick and hurting must of been hard for him but he had to know/knows now that being human he gives up all his vampire senes and all.
Beth wearing the ring I though maybe was also a sign of respect for Josh and his family. Now that Beth is human and Mick is human what will happen now. They woun't live happily ever after. Will something/ someone come between them who knows?
Now Beth was the same blood type as Coraline right? Is that why Coraline took her those 22 years ago? We have to wait and see.
I hope the strike ends soon so we can watch more moon light and if it doesn't I think the Mortal Cure was a great season 1 ender....

I, too, hope that when the show comes back on (and PLEASE don't let us wait too long!) he'll still be a mortal and able to get it on with Beth, because the only thing holding him back is that as a vamp he feels it would be wrong, right?? AND if he is a vamp at the time, how will he keep himself from biting her neck while in the throes of passion?? OMG just the thought gets me all excited. Are we hooked, or what??

Whatever happens, I say bring it on. I'll take what we get, just hope there will be more. I'm going into withdrawal already!

This ep made me like Coraline more - and when she said that Beth was starting to like her - wonder where the triangle will go in the future. Just please let's hope there is a future and that the future is SOON!

:( I am so sad that the show is over and we still have no idea IF or When it will be back on again. I understand the strike and all and why they do this and I do support them but GEES ENOUGH ALREADY..

OMG I loved:-x last night's show and it left so many questions when it went off. ONE is when will Mick turn back into a Vampire because you know it's only a temp situation for him being mortal again.

When he dose go back will be go and try to save Coraline? You could tell that she truly loved him the way she saved him for a sure sign and he did after all lover her with all his heart once BUT he also has some love for Beth OR could that just be that fact that he saved her once when she was a child.

Why was Beth wearing that ring? Josh never gave her that ring and really why was she so jealous she is the one that was running around with Mick every chance she could get she even tried in Black Crystie to get with him she fed him also and she has the hots for him bad.

What about Josepha now that Mick is no long a Vampire or that its temp will Mick go to him for help in finding Coraline and then he turns on him because he is not a vamp anymore or will he trust in him as his long time friend and help him go against the one he is so scared of.

I just hope and pray that this show will be on again for another season and I hope that this strike will soon be over with so us MICBETH fans can get our man back. Alex is a good looking man and a great actor and we are so lucky to have him here with us in the USA. I want to see more of him.

OH MY GOD, I WOULD ABSOLUTELY GO INTO A SEVERE DEPRESSION IF "MOONLIGHT" DOESN'T COME BACK, ESPECIALLY WITH HAVING THE SATISFACTION OF SEEING BETH AND MICK GET TOGETHER...I WANT SO BAD TO SEE THEM TOGETHER AND EXPRESS HOW THEY FEEL FOR EACH OTHER TO EACH OTHER!!!! PLEASE...PLEASE BRING IT BACK SOON!!!! WE LOVE MOONLIGHT!!!!

Another Thing that came to my mind last night as the show went off. Maybe Coraline took Beth because somewhere in that bloodline BETH is FAMILY...wouldn't that be a scream. Family and wouldn't that make Beth a possible vampire.

I just rewatched the episode for the third time and I'm crying like a baby, saying it's a TV show for crying out loud! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU, WOMAN????? But it can't be helped. The show obviously taps into some kind of deep need in me (and maybe all of us?) BUT THERE'S GOOD NEWS! I went to Kandye's link to Yahoo for the vamp pix, and there, right beside Mick being turned into a vamp is an article saying the Writers' Guild talks will probably begin again next week!!!!!!!!! Isn't that great? I sent the new Youtube video to Les Moonves, the one asking for a new season, although I'd like for this one to be finished first!

I'm sure Mick hasn't seen the last of Lance, what do you think? His 'welcome to the family' had an ominous ring to it.

Even though I didn't like Josh, I found myself hurting with Beth, as I've lost loved ones and know how it feels.

Wouldn't it be lovely if Beth/Mick get together while he's human?

There are so many directions the show can go now. Some thoughts:

Will Josef still be friends...if so will he help Mick out physically since Mick doesn't have powers anymore? We still haven't seen Josef vamp out.

Hope Coraline isn't completely out of the picture.

Of course you all know I love Lola and hope they bring her back.

Hope Mick has to woo Beth back a little bit....cause I have to tell you I haven't felt that lovin' tension feeling for more than a few episodes.

Hope the detective part of the show doesn't get mundane, i.e. no vampires to slew, just mortals to find, yuk, so lame.

Wonder if Mick will buy a bed?? but don't unplug the freezer.

Hope there's no pregnancies, that would be dumb. As a matter of fact, I don't want them bedding down for quite a awhile....some interrupted hot love scenes would suffice tho.

I don't know how the SERIES will eventually end but I want Mick as a vampire to live happily everafter in the vampire world with......not gonna tell ya who I'm rooting for.

Lastly, I just want to say I love the character of Mick St.John that Alex has created.

Got to go now to watch TMC AGAIN!!!

I loved this episode too! Did anyone else notice that "The Cleaner", who made a brief appearance, was played by a different actor? Wonder why. I really liked the first cleaner.

Coraline is a descendant of Louis XVI, so wouldn't that make Josef older if he were turned 500 yrs ago? Wouldn't the smell of Lance's decay remind Mick of Coraline's scent, since, as siblings, they'd be roughly the same age?

I'm hoping we see more of the Cleaner. She's obviously got a thing for Mick and they're pretty much in the same line of work: cleaning up after other people's messes. Like that vampire slob/gamer, too. Too funny that the private investigator pays another guy to do his cyber-sleuthing.

Hey all -

I definitely enjoyed this ep as much as everyone! I also am hoping for a committment from CBS resign the show.

Quick question about Coraline: in all the flashbacks she seemed a little crazy. The way she treated Mick (very selfishly), kidnapping Beth, and then stalking them. Now she's completely altruistic and willing to give up her life for Mick?? What happened in the last 50 years? Why has she changed so much? I think there must be some interesting history there and I really hope we get to see it!
