« How I Met Your Mother
February 19, 2007: Moist
Hello, Mother ship, cheers from my sick bed. Unfortunately, I’m down with the flu, so I hope you’ll forgive my brief posting tonight. But this episode was too good to let pass by without some effusion of praise.
Tonight we saw Barney in eyeliner, and it was good. We saw Lily be mean, and it was great. We saw Robin get jealous, and it was surprising. But most surprising of all, we saw Marshall throw a punch. And it was a doozy — it knocked ole Doogie flat. And that’s not even mentioning that killer shocker of a twist ending. I am totally floored, and the cold meds had nothing to do with it, I swear.
I was pleasantly surprised to have ended up laughing so much tonight, considering the heavy themes explored this evening. Jealousy, honesty, insensitivity, the meaning of friendship, commitment — heck, you’d think Dr. Phil had written this thing. Except that it was laugh-out-loud hilarious. My favorite moments? Barney’s too-old-for-this list (airport transport, couch crashes, moving, play attendance) was an excellent opening sortie. Lily’s hatred of the word “moist” was just plain eerie, because I’ve had the same problem for as long as I can remember (I also hate “cheese” and “oily”); I almost thought the writers were spying on me for a moment there. I thought the same thing again when Ted and Robin fought about the moisturizer (weirdly, I’ve had that argument as well — is that, like, common?!). But I loved, loved, loved the girlfriend personifications — they totally rang true-to-life for me. And I had a good guffaw when Barney sided with Robin about getting rid of the ex-girlfriends’ stuff, but did it for design reasons (“It’s like you’re living in a Bennigan’s”). But Lily’s play was the absolute pinnacle of the evening. Or was Barney’s play the pinnacle? Ah heck, who cares — let’s call it a wash. So, so, so funny. I do so adore this show when it’s in its groove. And as for the Ted/Robin reveal: holy hell, no way!!! I so did not see that coming. Did anyone else?!
Some quotes and then I’m off for some winks: — “Friends build each other up….“ “Yeah, if you’re a smurf.” — “I’m stupid but my rack is bigger than yours.” — “Papa gets swag.” — “Things with a heartbeat can stay.” — Marshall’s “Guys, four together” in a totally empty theater. — Lily’s “I am wra--envy.” — “I have to refill, be back in a minute, play’s not over.” — The robot’s “Feelings inside – OH no.” — “Spoiler alert: the robot falls in love.” — “This is a terrible lie; I’m just gonna bail.” — “We fought for so long, seasons changed outside the window, pages of the calendar blew off, it was crazy.” And how beautiful was that squirt-gun scene?

I love how the writers haven't forgotten about Marshall and Barney's slap bet...I can't wait to see the other three slaps!

Barney's play was my favorite part. The robot dancing was great. Marshall punching him was awesome, but can a punch count in the slap bet? Who cares, I guess, because it was so funny. I also loved Ted and Robin "walking" her ex-boyfriends. Although the exes in the bed and on the couch were kind of creepy.
Feel better, Michelle!

I didn't enjoy it as much as the reviewer but it was still a good episode. I love the cast especially, I really think it is a perfect cast of actors working together. Of course I was very happy that there was a slap in this episode, the timing was very appropriate. I also loved the too old for things that Barney mentioned. I am definitely looking forward to see what happens with Ted and Robin moving in together. Actually I probably enjoyed it more then I give it credit for. It is the only half hour comedy I sit down and watch weekly because it is the only one that I truly enjoy every week.

You didn't notice he said "That's two" after he SLAPPED Barney. I replayed and it was just a hard slap... SLAP BET. Five for eternity!!!
The odd thing was I just saw Drew Barrymore on Inside the Actors Studio on Sunday and she said "moist" was her least favorite word too!

It was a slap, although due to not great editing you can see he never actually made contact...but who cares, it was great to finally bring it back. I'm all for the writers keeping the rest of the slaps for subsequent seasons. And I'm also so proud of this show for its continuity such as keeping Lily's hair red in flashbacks. The Joey Buttafuoco pants had me giggling. I knew so many guys who wore those.

This show is great! I also loved the line, "yeah, if you're a smurf!" Does anyone know if there is anywhere online that I can see the entire Slap Bet episode? I missed it this fall and have been regretting it ever since!

I love it when TV writers don't forget, and make references to older episodes. It's like we're all in on something. Slap bet! "That's two." Hilarious! And a mighty appropriate place to use it, too.

Hooray! Slap #2! I was so excited - my husband - not a regular watcher of HIMYM - didn't get it - but I knew my fellow TVGuide online fans would.
Another good line from last night was Ted's: Bel Biv Devo called...even they don't want the pants back.
I DID NOT like Barney in eyeliner. I thought he looked weirdly like John Mahoney - made him look older. Not like when Marshall wore eyeliner while dressed up like Captain Jack...yummy!
Also did not see the Robin & Ted moving in together statement coming. My guess is that he'll move into her place.
