« How I Met Your Mother
Episode Recap: "No Tomorrow"
Welcome back!
I know you have all missed this show as much as I have, so I won’t waste words gushing about how happy I was to settle down on my couch tonight, pen and paper in hand. I am sure you all understand (except, maybe, for the pen and paper part).
Tonight was St. Patrick’s Day on How I Met Your Mother, although the holiday was mostly celebrated by Barney’s suit (yikes, what an eyesore) and not our gang. Instead, St. Patty’s was used to make a few important things happen for our dear Ted: He realized that the married Marshall and Lily are boring, threw caution to the wind and got a black eye for it (that he deserved), realized that maybe boring wasn’t so bad, and picked up that now infamous yellow umbrella. As for Barney, well, he and his suit ended up sleeping next to a dumpster. Note to Barney: Leave the suit there!
Yes, that yellow umbrella continues to taunt us. The Mother was there! Ted picked up her umbrella! Actually…not really all that exciting. It does give me hope that the writers are going to hold to their word and move this story arc forward, but as far as the episode was concerned, it just gave Ted a prop. A bright yellow prop. I am curious as to how many of you noticed the quick bit where Ted bumped into the random lass at the bar? Anyone? It grabbed my attention, is all I am saying.
On the other end of the spectrum (Ted’s being the sleazy and booze soaked end) are Marshall, Lily and Robin. Marshall and Lily take Robin along to put up their first piece of art in their first real apartment together. Exciting, right? Um, right? And then, of course, come the shenanigans — the apartment is crooked! Lily can’t find out or she will be devastated! Okay, here is the thing. As a television plotline, this wouldn’t interest me at all. And, as an audience who has never met me, none of you are going to find this amusing. But that is my friend’s apartment. I witnessed that entire scene, right down to a friend rolling a bottle down the floor. Sometimes having life experience to connect your shows with makes the entire thing better, is all I am saying. Plus, my friend also has a Hungry, Hungry Hippos game. What? It’s relevant to me! Ok, ok, back on track. Here is where the plot redeems itself a little, because Marshall’s invented ghost story and Lily’s reaction to said ghost story were my favorite parts of tonight’s show. Only Lily and Marshall could think up a racist Confederate army ghost, am I right? And, in the end, Robin’s one shining moment of the show really wraps up this subplot for me: “How is ‘racist ghost’ better than ‘crooked’?!” Marshall and Lily, you might be slightly more boring in marriage, but your eccentricities still endear you to me. And Robin gets a gold star for inventing a really dangerous and awesome game while also rocking a salad spinner on her head. You know, since she isn’t allowed to have her own plotlines anymore (ever since that shaving with butter thing, can you blame the writers?).
Really, I didn’t find tonight’s episode overly fantastic. I enjoyed it, laughed at parts, reveled in the joy of having my show back, but it was no “Pineapple Incident” (my number one episode, for those who care and took our poll). That said, I remain besotted with this show for many reasons. Tonight’s reason is simple — this show can take a joke, run with it, run it into the ground even, and still have me laughing at it when it shows up again three minutes later. The running gags about Barney’s suit were pretty much brilliant, from Marshall calling him Gumby to Ted telling him to give the bouncer his pot o’gold. From Robin saying that Marshall and Lily’s apartment was “an uphill battle” to Marshall saying they would have to name their daughter Eileen. Yes, it can be cheesy, but who doesn’t like some cheese from time to time? Well, unless you are lactose intolerant…in which case I mean you no offense! Well, anyway, that is my take. You are welcome to (and probably will) disagree, but that is just fine. Moving right along! Next week: Britney Spears! Oh, the blogging material. Can you taste it? I can’t wait.
And now, I leave you with my top three moments from tonight’s episode:
• Pocket Dialing. I know they used it for “deep meaningful” reasons at the end, there, but how many of you haven’t picked up the phone only to hear a vague scratching noise on the other end? It happens and it’s usually pretty funny, especially for those who are watching others go “Hello? HELLO? Are you even there? I am talking to your pocket/purse/coat, aren’t I?”
• Ghetto Barney! “I don’t see no ring on this finger!” Classic. Oh, how I have missed my little Barney Stone.
• Ted and Marshall’s conversation at the end. Sappy, sure, but the relationships amongst the five characters are what make this show great. Plus, how often are you going to hear Ted call Marshall sexy or a “Kentucky Derby winning steed”?
See you next week!

What a letdown. I cracked a smile just twice. I didn't laugh once. After this much time off, I expected something triumphant. Not a lame Kenny G joke.
Even worse, the main plot (act bad and good things happen) was cribbed from Seinfeld.
Well, looks like Brit is the only thing that can "save" the show. Too bad the show isn't as worth saving as it was the previous two seasons.
Worst of all, Cobie was completely wasted this episode. This is making me sad. Writers: puh-leez get back on track. I want my HIMYM back!
And where is the Big Bang Theory blog??

The show has really gone downhill and I can't explain why - OH WAIT, maybe I can.
Is it that the title is a total joke and a waste of my time? Or is it that there's nothing new and fresh? Or it that The Big Bang Theory in knocking the pants off of HIMYM and Two and a Half Men?
On The Big Bang Theory, I laugh so hard, I almost pee in my shorts.
To the writers of HIMYM, either have us meet the mother NOW or change the freaking title to Getting Drunk with my friends in New York City.

Hello, people!!! It's March 17 in NEW YORK CITY, and there's not a sign of a coat anywhere. At 9 at night (or even at 10 or so the next morning when Ted goes to find his phone), it's maybe 40+ degrees outside. And there are girls in backless dresses? GET REAL!!! I'm down here in (much warmer) Washington DC and I wouldn't leave the house without a coat. And Barney spending the night outside? Pneumonia for sure!
And March 18 is a Tuesday. So why aren't Ted & Barney at work? Marshall is dressed for it. Why not Ted?
And why, why, WHY did Ted go partying in that godawful outfit?
Don't get me wrong--I love the show, and I've been a fan of Alyson Hannigan's for years. But let's move some things into the real world, shall we?

Look on the bright side people: you at least got to see a new episode, even if it wasn't up to the usual standards of HIMYM.
After months of whining about the strike (I was on the writer's side, but just missed my shows), I was so excited to see some of my favorite shows were returning last night. But just my luck, I came home to a power failure and didn't get power until well after 10pm.
I have faith that things will turn around. Maybe the writers were just rusty after so much time off.

OK, apparently I too was the only one that was loving this episode. I was cracking up at Marshall & Robin trying to keep it from Lily. I did notice the chick in the bar that Ted bumped in to. I had recorded it, so I went back to check her out, in case she's the mother. WHOOO HOOO?! HATED Barney's suit, but it was sooo cheesy Barney it was perfect. I loved it just when you think they are done with the bad suit jokes, Ted comes out with, just give the bouncer your pot of gold so we can get in. LOVED IT. Also, the bouncer saying that if they were by themselves they could go in because there were too many girls in there already. Then Ted & Barney have a sidebar & you see in the background that the bouncers letting in more girls. What's up with that? Stupid idiot man bouncer. Other than that good episode. Next weeks should be interesting with that hot mess that's gonna be on there. Let's just pray that she wasn't actually at the bar last nite.....

This may not be the best episode, but I'll never say this show is not worth saving. I too loved the pocket dialing gag. I've experienced both ends of that many times.
I wasn't really digging the crooked apartment, but I'm bothered by this whole plotline anyway. In real life, spending all that money on that apartment and then having to do major repairs would be nothing but stressful never funny.
"I don't see no ring on this finger." Hilarious!!
As for the "bump" into the random girl, I find it hard to believe she'd be the mother. The writers know we are paying attention and we will know if it's not the same girl down the line, but who knows what their plan is.
I'm just happy the show is back. I was (and still am) totally against Britney being on the show, but since the cast seems to be totally positive about it, I'll get through it. Hopefully, Sarah Chalke will outshine Britney anyway.
Welcome back, gang!

I loved this episode, but I love every episode. It's a great show. I like the stupid little comments like uphill battle and eileen. I also loved robins reaction as marshall was making up the story about the ghost.
I am curious as to how many of you noticed the quick bit where Ted bumped into the random lass at the bar? Anyone? It grabbed my attention, is all I am saying I'd bet that wasn't her. At the end of the episode Ted said she was at the party but didn't meet her.

I didn't hate the episode as much as some of you, but following Big Bang Theory it was definately a bit of a letdown.
I can't believe how funny BBT has gotten. After the first couple episodes I was a little underwhelemed, but it started to grow on me. Now I haven't laughed as much at a half hour comedy that wasn't The Office in years as I did at BBT last night.

I have to agree with some others that the title/premise of the show has started to get annoying. I can look past this guy telling his kids so many details about his and his friends sex lives but it's been this long and the mother isn't even in it yet?
I suppose it's a petty thing to complain about but it's really starting to bug me.

While this wasn't as funny as previous episodes, "No Tommorrow" was still amusing enough to still be a show worth saving for next season. The crooked apartment/made-up ghost story for Lilly served as acceptable filler for the main one about Ted-going-back-to-being-himself-instead-of-becoming-another-Barney one. He and Barney acctually ditched those two hot girls so they can meet some really drunk ones inside? That's just crazy! I did like Ted and Barney's argument about which girl they wanted to pick without being able to pick which one was hotter. And the way Robin solved the things-rolling-on-the-floor-problem was pretty cool. I'm jonesing to see how Spears/Chalke results next week!

This was an enjoyable episode. It is a (small) step in the right direction for Ted to realize that he is not Barney. All the small, puns-laden, (somewhat) cheesy jokes that the main characters tell among themselves were there. I hope the Britney stunt next week does save this show.

Oh, and count me in for one who not only wants a "Big Bang Theory" blog, but one who wants a "Two and a Half Men", "New Adventures of Old Christine", and "Back to You" one (no one commented on the last two episodes that aired each after "American Idol" last month).

Good news HIMYM fans. The show had its highest ratings of the season last night. It even improved on BBT's ratings which also did great. HIMYM is sure to be renewed now. Whew!
