March 28, 2007: Whatever Possessed You
Within seconds of Medium starting I had two nearly opposing thoughts: “Is that really Mimi Kennedy?” and "Are we about to be subjected to the small-screen version of The Exorcism of Emily Rose?" Luckily, it was Mimi — I always loved her on Dharma and Greg as Dharma’s wacky hippie mother. And not for nothing, but The Exorcism of Emily Rose was pretty good. I watched it last year after I started blogging Dexter, since Jennifer Carpenter, who played Dexter’s sister Debbie, starred as Emily Rose in the movie.
Another fantastic effort from the writers, who apparently were feeling that a little twist was in order. I knew something was awry when Alison and Devalos went to talk to the very attractive woman who was supposedly Colleen’s therapist. She was a little too Katherine Heigl to be a psychiatrist. I thought that Michael was married to Mimi Kennedy even after the blonde bombshell doctor showed up. It wasn’t until Allison went to the hospital to bring Devalos’ papers and was looking in on Colleen that I realized I had it wrong. Michael came up behind her and spoke of his wife. Obviously, I missed something earlier on — I was very distracted by Joe at the bathroom mirror. His buff upper body staring me in the face like that. His yellow towel looked even better on him than those blue boxers. And frankly, since we saw those blue boxers again, I wondered, does he have another pair? Or are all of his boxers blue?
So Joe is going to Mars, huh? Well that can only mean that either he is really going to go to Mars and he is going to leave the show for a while, or that he is not going to Mars, in which case his dreams will be dashed all over Phoenix. Bridgette’s parting comment, “If anyone can get the ship to Mars, it’s you, Daddy” (I may have paraphrased) was hysterical since neither Joe nor Allison mentioned it to her. There are psychics everywhere in the Dubois household.
I really loved the story line with Devalos and his friend the priest. Even though we didn’t get a glimpse of their relationship, you could tell just how much this man meant to Devalos. The fact that they "met in the first minute on the first day of first grade” might have been my favorite line of the night. There are some friends you remember such specific details about that it's a testament to your friendship. This was pretty heartwarming.
There were a few other memorable lines, like, “Tell me beds don’t float” and, “Scruting is a definite possibility.”
Adam Goldberg, one of my favorite actors, stars next week in a new episode. I’ll be watching!

I was prepared to be scared silly tonight knowing it was supposed to be about possession. I've been terrified of exorcism movies since reading the book and seeing The Exorcist way back in what...the 70's? So that was a bit of a relief to me that it really wasn't all that scary...well, it was a wee bit scary!!
I love Mimi Kennedy too! First enjoyed her abilities probably before I knew her name, but first knew her name in my beloved series HOMEFRONT.
And Joe.....ahhh, what can I say? For one thing, Paula,, I'm going to believe that all his boxers are blue.
I'm not going to say anything about next week's previews...and PLEASE don't anyone else....but that looks disturbing.
Good review. Good episode.

Pinkie. Did the bit where the girl grew horrid fangs freak you out? It freaked me out, Big Time!!
I also liked the scene where Allison figured out she was the reason Joe failed the first test and how she remembered their first date when he took her to his place and showed her all his space stuff. I couldn't help but think about the previous episode, The Boy Next Door and how they almost met then. I loved the look on his face when she told him that her thought had actually been "My God, I have to sleep with this man. I have to marry this man." He looked so happy and kissable.
Wasn't that a kick when she told him she had only been joking? I am not sure I believed her though, that she was joking. I mean, really?
Adam Goldberg, isn't he dating Christina Ricci?

Personally I liked the Joe/Mars storyline most of this episode. I knew he was in trouble as soon as they said he would have to take a lie detector test. Great way to get around it though. Don't worry though, he won't be going to mars, he wants to be the project leader of a team designing navigational instruments for a mars probe, from what I gathered and based on Bridgettes comment (which I think was the best line of the show).
As for the murder, I was suspicious when the girl offered him a 'treat' in the first dream when she said she could only have 2 and saved him one. Can't say I had it all figured out then, but it wasn't exactly a suprise later.

I love this show and the delightful chemistry between all of the characters! My radar went on alert when Colleen offered the priest one of her candies. My suspicions were realized, when the nurse discovered them at the hospital and Colleen's husband and physician made such a fuss about them. As soon as that happened, I figured the candy was coated with a hallucinogenic which would explain the floating bed and the demonic face. Wonderful show, as always, especially seeing Joe in a yellow towel…yum!

I realized it was the candy when Allison had the dream of the husband being with the priest in the hall and he was screaming about the bed floating but we couldn't see it. I also figured out then that the husband killed the father.

Jerri, you bet your fangs that scene scared me. I was watching it all alone. Hubby out of town for the night. I curled up tight and said, "Oh no" Then pretty much laughed at myself. Told myself it was after all JUST Allison's dream! I'm the biggest wimp about all things possessed/exorcised.
And thanks for telling us that was Robert Beltran. I always thought he was so sexy on Star Trek Voyager. I sure didn't know it was him or even recognize that I should know him. WOW
Would liked to have seen more of Scanlon. He reminds me of a movie detective from film noirs of the 40's. He can come see me and not say much! But I'm not sure what Joe would think of that. Because if I can fantasize that Scanlon is here, Joe would have to be here first!

Thanks so much for that info Jerri36. We must all band together and try to save our Medium! I look forward to it every week [even though I must now tape it and watch on Thurs since Lost has taken its time slot].
I had read somewhere that Jake Webber wanted off the show because he didnt think his character did enough so if Medium is destined for cancellation he gets his wish but if not, the Mars scenario would certainly explain his abscence. Even if he just wants to lead a technical group, he would still have to leave Phoenix for TX or FL. I don't know which would be worse, no show or a much less compelling one without Joe.

The woman who played the psych doc also played a lawyer on the wonderful Kevin Hill a couple of years ago ...
This was a good episode - hate that it's on at the same time as Lost, though, so I'm extra grateful for the online availability!
And Paula - if Chris R. from AI is your boyfriend, does that make Joe your husband?!

This was another great episode. They really know how to keep it fresh. I loved the movie the Exorcism of Emily Rose, so this was a nice take off - from the get go with her on the ground - that took me straight back to the movie. Loved when the priest saw her turn into the "demon."
Loved Joe questioning Alison about demons, and her response. That they weren't real, and then he said something like "as opposed to ghosts?" Great stuff. I too was distracted by Joe in the mirror!
I knew that Bridge had to wake up and give us the best line of the night. She is so cute. And I loved Joe and Al's reaction. Good thing the interviewer didn't ask him about his daughters is right! LOL!
P.S. I'm ticked. I went to the E sight to vote (for Supernatural - sorry, but out of that list it's the one I want back the most) and clicked on SN, then when I clicked on Submit it changed my vote to What About Brian? I just about had a heartattack! I could give a bleep about that frickin' show! I was distressed. Anyone else have that experience?

I loved this episode. The possession had me a little worried because I wasn't sure how the writers would deal with it. But like always, they handled it wonderfully and it was just creepy enough to be suspenseful without being too scary (except for that part with the girl's face changing, that scared me too). I particularly loved the storyline with Joe and the Mars project. It was so sweet when Allison was talking about how she fell in love as he was showing her his planetary lunchbox. My favorite line was when she said, "Oh,my God, I have to sleep with this man. I have to marry this man." That just made me melt. But when she realized that it could be her standing in the way of his dreams, it was so sad and sweet at the same time. Another excellent ep by the cast and writers. And next week looks great too. Can't wait for that one.

Paula, I'm surprised you failed to mention Scanlon this week, or the lack of Scanlon as the case may be. At least he had some memorable lines!
We definitley need MORE SCANLON!
Colleen wasn't so crazy after all when she called her psychiatrist a ho was she?
Please everyone, do your part to keep Medium on the air - write NBC, go to the sites that have "save this show" or whatever and vote for Medium. Use the one on E also.
This is such a good show, it would just break my heart if it got cancelled. Where would I get my weekly David Cubitt fix?

I thought the candy was pretty obvious - no reason for the dream to show Colleen giving the priest her candy unless it was important, and the comment about only having two a day sounded exactly like pill-instructions. It took me a moment to recognise Chakotay - it was the voice that clued me in.
Allison may have thought she was joking when she said Mars, but her gift often manifests subconsciously. I thought it odd that in the second lie-detector test Joe said it was just his wife who was the risk - he knows Ariel & Bridgette have shown signs of the same abilities. But I guess they were just trying to setup the final joke.
I could accept the lack of Scanlon - but only because we got so much more Joe to compensate.
