Episode Recap: Being Joey Carmichael

It all started with a scrawny little kid beating up the school bully with his lunchbox, that only minutes before the bully had berated. Oh, how I yearned to do the same with my Partridge Family lunchbox. That would have shown any school bully I meant business.

It would take several dreams for Allison to find the significance of the dream of the young boy and his twin brother sitting outside the principal’s office. But soon she would realize that the boys in her dream were the same as the adult brothers she was also dreaming about. Miguel Ferrer starred in this episode of Medium as the grown-up version of twin brothers, Joey and Teddy Carmichael.

The story, a drug dealer, Curtis Lambert, was shot execution style, one shot into each knee and one into his head. Not that he didn’t deserve it, but it was nasty watching him crawl across the floor with his bloody knees. Who shot him was only part of solving the crime. According to Allison’s dream, it was cut and dry. Joey Carmichael shot and killed Curtis, but upon meeting him it was evident he could not have not been the culprit. Joey’s twin brother, Teddy, had gotten into some trouble with Curtis years back and had been shot in the head by Curtis’ wingman, Martin. The damage was significant, reverting Joey’s mental capabilities to that of a 12 year old and rendering his hands unusable.

Al’s next dream led her to Teddy. However, unbeknown to Joey, Teddy had been beaten and killed by Martin, leaving Joey to fend for himself. Twins often have a powerful bond that even death can’t break and Teddy kept taking care of his little brother, from the grave. Eventually, Teddy appeared to Allison and exposed the final secrets of the case.

Frankly, I couldn’t tell if they were really supposed to be one person with split personalities, or what. I knew that Teddy had to be dead after being shot in the chest as many times as he was. It must have felt great for Joey to finally stand up for his brother when he went and killed Martin in the restaurant.

Scanlon nearly begged Allison to come and help him on the case, and when her dreams weren’t adding up, he once again got irritated with her. Seriously, he needs to understand that although her dreams may not seem to make any sense, they are almost always right. And Lee rarely apologizes for doubting her. Frankly, I think it might be time to see Lee eat some crow.

Kelly Preston was back as the alluring, if crazy, Megan Doyle, and even though she apologized profusely to Joe for her completely inappropriate behavior last week, she ended up causing more commotion by sending Joe a $2,200 cashmere robe. When Joe showed Al the robe, they had a real knock-down fight in the garage, but I was completely on her side. He really should have come to her and told her when it happened. Granted, he didn’t feel like there was much to say, but he should have picked up on her mood all week. Plus, he’s been married to her for what, like 16 years, you’d think he might worry that she might have a dream about his dalliances with the new hottie in the office. Incidentally, Joe has really been getting a lot of screen time this season and I love it.

Bridgette was a troublemaker to her little sister Marie, when usually she is much nicer to her. She was playing with Marie’s glasses and wouldn’t give them back. Ariel was actually pretty nice to Bridge explaining why she couldn’t see out of them, yet Marie could see better. Allison put the kibosh on the teasing.

They don’t often show Allison or Joe just playing with the girls. Nine times out of ten it’s just breakfast, lunch or dinner. So it was especially fun to see Allison performing in the finger-puppet play for her newly eye-glassed daughter, Marie.

My favorite line:
“I find all this good cheer depressing.”

We’re one short week away from the season finale of Medium. But you can console yourself by watching clips in our Online Video Guide.

A very strange episode. I really hate Kelly Preston's character. I bet anything if Joe tries to leave the partnership she will accuse him of sexual harassment or worse. This is going to get ugly. Poor Alison, dreaming of the Joe and Megan's kiss. Poor Joe his wife actually is a mind reader.

Actually, Joe has the sexual harassment case on his side. First, he has the robe and the note she apparently sent with it (the one that Megan "read" to us using the time honored technique of having the voice over of the character read the letter.) And second he could bring up the attempted kiss, although that would be more "he said, she said" than something with physical proof.

Maybe Joe should have told Allison about the attempted kiss, but he didn't initiate it, he thought it was handled, and what good would it have served had Megan never done anything like that again? He also handled the "dinner" plan well by writing it off as Megan having a busy social life. So on the whole, I thought Joe did a pretty good job dealing with Megan and showing again how he's a dedicated husband. Pretty good for a louse, eh Paula?

Good morning...I pretty much had the case/mystery figured out 15 minutes into the show; don't like it when that happens but nevertheless I enjoyed the show...towards the end, that scene with Alison and Joe where he is listening to "Girls just wanna have fun"; it broke my heart; Joe looked so defeated; when will the Dubois family catch a break???...yeah, when Megan and Joe were talking about what had happened and she tells him something along the lines of "are you sorry you hit me?" that's when I realized that can not end well, but I'm hoping that, somehow, Alison will be able to help...

Paula, you seem to have some sort of love/hate attitude towards Joe the "louse" (yeah, we're still waiting for an apology for that one. Would it be any more appropriate for me to watch Megan hit on Joe and then make a nasty remark about how most women get when they're drunk?).

I'm with Darclyte on this one. I think Joe handled Megan very well. He shot her down without making too big a fuss--or giving in to her attempted seduction. And I don't think he was so wrong not to tell Allison. But she made him feel guilty for simply putting the non-incident behind him.

But then you closed your blog by saying how much you love Joe's extra screen time this season. Make up your mind, woman!

I do agree that Megan isn't done with Joe, and that things might get ugly.

It would be nice if the next person that gets killed on the show turns out to be Megan so that Joe Dubois can finally catch a break!! It is clear that Megan is a NUT JOB and I'm kind of suprised that Allison didn't see that in a dream but then she always says that she doesn't get many dreams about the family

"Frankly, I couldn’t tell if they were really supposed to be one person with split personalities, or what."

I thought with Teddy's ghost/spirit showing up at Allison's house, it was pretty obvious that this was not split personality but a ghost/possession thing.

Letter to Joe:

Joe,

It is not my so considered opinion that you do have a sexual harassment case. Now I would like to make a suggestion: Get your adorable ... posterior ... over to Devalos, who, by the look of his home, was a very successful attorney before becoming DA, and sue the ... female-dog!

Settle out of court for the controlling interest, and fire the whacked out horn dog!

Ever Respectably,

I have to agree with Paula on this one, at least partially. Given his wife's abilities, it's just plain stupid not to let her know what happened, especially with her atitude toward him that week; it was obvious that she knew something. That being said, I wouldn't lable him a louse however. He handled everything very well untill he didn't tell Allison about the situation. It broke my heart at the end when he told her he would never cheat and that he would sacrifice everything he had worked for just to prove it to her. The fact that she is going to turn out to be a modern single white female is just plain bad for everyone, but it should make for good viewing.

I loved last night's episode. I was sure we had a split personality thing happening. Either that or Joey was faking his condition and purposely taking over Teddy's persona. I was pleasantly surprised when Teddy showed up at Allison's and fessed up to his part in things. That made it much cooler. Nice that Joey took the protector role for once and capped the shooter and equally sweet that Teddy took his place for the trial and prison term. Miguel Ferrer was excellent in both roles.

I agree that Joe should have told Allison. Her attitude made it pretty clear she knew something and given her abilities it wasn't much of stretch for Joe to know she'd "seen" something. Even though Megan is going to break even crazier according to the previews, I thought it was wrong of Allison to allow Joe to just dissolve the partnership without another stab at setting her straight. I think he put her mind to rest on the fidelity issue so she should have allowed him to carry on and pose a united front against Megan's advances.

I agree. This situation needs to be handled woman to woman and I don't imagine that Allison will allow Joe to throw everything away until she can talk to the potential home wrecker herself.

Next week should be interesting!

OK. I do not know about the rest of you, but i for one am very tired of Allison blowing up at Joe. For heavens sake, why did she not tell him about the dream. Now about Joe. Where are his brains. After what his partner did why does he not find out about what she is up to and how can he spend all that time at the office, doing what. I really liked this show in the beginning. I sure hope that they begin to put some brains in Joe head and make Allison a more loving person.

Paula, your recap wasn't too bad, but I'm sorry dear...your grammar is atrocious! You use the wrong words (it's "cut and DRIED", not "dry"!) and your punctuation is not good. Do you have an editor? I only say this because the more that people read items with bad grammar, the more they think "Well, I read it online from a REAL writer, so it must be correct".

My kids call me the "Grammar Nazi", but I think it's important to not forget the rules that make for good writing.

Hi Darclyte, GarryB, long time viewer, first time blogger here. You know what would really help the productivity and enjoyment of this blog? If you would get over whatever personal issues you have and drop your stupid louse comments. Yeah, Paula said Joe (and all men) was a louse. But, what, it was like five weeks ago. It's done. It's over. No one cares anymore. Yeah, she was probably being unfair to Joe and maybe even to the male gender as well. And, yeah, if you said something similar about a woman, others would probably be all over your tired butt like white on rice. But, you know what, they should. Considering men have been degrading women and others for like EVER, there are different standards for the two genders. Paula's not going to apologize for an off-hand joke she made about men FIVE WEEKS AGO. She made a harmless joke. You did not get it. It is not her problem you didn't get her joke, it's yours. There will not be an apology to you (and other men) from Paula. It's not and should not ever happen. Get over it and move on. For the love of all that is good and right in this world (including this blog), MOVE ON.

However, regarding this episode, Joe should have definitely told Alison about Megan's drunken kiss, even if Alison did not have psychic powers. Nothing is more important than honesty in a relationship. So, even if Joe thought he had squashed the problem, he should have told his WIFE about it before talking to Megan. Even if for no other reason than to be HONEST in his MARRIAGE. (Yes, these capitalized words are necessary.) Alison would have understood. She would have been angry with Megan, but she would have understood. That is just the type of person that is Alison. Plus, I think the bigger issue is that this lie of omission is the second time Joe has failed to consult Alison on a very important matter and both times were in regards to the same woman (Megan). Joe seems to be on a slippery slope. This slope does not concern infidelity, it concerns truthfulness. Joe and Alison have been married for 16 years and Joe has never lied to her. These last two lies have shown Joe in a very poor light. Joe may not be a louse, but perhaps, for the first time ever, Joe is being seen as a less than pristine husband.

Love the blog, Paula. KEEP IT UP!

I dont know if i would have told Allison...i think that's a gray area. He was certainly honest and told her and showed her the robe though. That is commendable.
