Episode Recap: There's No Place Like Home

As the final moments of tonight’s episode unspooled accompanied by the stirring music of Michael Giacchino, I could barely stand the suspense as we watched all of our favorite core characters positioning themselves (or being positioned) for the battle to come. All of the pieces are falling into place for what is sure to be a mind-blowing finale in two weeks.

As the episode began with a flash forward, we saw the homecoming of the recently-saved Oceanic Six. In the back of a military cargo plane, they got their stories aligned and prepped for the onslaught of questions to come, deciding that their collective shock would be their best defense against probing queries for which they had no answers. Jack continued to play the role of leader rallying his troops, though it seemed as though his credibility was already beginning to wane at this point, his typical heroic demeanor in some way offset by a touch of desperation. It was bittersweet and emotionally satisfying to see each of these characters facing the ones they left behind—Jack seeing his mother, Hurley and Sun seeing their parents. But what was worse was the big question mark we are still left with—why did these six leave the island and what was the fate of the ones that remained?

On the island, the survivors slowly began to realize the danger they were facing from Keamy and his mercenaries as Daniel pushed to get people back to the freighter. Jack and Kate met up with a shell-shocked Sawyer, Miles and Aaron on the way to find the errant helicopter. We later learned that Lapidus had purposely dropped the phone so that the survivors could track him. Meanwhile, fresh off their visit to Jacob’s cabin, Locke, Hurley and Ben continued their trek through the island as Ben formulated a plan to sacrifice himself—at least temporarily—to buy them time and to help them reach the elusive Orchid station.

Back to the future, Sayid enjoyed his long-awaited reunion with Nadia; Sun confronted her father about Jin and then dropped the bombshell that she had used her settlement to buy controlling interest in her father’s company; some of the Oceanic Six gathered to celebrate Hurley’s birthday, as the gift from his father served as an eerie reminder that the numbers still have some kind of role to play; and Jack delivered a long-delayed eulogy for Christian and received some disturbing news about his family tree. (That was Veronica Hamel of Hill Street Blues fame playing Jack’s mother.)

Thanks to Daniel, a handful of survivors made it back to the freighter, including Sun, caring for Aaron, and Jin who had a tense and unexpected reunion with the long-last Michael. The survivors had barely made it on board before Desmond, Michael and Jin discovered a huge stash of C4—enough to incinerate 10 freighters. And back on the island, Kate and Sayid landed in a trap courtesy of the timeless Richard Alpert.

We did get a few more answers tonight, in fits and starts of course:
— the world is under the impression that Kate gave birth to Aaron on the island.
— Jack mentioned that eight people survived, so what’s the story with the additional two survivors who allegedly died on the island?
—Sun claimed that Jin died on impact. Why is that such a critical point (later clarified on his tombstone).
—Jack did not learn the truth about Claire until he was off the island.

So, moving the island is a “measure of last resort?” I should hope so since it seems like a rather large undertaking. But as Ben reminded John, “I always have a plan.” What of the other survivors? Where is this grand plan leading them and how can this season top itself? As I am sitting here and rewatching the final few minutes, I am again convinced that not only will the finale meet expectations. It will exceed them. See you in two weeks!

Why do people keep insisting on casting Rebecca Pidgeon in roles where she has to attempt an American accent? Either let her sound British or get an American actress because her "Pidgeon-English" sounds awful.

As soon as they stepped off the C-130, Hurley noticed that nobody was there for Sayid so he puts his arm around him pulls him into his family. Perfect.

Now we know how Jack found out about Claire being his sister.

Interesting that they said that 8 got out of the plane but only 6 survived to be rescued. Since Aaron was born on the island (both in "reality" and the cover story) that leaves 3 other people who got out of the plane. Who, and why would they add them to their story?

Personally I thought the scene when Jack learned that Claire was his half-sister was one of the more touching moments of tonight's episode. I appreciate the haste of getting a blog up but at the same time a little more detail would be great too. I really liked the staging of the next few scenes - (PLEASE don't kill Sawyer!) and I really felt the angst of so many of our favs at the end.... I'm a tad scared but at the same time I cannot WAIT 2 more weeks! (again, who thinks Sawyer wll die????)

one the last scenes with sun looking hopefully at the door waiting for jin to come out, all i was thinking was NOOOOO NOT DESMOND. please don't kill him. i have a feeling that the explosives on the boat are going to blow and jin gets killed in the blast. which makes sense since daniel dae kim did get a dui earlier, and that always seems to be the kiss of death for any lost character.

I thought that it was a great episode and look forward to seeing how everyone gets together, why only 6 leave, etc.

nteresting that they said that 8 got out of the plane but only 6 survived to be rescued. Since Aaron was born on the island (both in "reality" and the cover story) that leaves 3 other people who got out of the plane. Who, and why would they add them to their story

I’m thinking that Charlie may be one mentioned to make it sound like he died as a hero. Obviously it would involve a fabricated reason as to why as opposed to the real reason.

i have a feeling that the explosives on the boat are going to blow and jin gets killed in the blast. which makes sense since daniel dae kim did get a dui earlier, and that always seems to be the kiss of death for any lost character.

Only three actors were reported for getting DUI's and I don't think that they'd keep Daniel Dae Kim going for this long for storyline purposes only to say "you're a goner cause you got a dui over a year ago." I know that you didn't actually say that but I've seen posts all over the net where people look too much into the dui thing at least imo so I figured that I'll clarify since I'm bored lol.

AAA wasn't gone because of a dui as a lot of people still say to this day either. It was for driving without a license and I believe that was even thrown out. He left on his own will after both of his parents died.

Several other cast members were reported for traffic violations too (I assume speeding) so I don't buy too much into that like I said.

I'm thinking that when the freighter blows up (being the finale I'm pretty sure that it will happen) we will be left hanging as to who lives or dies only to find out that they're all somehow alive, at least the main characters. So even after the finale I wouldn't be too concerned.

Have to get this out of the way first: I love Michelle Forbes! It was cool to see her in the show. And I'm pretty sure that April Grace (Ms. Klugh) was on Grey's Anatomy tonight.

Hurley was the first off the plane. He was so wide-eyed and happy to be home. Kate was the last to stand up, and that seemed fitting. I wonder if she thought her mother wasn't there because she had died, or because she didn't want to be there. Maybe her absence is what led Kate to be so cold to her mom during the trial. I'm glad Nadia wasn't on the tarmac at first. That would've been too predictable. But I'm glad she showed up outside.

Nadia's appearance made me think for a second. I thought the O6 were taken to that facility because it would be more secluded. That place was like an upfront or something. The questions were great though, especially the one about Kate's pregnancy and legal probs. The media loves survivor stories, but they love scandals even more.

Did I misunderstand something, or does the island actually have a name?

You would think that with all the scientific stuff Charlotte and Daniel brought they would have a change of clothes. They've been wearing the same outfits for days.

So the orchid hasn't been used in 15 years, or did Ben mean that box had been hidden for 15 years? And what is the purpose of sending the rest of the Others away when Ben knew the freighter people were coming? Wouldn't it make sense to keep as many people behind to fight as possible? Besides, Smokey is like the ultimate guard dog, so why not let it loose on the invaders again?

Hmm...is the second person Sun spoke of Widmore, or someone else? And that "five different banks statement" I'm assuming was about Sun buying the company.

Yeah, maybe an island themed party isn't the best idea for someone who spent over one hundred days as a castaway. I had guessed if Hurley gave the money away it wouldn't be cursed anymore. That is until he got in the car. Well, at least his parents are still together.

I still don't get why Widmore would give orders to destroy the island, even as a last resort. He went through all this trouble to assemble a team and find the island. Ben is one man. It can't be all that difficult to take him out without destroying everything else.

The reunion with Michael was great. There is so much history between those three characters, and yet they've each gone through their own separate journeys in the time since Mike left. Jin's "I understand" line was perfect.

I knew Claire's mom would wake from her coma!! But I never thought she would be the one to reveal Jack and Claire being sibs. I don’t think any of us saw that coming. You know that has to be what started Jack over the edge. Hopefully Desmond's vision comes true and Claire does end up on a helicopter.

You have to hand it to Ben, that man has never been afraid to walk right into enemy territory. If Locke is indeed the "chosen one" he has a lot to live up to.

I'm glad the strike didn't totally wreck this season. The last few episodes have been great at propelling the story forward while solving quite a few mysteries. The only bad part about the next two weeks is knowing that the finale is going to be incredible and we're going to have a long wait until season 5.

I wonder if she thought her mother wasn't there because she had died, or because she didn't want to be there. Maybe her absence is what led Kate to be so cold to her mom during the trial

I always figured that the fact that her mom is the one that turned her in and therefore made the whole fugitive scenario and subsequent trial necessary in the first place is why she was so cold but the other things that you said are also possible. When Kate saw her mom for the last time in flashbacks she screamed for help and almost got her caught again. Granted Kate probably would have been revealed as having killed Wayne even if her mom never turned her in but I'm guessing that still weighs on her in additipn to the things that you mentioned.

And what is the purpose of sending the rest of the Others away when Ben knew the freighter people were coming? Wouldn't it make sense to keep as many people behind to fight as possible?

Probably but Ben "always has a plan" so he probably has a reason that makes more sense than what we can think of as of now. At least I'd like to think so.

Besides, Smokey is like the ultimate guard dog, so why not let it loose on the invaders again?

If the only way of actually having some control of it to do what it did a few weeks ago is in Ben's home, that's no longer viable.

I knew Claire's mom would wake from her coma!! But I never thought she would be the one to reveal Jack and Claire being sibs.

That was a great scene, especially when she saw Aaron and we as an audience knew that she had no clue that it was her grandson.

Was Rebecca Pidgeon in tonight's episode? I didn't see her. If you are talking about the lady on the plane with the Oceanic 6, that's Admiral Cain, er, I mean Michelle Forbes (from BSG and other shows.) She does have an odd way of speaking, too, in my opinion but nowhere near like Rebecca Pidgeon (from The Unit).

About the rest of the show, I am starting to rewatch it just now. Have to because I was still in shock from CSI and ER's finales. But, of course, I watch LOST three or four times anyway.

the revelation to Jack about Claire was devastating. What a great way to finally bring that together.

And always great to see Ms. Forbes. 2 weeks is 2 long!

Why do people keep insisting on casting Rebecca Pidgeon in roles where she has to attempt an American accent?

Do you mean Rebecca Mader, the red head? If not, I missed what role Rebecca Pidgeon played tonight.

If you're speaking of Rebecca Mader, she's speaking with her own accent. There have been numerous interviews (including TVGuide's) and LOST podcasts where she talks about the fact that the role of Charlotte Staples was originally written as American, but Darlton decided to let her speak in her natural accent.

"When I prepared the audition piece in my head, I was ready to go either way. So when I met Damon and Carlton, I went in speaking my own accent and they were like, "We like it this way."

I don't think Jin is really dead.

That episode was awesome. Pure and simple.

What an awesome setup for the finale!

Favorite line of the night - "Jesus Christ is not a weapon."

I think they did a nice job highlighting Kate and Aaron together with no one to greet them on the tarmac - I really got a sense of why Kate and he become so tightly bonded.

So, the C4 - do we think that it will be one of those "kill me and the freighter goes with me" things? Wonder if Michael will die in the blast, his purpose finally fulfilled.

So many holes for the consipracy theorists to poke at in the concocted story of the Oceanic Six. Kate 6 months pregnant? An Indonesian fishing vessel happens to wash ashore? They leave one island for another and somehow know where to go? I'd love to get a feel for how the public receives this. Lapidus can't be the only skeptic.

When they got off the plane, and Hurley went to his parents, Sun went to hers, and Jack's mother came up to him, I said, "Who's there for Kate?" Then Hurley drew Sayid in, but Kate still stood all alone with Aaron. I would have thought that Jack wouldn't leave her by herself, unless the circumstances before they leave are tense between them for some reason.

My mind is whirling, trying to figure out how everybody gets from their current places on the island to being rescued--Sun and Aaron on the freighter, Hurley with Locke and Ben, Kate and Sayid captured by the Others, and Jack with Lapidus and Sawyer by the helicopter, presumably getting ready to take off. Not to mention learning what happens to those who don't leave--are some killed? Do they stay voluntarily (well, we know that Sawyer does...or Jack wants to think so)?

I've been a fan of Michelle Forbes since her days as Sonny/Solita on The Guiding Light, and she only gets better. I'm curious why the co-pilot held onto his lucky charm (or whatever it was) while claiming that the O6 had "bad mojo".

The scene where Jack finds out that Claire is his half-sister was, IMO, a fine piece of acting by Matthew Fox. You could tell that he wanted to ask who she was, although per their story, he wouldn't have known her, and he couldn't therefore show too much emotion upon hearing the news. Again...are the rest of them alive? Is Claire?

The next two weeks are going to drag by, especially since Lost is going to be one of the few new shows the week it airs. Maybe I'll save some of my recorded shows and dole them out slowly so I have new TV for a while.

Favorite line of the night - "Jesus Christ is not a weapon."

That was funny. It made me think of an old Bill Cosby routine about his thinking, as a child, that his name was "Jesus Christ", and his brother thought that his was "Dammit"...or vice versa.

Not only did Jack have a lot on his mind based on the messed up things that he experienced and the secrets that he had but he then found out that his father had an affair, that he had a sister, and that his sister was Claire of all people. Talk about a huge blow within the matter of seconds and like you said he couldn't even ask anything. Between that, time going on and all of those things weighing on him, seeing his dad's ghost, plus other things that we've yet to see weighing on him, and also his predisposition to drink, no wonder why he ends up like he did in last year's finale.
