Episode Recap: Something Nice Back Home

I’m not even sure where to begin. From the signature eye-opening shot at the beginning to Sawyer’s impassioned cries for Claire at the end, tonight’s episode intrigued, confused and frustrated me. It also left me emotionally exhausted and thoroughly succeeded in reintroducing some things I had forgotten. And, as always, it created more questions than answers.

Let’s start with Matthew Fox in a towel. Not bad. Not bad at all. (Anyone else as excited as me to see him in Speed Racer?) I pretty much knew who he was co-habitating with as soon as he tripped on the child’s toy in the kitchen. As much as I like Jack and Kate on the island, it felt disconcerting to see them living a life of domestic bliss. (Or Heaven, as Hurley would later refer to it.) It wasn’t just that I half expected to see Kate scamper out the fancy French doors to shimmy up a tree or follow a blood trail, though that was certainly part of it. It was also the underlying melancholy that seemed to permeate their happy facade. Even during the marriage proposal scene, there was a palpable sadness to their interaction. Kate’s tears didn’t feel joyful—they felt wrought with uncertainly and guilt. At this point on the timeline, Jack has apparently reunited with Kate and Aaron after an unexplained estrangement that coincided with Kate’s trial and seemed to stem from her arrangement as Aaron's "mother." (An arrangement that Jack called her on the carpet about tonight.) The demons that Jack had succumbed to at the end of last season are clearly beginning to take hold as he self-medicates with booze and pills in response to the stress of seeing his dead father loitering in the waiting area of his office.

Even more troubling was Jack’s unsettling visit with Hurley, whose break from reality has obviously deepened. As he talked about his visits with Charley, he shared a message that his deceased friend wanted him to pass along, “You’re not supposed to raise him, Jack.” I immediately thought back to Claire’s season one visit with the psychic who warned her that it was imperative for her to raise the baby herself. Her disappearance tonight might be a clue to how Kate ultimately ends up taking Aaron off the island and I am just so anxious to see how the "rescue" of the Oceanic Six plays out.

Back on the island, two dramas played out at the same time. Jack’s medical emergency brought Juliet and Kate together in an unexpected way and also highlighted the fact that Juliet is well aware of the emotional connection that Jack and Kate share. While the actual surgery scene was brutal (I wanted to jump into the television and give him the chloroform myself!), the scene that followed with Juliet and Kate (as Jack pretended to sleep) was very satisfying to watch. You can truly understand how a guy would be torn between these two beautiful, passionate, intelligent women. But unfortunately for Juliet, it appears that Kate wins, at least in the short-term.

Meanwhile, Sawyer, Miles, Claire and baby Aaron made for an unlikely traveling party as they inched their way back to the beach and stumbled across the rotting bodies of Danielle and Carl. I am loving the heroic turn that Sawyer has taken in these last few episodes—stepping up to take care of Claire in Charlie’s absence. (The bit about the restraining order was hysterical until Miles used it against him when Claire disappeared in the middle of the night.) I am also intrigued by the seemingly heroic antics of Lapidus who surely saved the island dwellers from Alex’s fate when he told them to hide from the murderous Keamy. I’m still somewhat confused about how Miles, Daniel, Charlotte and Lapidus fit in with the freighter folk. Daniel seems to have some redeeming qualities and Miles really only seems interested in self-preservation. But, Charlotte’s edginess seems to imply there is more to their story than meets the eye. I enjoyed that Jin caught on to her quickly tonight and now seems to have the upper hand with her. His determination to get Sun off the island is giving me renewed hope about his “death.”

So, what are we left with? Claire's waking to find her dad (also Jack's dad, and also, incidentally, dead) rocking baby Aaron and the next thing you know, the baby is left behind and Claire is no where to be found. And what's up with Jack's continuing ambivalence over Aaron? Is he really uncertain about his parenting skills or does he learn the truth about his link to Claire before he leaves the island? Is that realization fueling his guilt?

The last scene with Jack and Kate also left us with some questions. What was the deal with Kate's errand for Sawyer? Why does he opt to stay behind and how does that choice come about? And what does Jack mean when he says he saved Kate? I'm hoping that we get some answers in the coming weeks. But whether it is answers we get or more questions, I'll be watching.

Random thoughts...

I love how we got more insight on Jack's starting with the pills, drinking, and soon wanting to go back. He read the paper and it said Yankees sweep Red Sox or something like that. I read that took place in August 2006 and his forward last year began in April 2007 so he has several months of his spiral awaiting him. It'll be interesting to see where Claire went. I also wonder if the smoke detector beeping was an indication of Jack's father being a figment of the "smoke monsters" somehow being off of the island. Of course smoke would make a real alarm go off at "full blast" so to speak and a dying battery would just involve beeping, which is what we actually heard, but maybe there's a coorelation regardless. Kate's favor for Sawyer probably had to do with his daughter Clementine and ex Cassidy, who Kate had met before, of course not knowing who she was. It looks like Danielle certainly is dead but I still believe that we'll witness her backstory somehow or in some way hear more about it from another perspective.

I eagerly await next week. Everything else that springs to mind was pretty much covered in this blog.

This season has been amazing.

I loved the development of Jack and Kate. Just when Jack is back on track, the appearances of his father derail him again. Kate's priority is Aaron while Jack's lies with rescuing those left behind -- thus love is not enough. But, it was nice to resolve that Jack does really love Kate. And, that Juliet loves him enough to recognize that.

Sad to see that Carl and Danielle really did not survive. Creepy that both Claire and Miles could see Jack's dad. Love Sawyer as the hero, and wondering what's up with Kate's promise to him. Interesting to see what's up with the freighter scientists versus the scary military fighters.

I'm still in shock that we got this AMAZING Jack/Kate filled episode....

BEST EPISODE EVER!!! This episode renewed my faith in Lost...Watching Lost had almost become a habit UNITL this episode aired...This is why I fell in love with Lost in the first place...

There are no words...Jack/kate were AMAZING. If this episode don't prove their love I don't know what will...

I'm also happy I got a episode WITHOUT Ben, Sayid, and Locke. I'm so sick of seeing them in almost every single episode.

Sawyer, Miles, Claire were interesting...but my attention was on Jack/Kate in both the past and future

LOVED THIS EPIOSODE!!!!
OMG...I gotta go rewatch this episode for sure!

This was like the first episode this season that felt like classic Lost to me. It was a nice change of pace from the craziness of this season. This season has been chock full of excitement and new information and pacing, and I love every minute of it, but I also love how the writers were able to sort of change it up, leave Ben and co. alone for an ep, and focus on Jack, who really hasnt been front and center much this season. Im excited to see where all this business with Christian Shephard goes, and what happened that would make Claire leave the baby behind. I really enjoyed this episode, and as an added bonus, Kate was especially hot, lol.

Some minor things I noticed but I bet will be very important.

When Miles asked "What did she see" when Claire said she was seeing things.

Jack called Christian "a good story teller" This seemed very important.

Im very confident that when this show is all said and done we will learn that the conversation between Hurley and Jack in this episode was pretty important.

Finally, the smoke alarm going off before Jack's dad appeared. I know there was a reason for this. Is he the smoke monster? I dont think its that easy. Also, did anyone catch Christian Sheppard's attire?

That was a good episode.

Anyway, I also knew that Jack and Kate were together cause when Jack went down the stairs the stairwell looked liked Kate's. However, I wasn't quite sure it was Kate, cause the voice in the shower sounded different. IDK, I probably need to watch the show again just to make sure that the voice in the shower was Kate's.

Ohhhhh, I also wanted to jump through my tv and knock Jack out. That scene was nerve racking. It reminded me when Jack was about to amputate Boone's leg in S1.

Another thing that I knew that it Charlotte spoke and understood Korean. It way to obvious that she did after she kept looking at Jin and Sun during their conversation.

Im still in shock in how in the world Keamy and the others freighties survived Ole Smokey. How was that possible? But what surprised me the most is that they took time to bury Danille and Carl. Or did Alex did that? Im thinking it was Alex. Darkufo has audio of the whispers of Danille and Carl. The site also has some very interested screencaps of Kate and Jacks house. Including of one where Jack's scar seems to disappear when he was the towel wrapped around him.

Loved Swayer, Claire, and Miles together. I was so wanting to have Miles and Swayer to have scenes together. I knew those 2 would have some funny scenes together. The "restraining order" against Miles for Claire hysterical.

I also agree that the errand that Kate went for Swayer was to see Cassidy and his kid. And for some reason I think that Claire and Christian are up in that tree, looking down on Swayer and Aaron.

One more thing, I think my absoutly favorite part was when Rose called Charlotte Red to back off. That was hysterical to me.

I can't help but wonder if the flash forwards are things that could happen, not necessarily things that will happen.

Not only do I agree with you, but if I'm not mistaken, didn't Cassidy use the name "Noreen" when she helped Kate get into the diner's bathroom to see Kate's mom? If so, then Kate was on the phone with Cassidy when Jack walked in on her. I was so sure that he was going to press redial on the phone just to find out who she was talking to, and his jealousy was really no surprise considering how his relationship went with his ex-wife (blanking out on her hame right now).

Matthew Fox in a towel was better than I thought! Rrrrrrrrrr...

Totally caught Christian's outfit in the waiting room--it's the same clothing he's had on since Season One when Jack saw him on the beach, and I think he was wearing it in the rocking chair when Hurley saw him in Jacob's house. Poor Hurley... he totally unravels, huh? :(

I'm also very upset that Danielle really is dead, and wondering how the heck Darlton is gonna give us her backstory--because supposedly she does get one.

Re Claire remaining on the island--not according to Desmond's vision, she isn't. This is the whole reason why Charlie gave up his life, to make sure that Desmond's vision of Claire getting on a chopper comes true.

I guess I'm in the minority re Jack and Kate. I think Kate and Sawyer totally belong together--come on, a con man and a con woman??? I just really think they suit each other. So I totally was NOT happy about their seemingly domestic bliss, but I'm glad to know that Sawyer is alive and obviously still on the island, since I thought for sure he was one of the major characters getting killed off this season.

Can't WAIT for next week, when we find out who the heck Jacob is, and why Locke and Hurley can "see" the cabin!!! :O

Key line: "He's not even related to you!"
The way Jack said that gave the impression that he knew that Aaron was his half brother.

Rember when Jack was the reluctant leader? The guy who had the role of hero thrust upon hin against his will? Now *and in the Oceanic 6 future( he seems to have a sort of Messiah Comples. He has to be the one in charge of every detail, has to know what happens every second.

Thought it was one of the strongest FF eps yet.

The JACK KATE stuff was riveting. Having watched the show since the pilot, I really did enjoy watching them in momentary bliss. Even if their bliss was colored with pain, you could tell that the closeness to each other was extremely intense and passionate.

I'm confused.
I thought that when Juliet told Kate about Jack kissing her to forget about his feelings for Kate that she was letting Kate know that she can't use Jack to forget about Sawyer.
I think Kate is trying to love the wrong man, and it ends up backfiring in the future. She ends us doing a favor for sawyer at the expense of her relationship with Jack.

Also, Miles' ability to "see dead people" could be how Jack finds out that Claire is his sister.
And a weird thought,
Wouldn't you like to see everyones faces when Miles walks over Nicki and Paulo's grave.
"Dude, they weren't dead when you buried them."

Funny things...
Restraining orders in the jungle.
Charlotte knowing Korean.
Jack getting sick on an island that heals.
Hurley's meltdown. so sad.

good episode, and Kate did look good. She wears less at home than on a tropical island.

charliy: aaron is jack's nephew, not half brother. claire is his half sister.

not sure hurley is nuts...he just may be the only one who knows the truth...

just cuz claire doesn't get on this helicopter doesn't mean she's not rescued. desmond might have seen way into the future...

and yes, jack looked much better in a towel than i thought he would...i know some of you said kate is choosing the wrong guy, but i think jack is choosing the wrong girl...i think he and juliet are a much better pair.

one more thing...it definitely seemed like jack knew aaron was his nephew when he said to kate "you're not his mother, you're not even related to him." just my feeling anyway.
