Episode Recap: Eggtown
This show gets me every single time. I don’t know if I am in the minority on this or not, but I didn’t see the Kate/Aaron twist coming at all. I thought for sure that the baby was Sawyer’s and that Kate would walk into that bedroom and call him James. I gasped when she said Aaron—literally gasped! I thought that we would learn the reason that Kate decided to leave the island was because she lied to Sawyer about being pregnant and knew that the only way to save the baby (and herself) was to leave. I think it is safe to say that we can count Aaron as one of the Oceanic Six. So what does that leave us with, you ask? A boat-load (or rather, a freighter-load) of questions, as usual. And yet, instead of being completely frustrated, I am riveted.
At first glance, as Locke prepared breakfast for his hostage, I thought that we were being introduced to the next “survivor.” I’m sure most eager fans have already identified the novel that John grabbed off the shelf as Philip K. Dick’s 1981 science fiction novel VALIS (an acronym standing for Vast Active Living Intelligence System). Click here for a link to the author’s site and a summary of the book. Based on the quick research I did, there are some interesting parallels to be drawn.
Overall, the flash-forwards tonight were not as compelling as I hoped they would be based on the previews with Kate in a sea of paparazzi. However, I am glad that we got a solid explanation about how she was able to walk away from a murder rap. It would have been harder to swallow if she got off the island and all was simply forgiven as a result of the notoriety. (To all my fellow Big Love fans, Kate’s attorney was played by Shawn Doyle, Bill’s reluctant-polygamist brother Joey.)
Back on the island, Kate was up to her old tricks, mixing it up with Sawyer and defying Locke’s orders. Getting Miles some face time with Ben resulted in an awkward extortion attempt—for the strangely specific amount of $3.2 million in cash, Miles agreed to mislead his employer into believing that Ben is already dead. However, Miles ended up with the short end of the stick as John went to some rather extreme measures to keep him from talking. (Yes, I would say that a live grenade is an excellent incentive to keep your mouth shut.)
As for last week’s island escapees, Jack and the gang on the beach waited impatiently for word from Sayid and Desmond. However, nearly a day after their departure, no response had come from the freighter. When Charlotte finally gave up the secret, “emergency” number, the woman on the other end of the line had no information about the helicopter or its occupants. So, is this another example of the island's apparent time distortions or has something terrible happened to the chopper?
Future Jack’s trial testimony was definitely revealing and certainly provided a window into what the world knows (and doesn’t know) about the Oceanic Six. In his testimony, Jack stated, “Only eight of us survived the crash.” (By the way, if six made it off the island, who are the two that allegedly died between the time of the crash and the rescue in this fairy tale?) He went on to sing Kate’s praises as a hero/savior in what really was more an account of how he had taken control of the situation. It is now confirmed that the Oceanic Six lied when they returned. But why? Did Locke’s group swear them to secrecy or is this a decision they make on their own to conceal the truth? I am certainly more understanding of why Jack devolves into an alcoholic, drug-popping mess and Hurley ends up in an asylum.
Why is Jack avoiding Aaron? Well, we know that Claire and Jack have a father in common. Or at least it appeared that way in the Claire-centric flashback (I am learning to take nothing for granted in the Lost universe.) But Jack has not yet learned of his connection to Claire in island time. Does future Jack know that Claire is his sister? Based on Claire’s fierce maternal instincts, as well as the warning she had previously received from the psychic, it is difficult to believe she would have willingly handed Aaron over while remaining behind on the island. So does Claire die? And if so, does Jack learn his connection to her at some point? And if he does, is Jack’s reluctance coming from his grief over Claire or guilt that he couldn’t help her or both? As I type this, my head is reeling from all the possible places the story could be going. It is why I say over and over again, I love this show.
Some other fun/interesting tidbits from tonight: —Josh Holloway's scrumptious Sawyer, shirtless in multiple scenes (always a welcome sight), flirting with Kate and back to calling her Freckles. —Locke, in response to Ben saying he had already read the book he selected: "You might catch something you missed the second time around." (It might just be me, but I felt like it was a wink to the fans to keep looking for clues.) —Hurley getting “Scooby Doo’d” by Kate. —Hurley and Sawyer as the next generation Odd Couple —Jin, on the beach with Sun, explaining why he learned English —Box o’wine and Xanadu? This island truly is a paradise!
If the previews are any indication, next week promises to be even more exciting than tonight. In the meantime, check out the Online Video Guide for more Lost clips and previews. And of course, keep the comments coming!

so why should we assume that Aaron is one of the 6? I would think that the six would only include people on the original manifold.
Minor Spoiler:
I think we'll only know about Kate, Sayid, Jack and Hurley (4 of the 6) for a while as there's not supposed to be any flashforwards for the next few episodes.

Hi, No one will believe me but this is the truth: I have thought that the "he" that Kate had to get back to in last season's finale was Aaron all along. My first thought back last May was that she took Claire's identity and that is how she didn't have to go to jail and how she had Aaron at the same time. I didn't know how she was going to pull it off but I thought that might be the reason for the covert meeting with Jack. But then when I started reading spoilers before tonight's episode about her being on trial, I just figured that she took Aaron to keep him safe. I hope that doesn't mean Claire is dead, though, because that would really suck. I like her! Two things to worry about/puzzle about: Aaron's age--about 3 years old, maybe a little younger, maybe a little older but how long has it been since the rescue? If it has been a couple of years, why is Kate just now going on trial? If they just got off the island, what happened on the island to keep them there 2 or 3 years longer? It boggles the mind. Also, part of this, how did they explain Aaron when they were rescued??? Second thing, Jack not wanting to see Aaron. He has to know it is Aaron, right? Is it guilt over Claire specifically or guilt over them having to lie and leave all of the others behind? Or is it something else? This show drives me crazy. Thanks, Trish for the blog! P. S. Thanks, LOST! Now Xanadu is stuck in my head-- I love Olivia but that is not one of my favorite songs of hers.

Trish - I gasped too. I know others had speculated about Aaron, and seeing his beautiful blond hair did make me wonder, but I still was shocked. I also wondered when Kate was remembering Claire wanting her to hold Aaron and she didn't want to. That scene seemed forboding to me. I have all the same questions as you written down. Does Jack know? When did he find out if he knows? Is Claire dead??!! Why does Kate have Aaron?
A big High Five to pinkie and others for catching that Kate was a mommy. Whoo Hoo! We figured something out!
Welcome aboard Happycamper20. I started like you. Lurking until I could contain myself no more. And I have made some wonderful friends on this blog (Hello my lovelies ~ Daesey, rosie, pinkie, justme, wheezy). We are obsessed (some more than others ::looks in mirror::), and we welcome you.
First a quick comment on last weeks epi that I noticed when watching the enhanced version. It really goes with tonights epi too.
Sawyer practically propsed to Kate.
K – how long can we play house? S – why don’t we find out?
Swoon
Thanks for catching the book Trish. It went by fast for me. I love Philip K. Dick (folks he did Total Recall and Minority Report - well the original short stories, not the movies) Guess who's going to the bookstore this weekend?
How interesting that they are now playing house in the Others compound. Shades of the future?
This may seem out of left field. I've never seen Big Love and I know I've seen Shawn Doyle elsewhere, but is she one of the people who worked w/ Sayid when it came to coercing him to infiltrate the terrorist group, and holding Nadia over his head? Didn't she put him on the plane to find Nadia? I'm sure I'm wrong, but for some reason that popped into my tired brain when I first saw her.
The boathouse looks creepy.
Only 8 survived and OMG the story Jack is spinning about the crash! I want to hear the entire fiction.
Does he really not love her anymore? Didn't think so with those tears in his eyes.
I broke out laughing when Miles tried to extort Ben. WTF dude? LOL to Ben looking shocked and then asking the question running thru my mind (and yours?) “Why 3.2 million? Why not 3.3 or 3.4?”
LOL to Miles telling Kate “This is hot.” When she slams him into the wall.
I was shocked to see her mom still alive. And Kate was heartbroken to find that she still had not won her mom's love. That her mom just wanted something from her. I'm glad she walked out.
Sawyer is yummy in bed reading a book. He is totally making me melt. “I’ll keep you safe. You can stay right here. I unbanish you.”
What are Daniel & Charlotte doing with those cards? Testing to see if their ESP is getting better? The island is suppose to enhance these qualities correct?
If I wasn't use to it by now I would be complaining about the Losties once again not asking questions. They are around these people for more than a day waiting to hear from Sayid and Desmond and NOBODY bothers to grill them? They just let them play card games? I would be right in their face demanding to know things. Jack is already suspicious. What was he doing all day while they were experimenting? I know you want off the island, but....ARG! Ask some questions!
OK - thanks for letting me get that out.
I loved when Locke said he is “responsible for the well being of this island.” The ISLAND ~ Not the PEOPLE on the island. HMMMMM.
Locke gave us a new catch phrase. “Enjoy your breakfast.” Yikes Locke is one tough dude. I thought he was going to go after Kate to make sure she left after he said that to Miles.
I think Miles has met his match, huh?
My heart broke when Sawyer gave Kate the wrong answer. Good for her whacking him when he said she would be back when p*ssed at Jack. He looked so hurt.
I look forward to the day ahead!

Hey, did anyone get a personal message from OceanicAir815 last week?
I did.
It gave me a link to a Hanso site and asked if I wanted more info, but was someone(?) who had just signed up and never posted.

I'll be the first to coin "Oceanic 6 + 2"
I do not think Aaron counts as a part of the Oceanic 6, as he was not on the plane. Aaron and Ben, however, might be the "+ 2".
Also, $3.2 million = 32, one of the numbers. Albeit that might be a stretch.

Hi. i'm new here. Since the episode ended I've been thinking how did Kate explained that Aaron was her son if she wasn't pregnant when the plane crashed. I know that time in the island is kind of different than outside, but I don't know. What do you think?

OK, I knew that it was going to be Aaron, but it was still jaw-dropping to see him as a toddler. If the past seasons have each lasted about a month, then will things move faster from now on? Will they end up on the island for several years? I can't imagine that it would take two years for Kate to be prosecuted once they get back.
I'm finding myself just as excited about the show as I was in the first season, because the flash-forwards make me wonder how they end up where they are. Why the lying about how many survived the crash and where they landed? As soon as Jack said that Edward Mars (the marshal) died in the crash, I knew that he was lying.
Now I want to know what happened to Claire--did she die, or stay on the island for some reason? But why would she stay without Aaron? Was Desmond's vision of Claire and Aaron getting on the helicopter really Kate and Aaron? Now I don't remember if he saw the hair of the woman, or just a blurry figure. How sad if Charlie's dying so Claire and Aaron can be saved was partially in vain.
Why does Miles want $3.2M? Who is his boss, and why does he want Ben? Say what you will about Jack, I think that he's a far better leader than Locke.
I told my husband tonight that I really don't get the people who are complaining that the show is bringing up more questions than answers; the difference to me is that we're fairly sure that we will get these answers. I consider watching Lost to be akin to reading a really engrossing novel of which we just can't skip ahead and read the ending. I feel sorry for those who gave up watching, because the show is truly exciting.

OMG I said it once and I'll say it again this is like Season 1 on crack, lol. I feel as if I have to play very close attention to every scene because I don't know when LOST will blow me away with a revelation, it feels like the first season when everything was new and exciting but now it's better because we already know our beloved characters. I liked how they addressed the Kate being a fugitive off the island issue but I'm very curious as to how exactly does she get to leave the island since it doesn't seem she'd have a reason to right now at island time and just because now she has to return to the beach it doesn't mean that's why she has to leave, I mean after all Hurley went on Locke's side and he left. On the last scene I was screaming "now show me Kate's son !!", my theory was that if he had blond hair it might be Sawyer's and if not it might be Jack's, but then they showed the blonde child and I didn't care about that, all of the sudden it hit me that it might be Aaron, then Kate said those magic words

Hi again, I forgot something that is so . . . well, Lost like. Kate's lawyer, Duncan, was played by Shawn Doyle who was a cop in the movie "Frequency" (which is kind of about time travel). His character's name in "Frequency" . . . Jack Shepard! Is that crazy or what? By the way, the other lawyer/DA was played by Susan Gibney and she used to be the DA on "Crossing Jordan." IMDB says this is her first time on "Lost."

Zinger314, 32 isn't one of the numbers. 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.
As for Aaron not being one of the Oceanic 6 because he wasn't on the manifest, I can see it both ways. No, he didn't have a ticket, but he was obviously rescued from the crash of Oceanic 815.

My big burning question is how Kate got such a big house with a nanny and her nanny wasn't all that surprised to see her!

mandysellers, the big house came from the settlement that she got from Oceanic. Kate or her lawyer called the nanny to let her know that she'd be home.
Interesting that Kate jumped at signing the agreement not to leave the state for 10 years (is that a usual thing in a plea agreement?) Did she want to be sure that there was no way that she could go back to the island?

The Oceanic Six all got a huge sum of money from Oceanic Airlines so presumably Kate used the settlement money to buy the nice house.

Did Kate kill her mother's husband, the man who turned out to be her real father, in Los Angeles?? Kate made a deal with the prosecutor to "stay." Jack said he had to go back to the hospital, which is in LA. And other flash forwards are suppose to take place in and near LA, so I'm assuming the trial was in LA, but I can't figure out why.
