Episode Recap: Confirmed Dead
If last week’s episode left me emotionally drained and thirsty for more, tonight’s episode left me completely baffled, slightly annoyed and, as always, thoroughly intrigued. (Oh, and it has to be said, sick to death of the seemingly endless commercial breaks.)
Where to begin? First, I have to give props to the posters from last week who guessed that Naomi’s dying words were, in fact, a code to her team. Apparently, “Tell my sister I love her” really meant “Someone is holding a gun to my head and I am in grave danger.” Despite all of that, it still won’t surprise me if Naomi has more than one connection to our friends on the island.
Tonight’s episode kicked off with the discovery of Oceanic Flight 815—or what appeared to be Oceanic Flight 815—deep in the waters off the coast of Bali. On our slowly emerging timeline, those remains were likely being discovered around the same time that Jack was telling everyone about living together or dying alone on the beach.
As the various survivors set off on their respective journeys toward or away from rescue, we were introduced to some new folks—Daniel (Jeremy Davies), Miles (Ken Leung), Charlotte (Rebecca Mader) and Frank (Jeff Leahy). Or, as Namoi summed it up, “A head case, a ghostbuster, an anthropologist and a drunk.” Daniel was the first to drop in (pardon the pun) and his jittery, unfocused explanations did not sit well with Jack and Kate. They were especially unnerved that their rescue was not, as he put it, his team’s primary objective. Daniel's introduction was framed by a flashback to his inexplicably emotional reaction to the discovery of Flight 815.
Soon after Jack and Kate encountered Daniel, the trio located Miles, a hothead who initially doubted their story about Naomi’s death. However, we soon learned that Miles has a rather unique gift—he is able to summon and communicate with the spirits of the dead. A few moments with Naomi’s body and he believes Jack and Kate’s story that it was fellow survivor John Locke who was responsible for her demise. Still unwilling to drop their weapons, Daniel and Miles are soon surprised to find that Sayid and Juliet have tracked down their friends and are providing much-needed back-up. (I especially enjoyed Kate and Juliet’s wry smiles when Jack was surprised that Kate was unable to read his winking signal.)
We also got a flashback to Naomi tonight, alive and well and being recruited for a dangerous mission by none other than last week’s creepy, fake Oceanic Airlines representative. (Speaking of Hugo/Hurley’s mysterious visitor, I noticed in the replay of last week’s episode that he did indeed appear to leave a trail of black smoke as he stole away. Another great catch that a lot of you made. So cool!) Naomi’s goal? To lead her team of aforementioned misfits out of the mission alive, assured by creepy guy that “There were no survivors of Oceanic 815.”
While Locke’s group contended with Ben’s mind games and Sawyer's quick temper, they came across Charlotte, who innocently claimed to be part of their rescue team. But Ben seemed to know better and swiftly tried to remove the threat, stopped only by Charlotte’s bullet proof vest. In Charlotte’s past, we learned that she has had some experience with polar bears—something that might be helpful on this particular island. Meanwhile, Jack and Kate’s growing crew met up with Frank, the pilot for the rescue team, who was injured, but lucid enough to know that Juliet's name was not on Flight 815's passenger list. In Frank’s flashback, we see him calling the hotline set up for families of Oceanic 815 passengers, refuting the pilot’s identity and admitting that he was supposed to pilot the fateful trip.
Questions, questions and more questions. What does this particular team want with Ben? If they weren’t looking for survivors, why was their mission seemingly instigated by the crash. Are these other Others really as dangerous as Ben thinks or are there even more dangerous people on the way? Did Locke really see a giant Walt and if so, did the island speed up his puberty or what? And where the heck is Michael?
What are your burning questions? Are you, like me, having your own flashback to last season's first six episodes where we got a big dose of new characters and not enough of our favorites? Do you like the added layers and new mysteries? Are you just happy to go along for the ride? No matter what kind of Lost fan you are, one thing is certain—only six episodes left (at least for now). Where will the island take us next?

I'm 99.9% positive that the news reporter on the TV is indeed Tricia Tanaka (of the epynoumous episode "Tricia Tanaka is Dead"), who was killed last season in Hurley's flashback when a meteor hit his restaurant. Hmm. I guess she's not that dead.
Otherwise, the only purpose of the episode was to introduce the four new characters. It succeeded...I guess?

I am convinced that Michael is the inside man on the boat.
thoughts?

It's too bad that Jack's group and John's group didn't keep those conveniently-forgotten walkie-talkies. Just call them up and say "they just want Ben".
And Ben knew ALL about it. That man gives devious a bad name.
Next week we learn the identity of the 4th member of the Oceanic 6 - now we've been assuming that means that only survive or return, but maybe it means that 6 of them go on a speaking tour together after the return to civilization. Or they were co-plaintiffs in a huge lawsuit against Oceanic (represented no doubt by Eli Stone, nertworks love tie-ins).

A person guided by hallucinations?
No, silly, that's John Locke!

I don't even know why, but this was one of my favorite episodes ever. I can't even explain it lol... I just loved all four new characters. The polar bear w/ the collar in the desert, the original pilot of 815. Dan seems like a good guy, actually, I'm interested to see what side he ends up on. Our only introduction to him was crying ("I don't know" why) at the news about 815. All four characters are great additions to the show, which is not easy to do at this point. The landscapes were great tonight after an all-nighttime-episode last week. Good to hear Locke mention the Walt thing, and that he was "taller", so they're definitely not pretending he's the same age. I liked the premiere, but this episode really kicked off the season for me.
What did Ausiello not like about this epi?!?!

Speaking of Ausiello, he said there would be something hysterical but subtle between Jack & Kate... I'm clueless, sorry. Could someone please fill me in?

Random points and thoughts about tonight's episode, which I loved, although it somewhat scrambled my brains ...
Trish, Locke did not see a "giant" Walt, but in last season's finale, while lying in the mass grave of Dharma mummies, he was visited by a Walt that had clearly hit an adolescent growth-spurt and was taller and ganglier than the boy that had been kidnapped. He's the one who motivated Locke away from death and told Locke he had a lot of work to do.
Is it just me, or is Jeff Fahey bearing an amazingly strong resemblance to Sean Connery, circa about 15 years ago as he started to let himself be nicely grizzled-looking. I found him very hot in this persona.
Speaking of Jeff Fahey and his character Frank Lapidus, feeling like I'd heard the word lapidus in another pursuit, and knowing that the Lost team never chooses character names just for the heck of it, I did a little checking. Darned if lapidus is a granite-based stone from Brazil often used as kitchen and bathroom counters in homes. It is heavily veined of mixed colors, with one type mainly of taupe, amber, white and brown with black streaks, another type is beige with hints of sea blue with orange and black 'leopard spotting'. The last type is light yellow-colored stone with the same color leopard spotting and light grey highlights that can look blue.
I'm sure that's more than you'd ever want to know about lapidus, but if you ponder the qualities of the stone, I think we get a clue to the character himself.
One last point... did anyone else note the different looks that Hurley got from Locke and Ben when he slipped and mentioned the cabin, revealing to both of them that he, too, was capable of seeing it and/or being ALLOWED by Jacob to see it? It strongly suggests that Hurley has whatever the "it" is that makes Ben more able to communicate with Jacob and the island; an "it" that he was so jealous of that he tried to kill Locke once Ben realized Locke had "it", too. If I were Hurley, I'd stay well away from Ben!

We all know how Lost likes to play the name game...Charlotte Staples Lewis = C.S. Lewis, author of "Chronicles of Narnia", famous for his religious imagery!
Daniel's last name is Faraday - as in Michael Faraday, the famous physicists.
Other theories being bandied about across the internet:
The polar bear is part of a Dharma time travel experiment and Charlotte was there to confirm it worked.
There may have been numerous Dharma Initiatives going on for years all across the globe.
When 815 crashed it was split apart in a time warp - one version of the plane landed on the island, another somewhere else. (I'm more in the camp that thinks the televised crash is a plant by someone.)
Can't take credit for this, but it's worth sharing: "The helicopter pilot's last name was Lupides, right? [Someone] said that there's a line in the Woody Allen movie, Sleepers, that refers to a "Mr. Lupides who was struck by lightning". That movie had something to do about a man waking up from cryo in....the future."
Hmm...fuel for thought.

nicolcious - Michael as Ben's inside man is a good theory, but I'm leaning more towards Sam. Who is Sam? He's the only person on the boat who is not part of the mission. www.find815.com

I think the something hysterical but subtle between Jack and Kate was the wink he gave her trying to tell her that things would be OK, but I don't know for sure.
What I liked the best, which shows that she does love Jack (not saying she doesn't love Sawyer, too) but at the beginning after Daniel gets done explaining about the transponders showing up on the phone, he asks for help and Jack says, "Absolutely." Kate just smiles at Jack and the look on her face said, "Oh, I love this man! Here we are in danger from this weirdo guy and he (Jack) is still ready and willing to help him find his people." I don't know--it just struck me as one of those moments.
What's the deal with a polar bear with a Dharma Initiative collar being found in the desert?
Also, I don't think anybody has said anything but Fisher Stevens' name has been in the credits this week and last and I finally figured it out--he is the voice of George Minkowski, who is on the freighter. I love that guy.

What is the monster? What? The black smoke monster!! Love it...we're finally going to get some answers to questions that I thought were long gone and forgotten about the island and Dharma. What is the monster and what is the polar bear doing on the island?

Wow for Lost a lot happened in this episode. Guess this is the new and improved Lost that doesn't have 22 episodes to screw around with. Actually its smart to put in little tidbits about the so called rescuers instead of dragging it out over weeks like the whole "pod" early last season. We learned a ton of info (including what the world thinks of 815s fate) but didn't have to site through 4 tedious flashbacks to get there. Although I'm really intrigued by the Anthropologist story... polar bear, Dharma, wtf!? I think you are right about the man on the boat being Michael. We know the actor is coming back to the show so it makes a lot of since.

I can’t believe that no one has yet gone off on Naomi, the Jason Voorhees of LOST Islanders. (Or maybe I missed it. If I missed it. My bad. I’ll do my penance over at the *shudder* fuselage) First, this chick gets a knife thrown into her back, so hard that she’s spitting up blood. Understandably she falls to the ground “dead.” Jack, the mighty surgeon, checks to see if she’s dead by sort of feeling her back. Then she lays there “dead” while everyone has a “we’re going to be saved” picnic and talks about how keen babies are like five feet from a recently deceased corpse with a knife stuck in it like an appetizer. People say a whole bunch of nothing and take too long to say it and then “WHA-OH” she’s gone… So, we’re then shown that somehow Miss Voorhees has managed to run away without notice, create TWO trails to really befuddle them, shimmy up a tree like a puma, lie in wait for an unsuspecting Lostie to wander by and then is still somehow able to summon the strength necessary to pounce on the always obnoxious Kate, wrestle her, WIN, then hold a knife to her throat. ALL AFTER HAVING BEEN SKEWERED WITH A HUNTING KNIFE. Of course, the magic of LOST Island runs out just… as… she… makes… her… last… breathless… phone… call… *sigh* If that wasn’t enough to prove to everyone how asinine this show is at this point… Nothing is...
