Episode Recap: Cabin Fever

“How do I save the island?” Apparently, that was the question that needed to be asked and now Locke has received his direction—move the island. Who was giving the orders you ask? Not Jacob, but Christian Shephard. For months now, I’ve been thinking that Jacob—whoever or whatever he is—was using Christian’s corpse as a vessel. And yet tonight, when John met up with him in the cabin, Christian came right out and introduced himself. So is he dead? An apparition? And why does Claire seem so freaking calm after having effectively abandoned Aaron in the jungle? Is she dead?

I have to admit that the first half of this episode left me pretty cold, but things certainly heated up in the last 20 minutes. I think my issue is that I am still not feeling the freighter angle or Michael’s re-entry into the fray. And frankly, with the exception of Frank who appears, for now, to have good intentions, the freighter folk haven’t given us much to like. Case in point, the cold-blooded Martin Keamy added two more to his body count tonight and it would have been three if the gun would have allowed him to shoot Michael. (Though we all knew that wasn't going to happen.) The action on the freighter took a deadly turn as the ship’s doctor and captain met their untimely deaths. Now that we’ve learned how the doctor ended up dead in the water, the question that remains is how the heck did he wash up on the beach before he actually died on the boat? I’m also not convinced that we’ve see the last of the captain.

Tonight’s episode also delved even further into Locke’s past—his rebellious teenage mother whose dalliance with an unnamed older man led to his conception; his premature birth; his detached childhood and frustrating, self-doubting adolescence; and, most importantly, his encounters with the Dorian Gray-like Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) and the equally mysterious Matthew Abbadon. I was thoroughly confused by the test that John had to somehow pass to be “accepted” to Richard’s school and why Richard reacted so abruptly to John’s selection of the knife. I did enjoy the interplay between Locke and Abbadon, who turned up as an orderly at John’s post-accident rehab facility. His hopeful advice to John about not giving up hope seemed to be a stark contrast to his earlier appearances with Hurley and Naomi. I am hoping that his motives turn out to be more good than bad, but his suggestion of a walkabout for John leads me to believe that someone knew about (or even triggered) the fatal crash that was to come.

Ben’s declaration that “Destiny, John, is a fickle bitch,” certainly seemed to ring true. As a guy who has dealt with more than his share of betrayal, disappointment, and physical pain, it now seems like it was all leading John to the island. Whether or not he is actually meant to replace Ben remains to be seen, but that certainly seems to be the case for now.

With all the gloom and impending doom, I was happy for a light-hearted moment as Hurley shared his candy bar with Ben. Seeing his spirit and heart on the island makes it even harder to think about the bleak future for him that we saw laid out last week as he seemingly dips into a depressed and defeated shell of himself. Is there some hope that the strange time-space issues might allow for some change in future circumstance? Or is Ben right and destiny will have its way like a pre-determined chess game. In the next few weeks, I think that answer will become clearer.

So what did I miss tonight? How does Abbadon fit in this puzzle and how is Richard Alpert traveling through time, untouched by its usual ravages? What's Christian's role in all of this and what's going on with Claire. Make sure to post your thoughts, your guesses and your comments so we can keep this party going right down to the last minute of the last hour of this fantastic season.

Great recap, Trish.
So many questions and not enough answers in tonight's episode. But at least we know they will come eventually.
Claire not only seemed calm, but she was totally out of character.....not at all like herself, so IS she herself?
After last week's thriller, I was also a bit under-whelmed by the first half tonight. But with the ending making it clear that Locke is meant to save/move the Island, the b/g info on him was necessary. I'm so confused about the freighter timeline and other than Des and Sayid, I don't really care about any of the freighter folks, so I much prefer seeing action on the Island or the flash forwards. But I'll be patient and wait for all the blanks to be filled in.
It does appear that the plane crash was necessary to get Locke on the Island.....so are the rest of them there for a purpose or just victims of circumstance? Some, like Claire and Aaron, also seem to be a part of THE PLAN. And was Christian meant to be there or is his body just being used since it came with the plane?
So many questions......each one begets another.

I thought Richard was immortal and ageless, not that he travels through time. (which is evident when young-Ben met Richard.)

I'm annoyed by the time paradox in the episode. The doctor had turned up on the island short in the past, then after they sent the message to the ship, then they killed him. The latter action would not have happened if the previous action did not happen. Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory would not approve.

I'm aware of time travel, but I do not approve of breaking the space-time continuum.

Hey guys! I have been on vacation. Didn’t really do anything except hang out and relax. And celebrate my 20th anniversary. How it can be IDK since I am not that old! HA!

So here are a few thoughts on last weeks epi.

Wow that was quite a Kate Jack kiss as he grabbed her butt!

The bodies are gone, but Miles feels the spirits of Danielle and Karl! So they are both dead!! That makes me sad. Can you imagine Rousseau finding out Alex was dead? I would like to have seen her whip some Keamy arse.

Bernard was wearing too much eye liner.

Be still my heart Sawyer protecting Claire and the baby.

I won’t take up time and space referring to last weeks comments, except the one about Miles being fascinated with Claire. I don’t think that anyone thought what I did. That he was really fascinated with Aaron. He wanted to hold him even to help Claire out but she told him she could manage. Now maybe that was because she was dead and he was afraid the baby would just fall, but I don’t think so. We all know that Aaron has to be special, and maybe Miles could see something about him that he couldn’t stop looking at, and maybe he thought holding the baby would bring that into a clearer vision for him. Miles doesn’t seem the type to offer to hold the baby to help out Claire, he would only offer to hold the baby if it would help him.

And one more thing, courtesy of Justme. Since I didn’t see this either she pointed out (from her many hours of watching Ghost Facers ~ I mean Hunters ~ hi SN FANS!) that ghosts will suck up electricity in their surroundings to help manifest power, and she felt that was why the smoke detector was going off when Jack saw his dad. Can’t just be a coincidence about Smokey though.

And one more thing before this weeks epi. I have discovered the joy of watching LOST online and as I rewatched the end of S2, when the gentlemen in the artic discover the island due to Des turning the failsafe key, one of them says, “We missed it again!” AGAIN! So that made me wonder just a bit! When was the other time? What happened? Could that have been the incident that caused them to press the button ever 108 minutes? Or was it something after that? And I miss Eko.

OK, tonights show.

How could that tiny girl be pregnant? She had a tiny waist when she was twirling to Buddy Holly, then she gets hit by a car and is having a baby. WTF?! Just how premature was Locke? And did someone try and take out the mom so he wouldn't be born?

And Locke’s dad is twice as old as his teenage mom. Who is his dad? Richard!!???! WTF! Hmmmmm, I am thinking of that lovely scene where Richard said the view never gets old, and he handed Locke the file that lead to Sawyer killing the con man. Richard has known Locke a very long time. Why doesn't Locke remember him?

What an interesting vision with Horace. It seemed to be a loop didn’t it? He was cutting down the same tree. I thought for a moment he would repeat himself even.

So this school filled with special kids like Locke are they Richard's progeny? (that would be if he is Locke's father, why couldn't he be the father of a bunch of Other kids too?)

Little Locke drew a pix of Smokey getting him. Isn't that interesting?

Is John Locke reincarnated?

Walt’s comic. Was that Regina's book? I should know who's compass that is, but can't think? Did Ben have that at one point? I'm sure a bunch of us can put our heads together and figure out what items belonged to who.

I thought the knife was Locke’s too. Is it the one he used to kill Naomi with?

Anyone have any idea which one of the items was Lockes?

The captain should fix Keamy’s gun so it blows up in his face.

Did we find out what was on Keamy's arm? Did I miss that?

Destiny is a fickle bitch. Sounds like a good name for a book, or a movie, or a blog.

Abbadon (he is soooo creepy, and gosh, I really thought he was going to test Locke by throwing him down those stairs.) said, "Go into the wilderness with a knife and his wits. The knife, which wasn’t his to pick. HMMMMMMM

Look at the missles they want to take to the island. Sheesh! It's going to turn into a war.

The knife is back as Keamy uses it to kill the doc. (not the same knife, but still ~ a knife)

The knife which wasn't Locke's to pick.

I need someones help with wrapping my mind around the docs death. The doc washes ashore, there is a morse code message on the boat about the doc while he is still alive, then Keamy kills him and throws him overboard. How? Help? Someone?

Jack is healing fast. The island is healing him fast. Could the fast healing be why he doesn’t even have a scar? Isn’t it a good sign that he is hungry?

OMG here comes that copter, RUN!!!!!!

Who thought it was a missle flying out? I thought so. I wonder where they are going, and why Frank wants them to follow? So they know what they are getting into? So they have a warning, and are not just sitting ducks on the beach?

Ben hands leadership over to Locke? I would totally want to go in and find out WTF has been going on. I would have led the way for Locke!

What’s up with Claire. She kinda freaked me out. And I think she could be dead. I completely agree Darcy that she was completely out of character.

Hurley shares with Ben! Hurley is AWESOME ~ he could easily be Barney's new bro! (sorry wrong show)

He wants us to move the island!!!! What?!

God, I don’t want this show to ever end, but I can’t wait at the same time!

P.S. Some commented on Jack being in Speed Racer, but he is Racer X! The diff is a black body suit!

I don't think that Frank threw that Sat phone down so that Jack and the rest would follow them. I was assuming that he did it so that they all knew when and where to hide from Keamy and his soldiers. Frank just wanted to keep them one step ahead of 'em all, IMO.

Jack did have a scar in last week's fast forward. You could see it in the mirror. I made a point to look.
And the doctor getting killed had nothing to do with the morse code. Keamy killed the doctor and Keamy wasn't there when the other guy questioned the doctor about the morse code message. Keamy came walking up afterward then slit the doctor's neck.

Cubbieblue - so they wouldn't be sitting ducks, right! That Frank may be the one to save the day.

Zinger ~ I don't see why Richard being around when Locke is a kid disproves that he is immortal/ageless. It actually reinforces that idea for me.

Please explain your paradox to me a bit more. I am still confused about the entire thing. And please, not like Sheldon would! hehe

Okay, PEOPLE! I can't be the first to put two and two Emilys together ... John Locke's birth mother is named Emily. It's the 50's, she's a teenager. In the 60's, Ben Linus's mother EMILY (older, in her 20's) gives birth to him (Ben) in the woods... Am I crazy or are John Locke and Ben half-brothers??

Somebody quick set me straight if I am wrong! (I imdb'd Carrie Preston's character's name on LOST and it WAS Emily!)

countryqueen you make some interesting points (I didn't even realise that the items belonged to other people already). I have a different take on the knife though. It is his knife and always has been. When Richard asked him to choose and he chose that, it indicated to him which role he would play on the island, whatever it is. Perhaps he knew that he wasn't ready to go to the "special school" (which I'm convinced is the island). He was supposed to go later after life experiences made him the way he was. I dunno, just a thought.

As for moving the island... that explains why Hurley and Jack have received special visitors. They know where it was moved. I wonder if that means that Kate, Sayid, or Sun don't help move the island because I don't remember any of them saying that they have to go back to the island. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And Claire... creepy. I'm not sure if she's dead or not but it would make sense if she is and that's why she belongs there. Or she's not and she just belongs on the island. But not Aaron? Did one of those items belong to Claire? Jack? Hurley? Maybe that's whose items they belong to... those who are supposed to be there.

And the whole time paradox thing. I wonder if that's how they'll move the island. Not in place, but in time. In last weeks episode, it was as if Ben showed up in the middle of nowhere... he even made a point to ask what year it was. And how the body of the doctor washed up on shore before he died on the boat. Are they making the island go back in time? Is that how Richard got those items and he was able to go talk to young Locke? Maybe he is immortal. Maybe he is the "time keeper" of the island.

I think I've rambled enough.

He questioned because of the Morse Code

Sequence of events:

1. Jack finds doctor on island
2. Ship receives morse code
3. Shipmate asks about morse code, Keana kills doctor

2 causes 3, 3 causes 1, 1 causes 2. Ergo, by transitive, 1 could cause 3. That's impossible, ergo time paradox.

I'm likely wrong, but it's odd.

The more I see, the less I understand! No wonder I watch each episode several times and read all the blogs! Whoever said that Jacob (or the man in the cabin) was a Christian is a genius!! It is CRAZY!!!!
Can't wait for next week!!!
I think Claire is dead! I think the theory about Ben and John being related is interesting, but I don't think it is true!

Ben's mother died when giving birth but Locke's mother was still alive years after as we saw in one of Locke's flashbacks. That's unless the lady that said that she was Locke's mother was an impostor. We do know that she was nutty. So everything fits as far as timelines, but only if the Emily played by Swoosie Kurtz wasn't the real Emily.

Both moms having the same name may mean what you said or may just show that both men have yet another thing in common besides just their destinys on the island, in this case mothers with the same name as opposed to their mothers being the same person.

It's not the first time that more than once character has shared a name. Tom was an other but also the name of Kate's childhood sweetheart. Tommy is the name of Aaron's father. Jason was the name of an other, Kate's boyfriend who robbed the bank, the man who Ana Lucia shot, etc. Michael is a lostie and Mike is the name of someone from Locke's flashback. I'm sure that there are other examples.

The difference between those examples and the Emily ones is that the two Emily's are similar while the other examples were not similar. So I do think that Ben and Locke being half brothers would be great but again that depends on the true identity of Emily Locke from season one.

LawCat~You made me think that the items that Richard asked Locke to choose were like picking out the pieces you play a game with (top hat/doggie etc. from Monopoly). I think you have an excellent point about him not being ready! Richard seemed disappointed, esp. since he left so fast.

suzybaby - excellent catch! So many have been trying to give Ben a twin, and then it gets pointed out that we saw his birth, but you have hit on something that is very interesting.

And what if Richard settles for Ben running things until Locke is ready? I'm not sure Locke is ready yet, but maybe his is finally getting his stuff together.

I kinda wonder what would have happened if Locke had embraced his scientific side.

Moving the island in time might explain why the doc washes up dead and is then alive. And that would also explain why in the future Widmore can't find it anymore. Because the bearing of 3.25 is no longer corrrect.

Dixiebelle - think you may be misunderstanding about the morse code. It does have to do with the docs death, in that it presents us with a huge question! The doctor washes ashore, the island people send a morse code asking about it, they try to lie, but Bernard tells us that they say the doc is alive. That was last week. This week, we see the doc, we here the morse code and then we see the one guy tell the doc it said he was dead. Then Keamy walks up and kills him. So the morse code gives us a sort of timeline about his death. Plus, we get to see him told about it before it actually happens. Maybe we are just misunderstanding each other. LOL

So Abaddon plants the idea in Locke's head to go into the Australian outback with just a knife - a knife, singular, yet for some reason the man takes the whole cutlery department from Rambo's Military Surplus. I think our boy has a bit of trouble following directions. And now he has to move the island. No problem, surely there's a steering wheel or a rudder somewhere convenient. And everybody can just get into the water and push real hard.

Great job of casting the younger versions of Locke. They looked convincingly like him and each other.

Prediction: Jack will encounter Christian and learn about Claire. Sawyer will have 10 new nicknames for Aaron by the time he reaches the beach, but only one or two will be usable on TV.

Great recap, but there really isn't any mystery about Locke's father -- it's the original Sawyer, who is now dead (by James "Sawyer" Ford's hands). That's why he conned Locke into donating his kidney in the first place -- he knew that he would be a match.
