Episode Recap: “Ride Along”
Now that was a well-done episode. I don’t think the crime or its perpetrator are unique to New Orleans but the twist about a New York reporter coming down to do an expose and actually admiring the boys in blue is. Good job. I’m not sure when we’re going to get a fresh episode so I’m glad the series ended the year with a bang.
Let’s peel back the layers and see what emerges. First we’ve got Captain Embry trying to please his boss by making Boulet and Cobb to a ride along with the New York reporter. They protest at first but the guys got into a kind of rhythm with Jodi Mazetta that was fun to watch. I enjoyed her asking questions and having things explained that normally wouldn’t be. Or seeing tactics the police pursue to get the information they need. I thought they’d get into trouble when “questioning” those two young guys on the hood of the car while Jodi took notes and snapped photos. I also liked how she questioned Boulet and Cobb’s tactics with Hayley. I think it gives us an even better understanding of how cops work in general and how Boulet and Cobb work in particular. And I think her coming clean about outsiders interest in N.O.’s lawlessness and corruption really lit a fire under Boulet and Cobb to show her how hard they are working to bring law and order back to the Big Easy.
The case: Caveman, a local lawbreaker who is one of the worst criminals in the city, keeps executing witnesses to his crimes before they can testify. When Travis Frederick is killed in what appears to be a drug-related dispute, Boulet and Cobb quickly determine the crime is a “homicide” and not a “killing.” Boulet and Cobb soon find out Travis witnessed a killing by Caveman and was prepared to testify. But the only person Travis talked to was a cop and there is no way the information could have reached Caveman unless a mole in the department gave him the info. Now, not only do they have to worry about someone in their squad being dirty but if there is an internal investigation, Cobb’s secrets won’t stay secret for long.
After spending time with Boulet and Cobb and determining for herself that they’re good guys, Jodi tells them she’ll write a positive piece. She believes they’ve got the city’s best interests at heart and she wants to show the rest of the world there are good cops in N.O. But Boulet and Cobb are surprised when her story turns into a front-page expose on how they drink on the job and chase cats around the city instead of criminals. But before that even happened she became persona non grata when she gave away their position during a raid.
Jodi admits to them her editor re-wrote the piece but she thinks it’s all part of paying her dues and getting published. When the re-written story results in one of Marlon’s C.I.’s (confidential informants) being executed by Caveman, Jodi vows to quit her job and demand a retraction. But that’s not going to bring Nicky back. Now, not only do Cobb and Boulet have to worry about the continued bad press the department will get from Jodi’s piece but they may not be able to get Caveman for Travis’s murder as his girlfriend Hayley is too scared to testify. She’d rather spend time in jail than leave her son orphaned. And the episode ends with no real resolution except that the cat gets a new home with Cobb.
As I said before, a very good episode. I’m glad things were left unresolved as to whether or not there is a dirty copy and whether or not Caveman will pay for his other crimes. On a completely different note, I also liked all the shots of New Orleans. It looks like the show is shot in the city instead of on a soundstage, which I think really helps with authenticity. Cobb and Boulet continue to work well together and I enjoy to see their relationship continue to develop. They’ve got an easy rapport that I think gets the job done. I feel like Boulet has mellowed a bit, which is a very good thing. And someone mentioned the fact that Cobb doesn’t drink. He might be an alcoholic but I think it could also be the need to be in control at all times. If he slips up while he’s drunk and tells the wrong person about his past he could be in real trouble.
What did you think? I’m not sure how many episodes were done before the strike but I think we’re nearing the end of original episodes. I haven’t heard anything about a pick-up but I’ll let you know if and when I do.
In the meantime, feel free to check out our Online Video Guide for more on K-Ville.

As a former journalist, I think the newspaper industry was misrepresented a bit. I know editors have a certain story angle in mind when they give reporters assignments, but to totally rewrite this non-breaking news story without the reporter's final ok isn't how it's done at good newspapers. There's usually more give-and-take with the story rather than a reporter being blindsided by the entire story in print.
But in the grand scheme of things, unless you're in the media, which I'm assuming most blog readers here aren't, it was a good episode.
I hope K-ville gets picked up for another season, especially if it can follow Prison Break.

This was the last original episode. It only received an order for two additional scripts but then the strike happened. So unless the strike ends, we might not have anymore fresh episodes of K-Ville to enjoy. I really hope FOX will keep this show on the air - I am really enjoying it. Anthony and Cole have alot of chemistry and I like the partnership of Cobb and Boulet. While I enjoyed this episode, I have to say I was bugged that an editor of a major newspaper would published details about a CI. Any journalist would know how important a CI is to police and maintaining their cover is important. Also didn't the editor compromise Boulet by publishing his picture? I know Cobb mentioned he couldn't have his picture taken because of his undercover work but wouldn't that apply to Boulet as well?
LOL about Cobb and his "magic hands." I was really amused after he fell through the roof all Boulet was worried about was the cat!

WOW - that was a fantastic episode. One great hour of TV.
I really enjoyed everything - nothing over-the-top, very tight story, great acting. I wish the show would have started out this strong.

Now that's the kind of episode I want to see. Well done all around.
I thought that early in the season Cobb mentioned overcoming substance abuse problems and that's why he doesn't drink.

I don't know how much sound stage they use or where, but K-Ville is shot in New Orleans, and it was intentional. If they were going to do a show about New Orleans post-Katrina, it only made sense to film there. Nice revenue for the city, realistic footage.
And, for those of us no longer there, we get to see a little bit of home...

One big question: How did the editor re-write the story? Where did he get all the little details unless the reporter told the editor? You can't re-write the story and get it totally correct if you don't know who did what to whom, when and how.

I really enjoyed this episode and thought it was one of the best of the show. I am sad this is the last new episode. I really hope this show does not get canceled. It is very different from any other police show on TV today. I also agree that the two leads have a great chemistry with each other and really complement each other.

Thedew, the reporter said she sent her notes with the story -- which is not typical, at least at the newspapers I've worked for -- and he rewrote the article with all of the details.
Plus, again it goes back to the show's writers not knowing what happens in newsrooms, you might rewrite or change something in a reporter's story, but that editor better be 100 percent sure that any change is accurate, especially on a feature story that doesn't have a time element. Holding a story for one day to double-check for accuracy with the reporter is the prudent way rather than rewriting the story without confirming what is written with the reporter.
Now, one thing I should say is that the reporter could have told the cops one thing (changing the focus to "good cops") but actually was responsible for what appeared in printed. It would be easier to blame the editor or copy editor to take the heat off of her.

I too am sad that this was the last original episode. I really enjoy the show and hope it comes back post-strike. I love that New Orleans is shown so much. The city is a character of it's own.

I live in New Orleans and the show is definitely shot in the city. In fact that is what my mom and I do when watching the show, we try and guess what part of the city that is.

Great episode, GREAT SHOW...Please, if anyone is watching from the network, don't cancel this show! Love Cobb & Boulet, their chemistry, the fact that it's filmed in NOLA,the stories...supporting characters..so much more to delve into esp regarding Cobb's past. Loved the silly bits this time...the cat, etc.

I think I'm the one that originally posted that I thought he was an alcoholic and that he wasn't hanging with the gang after work because he was going to meetings. But now I think the not drinking thing has more to do with him being in complete control of his life and never wanting to be that 'other' guy ever again. I'd still like to know what he does with his time when not working though, since comments have been made about him not hanging around with the crew after hours.......kid or sick parents maybe? He grew up in NO, makes sense that his parents would still be there, and a kid is very possible also. I'm intrigued because I so dig Cole Hauser (I'd so like to go back in time and be a fly on the wall when him and Matthew McConaughey were playing naked stoned bongo's)
