Episode Recap: "Critical Mass"

I’m not a religious person. I didn’t grow up with it and I don’t attend church. That being said, I was really offended by how Boulet acted in church and towards Father Tom. Even if he thought Father Tom had a hand in killing his brother Troy, it was still over the top. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the episode. I just wanted Boulet to "pull back" like Cobb suggested.

Boulet is a complicated guy who doesn’t forgive easily. His ex-partner is finally being shown some level of respect by Boulet and I guess Cobb has also earned his respect. But tonight’s episode made one thing very clear: Do not get on Boulet’s bad side. You will regret it. And it’ll be even worse if Boulet really blames himself for the crime and just uses you as the scapegoat. I think he needs some serious therapy.

Boulet and Cobb respond to a 911 call from Boulet’s old church — he was baptized and married there — but now goes to a different church. The cops arrive in riot gear only to find the congregation going about their business, like it’s a normal Sunday. Further investigation leads to the body of Deacon Smith. Although all of the parishioners saw who committed the crime, no one is talking. When the police get a confession, they get two people admitting to the crime. Both Father Tom and juvenile delinquent Sean Riger confess to the shooting. Finally, Hazel, one of the parishioners, comes clean. Deacon Smith had been abusing her granddaughter Shania and when the opportunity presented itself, she rid the world of him.

This episode made me uncomfortable. I was squirming in my seat because of the level of disrespect Boulet dished out at the church. I was also disgusted with what Deacon Smith did to result in his death. But I guess that’s the mark of a good TV show. I do want my entertainment to also make me think and to question, so I’d say this was a pretty good episode. I didn’t see the end coming at all and I really liked that the congregation was willing to protect one of their own. Murder is a big deal (of course) and I don’t ever think we should take matters into our own hands but Hazel was just doing what she thought was right. She wanted to punish the man who made her granddaughter commit suicide.

What did you think of the episode? Was it too serious for you? Shocking?

I was way off base on this episode. I thought Boulet was mad at the priest for sexually abusing his brother, who then committed suicide. Thank goodness that wasn't the storyline.

And then I thought: why didn't the cops just use that spray to check the parishioners hands for gunshot residue? Hello--think CSI.

I'm glad it ended with Boulet coming to grips with reality that Father Tom wasn't at fault.

Finally, as a Catholic, I don't remember Masses that I've attended to be so lively and energetic with the priest singing and clapping near the pews. Maybe that's a Naw'lins thing.

Next week it's the baseball playoffs, and the following week it's due to a 2-hour episode of Prison Break.

I liked the episode but agree that Boulee was hard to like in the episode! He really was over the top and I was't thrilled with the way that he blamed the priest when it was not his fault. This is really one compicated guy!

As for the three week layoff - FOX does this every year. Prison Break, K-Ville, House & Bones always suffer!

What is with the media these days and these shows? Why is it ALWAYS a Catholic priest or religious like a deacon convicted of committing some heinous crime, and it's always the same old story. Can't they find another crime besides a priest sexually abusing someone in some way shape or form? I mean seriously. They are just portraying this negative stereotype and they just keep reiterating the exact same thing. Seriously, there are more sexual abuse crimes committed by normal people, it's just the media always portrays Catholic priests as doing everything. C'mon Fox, get a little bit of creativity!

I really like this show and I will miss it for the next three weeks. They didn't post its ratings today along with the other Monday shows. Does anyone know how it did? I was also glad that the priest did not end up being a bad guy.

The ratings just got listed and last night's show was up 13% from two weeks ago! That is good news. Let's hope the three-week break doesn't hurt the show too much. I hope they advertise it a lot during the baseball games.

Yes, this is very much a N'awlins thing. Even funerals are very musical events.

Love this show and I will miss it for the next 3 weeks!

The thing I noticed, having grown up Catholic was that apparently the guy who died was apparently trying to sell the church. If this is a Roman Catholic Church, the building is not the parish's or the priest's to sell. It belongs to the Diosese, or Archdiosese, in the case of New Orleans. It did bother me that Boulet was disrespectful in the church but that was more a plotline. The talk of somebody trying to sell a Catholic Church was too unreal.

I enjoyed this episode. It was nice to get more of an insight into Boulet's past. I will agree that my own conclusion ended up being wrong as well. While Boulet did act harshly and a little cruelly to Father Tom, I can understand why he was so bitter and pushy. I also like how the writers have included the other characters, and they each had a hand in figuring out the truth. Mostly I like how we see how well Boulet and Cobb balance each other out; and in the end, it is Cobb how is able to put the final pieces together to figure out the truth.

CSI doesn't have the most realistic demonstrations of police procedures. There is often reference to the CSI effect where prosecutors have a hard time making convictions without forensic evidence (which there usually isn't) because people watching CSI-esque shows assume there always is. In addition, even when forensic testing is available, it is often very expensive and time consuming. Also, logistically speaking, testing the hands shouldn't matter since she was wearing gloves.

Looks like my last comment got deleted, so I'll say it again: I was absolutely thrilled to see Michael O'Neill on here, as I've enjoyed his work in both The West Wing and 24. Maybe with Boulet trying to mend fences with Father Tom we'll see more of him. At least I wouldn't object to it.

I also hope we get to learn more about Glue Boy and Love Tap. I think that they're interesting people and now that we've had episodes about everyone else's past there's no reason we couldn't shine a little light on theirs, too. The two actors playing them are quite personable and I'd like to see their characters fleshed out a bit. I liked them a lot in this episode, and I liked that Embry got to be the one to tackle the perp...not something you might normally expect him to do! Usually on most shows the leader is a sort of guy who sits behind a desk, and I like that we can really believe this guy served his time and can still kick butt.

Not my favorite episode so far, but it was a good one and I definitely enjoyed it.

Boulet does know how to hold a grudge, doesn't he? It was kind of weird the way that he was behaving in the church, but it didn't make me uncomfortable
