Episode Recap: “Boulet in a China Shop”

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who noticed that there was something off in tonight’s episode. If I had to guess I’d say this episode was taped early in the season and it’s only seeing the light of day now. It seems like we’re still in the early stages of Boulet and Cobb’s relationship. My suspicions were confirmed (as least to my satisfaction) when Cobb called Boulet’s home and had to identify himself to Ayana using both his first and last name. Boulet was also riding Cobb pretty hard about his criminal past and it seems to me Boulet came to terms with that quite a few episodes ago.

But let’s move on to the case: A guy Boulet saved right after Katrina turns out to be a local racketeer.

Say what you will about his methods, Boulet gets results. I can’t condone what he does; I think I’d be horrified if I ever witnessed some of the things Boulet does. Despite that his methods seem to produce results. It would have been nice to have a longer transition between Boulet thinking Owen Giles was innocent to being convinced he was a thug. I did like Boulet hauling all those storeowners in for obstructing justice. I’m sure I’d be scared too if I had to deal with someone like Owen Giles but I’ll give it to Boulet for thinking of a creative way to get everyone into the station. Unfortunately the resources of D.A. Swann’s office are stretched to the limit and they can’t provide protection for the business owners.

Boulet, seeing that if justice is to be served he’ll have to do it himself, kidnaps Owen. Now I don’t care where you live, this is still the United States and Boulet would have gotten in trouble for that. He not only kidnaps him, he beats him up. How is it possible that Owen Giles didn’t press charges? How is it possible Boulet didn’t do anything to endanger the case against Owen Giles? I’m very happy Cobb got to Boulet before he did something really rash. Even if Boulet would have stopped himself because of his family, he needs to realize he’s acting like a crazy person. That might work for him in New Orleans, but he’s got to dial it down a bit.

And where the heck is Cobb spending all his free time? Boulet assumes it’s a woman but Cobb says it’s not. If I was Boulet and still new to partnering with Cobb I’d think he was out breaking the law. I’m not sure we’ll ever know what Cobb was doing. And there seemed to be a little moment of sexual tension between Swann and Cobb that again makes me think this episode is from earlier in the season.

I know I never really mention Love Tap and Glue Boy but they don’t really do enough for me to comment. I’d love some more character development on those two. I’d love some backstory. What inspired them to join the force? How were they affected by the storm? Do they even have personal lives?

What did you think of the episode? Was Boulet over the top or do you think he did what he needed to get justice for those shop owners? What do you think Cobb’s up to?

I'm thinking Cobb is at AA or NA meetings......first ep he wouldn't drink while on duty (understandable, but apparently normal in NOLA), won't go for drinks after work and when he does he's drinking out of a coffee mug....btw - love how he swaggered to the stage and then walked right through to the street and kept going.

Ok, maybe this episode being out of sequence was the problem. This episode made Boulet look like a hot-headed, dirty cop. Bad enough that he was thinking about taking the money out of the locker in the last episode, but now this? Ugh, I think I'm getting over this show.

Boulet is over the top like Andy Sipowicz was except Sipowicz didn't turn it off like Boulet does when he gets back to the station or at home.

With Sipowicz the anger didn't go away but barely under control in the station or home and Andy kept it under control in the streets, Boulet doesn't.

Cop Boulet and Dad Boulet are two different people, all the anger gone when he walks in the house and back again when he is on the street.

This disconnect with Cop and Dad Boulet makes Boulet more two dimensional rather than the three dimensional Sipowicz.

I agree - this one did seem a little off. And other than the scenery, this could have been a crime committed anywhere - not a crime unique to N.O. And that is what I have always loved about the show - that it is essentially a study of life in N.O. post Katrina. While they had a tie back to the storm - one rescue vs. the other, it seemed weak. I really hope this show returns once the strike is over though. People of N.O. love the show and the cast has been welcomed with open arms into the city. It is unfortunate that critics keep bashing the show.

I must say, I enjoy this show VERY much...It's just different enough to interest me. NO is such a different culture. I enjoyed this episode, but was wondering if they filmed it in the summer..those guys were sweaty! ha I'm looking forward to seeing the characters and the relationships develop...I hope it keeps going! (I know I'm old, but I love my Cobb!:-x)

I disagree with you, Beanne. I don't see how the episode's premise was "weak" when it focused on a decision Boulett made many months ago still haunted him today and affected his work. I think what viewers can take from this are the times when we've had to make a decision that we thought was right, only to learn later that the other decision would have led to better results.

Now, I was surprised that this one guy that Boulett saved had that much power without "associates." I thought the episode would have ended with him getting shot by one of the shop owners who then claimed intimidation or trespassing as a defense.

Kara,

You're right about it seeming a little disconnected. From what I've read about the show's production order, this episode was bumped on the schedule numerous times. I think it was supposed to originally be the third or fourth episode.

Still a great one, though.
