Episode Recap: "Back to LA"/"An Unexpected Friend"
"Back to LA" Lauren returns to Los Angeles with a new outlook on life. France opened up her eyes to other cultures and other men, especially who aren’t named Brody. Whitney also returned ready to make a big change, to leave Teen Vogue and pursue her passion for styling. Her maturity shines as she asks Lisa Love for her blessing to explore new job opportunities. In one of those rare, caring moments, Lisa assures her that recommendations will be made in her favor.
Heidi finally returns to Bolthouse. She tells Kimberly she wants Spencer to move out, yet not see other people. Spencer on the other hand, is mad he has to move out and considers the opposite. His sister Stephanie, who he’s moving in with, wonders what it will be like when Heidi comes over to hang with her. Way to be a loving and supportive sister concerned for your brother’s feelings. I guess all Pratts are alike.
Whitney has her interview at People’s Revolution with Kelly Cutrone. Kelly seems like a Lisa Love on speed. She cuts to the chase and offers her a job. Between Lisa’s recommendation and the way Whitney has portrayed herself through the seasons, I’m not surprised this job offer came so easily. The one catch of the position is that Kelly informs her she’ll have to give up her life, but look on the bright side, she also says she’ll gain a whole new one. It should be interesting to see how Whitney’s new career role pans out throughout this season.
A very single Lauren and Audrina hit up their hangout, Le Deux, and it’s about 5 minutes before Frankie and Brody show up. She won’t give him a hug but instead asks him where his girlfriend is. Brody asks Lauren where her boyfriend is, and says “I have friends in Paris.” C’mon Brody, I think your “friends” are the producers and cameramen who told you about Lauren’s trip. Lauren’s clearly bitter and still not over him. The next day Lauren and Lo are out to lunch and it’s obvious she’s feeling down. Lo’s honesty about the situation will hopefully make Lauren realize that the conversation is always the same, and in the end she never feels good enough.
Spencer and Whitney are both moving out and seemingly moving on with their lives. Spencer gets his stuff from the apartment and it certainly feels like a breakup and not just “giving Heidi her space.” Whitney leaves Teen Vogue after reminiscing over the good and bad times her and Lauren have had there. With Spencer out of the apartment, will his relationship with Heidi improve or only worsen? Will Whitney be able to handle a new job and will Lauren survive Teen Vogue without her?
"An Unexpected Friend" Lauren will never be able to escape the Pratts. In what I guess is her first class of the semester, she hears Stephanie’s name called, and realizes they’re going to be sitting only a few seats away from each other for an entire semester. Based on the previews, we know this will spice things up when they become, gasp, friends.
Whitney is already jet-setting to New York for fashion week. She doesn’t learn much about her new position, except that she must wear black and that she’ll be working until 2 or 3 in the morning. Her first task is to help style designer Sass & Bide as they prepare for their fashion show. During the fittings, Whitney doesn’t keep her opinions to herself and instead of being shot down, her ideas go over well. She’s giddy over her new job. The next day Whitney is thrown into the mix to help backstage during the Sass & Bide show. She excels under the pressure and proves herself to Kelly. Already she is rewarded when she learns that upon her return to LA, her role at People’s Revolution will be expanded.
On the 2nd day of computer class, Stephanie apologizes to Lauren for the way she screamed at her during their last major encounter. Is She-Spencer being genuine or do you think she just wants more screen time? I think it’s the latter. Stephanie helps Heidi paint her apartment and manages to slip in that she told Lauren she was sorry. Heidi immediately puts on her sourpuss face. Over at Lola’s, Audrina and Lo tell Lauren they don’t trust Stephanie but Lauren is pretty much defending her. I think we can all see that this is headed towards an actual Pratt/Conrad friendship.
Stephanie complains to Spencer that she’s sick of choosing sides. She’s also quick to say he’s a loser and not worthy of the gorgeous Heidi. I think you just chose your side there. And Spencer says he can’t trust her. Here’s a great family dynamic for you, and why are they even living together then? Stephanie and Lauren have lunch the next day and Stephanie continues to bash her bro. I don’t get this girl and I hope Lauren doesn’t give in to her fake attempts at being nice.
Next week is Lauren’s birthday, which can only mean drama.

Whitney's great. It's awesome to see the "Go-Getter" side of her. Thank God Lo's gotta level head, Lauren sure doesn't. She's very immature. "Where's your girlfriend??" Puh-leez.

It took Brody a matter of days to get a girlfriend after Lauren left town. I don't blame her one bit for her treatment of Brody. I'm just disgusted that in the previews it looks like she'll be talking to him next week.
Here's my take: 1) The producers are pushing Lauren to remain friends with Brody because he's good for the show (so unfair - she needs to be away from him to get over him) 2) The producers are also pushing this Stephanie/Lauren friendship, which is ridiculous. I can't stand Spencer, but his own sister should stick up for him, not berate him! And, yes, Stephanie definitely just wants more screen time. 3) The whole situation with Spencer and Heidi is a JOKE! Give me a break - that makes the show seem very fake bacause we know they are together because they on US magazine's cover constantly!
I love this show, but the latest episodes seem really staged and it is becoming less realistic for me.
