The Shift of Power

Episode Recap: "Truth and Consequences"

I’m so pumped for next week’s episode that my mind can’t focus on what just happened!

We knew Noah was alive. [To think Jack Coleman was originally cast for just five to six episodes is mind boggling.] I felt awful for Claire, but why would she want to erase the memories of her father? I understand her guilt, but her memory loss plan really bothered me. The last scene, after Claire dumped her father’s fake ashes, was priceless. Elle fumbling with her keys after blowing her cover and Claire putting her fist through the car window shows the shift of power. Claire has never been one to run or show fear, but losing a loved one changes you. I wouldn’t mess with her. How effective will Elle be with her arm in a sling? My vote has always been on Claire, but rumor has it she won’t be the Elle-showdown we’re waiting for. Apparently, Miss Electro runs into another “hero” and he/she doesn’t play nice.

Noah Gray-Carey impressed me tonight. Our little Micah showed so much emotion and fight. I knew his greedy cousin stole his backpack. Monica dressed like the comic book hero St. Joan (Joan of Arc?) and tried to steal back D.L.’s medal. However, she was caught and her abilities are no match for gun power. I’m hoping Micah runs and gets his mom. I miss Niki and her power.

One twin down, one to go. Alejandro and Maya never bothered me. I didn’t care for their storyline, but I didn’t make it my life purpose to hate on them every week. Are the twin-haters happy? I wasn't impressed by how easy Alejandro fell nor was it clear if Sylar got his power. I threw up a little in my mouth when Maya and Sylar kissed. Ugghhhh. Sylar won the girl’s heart, but can he steal her brain? Charming.

Also, for those who are still dumbfounded by Sylar’s power. He knows how things work. That’s why we hear the clock ticking before, while and after he makes a kill. The powers lie within the brain, so he performs malpractice worthy neuro-surgery and learns how they work. Once he figures out how that specific power “tics” his brain can use it to his advantage. His power seems similar to Monica‘s. Well, that’s what I think. I’ve been reading many people’s comments and some were still confused by what his initial power is. By the way, did Zachary Quito share a personal trainer with Milo Ventmiglia?

We met Victoria Pratt for about five minutes. Adam knew she would reach for the shotgun once she was untied. He knew he was going to kill her before they arrived at her house. How did they know where she lived anyway?

Hiro is back to saving the world again. Ando said it best, “Why is saving the world always your responsibility?” He’s Hiro! Duh. I can’t wait for the Hiro/Peter showdown.

When Hiro traveled to 1977, he saw a young Victoria and Kaito stop Adam from stealing a virus. Victoria said that he must have had help (Adam’s “disciples“) if he knew where to find the virus. Strand 138 of the Shanti Virus must be an airborne strand with no cure. I think The Company and Victoria were trying to mutant the virus so that it could kill someone with cellular regeneration. Someone like Adam. They must have known, even then, how dangerous he was. Maybe the research went too far and to unleash it for it’s original purpose would not only destroy someone like Adam or Claire; it could also cause human extinction. I could be completely wrong, but Bob stated once again that The Company’s main goal to is find dangerous people with special abilities. Again, this is why I think The Company falls into a gray area (see last week’s blog). I would never side with them, but I think it’s best to say “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. (It's just a quote. I know I'm asking for major comment criticism here, but people can argue all they want. Good people make bad decisions.)

So, Sylar has Maya and Molly. Will Mohinder be able to save them all? I know there’s a lot of Mohinder hate going around and yes, I’ve stated that he makes ridiculously dumb choices, but how can you hate him? Every time you think you want Mohinder off the show just think back to season one when he helped stop Sylar in the future. That should bring your dislike for him down a few notches. I could never hate him, he always does what he thinks is right and even geniuses get it wrong sometimes. Plus, he is the best looking character on the show!

Spoiler Alert: Two THREE heroes die next week. Or fall? Or die and then get resurrected? Will it be heroes we know and love? New or old? Who do you think it will go to hero heaven or hell?

So now we have 3 contestants in the "Most Gullible" contest:

First there's the long time odds on favorite, Mohinder, who has been fooled by just about everyone so far. His doctoral thesis was on why the word gullible isn't in the dictionary. Put him in a round room and tell him the exit is in the corner and he'll never get out.

Then there the chica with the disorder from south of the border. Maya has become so completely seduced by Sylar that she hasn't even noticed that he murdered her twin brother. Are those puppet strings growing out of her shoulders?

And a late entry in gullible's travels, Peter Petrelli. The lean, mean, immortal gaijin is leading him around like a little puppy dog. Peter is the one most likely to snap out of it. He seemed to have some doubts when Adam killed Victoria, and Hiro is about to cash his reality check.

On another note: I'm really liking West more and more - but I was kind of hoping he'd pick Elle up and drop her in the ocean..

WARNING: MAJOR SARCASM AHEAD

This episode was more flat than day-old soda.

No Matt: What?! The slimmer of hope of a good plotline...is not visited at all in this episode. Poo. But where the heck was Matt when Sylar entered his and Mohinder's apartment?

The World-Killing Virus is Engineered: What?! x2. Previous posts in this blog have hypotheized that the super-virus was caused by Claire/Adam's super-blood. Instead, it's just a copy of Resident Evil. Strand 138 is a much lamer name than the T-Virus.

Sylar/Maya: Here's their dialogue, paraphrased by me:
"I can't stop killing people!"
"Try to stop killing people."
"Uh-oh, I'm killing you!"
"STOP KILLING ME!"
"Okay! I can control my ability now! Let's have sex! ^_^"

Yes, I puked at that.

Claire: I see a commercial idea:

T-H-E H-A-T-I-A-N: My Anti-Drug

Who needs drugs or counseling with Claire's mother or West when you have your own personal memory-erasing servant? Sick the Hatian on LiLo, IMO.

Peter/Adam: How the heck did they get from Montreal, to Maine, to Texas so quickly?!

Monica/Micha: Comic books are serious business in New Orleans, apparently.

This episode was mostly a set-up for the season finale. But I still feel injustice.

NEXT EPISODE DISCUSSION: I'm 99.9% sure that Niki and Maya are killed. Niki's plotline is dead (especially since Mohinder can't give her the blood) and Maya because...well...she sucks.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the interaction between Bob and Elle. I'd love to see more backstory for Elle, and not just because I LOVE Kristen Bell. Did anybody notice the lightning necklace she was wearing? I thought it was funny, my dad thought it was tacky.

Zinger314: You remind me of that friend we all have who I hate to go out to dinner with, because no matter what you will always find something wrong. Or compare it to something else.

Resident Evil? Seriously, because that movie (video game) was so orignal.

Please tell me exactly how you want the show to end. I'm being serious. I want to know what you expect. Leave it in a comment or send me a message - whichever you prefer.

Gee, thanks Casey. (both for your "compliment" and enraging me enough to stay up until 1 AM on a school night)

I make the comparisons because Heroes has always felt original to me. The first season plot of intentionally destorying 0.7% of the world's population and Issac Mendez's paintings added a realm of intrique (plus, the past/future episodes of that season were very well done). In season two, however, we are using a B-rate plot (alright, so I said Resident Evil, first thing that popped into my mind for viral extinction, big deal) which is not what I expect from a show with such potential. (And the past/future episodes of the season were OK). I give a little slack due to the writer's strike, though...

How *I* want the show to end? That depends; am I posting as a casual viewer or as a Jack Donaghy who wants to capitalize on the Heroes franchise? Hehe.

Since I'm presuming the former:

Hiro/Peter/Adam: Hiro and Peter don't fight, Hiro and Adam spar in Round 2 of their 400 year grudge (and fulfilling the Issac Mendez painting). Hiro inflicts a wound on Adam, they stop, Adam recognizes Hiro as the superior fighter (which parallels Adam's desire from the online graphic novels). Adam explains that he trying to stop the virus to Hiro, Hiro forgives him.

When they find the virus, they are met by Bob and Elle. Bob shoots Hiro, both Elle and Peter knock each other out in a lightning clash, Adam confronts Bob in a dramatic moment; and kills him, dropping the picture/helix on his corpse. Adam obtains the virus and plans to spread it...until Hiro, in another dramatic moment, rises up and cuts Adam's head off, killing him, ending their grudge, and stopping the virus threat. Chapter End.

Maya/Sylar/Mohinder: Mohinder stimulates Sylar and eventually Sylar regains his powers. Sylar beats up Mohinder (and Molly, who lovingly tries to protect Mohinder), gives Maya one final kiss, then kills her and steals her power. Sylar waltzes into Times Square, and, as a test, he activates Maya's power and kills everyone. He laughs.

H.R.G/Claire/West/Matt: Matt arrives in Costa Verde to tell Claire/West that HRG is alive and where he is, and they attempt to rescue him. In the meantime, HRG breaks out of the Company facility Jack Bauer-style. Matt uses his Jedi Mind Trick to enter the facility with Claire and West, they meet HRG; West is shot while protecting HRG. Cue sappy "I love you." to Claire and dies.

Monica/Micah/Nikki: Micah and Nikki attempt to rescue Monica. Nikki attempts to use her super strength to open a door, but fails due to the virus. Nikki is shot, Monica knocks out the entire gang in retaliation. Nikki dies in Micah's arms.

Nathan: Reveals his flight ability to the general public, causes everything to come full circle to prevent another catastrophe; the reason the Company was made, the reason Adam tried to release the virus, and what Claire was going to do at the end of this last episode.

I'm not a writer and am only 17, but I still hit all the necessary drama requirements for the 21st century.

Although I kill Bob, Adam, Maya, Nikki, and West, obviously a lot more than expected, it would be a good idea to kill off all these extraneous characters.

Casey, keep in mind that there's nothing wrong with pessimism. Pessimism is why we discovered that the world is round. ;)

I thought this was a really good episode.
I really want to see how Monica gets out of the mess she's in. With a character like Peter, for second I took for granted that her power is to physical skill, not powers (at least, so far as we've seen) and that, while she can get into the house like a pro, she has no means of defense like some of our other heroes might.
I'm wondering how she'll get free or who will save her. I imagine it wont be Nikki, since she has the virus, which would have muted her powers, right? Or does that come later, as the virus progresses?
Maybe it'll be Monica's brother, displaying his own power; or better yet, Nanna. I so love to see Nichelle kick some ass.
Peter needs to wake up, and with any luck he already has and has some suspicions about Adam.
So, at this point is the "Company", "Primatech", or is that just one of it's aliases?

Zinger314 you crack me up.

But really I was thinking Adam was more like Ra's al Ghul from batman. I mean they are very similiar, both have lived hundreds of years and want to cleanse the earth with a genetically engineered virus.

I liked a lot of your ideas - though I was wondering how Matt would know that HRG was alive and how he would get to Claire and family on time.

Also, I would like to see more interaction between Angela Petrelli and Matt. Plus Nathan is missing from your episode.

That being said I didn't think the episode was flat - it just wasn't wow

I have always enjoyed the Claire and West relationship. The chances of finding someone with powers that isnt a crazy psycho like sylar or adam are apparently very slim since everyone seems to be falling for their bs. Plus, he has been a great support system for Claire in the past few episodes. He even talked her out of erasing her memories! I know its probably a slim possibility but I hope that West stays for at little while longer. I would like to see their relationship develop further and it would give Claire a new way to grow as a person.

The Twins- I don't hate them. If it was worked into the story differently I think people would have had a different opinion of them, but such is life. Anyway, Sylar did away with the brother after Maya chose "Gabriel" What the crap?! Since she left her bro for psycho boy, she has to pay. Blah and CREAPY!!!! Creapy in an oddly very sexy way. Although Sylar coming out to meet Maya with out a shirt and wet... OMG! Spock is HOT! Too bad Sylar is hell bent ondestroying everything... no redemption for him. So it looks like Maya's days are numbered. Moving on...

Mohinder is one stupid scientist. While he ultimately comes to the conclusion that the crazy virus needs to be destroyed does he really think Bob would let him do that? Ugh, some one smack him please oh wait HRG is strapped down in isolation. damn!

Speaking of gullible, Peter has joined the club and is currently wearing the jacket as well. Although to give him some credit, no one bothered to explain to him who was in the cell next to him but I guess thats not the point. So apparently the reason they were locked up in the cell was to eventually strip them of their powers with out killing them? Is that right? Eh their out now, doesn't matter that much. Peter has some serious priority issues. Who has he known longer? Whose future self transported back in time to tell him that his niece was important to saving the world? HIRO!!!!! And he is putting his trust into someone he knows relatively little about. Peter, here's your jacket....

I was really hoping that Claire was going to kick the crap out of Elle. Instead she just punched the car window. yeah.... blah. Oh and Bob giving them HRG's ashes with that crappy speech... I was seriously waiting for Sandra to shoot him, at least in the knee or something. But how about that promise to Claire to leave her alone? Possibly another lie?

Monica needs to watch some Alias episodes.

Niki. I'm sorry, you're dead.

I have liked Heroes this season and I look forward to the finale, damn fricken writers strike!

It's funny how risk-taking the villains are. Sylar trusted his own manipulations of Maya over her letting him die. Adam trusted Peter would clean up any mistakes he made when going after Victoria.
Sylar has proven to be an effective killer even without his powers. He's killed two heroes and one normal person already. Althought the preview said a villain will rise and showed Sylar holding out his hand, I didn't see anything happening and wonder if that's a bit misleading.
I suppose Mohinder has no choice but to go to Sylar with the anti-virus, which will mean the death of Niki.
As much as I think Micah punching his cousin was completely out of character, especially since his cousin was already bleeding from being 'jacked' by those thugs, I can imagine the death of both his parents might harden him.
Then again, Molly lost both of her parents. I am sure Sylar would love to have Molly's power so he could easily track down other heroes to, um, assimilate. Maya and Sylar have got to be one of the creepiest relationships ever on television.
I so wanted to see Noah get up and punch Mohinder in the face. This is so reminiscient of the end of last season when Noah has a gun pointed at Molly while Mohinder points his gun at Noah.
It's too bad Matt isn't around to stop them from going at each other. All he's going to find is that the killer beat him to Victoria and it was dumb to leave Molly with a babysitter.
I can understand Hiro's anger, but you'd think since he stopped time he could take 5 minutes to explain to Peter about Adam without rushing into battle against him. I suppose he'll teleport right behind Peter with the sword to his neck like we saw in last week's promo.
With Alex dead does that mean we'll have to put up with less subtitles? I mean, who's Maya going to speak Spanish too? lol
I'm sad there is one episode left to go and tonight's episode was rather blah but here's hoping to the end of the writer's strike and more Heroes.

I'm interested in finding out the "hero" that Elle runs into who doesn't play nice. Doesn't sound too good for Elle. I know KB was only confirmed to sign on for a half a year, wasn't she? So has that changed? If it hasn't, then she's probably gone. I do like KB and I actually kind of like Elle. She's different and I'd like to see the backstory, like someone else said, and maybe see if she's worthy to change. But if KB has only signed on for a half season or so many episodes, then she's probably one of the hero deaths. It doesn't help that when they said 2 heroes would die, she was one of those in the pics. The other pics were Hiro, Matt, Nathan, & Claire. I can't really see any of those dying, but I guess with this show anything's possible. Of course, do we know if they are really dying or is this one of those make you think they're dying things? It's not like we haven't seen that before, right?

Peter should be less concerned about the Shanti virus and more worried about catching the Mohinder virus. Those Suresh kids infect everything!

I couldn't help but laugh at Elle's "I was shot and my body doesn't heal itself" line. That and her one-armed stakeout while drinking a slushie. Bob is usually so good at manipulating people, but I'm not sure why he would be so mad at Elle. Considering how damaged she already is, he's just baiting her to turn on him.

Did Adam use Maury to find out where Victoria was? Is that why Maury was after Molly? Matt should find whatever travel agent Peter has, because they have him all over the globe in a matter of hours.

Wish we could've seen what Victoria's power was. Another founder dead with no indication of what she could do. In fact, the only definitive powers we know about are Bob's, Maury's and Linderman's. If only Victoria had mentioned Adam's name in her quick recap of why she was in hiding. Then Peter would know not to believe Adam. Or maybe he does know, but is pretending not to until he saves Caitlin.

Out of all the strange things we've seen, one of the most startling images was Sylar and Maya enjoying a picnic together. Downright creepy. I kept waiting for Alejandro to get really mad and use Maya's power on Sylar. Guess it doesn't work like that, but he had to have some kind of ability. If two siblings can get powers, than surely both twins would have powers as well.

Monica and Micah make a great team, and it was fun to see them use their powers together. It would've been even better to see Niki "Hulk out" and save the day.

It can't be a coincidence that Victoria started working on the virus the same year that Adam appeared. I think Adam found out about the Company somehow, and learned about what they were doing. As a good faith measure, he revealed the whereabouts of the Kensei sword to Linderman, because he knew Linderman was into ancient artifacts. He became friendly with the other founders, and even let them do research on him. All so that he could get closer to releasing the virus.

Again, given what Kaito knew about Adam, why was he surprised that he was killing everyone? He knew Adam tried to get the virus released thirty years ago, so obviously he's not above murder. I think it's ironic that the founding members talked about how evil Adam was/is, yet they kept the mutated strain of the virus knowing how deadly it is. Not so much a gray area on that one.

When you get the virus, Peter, just how do you plan on destroying it? And, how exactly will that save Kaitlin? Will destroying the virus suddenly enable you to return to the future and find her? How, exactly? Seems to me that there's a pretty big gap in the logic of his storyline.

I'm sorry but I don't get Adam's motivation at all. A 400 year old grudge because a geeky guy from the future kissed a girl that you didn't even like but for what seemed like a few days? Hmm.

I'm definitely not a hater and I'm not overly critical of this season, but instead of coming into focus, the weaknesses of the storylines this season are unraveling the thin plot. I'm a bit relieved that the strike is making the next episode wrap this chapter up because it needs to end so the show can move on, and hopefully back, to the quality of season one.

I am probably in the minority but I have wanted Sylar gone from last season. I have nothing against Zachary Quinto but to me Sylar had worn out his welcome. It was always the same with him. Find people with powers and kill them. It annoyed me that no one put up a fight. Now this whole thing with Maya I am getting more tired with his character.

I had no problem with the twins until Maya started going gaga over Sylar. Even when Sylar pretends to be nice he stills come off creepy. Maya is just coming off as stupid right now.

The Claire/West thing I have actually warmed up to. I am really glad Noah is still alive.

First there's the long time odds on favorite, Mohinder, who has been fooled by just about everyone so far. His doctoral thesis was on why the word gullible isn't in the dictionary. Put him in a round room and tell him the exit is in the corner and he'll never get out.

So funny. And true.

I thought the best part was when Elle got caught on her stakeout and spilled her slushie all over herself. I'd hate to see her go now. I thought she was cheesy at first, but she has transformed into a great, snarky character. Veronica would be proud.

I assume that Peter transported him and Adam to wherever they needed to go.

I don't like that Maya was able to manifest the entire power. I thought it was a neat twist that because Maya and Alejandro were twins they shared two sides of one complete power.

Casey: Mohinder may very well be very good looking, but myself, I love me some Nathan (and am so sad about no Nathan again). I swear, Nathan's mother has been in this season more--which I would be ok with, if we found out her power.

Also, to the person that said the only founder's powers we know are Bob, Maury, and Linderman, don't forget about Adam, he's a founder too.
