"We All Have Our Roles to Play"
Who can be trusted? Jack Coleman, Ashley Crow by Chris Haston/NBC
Episode Recap: "Out Of Time"
Welcome to November Sweeps. The writers’ are on strike, NBC is green and Heroes is back!
If you’re reading this, there is a good chance you are a regular at the Heroes TV Guide blog. Let’s get right to it.
Last week, I mentioned Mr. Bennet’s sloppy handy work in Ukraine. I knew he would get caught! He also destroyed the remaining paintings. Two of which, came true in tonight’s episode. The battle between Kensei and Hiro and Peter’s distraught first look at human extinction.
Many of you should give yourselves pats on the back! As I watched tonight’s episode so many of your predictions and comments in the past weeks came true. Especially, when Kensei turned out to be Adam Monroe! So, Kensei/Adam and Claire are immortal. I think they remain forever young at the age they realize they have powers. It looks like we will never see Claire at happy hour. Who liked this episode as much as I did? I know it’s been slow, but tonight’s episode had our favorite characters, answered questions, offered new twists and Hiro returned!
All of the legends Hiro heard as a child came true. Hiro not only changed history with his visit, he also changed the future. Am I wrong to think that the last battle between Kensei and Hiro (the Dragon) also came true? Or will it occur later? I figured the “cutting out” of Kensei’s heart was a broken heart metaphor. Hiro said it best, “Pain has made him cruel.” I for see Hiro and Kensei (aka Adam) eventually meeting up and hopefully Hiro’s next line, “…but he is still good inside”, will come true. Only Hiro has the power to fix this. It was painful to watch him say goodbye to his true love, but I am thrilled to see Hiro back with Ando! I completely forgot that Hiro never knew if they had saved the world. It seems so long ago, like, six episodes ago. How wonderful was it to hear Hiro utter the words: “No bomb? No boom? We saved the world!” If I could, I would write Japanese characters that say what sounds like, "YATTA!" when he cheers. It was happy, old Hiro again… until he asked about his father.
Peter accidentally left Caitlyn in the future. Did Mrs. Petrelli use her power to help him regain memories? The Company knew he was alive. Why didn't they tell Mrs. Petrelli? It's just another reason why you can never trust The Company. We try to get out, but they keep pulling us back in!
Matt actually figured out a way to trap his father and save Molly. His powers may not be as strong and experienced as Maury’s, but his love for others is greater. Maury is just like Sylar. They are power hungry and only love themselves. It consumes them.
I was glad to see D.L. I know he is dead and it was only Maury using Niki’s fears against her, but it’s nice to see actor, Leonard Roberts, is still with us. He was one of my favorite characters last season. It was also nice to know that it has been Niki this entire time. Even when she threw Mohinder, I still think it was Niki. I don’t think Jessica appeared at all in this episode, it was merely Niki becoming overly paranoid (for good reason) and using her super strength. Nathan has great political skills. He convinced Niki that she was a good person and to think of Micah. She came to her senses and injected herself with the Shanti virus. However, the new strand has become immune to Mohinder’s antibodies. I knew that would happen. The nightmare of human extinction is obsessively frightening and interesting for that exact reason. It scares the hell out of us, because it is truly possible. How does this virus spread? Mohinder’s sister was the first known victim. The Haitian was infected as well. Do you have to be injected with the virus? Will this new strand become contagious through contact? Or worse. Airborne?
West finally saw Claire’s father, the man with the horn-rimmed glasses. He freaked! All bets are off. Maybe West is simply a reckless teenager with raging hormones for his cute, blonde biology partner. I still don’t fully trust him. The night they played the prank on the drunken mean-girl cheerleader, he dodged a question about his parents. I don’t think he has any. And if he does, he ran away from home a long time ago. Maybe after he was abducted, he knew it would never be safe again and he flew to the west coast. By the way, aside from Mr. Muggles, Mrs. Bennet (Ashley Crow) gets cooler with every episode.
Who do we trust? Mohinder confessed that he and Mr. Bennet were planning to take down The Company. Was it me or was Bob’s reaction too calm? As if he knew all along. Bob tells Mohinder that the only cure for this virus is Claire, because of her regeneration powers. We’ve all wondered if Claire’s power could beat the Shanti virus or Maya’s black eyed plague. It’s a high possibility. Did they experiment with Kensei/Adam or Peter when they held him at The Company? Is Mohinder ready to kill? Will Claire stand by as her father falls? If you save the cheerleader, can you save the world?
[OK, this is my best attempt at any biblical references in the show. I do not mean to offend any one or religion when writing this. And forgive me, if I am wrong, because I am not an expert on the New Testament or Christianity, but this is what I have so far: Maybe all the biblical character names do serve a purpose (mentioned many times by my readers and commenters). So, Adam Monroe is the leader of the “bad“ guys. The name Adam is also biblically known as the first man. The first man who defied the Lord and ate the forbidden fruit. In a sense, Adam took his gifts for granted. Just like Kensei with his powers. Peter, an Apostle of Jesus, thrice denied him at the Last Supper. I may be completely wrong, but this could mean Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) follows Adam, but denies (defies) him in the end. This could be a stretch and again, I don’t mean to offend anyone or any religion, so please, just take my opinion as a reference and Heroes possibility.]
Many of you have excellent theories about Heroes and tonight's episode proved anything is possible. I know this blog was long, but alot happened! What do you all think?

Wow, best episode of the season so far. It focused on the characters we all loved, focused on the main storylines for this season, and we actually got some answers. Loved the twist at then end, though I saw it coming. This was the first Season 2 episode that I though was just as good as the spisodes last year.

I just posted the blog and here I go with comments... haha... I've never thought of Mr. Bennet as a "Noah". But his job with The Company was to go out and "catch" people with powers. I wonder if there was ever a unicorn he couldn't capture?
I'm agnostic. I like to think of myself as spiritual. I believe in the good of people, a modern day hippie, if you will. So again, I apologize if my biblical references are off.
But obviously, the writers have the names of the Heroes characters well thought out.

Let's do this in bullet time.
"Green" eclipse opening - What the heck? I know this is Green week, but that's a tad silly
Claire/West Storyline - It's funny seeing Hayden Panettiere be so rebellious after her "incident" this week. I don't think Clarie can claim this conflict as "emotional!"
My personal favorite line from the episode:
Claire: "You know what I want? Popsicles."
Although I have a slight Freudian complex...I don't think she meant "ice" popsicles...
My money is on West [attempting] killing Mr. Bennet, as it definately won't be Mohinder...
Peter/Caitlyn Storyline:- Boo. Nothing new, except for the temporal paradox caused by leaving Caitlyn in the future.
Mohinder Suresh - He's double-crossing Bob in favor of Mr. Bennet. Otherwise, Suresh would have revealed he rescued the Hatian.
Matt/Molly/Father - Well, that was a sweet way to end it, albeit anticlimatic.
No Maya/Alejandro - Yay!
No Elle - Huh? You promote an Kiersten Bell with an absurd amount of hype and she doesn't even appear for two episodes?
Kensei/Adam: The big dirt. My personal theory is that Adam is a demi-god: he has all powers. (as evidenced by Bob's references to Snow in Miami and Tsunamis)
Kensei might not only be immortal; he may be able to travel through the space-time continuum as well!
One major point: Adam/Kensei said to Hiro before he left that he would "Never!" forget his theft of love. I have a feeling Adam/Kensei will be extracting revenge soon.

Just when I'm ready to throw in the towel and give up on Heroes, they pull something like this and hook me back in!
Loved that Kensei is Adam- and now we finally have an explanation for the attacks on the twelve (or those that are left of the twelve). I had been trying to figure out for the last two weeks how Maury was able to kill Mr. Nakamura, and now the reveal about Kensei solves that problem- he did it himself.
More importantly, Hiro's back- I've really missed the interaction b/w him and Ando. As for the final Kensei story- perhaps Kensei/Adam will "cut his heart out" and sacrifice himself to save the world from the plague, since his power is the same as Claire's and appears to be the antidote?
And to top it off, Peter's back into real time and his story's finally taking off. I can't say I'm sad that Caitlin is still in the future though.
Glad to see Parkman taking charge and really stepping up as a hero. I'm so glad he saved Molly. Although, I find it hard to believe we've seen the last of Maury.
Still don't trust West at all. Yeah, he's a teenager and reckless, but there's something really fishy going on there. Which brings us to Claire and HRG- I knew those secrets weren't going to end well for either of them. I honestly don't know if I could keep watching if Mohinder kills HRG.
The issue with Claire and her being the only sure presents an interesting situation though. It also struck me as odd that Bob singaled Claire out when Adam has the exact same power. Granted, he knows where Claire is, but I have a feeling that the fate of the world will come down to both Adam and Claire and their regenerating cells.
As for Nikki, I can't help but think she'll do something dumb, like head down to New Orleans to say good-bye to Micah and inadvertantly spread the virus.
Just a quick comment on the Biblical references- I think Casey's comments about Adam are spot on. He has, like Adam of the Old Testament, turned his back on the authority force of the Company. As for Peter, I see him more in the light of the Acts of the Apostles Peter- the whole "on this rock I will build my Church" idea. Perhaps Peter will, at the end of the show, be the leader of the heroes, as Peter was for the early Christians. And we can't forget about the 12 representing the 12 apostles. I guess that would make Maury Judas- unless Adam was in that picture somehow.

I agree. This epi finally had a season one taste to it. Definitely not the best, but still.
And Peter doesn't deny Jesus at the Last Supper. Jesus tells Peter at the Last Supper that he will deny knowing him when it comes time for Jesus' trial and crucifixion.
Peter indeed denied him thrice.

If the company had Adam & Peter - then they would have already done all of the tests on them, as HRG says - they test them past there limit, just on principle. So they probably don't really need Claire to find a cure, but they probably need Claire to see if the virus would kill someone like her and Adam.
Noah was the person who on faith spent years building an ark, though it had never rained before, and thus saved his family's lives and the animals. I don't see how that has anything to do with catching people or finding a unicorn.
It seems as though Bob was saying he started the company - banded them all together - convincing them they could save the world, and then slowly moved them to make decisions they normally wouldn't do. Thus the name Adam would symbolize their beginning and then their later corruption.
Though I knew what that Adam was going to be Kensei (by the time they got to it-it was obvious). I loved that they did it that way- & I can forgive the writers for the torture of the Kensei story. Heroes is supposed to be based off of the comic books. In every comic there is a story where the hero and the villain had some kind of connection in the past with each other and becomes each other's nemesis. (ex. brainiac & superman, Raas al Ghul & Batman, Professor X and Juggernaut, Professor X and Magneto, Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike) So we needed that background to establish that kind of relationship- & now we should be able to reap the benefit to watching them deal with each other. And like every good villain - He'll always come back.
"I think they remain forever young at the age they realize they have powers." Claire will grow until she is an adult - & then she just won't age- that's how regenerative powers work (ex. Wolverine got his healing powers as a boy)

There was actually a third painting that came true in this episode, Nikki pounding down the door as she tried to off dear old Bob.
We also know how Mohinder got his broken nose, and the shooting (or at least, gun waving) will be in the next couple of weeks (at least, couple weeks in Heroes' time, who knows how many episodes).
I note how they call it the "Shanti" virus, after Mohinder's sister. So apparently more information in that regard is going to come to light. No disease which requires injection or casual contact could wipe out 93% of the population. We know too much about how diseases spread for that sort of thing to work. Plus, once an outbreak is confirmed, people will shut themselves inside their homes and the disease will burn out on its own. So, it's either a really vicious airborne form (say, a month of incubation with the carrier being contagious the whole time), or there is a superpowered element in place. Also, I know it's just TV, but viruses are -not- that deadly. The human immune system is a brutally efficient defense mechanism. So, I suspect that there is a superpowered element in place. Perhaps some unholy combination of the new strain with Maya's powers.
Now that I was vindicated about Takeo Kensai being the one who threw the elder Nakamura off of the building, perhaps we'll find out just what his powers are capable of. Bob seemed to strongly imply that he has some capacity to significantly alter physical events. A snowstorm in a traditionally warm area is difficult enough, but the ability to create a tsunami that can wipe out the entire eastern seaboard takes so much power as to be staggering. Getting tens of billions of gallons of water to cohesively move at such a speed to do widespread destruction across some 3000 miles of coastline? Yikes. No current ability in the Heroverse even compares with that kind of power output.
Lastly, I'm going to miss Yaeko. She was stunning.

I have two theories as to the story of "Kensei and the Dragon"
The first is that Yaeko passed it down because Hiro told her that is how the story is supposed to end. It doesn't really happen, but is told as a fitting ending to the story.
The second theory is a little more complicated. In the story, the dragon is described as teaching Kensei the art of the sword. Since we know Hiro is the real Kensei, and his dad taught him to use the sword, that would make Kaito Nakamura the dragon. This would mean George Takei would need to come back and demand Hiro's love. However, Kaito is dead and Yaeko is in the past, so I dont know how this could happen. They did seem to focus on the dragon teaching Kensei how to fight, so I have a strong feeling that this will come into play somehow.

I have to go get yelled at by clients tomorrow as we continue to switch to a state wide system at work.... But just had to stay up to post how good this episode was. For all those who have been complaining about this great show, if this doesn't satisfy you then I don't know what will. Maybe you are watching the wrong show. But this seemed like someone just put the petal down and we hit 80mph!!! Nite.

This episode shows that when they get rid of all the new characters (they should have done the same with West and Kensei), the show returns to its awesome self. The extraneous characters (except for few supporting roles) are really unnecessary.
Look at this episode. What makes it great is the interaction between all of the existing heroes, be it Peter/Angela, Nathan/Niki, Matt/Molly, Mohinder/HRG. Also, this is the kind of pacing that the show should have used right from the beginning.
While we're at it, good acting on the part of Greg Grunberg, Ali Larter, Adrian Pasdar, and Christine Rose. These four really brings out their acting talents on tonight's episode and make the already awesome episode even better.

I don't know why so many people here have been complaining about the writing and the story lines to the point of saying they are about to give up on the program.
The writers know what they are doing. It takes times to develop the new story lines and pull them together. I read in one of the TV Guide interviews that everything would be coming together soon. I just put my faith in the writers and enjoy the ride.
The hardest thing for me has been accepting that some of my favorite characters are frequently killed off.

I would think that by now, Kensei/Adam would realize that losing Yaeko was actually a good thing. He wouldn't want to see her wasting away and eventually dying while he stayed the same age.
Maybe that's the root of Adam's plan. He orchestrates things so that the virus becomes more powerful and wipes out ninety-three percent of the population. He's lonely, so he's looking for a mate that is a survivor like he is. Perhaps he is looking for his "Eve" out of the remaining seven percent. Granted, he probably already knew about Claire, but maybe he didn't think she was "worthy" for some reason.
Was The Company actively searching for Maury all this time? When they had Molly in custody, she said something about not wanting to look for him, like she had done it a few times. Were they just wondering why he was off the grid, or were they afraid of what he was capable of?
