Episode Recap: "Fight or Flight"

What would you do if you were faced with your greatest fear?

It was around this time last season that Eden sacrificed herself. I was shocked when she fought against Sylar and managed to take her own life before he could steal her power. Tonight, Ricky sacrificed himself as well. He may not have stuck his finger into a socket on his own, but he did lie to protect Peter and his sister. In the end, he paid with his life. He literally was “toast." So, Peter and Elle have met before. Also, the box? A passport and ticket to Montreal! That’s it? I really thought there would be more to it.

I am a Veronica Mars fan. So, I was psyched to finally see Kristen Bell tonight. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it’s my own fault; my expectations were too high. I know her character is going to get interesting, but when? The list of questions continues: Who is her father? Is she good, evil or confused? Do she and/or her father work for The Company?

What is the deal with Mohinder? He is supposed to be some sort of genius, and yet the man has no common sense! Mr. Bennet said it best: “The moment you trust [The Company] with what you care about most. They’ll have you.” Mohinder was desperate to save Molly, but it wasn't the safest choice. Then, after Niki/Jessica broke out and attacked, he tried to free her. He didn’t even think of the consequences or the fact that cameras are everywhere watching patients’ every move. I think The Company knows Mohinder is in over his head, and they are using him to get what they want.

I was happy to see Mr. Bennet (I never liked using HRG, nor do I think he looks like a "Noah," so I am sticking with Mr. Bennet) and The Haitian working together again. Where were they? They looked like businessmen taking a walk through Russia.

The best scene of the night was between Parkman and Nathan. The fight was awesome! The camera direction and editing were well done. However, the new knowledge about telepathy intrigued me the most. Parkman and his father, Maury, are the only relatives who have similar powers. They can both read minds, however, Maury’s power is far more advanced than his son’s. Of all the powers on this show, I’d never want to be telepathic. Why? The truth hurts, and it can be used against you. Maury can not only read your thoughts, but see your greatest fears. Matt fears that he will follow in his father's bad parenting footsteps, and Nathan still blames himself for Peter's "death." This is how he is terrorizing Molly and most likely how he controlled Sylar’s world after Candace’s death. Candace was a huge part of the fake surroundings with Sylar, but with Parkman Sr. in his head, anything is possible. I’m not sure how he does it, but the mind is tricky. Human beings use less than ten percent of their brain — I’m sure the Nightmare Man can go far beyond that percentage. We use all of our brain. However, I can't help but think that some use more than others. Either way, the Nightmare Man has us all beat!

We didn’t get to see much of Hiro tonight. I want him back in the present. I’m happy he got to pull a Marty McFly and meet Kensei, but enough is enough. I’m not sure where the writers are going with this storyline, but I can only hope that it will make sense in the end.

Ando was adorable when the parchment read "Dear Ando" and the man helping him gave a confused look — “What? It’s a very common name…” Ha! And I’m glad Micah and Monica are bonding. Monica needs help understanding her power, and Micah needs a motherly figure in his life. (“Don’t even get me started on my Mom.”) He misses his mother, but I think a part of him is glad she isn’t around to mess things up. Yet.

My Favorite Moment: Ando getting frustrated with the illegible handwriting on the 1671 parchment. He wanted to know more, now. It was definitely a play on words for Heroes fans!

What...is in...THE BOX?!

Exactly what Ricky told him was in it.

I was actually happy with Kristen Bell's debut. She was on screen a lot more than I expected - I was thinking she'd show up in the very last few minutes of the episode and do nothing, but she was on screen quite a bit, and that made me happy.

The Matt-Nathan fight scene was sooo well done. Probably the best scene of the new season. This revelation about possibly expanding/evolving powers is fascinating and something I need to rewatch the show to pick up more about.

Also, I don't think Maury had anything to do with Sylar's changed surroundings. I really though it was just part of Candice's power.

I took am really tired of Hiro being in the past. This whole thing is such a waste of time. My guess is that it's all leading to the revelation that Kensei's power isn't just that he can heal - it's that he's immortal. And then when Hiro goes back to the present, he'll find Kensei, who may or may not have turned to the dark side, forcing Hiro to make the very difficult decision to have to fight against his hero. That (the conflict of Hiro having to fight his hero) would be one amazing storyline with a lot more depth than we're used to seeing from Heroes.

I think Kristen Bell is miscast. It’s not just her age or size, either—she doesn’t carry herself in a convincing manner for the part. It feels like watching a girl trying to play a woman. I’ve noticed this in interviews I’ve caught of her, too. I remember seeing her co-host "The View" once and she complained because people were expecting her to be witty and charismatic. (By the way, if an actress is not witty or charismatic, she should never admit this aloud.) She usually does alright playing kids who are trying to jump into adult roles since these are the characters she’s most naturally suited for. They’ll probably cast her next as an attorney for a high-powered law firm, though. Oy. Otherwise, I thought this was a good episode.

Loved seeing Monica play with her powers - with Micah as her mentor. It was kind of spooky seeing Mohinder show up at her door, especially since she doesn't seem to have the virus.

Wow, the editing on that Matt/Nathan scene was amazing. It quickly became apparent they were fighting each other while seeing someone else. Parkman Sr's power seems to be a blend of Matt's and Candace's - could Candace have been Matt's half sister?

Now that we understand his power, it seems quite likeley that he was the one "attacking" Mama Petrelli.

Now the big question, who is Kristan Bell's father?
Bob? Papa Parkman?

I believe they are in Odessa, Ukraine. Last week The Haitian said "we have to go to Odessa." Noah said "Odessa, TX?" And the Haitian replied, "No. Ukraine." Now at first I thought this was a joke, but there really is an Odessa, Ukraine.

Also loved the fight between Matt and Nathan. And Matt projected his thoughts into someone else's head for the first time! I thought that was pretty exciting, but maybe I'm alone in that.

I was a little more underwhelmed by Kristen Bell than I thought. I kept hearing she would have a really cool power. Maybe I expect too much, but having what seems to be a power I've already seen Peter use, just doesn't feel that awesome to me. I did feel really sad about Ricky though. I kept thinking Peter would go back to help him after Caitlin was safe or that the painting would be of Elle killing Ricky.

About Kristen Bell's power being one you've already seen Peter use; Where do you think he got it? It's feeding into the notion that she is one of the people that held him since the explosion.

Regarding her feeling like a girl trying to play a woman, I thought that was what she was going for. Think about it. She whines to her father that it's her assignment. It feels like she's supposed to trying to seem older

As a newer Veronica Mars watcher (in re-runs), I think this may be a miscast as well. Maybe she should have looked further into that (supposed) role on Lost.

I loved the fight scene as well, that is a cool power....I wonder what Molly's biggest fear is and what about it made her comatose.

So the baby really is Parkman's? From the 5 yrs in the future episode last year, that seemed to be the case.

More of Noah and the Haitian please. I also hope the Invisible Man returns. Love Christopher Eccleston.

Who else thinks that Matt's dad is a rip-off of Onslaught from x-men? Just not with as many powers. I also didn't think Maury was in Sylar's head. I think that was all Candice. Maury was most likely the one messing with Angela, thus causing her to harm herself. However, I also think that pinning all of the murders on him is too easy.

I believe it was said that Kristen Bell was playing a young woman raised by the company, and therefore is a little messed up in the head.

I too was thinking that Kensei was alive in the future.

Who else thinks Matt was stupid-Does he watch T.V.? How about saying "First release Molly from her coma and answering some questions. And then I'll uncuff you." He's a cop. He should know how to interrigate someone.

Loved this new chapter of Heroes!! Some key points/thoughts

Peter scared to look in the box...lol
It tends to be that way with people who have no clue who they were. They fear that they won't like what they see.

Peter really is part of the family
When the guy whose name escapes me protected Peter and told him where to run away to, I was like way to have a strong family bond. The man even died for Peter. Loyal to the end...i like it.

Matt's dad pulled a fast one
When they 1st burst in and he appeared to be a drunk, I was like..he is not the villain. At least know we know what happened to Mama Petrelli when she was at the station. When the guy trapped both Nathan & Matt in their worst nightmares, I was like damn!!!Cool power!!!

Allowing Micah to play the piano
I liked it because Noah Gray-Cabey is a piano prodigy in real life.

Monica is a copycat
She can literally just copycat actions including ones she sees on TV. Another useful power...liking the interaction between Micah & her.

Matt has the potential to do more than just read minds
Plays into my theory of the heroes eventually growing when it comes to how they can use their powers. I hope the writers don't mess it up.

Favorite line of the night goes to Micah: "Don't even get me started on my mom"

They mentioned 9th Wonders again...yay
Since Isaac is dead we won't get to see any new issues. It is great to hear old issues mentioned though. I wonder what else Isaac has drawn in the comic that hasn't come to pass yet?

Way to make an entrance Nikki
When she brust through the door, I was like bad ass!!! I guess she was being held a patient against her own will since it seems like she was angry and wanted out. However, she tells Mohinder different...interesting

Kristen Bell made her debut
And there wasn't much of her to criticize just yet.

Cool to learn what Matt & Nathan's greatest nightmares were
With Nathan it was obvious...he did "lose" a brother after all. With Matt, I wasn't thinking that at all.

Monica's the new assignment
Interesting...the company is up to no good and we know that...yet Mohinder still took Molly there.. Such an idiot.

Elle's parents got her on a tight leash

I can't wait to meet them. Obviously they have parenting issues with their child!!

Next week's preview:
Sylar obviously comes clean to Alejandro and tell him that when he gets his powers back he is going to kill him and steal his own...frightening. Hopes he doesn't get the chance.

Keep up the good work...looking forward to more!!

My favorite part was the interaction between Monica and Micah. Micah is such a good little character, and the actor who plays him does quite a good job. (And isn't he a little musical genius in real life, too? Nice that they brought that here.)

I'm so sick of Hiro in Japan. So sick. I nearly changed the channel when those scenes came on, but I decided to stick it out. It's tiring, boring, tedious -- you name it.

Loved the scene between Matt and Nathan (interesting how you refer to Matt as Parkman, Casey) -- I definitely agree with everyone here. I couldn't help thinking, "How are they so easily duped by his genial manner? He put Molly in a catatonic state!"

I love Peter, but I don't like him with Caitlin. I was beginning to really like Ricky, so I was a bit saddened by his death. I was not blown away by KB, and I friggin' ADORE her. I also felt like her power left something to be desired. We saw a hint of it, but when she used it flown-bulled, we saw only part of it.

Give me more Micah and Monica and Peter. Keep the twins, Sylar, and Hiro in medieval Japan AWAY.

While I enjoyed this episode, particularly the whole Nathan and Parkman thing I have to say Kristen Bell left me cold.

I'm not sure what she going for, badass? If so that didn't work at all. Hmm was is unpredictable with a side of crazy? That didn't work. When she was on the phone with her father she seems more of a petulant child which she's clearly too old to be so that didn't work either.

She just didn't work period. Very disappointed.

When the boogeyman is afraid of something, you know you've got problems. Matt seems to be getting dumber with each episode. Molly called his dad the Nightmare Man for a reason. Common sense (and simple police training) should've told him not to trust his dad, or go in that back room alone. Mr. Parkman's powers keep making me think of the Shadow King from the X-Men comics.

Mohinder is also on a path to ultimate stupidity. Not only does he contact the company about Molly, but he helps them keep Nikki captive. I guess Matt never told Mohinder about the picture, and Mohinder never told Matt about his side job. Maybe if Mohinder had recognized Bob from the photo, he would've realized that Noah was right.

I wonder what they need with Nikki. They could've tagged her a long time ago, especially when she was working with Linderman. Is the company using the virus to take out dangerous people, or just eliminate the competition?

I kept laughing at Nathan's "cargo plane" line. Then it was sort of sad, considering the last person to fly with Nathan was probably his presumed dead brother.

Have we seen Isaac's powers represented that way before? It looked like the picture was already on the canvas. I always thought Isaac went into a trance state and didn't realize what he was painting until he finished. Now it looks like he was really filling in the canvas to match the image he already saw projected on it. I think it's cool that even though he's dead, we are still learning more about him.

I definitely saw the parallels between Elle and Veronica Mars. Most people underestimated Veronica (and I'm sure KB) as just another pretty blonde. That's how V was always able to catch people off guard. It looks like Elle will be doing the same thing. I can't wait to see how the character progresses and weaves into the other storylines.

I wonder if we're supposed to think that one of the guys from the photo is Elle's father. I would think not, since the guy would have to know by now that the twelve are being targeted. Then again, Bob didn't seem to know anything. Or does he.....

Mr. Bennett and the Haitian were in Moscow's Red Square. They must be on a stopover to Odessa, Ukraine, which I have visited so I can attest to the fact that it certainly does exist.

Kristen Bell's performance seemed way too Veronica Marish to me, but I am not ready to write off the whole character yet. We don't know anything about her or why she is the way she is. I thought she was an assasin, but she told the person on the phone (her father?) that she wouldn't kill anymore. Obviously she was just there to get Peter. And, I also like the idea that she was one of the people who had Peter which would explain that new power of his. I was really excited to have KB on heroes, so I don't think it's fair to completly bash her yet. If she were an unknown actress rather than the actress of a beloved character I think the bashing would be a little less and we would all be open to seeing where she is coming from.

I, too, am really tired of Hiro on ancient Japan but feel there must be a huge payoff (or, there better be anyway!) at the end of this storyline.

Loved, loved, loved that fight scene. It was edited so well!

Thank you to those who mentioned Noah Gray-Cabey is a musical prodigy! I completely forgot to put it in the blog! The amazing part of his talent, is that he is somewhat of a "copy-cat" (like Miss Monica, only in real life, ha!) when it comes to music. As early as age three, he was able to memorize his father's fingers on the piano and play it back. Amazing!

Kudos to Heroes for allowing him to show off his wonderful talent!
