Episode Recap: Family Night

Sorry for the delayed posting. I had one of those nights last night. Hope you guys forgive me!

Well tonight was another colossal failure for the men's team. Though both teams finally completed a dinner service, the men had plenty of undercooked food and even more communication problems, which again cost them a team member. (Though I'd say at this point, losing dead weight is of benefit for them!)

The show kicked off with Ramsay calling Ben a punk as he exited the previous eviction ceremony. Bobby (genius that he is) cornered Ben and said, "He's serious, huh? He mean's business." You think? I mean he's only giving away a quarter million dollar contract!

Instead of heading off to bed, the chefs are sent back into the kitchen to clean up after their last disaster. Despite some grumbling, most of the chefs team together and get the job done. But Corie's early exit from the kitchen angers some of her teammates — a move that comes back to bite her when she volunteers herself as the team leader, only to have her laziness the night before be revealed. Instead, the team puts their trust in Jen to lead them against the boy's elected leader, Ben, in the "pass-ta" challenge.

Each team has 20 minutes to make as much fresh pasta as they can to Chef Ramsay's standards. The best part of the competition for me was seeing dopey Matt standing there with his arms out long before the first noodle was ready to be hung. Luckily, Ramsay gave him some advice to rest his arms. (This bunch is brilliant, I'm telling you!) All of this is building up toward Hell's Kitchen's first ever family night, where they will serve pasta, hamburgers and onion rings to the kiddy crowd.

At the end of the 20 minutes (which Like Ramsay said showed more strength and enthusiasm than any of the previous dinner services), came the weigh in. Though the guys started weak, they delivered a "second arm" of beautiful pasta. But the girls churned out more quality product under Jen's leadership, earning them another victory and a trip to Santa Monica pier while the guys prepped all day. Though the prize still isn't as nice as the boy's yacht trip, compared to Ben's punishment (shoveling horse manure) it was a dream victory.

When the doors opened for dinner, both teams came out swinging, hoping to be the first to complete the full service, and thereby win the challenge. Both teams had early compliments from Gordon (Petrozza and Vanessa's appetizers were "beautiful"), but the guys quickly derailed when Matt served raw chicken wings to a youngster. Even though he's weird, he did stand up to Chef Ramsay and took his verbal lashing. Call me crazy, but I don't think it earned him any new respect from Gordon, though. And if that wasn't bad enough, he then began serving "hockey puck" burgers, which Gordon quickly threw all over the kitchen.

The biggest problem the ladies faced tonight was a serious burn sustained by Vanessa. For the second week in a row, the ladies let their flames get out of control, and when Vanessa stepped into help, some hot oil ran down her hand, prompting an exit from the kitchen and a trip to the hospital. Jen rallied her troops however, and kept churning out the tickets. (Glad to see Vanessa return, though we’ll see how she does with one hand next week.)

Bobby helped gain control in the men's kitchen, and when he earned Ramsay's compliments, Ben congratulated him, an action that infuriated Chef Ramsay since his team was 6 tickets from completion while the girls were finishing their last two. I like Ben, but he took a beating this week.

Ultimately, the girls finished their tickets, and came over to help the boys out. Luckily for Matt and Ben, Craig was again at his worst. He served "pass-ta" with the wrong sauce, and continued to not communicate with Chef Ramsay, despite his continuous demands.

When Bobby was asked to nominate two teammates, it was an easy choice to sacrifice Craig and Matt. But Gordon, as usual, had his final say, asking Ben (who he was extremely disappointed in) up to the chopping block as well. Although each had their share of problems, it was pretty much a no-brainer to send Craig home. (At least he can wear his hat again!)

Some final notes: I am upset to not be seeing more of Louross. I think he has potential, and I hope he steps up. (If for no other reason than to maybe hear Gordon call him a Smurf again.) Also, despite the fact that Jen really annoys me, she seems to be earning favor in Chef Ramsay's eyes. We shall see how that plays out. And finally, what was the with crazy Matt's comment about Corrie's cellulite?

So what did you think of tonight's show? Do you think the right chef went home? Who do you want to see step up/go home next week. Share your thoughts, and check back next week for more!

Hi Adam
Glad you finally got your blog posted. I checked earlier in the day and ended up going to a different blog and posted there. Looks like a lot of other people did too. Please continue to do this one though; I appreciate your taking it on. Hell's Kitchen is absolutely one of my most favorite shows ever, and I love reading about and commenting on the show.

Jen really surprised me this week. I haven't had a lot of love for her previously; she has such a mouth! But last night she really stepped up and did a great job. Hope this will put an end to some of her cockiness. Hopefully it won't make it worse!

Carley has turned into a major disappointment. How can she think that making herself an enemy of all is going to help her stick around.

I like Louross and Ben. Don't understand all the hate from Chef to Ben, unless it's a ploy to make him "step-up" more. Louross, we haven't heard much from, but that could be a good thing. Most of the other guys seem to be pretty pathetic.

jellygirl, I know what you mean about Matt, but I can't think of the muppet name either.

This is the first episode I've gotten to see this year since I'd been watching Biggest Loser. Having not seen the previous episodes, it's hard to judge the contestants, but just based on last night, I don't care for Corey or Matt. Corey wants to be a leader, but ditching her teammates like that is not leadership in the least.

I've watched Hell's Kitchen for the past few seasons, and I have to wonder about the sanitation practices of the contestants. Did they serve the pasta that had been hanging off of the arms of the contestants? Because I've seen some of the contestants wiping their noses on their jacket sleeves before. No one seems to wear gloves in the kitchen, when most state's health departments require gloves be worn in kitchens. Sorry to be gross, but I can't help but think about it, especially after that one girl tried to pull the spaghetti out of the trash last year to serve to a customer. Blech!!!

Ur Right Jellygirl Matt does look like a muppet and I agree with freakyjim that he does look like Sam the eagle. I knew Matt looked funny looking.

But anyway, I don't like Corey. If she tinks she is a teamleader she should of continued to help her team out in the clean up instead of going to bed early. I do have to say that Corey and Jen are equally annoying.

Oh great point shell162 about the sanitation of this kitchen. I hope they didn't use the same pasta during the challenge. It makes you wonder if someone from the health department is watching this show. And I also keep thinking about the spaghetti trash girl. I wonder if she is cooking anywhere.

There is no way they served the pasta from the challenge. Ramsey is a stickler for sanitation.

I think Chef might actually see a lot of potential in Ben. He's hard on him because he thinks he could really turn him into something special. I don't think he feels the same way about any of the other guys.

For the women, I think he's favoring Jen and maybe Corey.

And I agree. I'd say Ben and Jen are my favorites right now with Corey a close third.

The prize for the "Quickfire Challenge" SUCKED! Hard!

Sam the Eagle. Heh. Good one!

Soooo glad to see Craig gone. Now if they could just get rid of Corey too, I could actually enjoy the show a little more. However I am not routing for anyone in particular at the moment. This has been the worst season of candidates ever and I have no favorites.

Also couldn't figure out why Chef was riding Ben so much. I did consider the possibility of Chef trying to 'toughen' him up or push him to his potential, but good-grief! And as for them completing a service for the first time. Well, seriously, how hard is it to cook pasta, chicken and burgers? Although Matthew's chicken blunder is the top reason why I don't like to eat anyone's hot wings but my own!

It's still too soon to tell who is really worthy of such a high stakes prize since none of them show the combined talent of cooking well consistently, working well with their teammates and following instructions properly.

If I was Ramsey, I would be pitching the biggest fit over any one of these people winning the prize. At the end there will be 2 locked doors....

The best part though was Ramsey calling JP a donut since he didn't want to take his tie off!

Do you know why Ramsey was so ticked at Ben?
Matt does look like Same the eagle. lol

Thank god mini craig with his oversize chef hat is gone! Talk about dead weight!!

He looks like "Beaker"!! The guy who couldn't talk and was the scientist's assistant, I think. Anyway, where in the hell did they get these people? Jen, probably is the best, but that isn't saying much. Corie is an useless. She thinks the women are intimidated by her???!!! Please.
I do think Chef is trying to make Ben a better chef.

I've been thinking about Matt the Muppet and now I don't think he looks like Sam the Eagle.

He looks like some other muppet. Perhaps it's Telly Monster?

It's driving me crazy... maybe it's the Yip Yip alien on the right:

I love your post! Keep it up. Hell's Kitchen is one of my favorite reality shows on TV. This is starting out to be a very good and entertaining season. I must say I like the Black Gordon Ramsay. He's a hoot!! Matt reminds me of Son of Sam - Sam Berkovitz (sp?), remember him? I despise Corey - she's a beyotch and quite uggly to look at. I hope the men kick ass and Corey ends up going home.

Bert kind of has the cheek-to-neck thing going. And the angry eyebrows. But I think Telly may have a rounder head and the right nose for Matt. Here is another montage for comparison:
