September 28, 2006: I Am a Tree
First of all, how exciting was the news last Friday morning that Grey's beat CSI in the ratings? Never thought it would happen since CSI has been such a juggernaut ever since it moved to Thursdays from Fridays years ago. CSI (along with Survivor) caused CBS to take away the "Must-see TV" title away from NBC as far as Thursdays were concerned. CSI for me has always stood for Can't Seem Interested or Can't Stand It (and before a bunch of you tell me you like both shows, that's fine – I'm thrilled – it's just not my cup of tea). But I digress. Grey's beat CSI, and I was shocked. Now, on with the show....
Hello - Meredith couldn't choose between Derek and Finn, so she chose both! And shut up that McSteamy's back! But I'll rewind and say that I liked that Meredith kept going back and forth between the two of them. First it was Derek, then Finn. It was funny that Meredith spent the hour being obsessed about who to choose, while simultaneously, Cristina obsessed about not being accepted by Burke's mother. Speaking of which, how cool is it that Julia is Burke's mama and Shaft is his papa? If Julia is before your time, Dominique Deveraux should ring a bell. What perfect casting to have Diahann Carroll and Richard Roundtree play Burke's parents. Yes, Mrs. Burke was kind of bitchy, but she was nowhere near the Mommie Dearest I expected her to be, so I was happy about that (I enjoyed seeing that she had a soft side, like all good mothers). I hope they give Mr. Roundtree more to do in future episodes.
Peter Paige from Queer as Folk had me laughing several times playing Benjamin, the 32-year-old with a brain tumor that affected his impulse control. Imagine going through life telling people exactly what you thought of them. You just knew he was going to ask Derek about Meredith: "Is that blonde your girlfriend? Because the way you keep looking at her, you might as well just mount her right here and now." It was very sad that Benjamin died, especially since he influenced Meredith big time – he made her more impulsive and honest.
I always like when the patients have a positive effect on the doctors. Bailey took the cue from Mr. Hernandez (Javier Grajeda) who said he "went soft" and didn't watch over his son so he blamed himself after his son luged onto (and through) a tree. We knew Bailey went soft after she had the baby, so I'm glad to see that "the Nazi" is back, but not in full force since she asked Izzie to come back to work (awesome moment: "Enough muffins"). What made it believable was that Bailey said she was "partly to blame for what happened" and, had she not gone soft, she would have stopped Izzie.
Loved that Alex fooled around with an older woman in the bar's bathroom. Roxanne Hart (Chicago Hope) was great as the woman with lung cancer who surprisingly had never smoked or drank and felt she had to live life to the fullest, eating sweets ad nauseam and flirting with a young doctor.
I bet all of you Meredith-haters (I'm not one of them) absolutely cringed when you saw Derek and Finn both fawn over her and compete for her affection. I myself accepted that she couldn't decide between the two and wants to date them both for a while until she can make the right decision. I will say, however, that I've grown really tired of the Mer-Der elevator encounters. That huge hospital and they keep meeting - alone - on the elevator? Yeah right.
I was most impressed that Derek insisted he was leaving Addison no matter what Meredith decided. Killer ending with Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) walking out in a towel right after Derek broke it off with Addison ("Our marriage is over").
Other random highlights:
- Meredith calling Cristina a "dirty, dirty stripper." - Callie continuing to bond with the group (it was so kind of her to pretend the panties on the bulletin board were hers). - Meredith saying to Cristina that she misses "Dirty Stripper Cristina - she was fun and a lot less angry." - Cristina countering that she misses "Philandering Whore Meredith - she was trashy and much less idyllic." - Callie walking in on Mer & Der: "You guys should think of getting a hotel room or something." - Meredith temporarily wanting to choose Finn because he's "the guy that brings your roommate lunch when she's sad." - Drunk Addison calling Miranda "Amanda." Uh-uh. - Webber discovering Callie lived inside the hospital, but asking her politely to move out. - George being jealous and Callie thinking it was "insanely hot." - McSteamy in a towel: "This is awkward."
And finally: - Derek at the very end: "I feel much better now." So did I after I watched tonight's episode. What about you?

I'm glad that Meredith decided to date both Derek and Finn before she made a decision as to who she should pick. She never really dated Derek, they only had hook-ups. Plus, he was dishonest about his marital status. She doesn't really know him that well. She seems to like some of Finn's personality traits, but she doesn't really know him that well either. I also hope that Derek and Finn are shown dating other people, too, so that it doesn't seem like Meredith is the center of the universe.
Loved the show and all of the throw-away lines always make this show so interesting and real. It will be interesting to see how Callie interacts with the other housemates, as it appears she is moving in with them.

Loved tonights show! I was satisfied with Merediths decision for now, ofcourse I ultimately hope she chooses Derek (speaking as a non-Meredith hater)! Loving Callie more every week, she and George had some really great scenes tonight, and I thought it was cool that she claimed the panties! Christina and Burke were comical, and the ending was just perfect! Derek feeling bad until McSteamy comes out of the steamy shower! LOL, Loved that!

I like the choice of having Bailey take some responsibility for Izzie in order to bring her back into the program. I wasn't sure how they could justify it and I think this works. I appreciate Chandra Wilson's character more every week. I love the way she delivers her lines. She makes me laugh and also feel for her character.

Psssst, Dave....it was Addison that Derek was breaking up with, not Mere. (I know you know...just alittle typo).
This episode tonight was great. Although I do have a difficult time embracing Finn as a real potential candidate for Meredith. I just don't feel as though we've had enough time to really grab onto him (although the little ~against the wall~ kiss was grabbing!!) Mere loves Derrick. But, I did love that she chose to date them both. How fun would that be!
May I just say here and now Chandra Wilson deserves an Emmy. Big time! She is a star and I love to watch her...she's fabulous!!
Callie is really showing an awesome side. I'm loving her.
All in all, I love this show. What's not to love?

Okay, do people really call girls underwear "panties"? Maybe older people do, being 23, I don't know anyone who uses that word, it was just wierd that they used it about 20x during the episode.
This is the second episode I've watched of this show, I did like it more than last week's, maybe because I was drinking.

NoDayToday - I'm 30 (which isn't exactly "older") and I didn't find anything wrong with the word panties. I call them panties too. What would you have preferred them to be called?

I thought last night's ep was really good, but the ending caught me by surprise and I just loved it!! It was perfect.
I gotta get something off my chest though. I was perfectly fine with the Chief walking in on Callie dancing in her underwear. BUT, once George walked in on them sitting on her bed drinking coffee, she was still in her underwear! I mean seriously! If you're boss walked in on you in your underwear and then you both decide to have coffee, wouldn't you think that in the time it takes to make coffee you'd want to put some pants on?!?! It's your male boss for God's sake!
Okay, that's off my chest.
Loved the little moments. --Alex running to the bathroom to have sex with the lung cancer patient. --Alex's satisfied smile coming out of the bathroom. --Addison calling Miranda "Amanda." --The name calling between Christina and Meredith. --Everything about Peter Paige!
I know that ultimately Meredith will chose Derek, but I'm looking forward to the "dating".
Can't wait 'til next week!

I love this show too. I hate to throw water on everyone's parade, but in a real hospital Izzie would be lucky not to be charged with assault at the very least or even manslaugter.

Remember back in Season 2 when Meredith and Izzie took vows of celibacy and were knitting a sweater...and at the end of that episode, Izzie gives the sweater to Denny? Am I the only one who noticed that Izzie was wearing the sweater in last night's episode? Brilliant decision by the staff of Grey's to have her wearing it!

NoDayToday - I call them panties and I'm 27.
Jeraoranginx - McSteamy was Derek's BFF Mark until he [Mark] had an affair with Addy back in NY. Derek walked in on them doing the deed. Derek then moved to WA.
Loved seeing Cristina have a softer side at the end.

Did anyone see that coming? As soon as I saw her open the door, I knew McSteamy was in there!
I say panties too. Underware sounds and is too old! Panties just sound sexy!
