September 21, 2006: Time Has Come Today
I f---ing love this show. There -- I said it. And to use the title of the episode, "Time Has Come Today" for all us Grey's fans to rejoice -- we finally saw our season premiere! I want to say right away that I really enjoyed all the flashbacks -- and not flashbacks to scenes we've already witnessed ("previously on Grey's Anatomy"). It had a sort of Lost feel to it with the backstories -- not completely Lost-like since most of the scenes were things they've alluded to before, but it was great to finally see them:
- The very first time Izzie and Alex said "Seriously" to each other. - George introducing himself to Meredith in an oh-so "I'm Dorothy -- the small and meek" way. - Meredith flashing way back to her childhood and recalling her mother arguing with Dr. Webber at an amusement park. - Cristina meeting Burke for the first time. - Derek throwing Addison out of their home ("We're not 'Derek & Addison' anymore!"). - Derek's first meet-n-greet with Meredith at the bar.
Those last two were my favorites. Yes, it was wrong for Derek to seduce Meredith without telling her he was married, but now we got to see just how hurt he was after Addison slept with his best friend. Thank you, Shonda Rimes -- this was all much appreciated.
As for the present-day scenes, how much do we love Callie? Two of the funniest lines in the show were her's. The first was Callie to Finn (Chris O'Donnell): "I'm a total freak. I'm that girl in the back of the class who eats her hair." Shut up. Then when Meredith walked in: "I'm gonna leave the room for a long period of time for no reason whatsoever." Now that Sara Ramirez is a series regular, it will be interesting to see how Callie and George progress. The fact that he feels he can't reciprocate her "I love you" yet kills me. I was quite happy when he still couldn't say it back to her at the end. I want him to do it when he's ready, which may be "soonish."
The entire cast was fabulous as usual, but I felt the very best acting came from Chandra Wilson. Her scene with the (mysteriously) uncredited Steve Harris from The Practice made me (and my roommate, for that matter) cry. How horrible that Miranda couldn't comfort Omar physically after telling him his wife had died so she did it by having him touch his hand to the door's glass adjacent to her own hand. It's always nice to see those rare tender-Bailey moments.
A close second in the Emmy-caliber acting was fellow supporting-actress nominee Sandra Oh. Cristina crying and saying to Burke "Don't ever die" and Burke saying "I'll do my best" had me crying again.
Other highlights:
- The schoolgirl finally admitting to Addison that she was the one who secretly had the baby without her parents ever even knowing she was pregnant. - Bailey whispering "I'm so sorry" to the dead Denny. (Did I mention I cried several times?) - George calling Meredith "dark and twisty." - Izzie on the floor most of the episode looking very Charlize Theron-esque, and the scenes with her best friends George and Meredith laying on the floor next to her. - Addison washing, drying and then folding Meredith's panties into a Ziplock baggie, and then putting the panties on the hospital bulletin board under the Lost & Found section. Uh-uh! - George bonding under quarantine with Derek and asking if he ever told Meredith he loved her and Derek saying no, followed by George saying he told Meredith he loved her, which prompted Derek to encourage George to tell Callie he loves her "before it's too late." - Finn acknowledging to Meredith that they "weren't exclusive" and saying she might think she "doesn't deserve good things" but she does: "Derek -- he's bad for you. Me -- I'm a good thing and if there's a race -- if there's a ring, my hat is in." - Adele (the divine Loretta Devine) asking Richard to retire -- it's her or the hospital. - Izzie finally getting up at the end: "I'm ready."
Absolute best scene was also at the end when Derek said to Meredith: "I'm in love with you. I want you to take your time. You have a choice to make and when I had a choice to make, I chose wrong." Swoon.
What did you all think? I'm curious to see if you agree with me that this was a fantastic way to start the season. Seriously.

I think it was a GREAT episode. I loved that McDreamy acknowledged he made a mistake and that he loved Mer. It was really quite satisifying.
I also REALLY loved the fact I came online to see what everyone thought and found out Candian TV (CTV) aired the wrong episode last night. They aired episode 2 instead of 1 and now I know what's happending next week. WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO can't wait to see that with my own two eyes.

I am sooo overwhelmed! So much happened. I felt like I was Mer when Derek told her he loved her, and that he made the wrong choice. It's like your heart SO loves him, but is it the healthy choice? I want to believe him!

I can't believe it.
I must have misread the DVR description of the episode and thought it was one of those Lost or Desperate Housewife type of recap shows, so skipped it.
Carp.

So glad you mentioned that, Roxymarie. And thanks for not spoiling it here. Friendly reminder to all of you that this is not the place for spoilers. You can send spoilers to each other privately. I learned the hard way when I made comments about "next week's episode" once and people were like "Dave Anderson - please stop talking about what's in the previews for next week - I don't watch the previews since I hate spoilers..." etc., so I stopped doing that.

Oh to be a Canadian!!! I just read the ending for episode 2..and Holy S--T!!!! I absolutely LOVE spoilers but I don't want to be murdered so I won't reveal.
This first episdoe was so full of tension...it certainly put you right back to last May....everything and everybody on edge.
Loved, loved, loved Bailey saying good-bye to Denny (huge tears), McDreamy saying he chose wrong (a sigh and eyes watering) and then Cristina telling Burke (was getting worried about him as he was unseen for 55 minutes) "don't die" 0 (tears again). Can't imagine how anyone would be watching CSI at a time like this.

TooMuchTV, You aren't crazy. They did air a recap show first and then the new episode. Do what I do, I just set my dvr to always record new episodes of all my favorite shows. There have been times when I was pleasantly surprised to see that I didn't know something new was on but that it had been recorded anyway As for the show, LOVED IT! SERIOUSLY!

I KNOW some people route for Der and Mer.....I do NOT. He was hurt when he learned that Addison cheated on him, BUT he was physically abusive upon learning that (roughly pushing her and her out the door)and that just isn't McDreamy for me!
I know "LOVE" is supposed to be paramount, but Derek's cruelty and unforgivedness to Addison isn't justified and I do NOT like his character for that reason.

This show is truly at the top of its game. One thing I love the most about this show is how it interweaves the medical storylines with the character's issues. Bailey's was the most touching, with her desire to have stepped in with Denny reflected in Omar's desire to save his wife. Chandra Wilson and Steve Harris rock!
Addison's storyline about how secrets will come out was a close second, though, both in terms of her own infidelity and her discovery about Meredith and Derek. Posting the panties up on the board was fantastic!
The flashbacks were interesting, but I'm not sure they were necessary. However, they certainly weren't boring, so I can't complain too much on that front. And for new viewers, it was a great way to bring them up to speed without boring those of us who were returning.

Let me start out by saying that I am one of the biggest Grey's fans there are.
But I wasn't impressed tonight. Grey's has never been a flashback show before...why start now? Except for the last two, I don't really feel like they added much to the show.
And the plague?? Honestly. Couldn't they have thought of a better way to keep McDreamy from Meredith the whole episode?
I did like the Addison-with-the-panties and baby-in-the-trash storylines. I feel so bad for her, which is pretty good considering I was one of the biggest Addison-haters out there when she showed up on the season finale of season 1.
And despite my original misgivings, the ending was PERFECT. The last 10 minutes made our 4 month wait worth it. I can't wait for next week

Pretty much perfection for me. I loved the flashbacks because they gave us more of the story. It's going to be a wonderful season. I think I felt every emotion possible watching this show.

I agree with Dave's commentary.
I never watched this show and have spent this summer catching up on Season 2. Loved, loved, loved all the Bailey scenes. While she always acts so hard with the interns, it was nice to see her human side.
This has got to be one of the best shows on TV.

I love love LOVE this show!!! I thought the flashbacks were random yet perfectly placed and timed. In them, I don't think Derek was overly harsh with Addison. I thought he seemed pretty controlled actually, considering what he probably wanted to do.
The dark and twisty scene was hysterical and the placement of the Bailey/Omar scene back to back with George and Derek is a perfect example of this show -- you're crying one minute and laughing the next. Such a wonderful, amazing show.
I'm very curious to see what happens with the panties. The quiet, methodical way Addison laundered, folded and placed them in the ziplock, looks like she's finally had enough and won't take it anymore. Good for her -- she deserves better!! I keep trying to say I don't like Mer/Der but that scene in her kitchen, oh, it was wonderful and part of me cheered. Of course I also did a little cheer when Finn told her "my hat is in."
Kudos for another fantastic episode.
