October 19, 2006: Oh, the Guilt
As the episode's title hinted, overcoming guilt was certainly the ongoing theme tonight. The person most affected by her surrounding friends and fellow doctors was Izzie. My favorite two "Izzie influencers" were Burke and Webber. They both FTF'd her (Friends Tell Friends) — first Burke told her: "You quit. You quit being a surgeon. You have two good hands and you aren't using them. Feel guilty about that." And then I thought it was quite effective when Webber, trying to make Izzie feel better about the Denny incident, told her that way back when he was an intern, he too made a fatal mistake. But he stayed and he worked and he never made that mistake again: "Every day I get to save lives." Excitingly watching Cristina do the running whip stitch on a heart was the other turning point for Izzie. If only she'd frickin' deposit that $8,700,000 check! Cute and quick George-Meredith moment by the refrigerator at the end, by the way. (If you blinked, you might've missed Meredith go to grab the check and George swiftly block her hand and push it away, followed by a devilish George grin.)
But let's talk about our gallant Cristina. What an awesome moment where she saved Burke's ass — so naturally covering for his quivering hand during surgery by carefully asking permission to do the running whip stitch herself since she is an intern who needs to learn. Amazing. I can only imagine the sex Burke and Cristina had that night. Alex: "I guess sleeping with your boss has its perks." Best George line: "This sucks. Cristina gets sex and perks." And while we're on the subject of being gallant, T.R. Knight, I applaud your bravery this week.
So Addison finally told Derek the truth that she and Mark Sloan were more than a one-night stand, that she had been in love with Mark and lived with him for two months. Of course she wants Derek to have the brownstone! He better get more than just that damn trailer with the divorce settlement.
Derek: "All I want is Seattle. I want Seattle and I never want to see you again."
Derek took it even further with McSteamy after Mark tried to apologize "as a friend."
Angry Spice Derek: "You’re not a friend," as he walked out.
Derek was so devastated and pissed that he couldn't fathom telling Meredith he was happy she broke it off with Finn. I was halfway expecting him to grab her and make out with her on that elevator, but his mind was still concentrating on the Addison-Mark devastation.
Meanwhile, back at the (overpopulated hotel) ranch, Addison and McSteamy had some great postsex conversation.
McSteamy: "At least now you won't have to feel guilty anymore." Addison: "Shut up." (She beat me to it.)
Speaking of McSteamy, Callie's best line was to McSteamy himself: "You were sexier when you weren’t talking." Oh no she di-int. I felt bad for George not getting the hint that Callie did indeed break up with him. Not even a bucket of fried chicken and sci-fi video games would change her mind.
Loved how Alex and Bailey bonded at the end with Alex telling her he knew what Izzie was doing (that led to Denny's death): "I knew, but I didn't do anything to stop her. You weren't the only one." Bailey: "Alex, thank you." Never thought I'd see Bailey thank Karev for anything. It was nice to see all the interns try to defend their Bailey during the M&M (morbidity and mortality) conference, although Cristina was most concerned about getting "seats and snacks." I enjoyed Bailey retaliating towards Dr. Savoy (Todd Babcock) when she mocked his reference to her hormone levels.
After all the promos, I was looking forward to discovering just how the former husband and wife were attached and couldn't quite break apart after they were having sex. Oh my. Her IUD had dislodged from her uterus and it got hooked onto her husband's pierced penis (ouch) and it was embedded in her vaginal wall. Never thought I'd ever type that sentence. That was Tony winner Faith Prince (most recently on Huff) as the wife Sonya and Arye Gross (from the first few seasons of Ellen) as the husband Adam. Very funny having the daughter (Margo Harshman) walk in and see her formerly married parents in that... position. Once again, a patient had a good effect on one of the doctors — Sonya saying she was going to confess to her husband that she slept with her ex-hubby convinced Addison to fess up about the McSteamy truth to Derek.
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, it was very fitting to have the Diana (Justina Machado from Six Feet Under) story line. Bailey was back in true Bailey form, giving Diana inspiration and convincing her to have the mastectomy. Just in case you fast-forwarded and missed Kate Walsh's PSA, here's what it said:
Breast cancer affects everyone — the 211,000 women who will be diagnosed with it this year and those who love them. If you, a friend or a family member want to learn more about breast cancer and the fight against it, contact the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at www.komen.org or call 1-800-I'M AWARE (1-800-462-9273).
You can also go to www.fordcares.com to purchase Warrior Wear and Warrior Gear. 100% of the net proceeds are donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Go here to enter to win a visit to the set of Grey's Anatomy and a Ford Fusion.
Heads up for next Thursday 10/26: No new episode! ABC is repeating the first two episodes of the season from 9pm to 11pm ET. See you in two weeks.

Overall, good episode I thought. My favorite was the preview, when Christina tells Meredith that "it all isn't about you" or something like that ... FINALLY! Someone is finally going to tell Meredith that the world does not revolve around her. I hated her exchange with Callie ... Callie is trying to talk to her about having sex with someone who isn't George, and should she tell him? Meredith totally turns it around to her. I'm just tired of her ... can't it be called "Anatomy"? "Seattle Grace?" "Bailey's Anatomy?"

I think I was distracted the whole episode with Izzie carrying that check around. It made me so nervous, I kept thinking, "Deposit it already!". I tried to remind myself it was just a TV show, but it wasn't working. I'm glad that they didn't make it easy for the two couples to get back together by having Callie give in to George and Meredith and Derek kiss on the elevator. I'll miss seeing a new Grey's next week.

That check thing was making me uncomfortable. I liked that she found her way back to surgery.
I could have sworn that Derek had said something last season about Addison and Mark living together in Boston after the initial one-nighter. I must have read more into whatever he said. Interesting that Mark cheated on Addi while they were together. It explains why she can be so mean to him.
I could care less about Meredith and whoever she is with. I watch it for Christina and Burke, Addison, Mark, George, Callie and especially Bailey. I liked the Izzie and Denny story more than Izzie finding her way back story.

I had a different view regarding the comment about Callie trying to open up to Meredith. Its pretty risky to advise someone on whether you should tell a boyfriend you slept with someone else. In an earlier posting, someone pointed out that Callie doesn't have any friends. Maybe it was better that Meredith shared something about her self instead of how to deal with George.
I'm a little tired of the Izzie storyline. Is it guilt or loss she can't get over. How in love can you be with someone and not even know anything about them. She didn't know Denny was rich or that his parents didn't give up on him etc.
I really admire Bailey. How great it must be to act out a character that is so wise and self-aware.

I also noticed the pink ribbons dispersed throughout the episode for Breast Cancer Awareness month. One was on the refrigerator at the end when Izzie was putting the check on the fridge.

I liked the episode the most part. I just wish that Izzie would deposit that check. And she did know that he had money, or should've known, because Denny mentioned it while he was in the hospital at one point. He said something about being good looking, having money, etc. This was before they had actually gotten together, when he was still flirting. I was hoping that when Meredith told Derek that she had broken up with Finn, something good would come out of it, but he was too upset to do anything. Poor Meredith. I think things will work out during the next new episode. Hopefully. For all of you who are tired of Meredith and hope that they call the show something else and whatnot: the show is an ensemble show, but of course Meredith is going to be a big part of it because it's called GREY'S ANATOMY. After Meredith Grey. The show is about her and I guess if you don't like that then you should stop watching.
I really liked the episode, as usual, and I'm really mad that it's not new next week, but I can't wait for the next one. It really boggles my mind that I can love a show so much, when it makes me cry as much as I do, almost everytime I watch it. hehe.
Oh yeah, and T.R. Knight's news yesterday made me want to watch the show even more. Good for him!

Did anybody but me wonder how the, um, "attached" couple got to the hospital in the first place? And is it really believable that someone would get a nearly $9Million windfall and NOT take it?

Meredith didn't respond to Callie with a direct answer but instead asked her a question of the same nature because there is no direct answer to something like this. Callie didn't respond to her question either because she couldn't.
Meredith is not more self-aborbed than anyone else on the show. Everyone obsessed over his/her problem all day. Except for Alex, because he doesn't have many problems as of late. And Cristina, who can't talk about her problems with Burke because what they are attemping to do is wrong.

The best part of the Karev/Bailey exchange towards the end of the show was when she said, "Thank you, Alex." No one on the show ever uses first names except when there is some kind of bonding and I found it quite poignant when Bailey didn't just say, "Thank you, Karev."

The whole Callie/George/McSteamy thing makes me think of Gilmore Girls w/Loralei/Luke/Christopher. Callie dumped George like Loralei dumped Luke but the guys didn't realize it (thought it was just a fight) and then both women immediately slept w/someone else the same night!
When they panned over McSteamy in bed at the end I thought for a second, how does Callie's arm look so skinny? Then we saw it was Addison And how gorgeous is she?!
I'm a nursing mother of a 6 month old and the whole woman w/breast cancer story (and ignoring/blaming her baby) just broke my heart. The tears starting falling when Bailey was talking to her. Loved Bailey's line about her hormones to the jerk doctor from the M&M and then her "Thank you, Alex" at the end.

If I may barge in on Dave's post here for a moment.... [Waving to Dave]
I just did a Trivial Mattr's blog entry about what's really irking me about Grey's these days. The wife and I love the show, seriously we do, but something about it becoming a massive eye-roller.

When George showed up at Callie's place bringing chicken and video games, it just cracked me up because it just reminded of what sweet geeks they both can be.
And that look on his face--priceless!!!

I must have a thing for 'bitchy' characters because I LOVE Dr. Bailey!! She's my favorite, along w/ Christina. Sandra Oh is just magnificent. Of course, I also like Dr. Weaver from ER, hence my liking to both.
I thought it was a great ep and Izzie made me REAL nervous carrying that check around. That's the first thing I would've done -- after picking my jaw off the floor and coming out of a catatonic state. Heck, I'm terrified of walking around w/ $100 (which RARELY ever happens), I can't imagine walking around w/ 8.7 MILLION! Yikes!
I liked the fact that Christina saved Dr. Burke's shaky behind in the OR, but must he be SUCH a jerk to her all the time?? I'm kind of a newbie to Grey's so maybe that's the nature of their relationship but hot diggity, lighten up man!!
Oh and good for Dr. O'Malley (er, TR Knight).
Oh and I'm SOOO over Meredith it's not even funny! Must EVERYTHING be about her??

I am also over Meredith. I'm also over people who say "if you don't like her, don't watch ... the show is called Grey's Anatomy" for a reason. And while I am mature enough to agree that when the show started, it was about Meredith and her interaction with others - the true nature of an ensemble show is that we see more of everyone else separate from the main character. I do not view Meredith as the main character. I don't view anyone as the main character. So ... while I love MOST of this show, I am so over Meredith. Will I stop watching? No. Should I? If I was so immature as to not accept the show WITH her, then yes. However, I'm willing to overlook her (she has the occasional good moment) so that I can enjoy the characters that to me, really make the show the success it is. Bailey, Addison, Alex, Christina, Burke, Izzy. McSteamy! And one last point: this is a message board after all, where people post their opinions. I respectfully dislike the Meredith character, some people love her. An opinion ... Please don't let this become like a soap opera message board!
