November 9, 2006: Where the Boys Are

Somehow I knew the guys' camping trip was going to be a disaster. But at least it was a learning experience for everyone. George figured out that Burke's got a shaky hand and Callie slept with Sloan (thanks to Alex's big mouth). Alex learned that George has quite a temper. Webber discovered that bartender Joe (Steven W. Bailey) is in a loving relationship with a man named Walter (Jack Yang), which made Webber miss his wife Adele. Walter learned to never again go on a camping trip with straight guys. Burke realized that Derek has no male friends and George is rather nosy. Derek compared Sloan to "cancer — he infects everything" and yearned to start from the very beginning with Meredith. After last week's promos, I was right there with most of you, thinking Meredith had better not sleep with Sloan. Then I thought: "Nah, she knows better," so I'm glad I was right. Meredith's best moment with Sloan was her three rules: "No flirting, no talking about Derek and no giving me the face." Of course, McSteamy broke all three of the rules. However, what a great way for him to pick up the clue phone, returning to Meredith at the bar and seeing her with Derek. Excellent way to end the episode — Mer and Der introducing themselves to each other and truly starting over. We'll see how long this lasts.

Just as we were anticipating, Bailey put Cristina on the spot, asking Cristina why she erased her name from the assignment board. Interesting how Cristina never told her why she did it, but good for Bailey for giving Cristina menial tasks like sifting through that little boy's stool samples and retrieving the Monopoly pieces that he swallowed. It was a crappy job, but someone had to do it. "No surgeries for you!" cried Bailey. My favorite line of Cristina's was when Meredith told her that she was helping to remove a man's penis: "That should be me! I should be turning a penis into a vagina. That should be my penis!"

Speaking of the sexual reassignment surgery, Alexandra Billings was wonderful as Donna, the artist formerly known as Daniel. I was really psyched to see Alexandra in this role since, as a former Chicagoan, I have followed her career for more than 20 years. (I met her oh-so-long ago — one of the nicest human beings on the planet.) Alexandra is a transgendered entertainer/actress/singer who used to be known as Shante at the famed Baton Show Lounge in Chicago. She's been in the business for decades, but this role on Grey's is beyond huge for her. For more info on Alexandra, go here.

Also awesome was Clare Carey as Vicky, Donna's wife, and I thought it made the story line even more compelling to have Donna get breast cancer from all the hormones. Vicky wanted her husband Daniel back when given the chance, but it was quite nice to have Vicky come back at the end because Donna was her "best friend."

One of the biggest reasons that I could never be a doctor was what caused Addison to leave the hospital room and go into the bathroom stall and cry. I wouldn't be able to give patients tragic news like that. How horrific for a woman to have to deliver a baby knowing that it was dead. Alexandra Holden did a fantastic job as Jamie.

I was very happy to see Kali Rocha back as Sydney, this time as Izzie's peer counselor. Just when we thought Sydney was a complete nutcase, that final "I lost a kid" scene redeemed her big-time, and I really hope she comes back. And I don't think Izzie will avoid her next time.

So just when George returned from the camping trip all determined to talk to Callie, boom — his Dad's there as a heart surgery patient. Some guys never get a break.

Loved last night's show! I'm really thinking that Addison is pregnant. She wouldn't just break down like that under normal circumstances.

Yay for Christina holding her ground with Bailey and Yay for Meridith not sleeping with McSteamy!

The show was a great rollercoaster ride as usual. I almost fell off the sofa laughing at the slap-fight in the woods.

Thanks for the great post, Dave, and for the info on all the guest stars. I see these actors' names at the beginning of the show, and I never know who plays who(m?). The guests are always so great on this show.

I don't normally swear very much, but during the scene where the girl gave birth to her dead baby, I heard myself mutter, "That's f___ing horrible." I guess in my naivete (and because I've never been pregnant), I never thought about what happens when a baby is miscarried that far along. To go through the pain of childbirth when you know your baby is dead… I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

As for the rest of the episode, I got some chuckles out of the men on their camping trip. The fight between George and Karev was silly, but Dr. Webber's seriousness as he laid out the rules of open-handed combat was hilarious.

Also, I love how everyone dislikes Addison at first but she gradually wins them over. First the interns, then Karev during his rotation with her, and now Callie.

Last night was sooo good! I am 6 months pregnant and when that woman had to give birth to her dead child my heart broke. I could not even imagine. But she did a wonderful acting job.

I really liked the transgender male story. Donna was so convincing and his/her wife was great too.

I really like Callie! She is just so great.

OK, so this is really nitpicky of me, but I wish the writer's would pay more attention to continuity. Like, Dr. Webber's reaction when he realized that Joe and Walter were together was a bit strange, considering that in the first season we met one of his really good male friends who was flirting with George the whole episode, and whom Dr. Webber clearly knew was gay. However, it was interesting to almost see a repeat of the George-Alex duel, also from the first season.

I just recently had a miscarriage, so that scene just had me BAWLING like it was happening to me. I was no where near that far along, but still, I totally related to that character.

This is after I had hysterically laughed my ass off at the slapping fight scene. George got in a couple good hits that Alex totally deserved, and Burke was killing me with his motions, as if he was actually watching a boxing match. I have an uncle who does the same movements when he watches boxing, so it was even funnier.

I totally loved how supportive Callie was to Addison, and how Addison was cool about Callie sleeping with Sloan, no jealous hissy fits. This looks like a true friendship in the making.

Good for Cristina for sticking to her guns and protecting her man, but boy, oh, boy, that Bailey is out for blood, can't you smell it???

I loved Sydney last season, when she put Cristina in her place, so I was happy to see her back. Good for her to keep on Izzie the way she did and finally getting Izzie to vent about Denny.

Loved the ending, too. I knew Mer wouldn't go for Sloan--her heart has always been and always will be with Derek. But you're right, Dave, it'll be interesting to see how long it lasts this time around, what problems could pop up this time???

Sigh...

Yet another smoking hot man trying to get in McMeripuke's scrubs. *gag* *gag* *gag*

Then again it's McSteamy. Whose scrubs doesn't he want in? :D

I loved the episode though. The camping trip was hilarious. I love McSteamy's bedside manner. I love Addison, love the humanity of her tears in the bathroom, love her realization Callie had slept with McSteamy. Love their budding friendship.

The parents finding out their baby was dead was heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking. How awesome were all the guest stars? Thanks for all the information about them, Dave!

My favorite line in last night's episode was from Bailey to Christina after she asked Christina why she erased her name from the board...."don't give me that confused look, it annoys me" or something like that. It is so true. When Yang doesn't want to answer a question, she tries to act like she doesn't understand what the asker is asking.

My one little nitpick so far this season....how many times can we watch Yang and Burke give the "eyes" or "the look" to each other over their masks in the OR's?? It looks like we'll get yet another similar scene next week. They need to move the Burke Shaky Hand story along....it is dragging.

Great episode.......keep 'em coming!

Oh, one more thing....where is Meredith's mom? That story just seems to have died out along with Meredith's dad and his new family.

There is more to Meredith than Derek and this was focused on alot in season 1 and 2.

What happened?

I guess I'm in the minority here, but this wasn't my favorite episode. It was ok, but not great.

I did really like the Addison/Callie story line, though. That was heartwrenching. I know a couple of women who faced that same scenario of knowing they would be delivering a stillborn child. It's tragic and so sad. I was glad Addison broke down - and then Callie later in the episode. So poignant.

Izzy was also terrific. I really hope they honor Katherine Heigl with an Emmy nomination. She deserves it!

The rest of the stories were just so-so for me.

Oh, I said it last week and I'll mention it again: Would someone PLEASE do something with Meredith's hair? Why all the guys are fawning over her I will never understand. She's a big ol' frump lately.

I loved the episode! Who didn't crack up watching the chief pulling his wheeled luggage on a camping trip, and with the picnic basket the coincierge packed up for him. It was hysterical. I also liked the far off scene of all the men walking across the bridge, just like the scene in the hospital when all the interns walk along the "bridge" following Baily. Can't wait for next week, we get some Mcdreamy lovin'!

I totally loved how supportive Callie was to Addison, and how Addison was cool about Callie sleeping with Sloan, no jealous hissy fits. This looks like a true friendship in the making.

Amen. I loved when Callie was like, "Don't make me climb over that door because that would piss me off and also, I don't know you that well." But it seems like she and Addison are going to connect pretty well in future, which should be good. I always thought Addison should seek friendship with Izzie, but Callie makes sense too.

The Women of Grey's Anatomy need to come together to fend off the McSteaminess that is Mark Sloan! He just likes to get with everyone, doesn't he? I was surprised with his kindness towards Donna and her situation though, so I suppose that's a good thing. But he needs to stop breaking rules 1, 2, AND 3! Good for Meredith for not losing her panties to him. Good call, Mer. And a good call on reintroducing herself to Derek. I swear, I'm not a huge Mer/Der fan, but I just want them to stop dragging it out so much. They should be together. Now. And starting over is the best way to do it, so kudos for the writers for getting us there.

There are so many little things I love about this show. I was "awww"ing at Izzie zipping up George's jacket and baking for his camping trip. And I'm glad he had a handle on camping so it wasn't a "Poor George" scenario. I also loved seeing Addison's cute glasses come back.

I'm so glad Bailey's on the warpath. Good for her. I love the delicate balance of Nazi+Mommy and lately they've let the Nazi side slip a little bit. How perfect for Cristina's actions to put us back in that direction. I feel for Cristina's situation, but ultimately I'm on Bailey's side in this!

I kinda liked that they didn't have such a cohesive theme this week. It allowed for me to feel more for the cases, especially the stillborn birth. Goodness gracious, but that was gutwrenching. That little boy was obnoxious, but it was good for him to sass Cristina. Cristina needs sassing. The SRS storyline was also touching. Love that being best friends was the foundation of their relationship. I'm glad to have Sloan onboard just to be able to cover these kinds of surgeries.

All in all, another solid and enjoyable Grey's episode in the bag.

I LOVE this show. I am getting very annoyed with the conceit of McSteamy. I actually think he likes Meredith more to get to McDreamy. It seems like he may actually enjoy "taking" McDreamy's women since he was really trying to get Meredith.

Do you think Preston will open up about his hand before operating on George's dad? Or do you think he will take a chance and operate anyway? He shouldn't be able to use Christina since Bailey has banned her from surgery. Interesting to see how this tunrns out.

vjw, I'm with you. I only found this episode to be 'eh.' I discovered that if you take the cast out of the hospital I have no interest in them at all.

And I don't get why all the guys want in Meredith's scrubs. She's a walking train wreck and doesn't even have that nice a face.
