November 2, 2006: Let the Angels Commit
I bet all you Meredith-haters screamed "Yes!" when Cristina said: "Everything is not about you, Meredith." I would've laughed harder had they not used it in the coming attractions and promos, but either way, that was a good line regardless of how you feel about Meredith. I personally enjoyed Meredith tonight in this commitment-themed episode — especially in the closing scene when she finished Derek's sentence by suggesting he "take some space" and clear his head, as if she understood, followed by her "I'm here for you" to Cristina.
How about that troublemaker sister of Derek's, though? Seems like Nancy flew in to town just to stir the pot, but I liked that she and Derek played nice at the end, even after she admitted to being one of the many women who had slept with Mark Sloan. Lame opening scene, though, with Meredith's barging in to the trailer as Derek's standing in just a towel and not immediately telling (the "slutty intern") Meredith, "She's my sister." That was Embeth Davidtz as Nancy. (She was in Junebug last year, but came to prominence in Schindler's List and later in Bridget Jones' Diary.) Since Derek has four sisters and no brothers, I look forward to seeing who might play the other three sisters some day, as well as his only living parent — his mother. As for the lack of brothers, it makes more sense now that Derek was devastated when he discovered that Mark, who was like a brother to him, had been sleeping with his wife at the time.
While we're on the subject of McSteamy, loved the exchange between Mark and Callie, with Alex listening in behind them with that "Wait a minute... " facial expression. I liked that Callie's summary of her sex with McSteamy was "dirty" (even though he claimed he pleased her "three times"), prompting her to finally be nice to George. My favorite line was Callie's to George: "Don't chase me anymore... unless you're ready to catch me." That whole ham-and-eggs analogy that George got from his patients was crackin' me up, especially when George referred to himself as the chicken in the relationship ("putting the eggs on the plate") and calling Callie the pig with the ham. Callie: "Did you just call me a pig?" Her face was hilarious when she walked away from him.
Cristina was quite intense tonight — so bound and determined to do that "humpty dumpty" surgery that she wiped Bailey's name off the scheduling board, and poor Bailey thought it was Webber or Burke not trusting her with the risky procedure after the Izzie debacle. Bailey's catching Cristina as she was making changes to the board at the tail end should make next week quite interesting, especially since Cristina's been doing such a fanciful job of covering up for Burke's shaking hand.
After so many of you questioned why a hospital would allow Izzie back, it was more than appropriate tonight for Bailey to tell Izzie that she wasn't allowed to do anything of substance — just observe. You knew it killed Izzie to keep quiet while that patient Gretchen (Jillian Bach) tried to convince Meredith that she accidentally burned her hand while studying a week before having to again take the bar exam. But it was a perfect time for Izzie to shine, finally getting Gretchen to admit it wasn’t an accident. Izzie just had to give her that "trust me, I've been there" look. Luckily, even Webber took notice and told her, "Welcome back, Dr. Stevens."
Some awesome Alex moments tonight — the best was during the surgery on the woman with two uteruses, with Alex talking directly to the baby that was in danger, thereby saving it. It sure became obvious to Mark that Alex belonged back working with Addison and was more fascinated with a woman's reproductive organs than with Mark's DMV renewal. How much do you want to bet that Alex and Addison get it on in future weeks? Hot. Oh, and, let's not forget that Alex and George are jealous of the preferential treatment that Cristina seems to have been getting, with Alex going: "Maybe I should sleep with Burke."
Noelle, the gal with the two uteruses, was played by Liza Lapira, and the few of you who actually watched Huff on Showtime know that Liza was Oliver Platt's feisty assistant on that show. And while I'm talking about someone on a show that more people should've watched, that was Edwin Hodge, one of the stars of the gone-too-soon series Jack & Bobby, as Noelle's fiancé, Greg, who freaked out when he found out he was the father of only one of the two babies. Fortunately, Greg finally showed up after Noelle had the baby boy, and one of the best moments was Greg's saying to Noelle, "But how's our little girl?"
Rounding out the guest cast was Francesca P. Roberts as the wife of the man who got the "humpty dumpty" surgery. You probably recognized Francesca since she's guested on tons of shows, but she seems to play a judge more often than anything else (like on Boston Legal and Ally McBeal). Great Cristina moment when she related to the woman and made her feel better with: "You are just looking out for your husband. You do exactly what it takes to protect him, and it does not make you horrible. It makes you smart."
Other random highlights:
— George acting as Cristina for Meredith: "McDreamy was doing the McNasty with McHottie? That McBastard!" — Meredith acting as Izzie for George: "Seriously... seriously." — Izzie to Meredith: "McDreamy's sister is McBitchy!" — Burke's line (alluding to Isaiah Washington's recent controversy): "Everybody loves a scandal."
OK, it's been a while since I've whined about this, but do any of you miss the opening theme song like I do? I know ABC's trying to maintain the lead that Grey's has over CSI and doesn't want anyone to change the channel, but come on. We haven't gotten the "Nobody knows where they might end up.... Nobody knows.... " opening theme once this season — not even once. Am I alone here? Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret.

Loved this show! One of the strongest so far this season really. The "ham and eggs" bit was hilarious and McBitchy was so perfect--there are no words I adore Alex. There's nothing else to say but when he's bad he's so bad and when he's sensitive it makes you forget he's married with an enormous family in real life b/c you're thinking of throwing yourself at Justin Chambers. *ehem* Oh and Derek with his shirt off and tousseled hair. Thank you Shonda Rhimes!
We already knew he had 4 sisters from season one in the rape victim episode I believe. He was telling Meredith they're very girly, tons of kids and would be there at his bedside but that poor girl was all alone (I think later in the season he says he has 9 nieces and nephews but not positive and if he didn't give the exact number 4 before he talks about the sisters here too).
I too miss the theme song and also liked Meredith in this episode.

I don't miss the theme song. I used to fast forward through it anyway. I just want to get to my favorite show. I loved the McBitchy and McBastard lines!! HI-LARIOUS!!!! I didn't understand the ham and eggs analogy though. I like Meredith and her self-absorbed being. She reminds me of when Ally Mcbeal was on and the pretty blonde asked Ally what made HER problems so much more important than every one elses and she replied "Because their mine". Did they ever explain WHY the McBitchy sister was allowed into areas of the hospital only staff should be in? Was she fascinated with the two baby deal because she's also in the medical field? I must've missed that reference. Still love this show.

It was mentioned very quickly that Derek's sister is a OB/GYN. I think that is why she was allowed to observe the surgery. I think the ham and eggs analogy refers to if you are "committed" or not. If you are the pig, and provide the ham, you are no longer a pig. You have given yourself fully. If you are the chicken, and provide eggs, you are still a chicken. You have only given a part of yourself. I thought this episode was great! And I really miss the song in the beginning as welll.

Question re: the most-overdue line of dialogue in TV history, "Everything is not always about you, Meredith."
Wasn't it, like, barked out, loudly and angrier, in the promo? But last night, it was almost mumbled. I also (perhaps incorrectly) recall Yang turning to look at Mer when she barked it.
Were we bait-and-switched? Did someone get cute in the editing room? Did Grey's read my blog entry on the subject and opt to play down the moment?
Off to newsland....

I don't think Cristina 'wanted' to do the humpty-dumpty, but that she HAD to do it, in case Burke needed help.
It will be interesting to see how Bailey reacts to Cristina's board-editing next week!
McSister annoyed me, but what an expression when she learned that McSteamy and Addison had been doing it for months...

Actually, Matt, I think Grey's did read your blog b/c I cut and pasted it on their writers' blog. And Shonda&Co. read the blogs.
It was a great entry btw.

McDreamy all wet and naked in just a towel - YOWZA!!!! Best opening scene yet! I also didn't fully understand the whole chicken/pig egg/bacon thing, but I loved Callie asking George if he just called her a pig - priceless! And I loved the George and Meredith exchange in the elevator - McDreamy/McNasty/McHottie/McBastard - I had to write it down so I could remember it today at work! LOL! Another great episode!

I really enjoyed last nights episode. I thought it was soo good!
I am really happy to see that Alex misses working with Addison and the babies. I to hope they hook up.
Is it just me or was Christina so annoying last night! When she was talking to that wife and cutting Burke off I wanted to scream!
McBitchy was soo good! I was glad when Derrick told her to shut up and eat her lunch. Or he said something like that.
I am loving Callie more and more! She is so pretty.
All in all great show last night!

This was by far my favorite episode of the season. It was funny, yet poignant and stuff happened that really moved the plot forward. Something happened that involved every character (a feat I thought near impossible with the way the cast has grown) and actions that you wouldn't think would effect another character did (Mark/Callie talking about their tryst gives Alex something to toy with, Buke/Christina's action ended up playing a role in Baily's struggle etc). I loved it - Grey's at it's best.
I happen to LOVE Meredith, but I also loved Christina's line. Meredith is selfish - but even so it's actually sad. The way she thinks she is helping people is by sharing her problems, she thinks it tells them that they can open up to her the way she opened up to them, or that they aren't alone. Every time she has one of those awkward lines I know exactly why she says it - it's not that she's SO self-involved (though she is) it's that is her way of helping. Is it annoying? Heck yeah! And someone needed to call her on it and she has to learn that people don't like that way of reaching out. But it's real. Everyone gangs up on Meredith, but not one of these people is perfect and we don't seem to harp on and on about Christina being cold, Izzy being too emotional, George having no spine etc. Do we expect the main character to always be Mary Richards? I love that she too is flawed. It's great and this was a great episode of Grey's!

Alex was the man last night. It will be interesting to see if Addison allows him back in the OBS rotation, and how George McBlah will handle that. He seemed so inept in the OR trying to hold the baby still.
I thought interns had no say in their rotations. Just a thought.

I'm glad Meredith understood what Derek was saying about needing time.

Oh my! I feel the same about the theme song. I loved it...it sums up what the show is about. Let me tell you if folks change channels because of a theme song then they are not COMMITTED. Let them go and bring back the song! I'm here Margaret...you're coming loud and clear. BTW..great show as always. It's redundant to say more.
