November 16, 2006: Staring at the Sun

The three words that kept going through my head while watching this episode were, "It's about time...."

— It's about time... that someone (George) noticed that Cristina's been covering for Burke's shaky hand.
— It's about time... that Meredith stopped being dark and twisty and started having a more positive outlook on life.
— It's about time... that Alex kissed Izzie again. Even though she wasn't ready for it, it got her mind off her mourning.
— It's about time... that Richard focused on Adele and stopped visiting Ellis.
— It's about time... that someone (Addison) witnessed Sloan asking his interns to do menial tasks.
— It's about time... that Derek attempted to be more civil with Addison while at work ("bright and shiny") and to "peacefully coexist" with her.
— It's about time... that someone besides Cristina (George) offered Burke some help.
— It's about time... that George's family realized what a good doctor he is, thanks to Cristina.
— It's about time... that someone (George) told Cristina to stop being a robot and try being human.
— It's about time... that someone (Alex) allowed Izzie to do something besides merely observing.
— It's about time... that Addison took her wedding ring off. But she didn't need to throw it in the water. Such a melodramatic way of telling herself to move on.
— It's about time... that Shonda Rhimes allowed the multitalented Chandra Wilson to sing on the show. Her "God Bless the Child" over the phone to her son at the end kicked ass.

Another great episode, and my favorite actor tonight was T.R. Knight. So much was going on in George's head! His father (George Dzundza) was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus but also needed a valve replacement in his aorta; his brothers (Greg Pitts and Tim Griffin) were teasing him for not being a "real doctor"; he was obsessed with Burke's trembling hand/Cristina's cover-up; and let's not forget that Callie slept with Sloan. Awesome moment when he freaked out and couldn't tell his father the diagnosis, so Cristina stepped in. It was nice that Cristina spoke up for George to his dad: "George is the best intern. You raised a good person." When Cristina shows her rare human side, it's always a treat.

The most effective patient story line was definitely about the little girl Mia (Brooke Bryan), who was accidentally hit by an SUV driven by her nanny Anna (Annie Campbell). Mia preferred the company of Anna over her working mother (Myndy Crist) and father (Paul Cassell). What a learning experience it was for Mia's parents when she kept asking, "Where's Anna?" But that was quite a cop out that they fired Anna. Luckily it was only temporary. I'd be interested to hear from you working parents out there who have children cared for by nannies while you're at work. Could you relate? What did you do to avoid a situation like tonight's? I totally respect those of you who are successful with your parent-child-nanny relationships.

Much less effective was the pectoral-implant patient story line, although I liked that it gave Alex and Izzie a fun way to bond again. Frank (Matt Winston) constantly referring to himself in the third person was beyond annoying, but I enjoyed when Alex and Izzie began doing it when speaking to each other.

How ironic that just last week, several of you were asking, "Where the hell is Ellis?" (OK, you didn't say "hell".) And there she was tonight. Not having Richard visit anymore may help her condition and might make her more appreciative of Meredith's visits.

How much of a jerk is Mark Sloan? McSteamy turns into McMoron when he opens his mouth. He needs to just smile (while being shirtless), be a brilliant plastic surgeon (with his shirt on) and never speak. Please. Loved Izzie's sneezing out "sexual harassment" to him.

Other highlights:

— Callie explaining Mr. O'Malley's condition to him and to George's brothers in terms that they could understand. Looks like Callie wants George back... but does George want Callie back?
— Seeing Izzie smile again.
— Meredith trying to make George feel better about Callie sleeping with Sloan: "Us with the boobs? We make a lot of bad decisions."
— Cristina's answer to Mr. O'Malley when he said, "You're a smart girl": "Yes."
— The ending, in which all Cristina had to say to Burke regarding George was "George knows."

Warning for next week: Even though next Thursday is Thanksgiving, ABC is surprisingly airing a new episode. And it's super-sized — since Primetime is airing that night afterwards, they are giving us an extra 10 minutes or so. To be safe, add an extra half hour if recording Grey's, just so you don't miss any of it (and if you have TiVo or a DVR, set it to record Primetime as well).

Working mothers have a love/hate relationship with their children's caregivers. I remember my children's babysitter telling me how much my baby loved scrambled eggs and jelly, a combination that crossed my eyes. That she knew his favorite food when I didn't hurt more than you can imagine. I think last night's show was right on. The first instinct would probably have been to blame the nanny and jockey for first place for the child's affection---proof of parental devotion. The end was very realistic, and no the nanny will not lose her job. The parents and the child are lucky to have such a devoted caregiver. The rest of the show rocked.

Very touching episode all around. I love shows that make you think, not about the show itself, but about your life. That being said, even though I have no children and therefore can't relate to the parent/nanny storyline, it touched me very deeply. It's a stark reminder of what the pursuit of better and bigger things in life could possibly do to a child. My only complaint from a common sense point of view is why has Chief Webber put a stop to Yang and Burke working so closely together when they are emotionally and physically involved. I don't work in a hospital, but I don't think that sort of thing would be allowed. Because it's TV, right? :) Here's hoping that Callie and George can work things out...I loved their dynamic together!

I really loved the show tonight. Finally - an episode that wasn't dwelling on who should Mer or Derek choose. I felt like it was a good "drama" last night. Good stories all around and not focused on one doctor. Very good. I loved Bailey singing at the end.

As always.....the show ROCKED. Bailey singing to her son brought tears to my eyes.
I was/am truly lucky/blessed/fortunate that I did not rely on outside help taking care of/raising my 4 children. I was a "stay at home" Mom. I did not work outside of the home til my youngest went to grade school (she is NOW a Sophomore in College!!)
I can relate to the parent/nanny situation. My oldest daughter and her 2 little girls (5 & 2) live with me and my husband. Since I am no longer working, I take care of the little girls. There are days that I am called Mom instead of Nana. The girls come to me for whatever they want or need. I know that bothers my daughter sometimes but, I do stress to the little girls that when their Mom is home from work, that is when they spend time with her. It's hard to separate what our roles are in the girls' lives but, at least we are there for them and they know that we love them.

I can relate to the parents/nanny storyline but from the other side. I was a nanny for a wonderful little girl and when i saw what happened on the show i thanked my lucky stars that something like that never happened to me. It's very hard trying to keep a balance and keep the child as involved in the parents life as keeping the parent aware and involved in the child's. I loved how grey's resolved it in the end because i felt so bad for Anna, she seemed so distraught and incapable of doing intentional harm to that child that the moms reation to it, although realistic, pissed me off.
- On another note, George's reaction to Callie explaining the situation to his family wasn't that good for me. I mean at least a little smile or something to show that he appreciated the help or something so Callie has some hope would have been nice. I hope they work it out:-x

Last night show's rocked, the idea of Meredith and Derek deciding to be "bright and shiny" really cracked me up, I knew it wasn't going to last that much and I like'em dark and twisty. I loved all of Christina and George's scenes: "stop being a robot..." and I also really liked that finally people called out Sloan on his ways: treating the interns as maids and the "sexual harrasment" sneeze was great I loved how much Izzie smiled through out the episode. Now when George told Christina about Burke and Bailey was right there I wonder how much she heard..., oh her singing kicked a$$ btw.

What a voice on Bailey! I cried though much of that whole "sing-over" at the end 'cause it covered so many different aspects of the show...I have to say that George isn't my favorite character but I thought he was excellent last night - without even having to say anything, his expressions and the way his head and face kind of twitch show the depth of his emotions and boy was he hit from all sides both last week and last night!

I also thought it was funny when Alex and Izzie referred to themselves as Alex and Izzie and also when Izzie was caught feeling Alex's and Frank's pecs...the scene could not have been as funny if no one else saw her doing that! Good scenes between them throughout!

Good interaction between Baily, Addison and Callie while they were observing surgery...and there does seem to be something from Addison and Derek's past about them not having children - at some point another poster questioned a possible pregnancy or miscarriage...I hope more of that or at least their past will come out - she and McSteamy look pretty hot on next week's TVGuide, BTW!

Burke and Christina next week - looks awesome! I am thankful for a new episode next week on Thanksgiving night!!!

I really loved the way the actors handled the scene when Callie explained to George's brothers what was wrong with their father. They truly didn't understand what George was saying, but Callie's analogy made it clear to them. They didn't have to act or speak their understanding -- you could clearly see the tears in their eyes as understanding dawned -- awesome!

Loved the show last night.

One complaint:

Would someone please tell Patrick Dempsey to enunciate! His mumbling gets on my nerves. Reminds me of Victor Newman on Young & The Restless.

Speak up!

This show never disappoints.

Loved Derrick & Addison last night.
Loved Izzy & Alex talking in third person.
Loved George & Christina last night.
Loved how Izzy is always there for George and vice versa.
Loved Bailey.
Loved Addison & Callie's growing friendship.

I'd like to see more of McSteamy in terms of character development.

I really enjoyed last nights episode! Nothing bad to say about it! I am very lucky in that I am expecting my first child and will be able to stay home with her. But I did like what Mer said to Bailey about why have kids if you will never be around. I mean I know people work and have to but if you can stay home or work less why not?

Another great episode. I like the way that they are making Bailey conflicted. The parents with the nanny struck a nerve with her. She is questioning how good a job she is doing at work while she still wants to be connected to her child.
Also, the whole Sloan storyline is a waste of time for me.

Great episode. The nanny scenes broke my heart. I have a 9mth old girl at home who has a nanny that has been with me since she was 5 days old. One of my great fears was the nanny being mom but so far I have been extremely lucky. We pay extra and she does all of the house work and laundry so when I get home my daughter gets my undivided attention. I told my nanny when we hired her I am Mom and don't forget it, seems a little harsh but you don't make it clear from the start what can you say later. I am blessed with my nanny and hope that if something ever were to happen I will remember that.

How come when Mer was with Sloan he let her in on the patient and the surgery and all that... Then when he has Alex...its all about doing errands for him?

I thought it was a great episode too.
George is really pissed off at Callie for sleeping with Sloan. She doesn't know thats why he is being so cold.

It was nice to see the old Izzie back. I don't like her all dark and gloomy. I think shes a bore when she is glum.
