March 22, 2007: My Favorite Mistake

Last week, I was glad to discover that I was not alone in my "thumbs down" feelings about George and Izzie hooking up. Seemed like no matter whom I spoke to about it, and as evidenced by the majority of the comments here, the overall reaction was "ick!" So I was happy to see the word "mistake" included in the title of this week's episode. I got my wish that George wasn't going to remember any of it. Initially. Great "Ohmygod, I left my baby on the bus!" moment tonight when the hungover George suddenly, amid his new father-in-law's prenup offer, flashed to his night of passion with Izzie. They should have played Celine Dion's "It’s All Coming Back to Me" as George dashed out.

Since just about all of us can agree that George and Izzie's canoodling was indeed a faux pas, are you with me that the best scene tonight was the two of them inside the linen closet at the hospital? Not one word of dialogue. All George had to do was give his best friend a look of despair, as if to say: "We made a huge mistake and we can't do it again." You know I was scared briefly when they first walked in there that there'd be that usual linen closet makeout session we've seen several times before with different couples on this show. Thankfully, they did not go there.

But I will say that I was surprised to see Izzie so shaken up about it. If anyone was going to sulk, I figured it’d be George. Sure, George was McSulky a bit as well, but his sulking was more guilt-induced. You could just tell how devastated he was that he did what he did behind Callie's back: "This is our secret." Izzie (reluctantly): "OK." I always expect to see Izzie sulk about Denny. But about George? Get over it, girl.

How much did we love Alex again tonight? He has been such an inspiration and help to Ava, the Artist Formerly Known as Jane Doe. I was rather amused when the two of them were going through the computerized drawings of her new face choices and Alex was describing each possibility. After detailing "Maggie" and then "Elizabeth" and finally "Ava," I thought to myself: "Well, I'd probably go with Ava, since she looks the closest to Elizabeth Reaser.” My favorite moment of theirs was right before her reconstructive surgery when she asked Alex: "You here to keep my baby alive?" Alex: "I am."

Nice progress between Cristina and Burke. I liked that Cristina contemplated "going back to how it was" and to "be kind — rewind," so how ironic that Burke just wanted the opposite: "I believe I've grown. I'm not that guy anymore. I'm not interested in going back." Art imitating life much? How kind of Marlow (Roger Rees) to tell Cristina that she "should be ready to marry" and that Burke "should understand that." Awesome end scene between Burke and Cristina when she agreed to a small wedding ceremony, but "nothing religious." Had to be "at City Hall" and "no veil." Just picturing Cristina in a wedding veil (or as she put it, a "mosquito net") cracked me up.

Other highlights:
— Derek admitting his paranoia about Meredith's almost drowning to the Chief: "She gave up. I close my eyes for a moment, it's like she's back in the water."
— Sloan's "I'm that good" line to Jane Doe, with Addison following with: "He is. It's annoying."
— Izzie asking Addison for advice and Addison asking: "What am I — the go-to person for adultery?" followed by "God wants you to be an adulterer?" Izzie: "He got a virgin pregnant by magic. God is not playing by the rules."
— George admitting to being a former Mathlete.
— As always, terrific guest stars: Michael Boatman from Spin City as Mr. Kendry (the foot amputee — hey, there's always Dancing With the Stars); Catherine Dent from The Shield as Cathy Rogerson (the one with the congenital disease FOP — no, I will not write that "I found her performance to be a bit stiff"); and Elisabeth Moss as her beyond-annoying daughter Nina. (She plays that kind of character quite well — remember what a nuisance she was as Zoey Bartlet on The West Wing?)
— Speaking of guest stars, what perfect casting to have Hector Elizando as Callie's father. You know that one of the biggest reasons George feels he can't tell Callie about his night with Izzie is that Mr. Torres would literally kill him.
— Oh, to be able to have heard George's rendition of "Sexy Back" at "three in the morning!" We'll just have to go by Cristina's description.

My main complaint:
— Like last week, why was Bailey so underutilized? Now that Melinda Doolittle has stolen Chandra Wilson’s hairdo, I'll just have to pretend Melinda is Bailey on my Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

OK, I know I said this last week and then had to take it back due to ABC's change of plans: Next week is a repeat — “From a Whisper to a Scream.” This time I mean it. Really.

Then...
Thursday, April 5:
A repeat of "Don't Stand So Close To Me"
Thursday, April 12:
A clip show hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Thursday, April 19:
A new episode at last! See you then.

I think you are wrong about Izzie and George. They have been hinting about it for a bit. They ain't brother and sister. George told not just Meredith but also Izzie that way back when. Izzie was in the shower fantasy that kicked off the SuperBowl episode. When Izzie wasn't getting any from Alex and told George she wanted sex now, George joked that she could not have him but he was nodding yes. Izzie has never liked anyone George has dated. She checked him out when he came out of the room naked and was impressed. George's mom thought Izzie and George would be good. The divorce lawyer from last season thought they were a couple. Best friends can & do fall in love.

The closet scene spoke so much. Not just a mistake because regardless of feelings they made a huge mistake. George is married after all. But they were communicating without saying anything. This is in stark contrast to George's relationship with Callie. They do not communicate well at all.

Izzie is being selfish because she is in love with George. Guess what so was Callie when she agreed to marry George and suggested Vegas. Callie loves George and wanted to be married so she unknowingly took advantage of the horrible state George was in after his dad died. Callie did not have the objectivity to say "no, George not now, you need to deal & process your father dying".

A different issue, how do you think Bailley is going to get back at Mark for using her ideas? I can't wait!

At first, I was all "NO WAY" to George/Izzie, but after last night I'm thinking yes.

But only if he divorces Callie.

I was surprised to see Izzie so worked up about it, but with best friends it can happen

I'm thinking they might divorce George and Callie and Callie may find her was over to the spin-off series. Otherwise, how would the awkwardness resolve itself. If not the secret will eventually come out and that would be a never-ending storyline of Callie hates Izzie and George.

Not getting why everyone is so against the Izzie/George hookup, so I'm glad to see those that have posted before me are not so set against it. Don't take it so serious people, it's a tv show and if nothing happened except for what we want to happen, it would get boring really fast. The writers of this show have so much better imaginations than any of us and they know what they're doing!

I agree that the linen closet scenes had lots of unspoken subtlty as to mutual feelings between George/Izzy. Last week I wasn't sure about them, as I wished we could've seen more of a build-up, but now I'm not quite as skeptical.

tiffanyashland. I too was against the Gizzie thing at first, but last night in the flashbacks and the linen closet they sold me on the pairing. I hope it plays out well. I think Katie and TR have good chemistry.

yep still feel icky about what they did. But feel better now that they feel so guilty about it.
I guess because all we have heard from Izzie is..."Denny this and money and Denny and on and on...." And it was all okay till she started critisizing George for trying to be happy talking about how he didn't know what he wanted and was therefore wrong...then i had no love for her. But last night I was a little sympathetic. But mostly i was sad for Callie, cause when this goes down...it will be bad.

I did love derek tonight. he looked so scared. Sloane made me laugh. And I fall a little more in love with Alex every week. He's just amazing.

I agree with the previous posters. At first I was dubious about George and Izzie because I thought the only outcome of their hooking up could be a repeat of George/Mer, but now I'm completely on board. After a few minutes into the episode, I was just like, "Oh my... Izzie loves George!" And I'm sold. Her speech to Addison was hilarious, as was Addison's reaction. Hmm... Izzie = Addison 2.0? Perhaps.

The scene in the linen closet was by far one of the best ever done at Grey's Anatomy. I feel horrible for both George and Izzie and their circumstances now, and you know that this can't stay their secret for long. I mean, Callie slept with Sloan and that came round to George pretty quickly.

Cristina's "Be Kind, Rewind" was my favorite funny moment this episode. That's so absurdly hilarious.

And, finally, Alex talking to Jane Doe about Addison was great. I think I'm okay with Addisex not quite happening, if only because if you think about it, Alex would not be the doctor he is right now if it weren't for Addison. And that's just as satisfying to me, that she's had an impact on his seemingly unchangeable work ethic.

In summary: George and Izzie does not equal Ick Factor. In fact, I think I'll watch the episode again tonight when it's on. Especially since my DVR cut off the last minute (grr).

Adultery is always a mistake.

And George does love Callie. I think he feels like he betrayed his wife and his best friend - all at the same time.

And Izzie realizes that George needed her to be a friend - and she put her own needs ahead of his - after he asked her to be his friend - and she agreed.

Sorry everyone- still don't like it. Regardless of Izzie's feelings for George, I just really liked the 2 of them as friends. Not to mention I like Callie. I'm just so over the whole "they were best friends and fell in love" crap. I wish a show could stick to a man and woman being best friends without throwing in a romance.

Sloan cracks me up. I enoyed him so much last night, from the time with Jane Doe/Ava, to the scene with Bailey, to his "right now" approach to chief.

Who else here thinks Alex will fall for "Ava" only to have her significant other come back into the picture?

A few thoughts on this week's episode:
--First of all, SO well acted. The scene between George and Izzie in the linen closet; the look of utter love that Derek gave Mer at the end as they cuddled in bed; everything with Cristina and Burke.

--Glad that George told Izzie to keep quiet about what happened. He's absolutely right--if he's not ready to leave Callie, then telling her about the "mistake" would be nothing but hurtful. That said, this is one of those ticking timebombs that is going to come out someday, maybe soon.

--Interesting about Sloan taking Miranda's "right now" idea. Since she isn't up for the chief position, it wasn't as bad as it might have first seemed; it's not like he undercut her for a job. And maybe, if Sloan becomes chief, he'll promote Miranda to chief resident (goodness knows she deserves it!).

--Really enjoying the scenes between Alex and "Ava." I thought it was funny that one of the faces to choose from was "Elizabeth" (the actress's actual name), but wasn't the final choice. And yes, Ava definitely looks the most like Elizabeth Reaser (bye-bye, Saved!).

Finally--I can't WAIT for the next new episode!

After last week's episode, I decided to reserve judgement on the George/Izzie thing to see where they went with it. I was afraid they would go the same route as the Geo/Mer, so was immensely relieved they didn't. I've never been a huge Callie fan, so now I think I could be OK with a George/Izzie pairing, depending on how they resolved the Callie situation. Don't get me wrong, I love Sara Ramierz, and Callie is great when she's being a doctor, but there is something uncomfortable about the relationship she and George have that I can't put my finger on.

My favorite part in an episode chock full of favorite parts though was when Derek came in while Mer was studying on how to do that procedure, and he was so fun and flirty, and loving. I remember reading some posts somewhere after last week's episode asking why we never saw those kinds of scenes with them now that they are a couple, but that one was so sweet, it almost made me cry.

I agree, best friends can and do fall in love...my husband and I are the best example of that. But, George and Izzie have done it all wrong. I like the fact that Izzie approached Addison with her confession...and gotta love Addison's repsonse to STOP. It's not worth it. Also, I don't remember Izzie admitting she committed adultry...just that she had made a mistake, however Addison kept referring to it that way. Was she guessing or did I miss something? I will never get past the "wrong" way in which this came about.

Yes, I am TOTALLY loving Alex and "Ava" and grow more fond of him every day.

And....oooooohhhhh McDreamy...you are such a good man. I LOVE that even though Mere appears to be fine with her near-death and "dead mommy" expereicne, Derek still worries and that obviously affects his life (and potentially his future as Chief)...but THAT is what best friends in love is all about!!!

I appreciated that there was something that Christina couldn't fix (amputating the foot) and that she IS moving forward with Burke. I like them together!
