Just Like Old Times
Bailey and Derek, discussing hair products. Chandra Wilson, Patrick Dempsey by Richard Cartwright/ABC
Episode Recap: "Forever Young" (November 15, 2007)
Tonight, Bailey took charge and let the residents know there was a new boss in town, but she soon lost her drive when an old crush, Marcus (D.B. Woodside), appeared in the ER. So, while I was excited to see the old Bailey laying down the law early on, I was equally disappointed to see her turn to mush for a guy who obviously used her all throughout high school. And so we had our theme for the night---Seattle Grace is just like high school!
While George and Izzie did their best to avoid each other tonight, rumors regarding their rocky relationship kept cropping up everywhere. I have to admit, watching Izzie confront George by saying, "I heard we broke-up," certainly took me back to my school days. Sure, the hallway dramas back then were painful to watch and even more painful to be a part of, but a part of me found myself longing for those days again. Thanks for making me all sentimental, Shonda!
Of course, at every school there's usually some sort of clique hierarchy and with the schoolbus crash, there was plenty of evidence of that at the hospital. For that reason, my heart went out to Marissa (Madeline Zima), the young girl who obviously didn't fall in line with the "cool kids" and who ended up losing her one best friend, Danny (Stephen Sowan). My question is this: Did Derek really have to tell her in the waiting area that Danny would never wake from his coma? Surely, he could have taken her to a more private place to give her that kind of news, especially when it was so obvious that there plenty of prying eyes around them! On the other hand, it was nice that Izzie tried to comfort Marissa by assuring her that she would get through this difficult time and that no one would know better than her, because she was once the "girl in cheap clothes..."
Meanwhile, Meredith and Lexie had a rough night of their own. When Mr. Grey showed up at the hospital, he was definitely drunk and full of heartfelt apologies and compliments for Meredith. I even found myself thinking this was a turning point for the two of them, a chance for them to reconnect and heal old wounds. Alas, that was not the case, as Lexie later shattered my hopes by telling Meredith this behavior was typical of her father and that it was basically meaningless.
Once again, infusing a little humor and lightheartedness into the evening was Mark! Perhaps the most classic moment came when Mark thought two young girls were checking him out in the cafeteria. He suggested that females have been ogling over him since he was a kid and that it still continues. So, how funny was it that when he called his would-be admirers over, the truth was they were only staring and smiling at him because they reminded them of the one girl's dad?
There were plenty of other feel good moments tonight, though. Watching the Chief take on a protective, fatherly role for Meredith was heart-warming and the fact that Dr. Hahn finally paged Cristina for her assistance was a small, but also gigantic step for the two of them on both a personal and professional level. And while George insinuated to Bailey that Marcus deserved "a long speech," it was a very revealing moment when she chose to unleash her anger on Derek, with his "hair products," instead. Who would have guessed that Derek was once a scrawny band geek with acne? Oh, wait, that does sound familiar, now that I think about it...Can't Buy Me Love anyone?
I'm also really glad that things didn't progress between Derek and Sydney, but it looks like Rose (Lauren Stamile) is going to give Meredith some serious competition...
What did all of you think about tonight's episode? Was Bailey really out of character tonight? Is Rose just a bit too much like Meredith? Let me know!

I think it was out of character for Bailey but also true to the situation. I know from personal experience that no matter how much I accomplish or how much confidence I gain when I run into people from my high school days, I revert right back to my shy quiet wall flower persona. So I could feel what she was going through.

When is this Rose BS over? Then I will watch again.

You wouldn't think that what was once such an original and stimulating show would have to resort to the tired old storyline of constantly throwing roadblocks in the path of one of TV's greatest couples ever! Factor in all that season 3 nonsense, Gizzie (which thank God appears to be over), an obnoxious and extremely unappealing Dr. Hahn, the absence of Burke, and only 4 episodes left due to the strike and where that will probably leave us with Rose...well...I can't torture myself anymore. Maybe I'm too invested in Meredith and Derek...but that was what was expected, right?

I thought the speech/vent session that Bailey had with Derek at the end of the show was one of the best few lines of television I have heard in a long time. The writers managed to sum of my high school experinece in about one minute!!!
the only other comment that I have is regarding Derek. Does anyone else feel that he is just a little too perfect? Some of the stuff he says makes me wonder if any gyu would really say that??

Thought the episode was great. Touched on so many levels the things that many of us (even the popular kids) dealt with in school. The vanity, shallowness, insecurity, not feeling 'hip' enough, etc. I think that Bailey did a fabulous job last night (per the norm for her) in conveying those emotions at the end as she unleashed on Derek. (emmy material!!!!) I was thankful, although it was difficult to watch, that she realized ~finally~ after all of these years what Marcus was really about. Painful..yes. But, honest
LOVED when Meredith took Derek's hand while they were sitting outside. Big step for her.
Not so sure about this Rose thing either. Just hate to see the boat rocked, I guess (anymore than it normally is).
Dr. Hahn..they are going to have to do something with her real soon because I am not enjoying her at all. In fact, don't shoot me but, I miss Burke! Big time!!!!!
Also really digging the comradery between Derek and Mark these days. "Hey, Dad, want to go have a drink?"

I actually like the addition of Dr Hahn. Another strong female personality! I do not miss Burke at all. I like the storyline with Cristina and Hahn, it makes things more interesting. And I really like the growing friendship between Callie and Cristina!
Could not be happier that Gizzie looks OVER!! That was the worst story line that this show presented. It would be great if they can go back to being best friends. It looked like it at the end. I love them as friends but they grossed me out as lovers.
I hope that the whole Rose thing just brings Meredith to her senses.
They certainly showed a different side of Baily. While I understand the reason and how people can revert back to their old personalities.. it didn't seem to fit her. I kept waiting for her to give that stupid guy one of her fabulous tongue lashings!! And then Derek got it.. (which was great too!!).
I am liking Mark more and more and I hope that they give him more to do soon.
Glad Lexie told Meredith off and wiped that superior almost smirk off her face. I could see Lexies anger and frustration just boiling over when Meredith turned away!!!! I was waiting for her to JUMP her! ">
Really felt for Marissa. I cannot imagine how it would feel to lose a best friend.

Respectfully, the proper word is clique, not 'click.' See first sentence of the third paragraph.

I've only been half watching, but wasn't it implied a few episodes back that Callie was pregnant?

AmyK, I've been saying that all along. Derek to me comes across as one of those guys who is a real charmer, but can't stand to be alone. When he walked out on Addy in NY (the flashback?) he immediately took up with Mer when he moved to Seattle. Now he professes his love for her while he sport dates. I'm hoping that, in whatever the fall out is, there will be some sort of realization of that and he himself will deal with his own issues, b/c right now I'm seeing him settling with Rose while exchanging more of those longing looks with Meredith, a la season 2 when he and Addy got back together.
Im really liking the cameraderie between Hahn, Dark and Webber.

No. Patience. For. This. I love Grey's, but this is nuts. If I am ever sick, Lord save me from being taken to a hospital like SGH. There is hardly a grown up in the place.
I adore Izzie, but really, grow up! This Gizzie think has made two good doctors into total idiots. They are both borderline inept.
Love Miranda, always, but I hated to see her reduced to the high school girl blithering. We need more Nazi and less band uniform.
Love Christina, always, but brown nosing? Oh, dear. If even Christina can be reduced to seeking to be teacher's pet, there is no hope for this show.
Biggest minus of the episode: none of the medical issues were really tied up. What happened with hot cheerleader and her broken butt? What about pencil-eye's parents and his death? Some of us care about the medical aspects of this show and the future of the patients of the week.
Biggest plus of the episode: Mark. I am amazed that he has developed the way he has (and he is SOOOO easy on the eyes). The non-verbal communication between him and Derek when Derek was with Sydney ("what the heck?) was the high point of the episode to me.
Help me, Shonda. Please get this back on track and acknowledge that residents in a major metropolitan hospital can't possibly act like this and function...at least not without a LOT more M&M hearings....

Loved this epidsode! I loved how Bailey screamed to the residents "Grow up" then turned into a giggly little school girl herself. I loved Lexi putting Merideth in her place, but I loved Alex putting Lexi in HER place! Classic. And I loved that Derek let Bailey know he was a band geek too. He was the saxaphone, she was the obo...I was the flute! And wasn't it great how real life (Can't Buy Me Love) made it ring true for us. But most of all, the way "Mandy" acted with Marcus made my heart hurt...I was the girl doing the Class President/Captain of the Football Team's homework and getting little more than a pat on the head as a thank you. Oh how I wasted my time pining away for that stupid boy! My Mom gave me a pillow that said "A Boy who makes you cry is not worth it...and the Boy who is won't make you cry" I still have that pillow...haven't found the boy though!

I actually enjoyed this episode. Rose only appeared briefly and people are already hating on her. I like the idea of Derek getting a new love interest. Mer and all her drama gets on my friggin nerves. All she has to offer Derek is good sex, and that's a shame!!Lexie showed more personality last night, and I actually enjoyed her knocking the wind out of Meredith. Sydney =funny. All in all I give this episode an 8.

I'm in love with Rose. I'd much rather sit in the bar gazing at Rose than go have sex with Meredith. What is Derek thinking? This addiction to her is not good for him.
Hoping Gizzie is over. Yawn
I agree with what others have said, I'm really enjoying Mark.

Probably my favorite episode this year. A good mix of humor and drama. I'm sick of Izzy crying. Meredith and Derek will probably have an on and off again relationship forever which is fine. That can happen when there's that much chemistry and intense feelings. I can relate to that type of relationship. They better not fall in love with anyone else though or I'm done with this show.
