January 25, 2007: Great Expectations
After seeing the coming attractions last week, in which the announcer emphasized the "last five minutes," I had — just like the title of tonight's episode — "Great Expectations," and I was not disappointed. Two of our favorite gals were proposed to simultaneously, thanks to effective editing, and neither of them gave their answers... at least, not until next week. Will Cristina say yes to Burke? Will Callie say yes to George? Can't see why either of them would say no. But the last five minutes also included Izzie offering to give Bailey some of her eight million dollars to pay for the free clinic Bailey is striving for, if it's called the Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic, of course. I was already loving Bailey for being so kind to Izzie when she saw Izzie crying after hugging George: "He gonna be OK?" I've said it before, and I'll say it again: When "the Nazi" shows her soft side, I lose it. After last week, we knew Bailey respected Izzie so this new business relationship will be worthwhile.
After weeks of unsubstantial dialogue between Meredith and Derek, it was a treat tonight to see the two of them discuss something besides her snoring and his halitosis. I absolutely loved when Der explained to Mer at the end that she should get used to them having a lover's spat once in a while, but to always expect him to come back. "From now on, you can expect that I'm gonna show up. Even if I yell. Even if you yell. I'm always gonna show up. OK?" Derek sure seemed pissed earlier, though. To think — Mark Sloan could've been out of his life, but Meredith (the "chatty girlfriend") just had to tell Sloan about the Chief resigning ("rumor has it").
Speaking of the Chief resigning, it wasn't a shocker at all that Adele had already moved on with her life. Too late, Richard. Just when we were guessing who would take the Chief's place, we can now expect that he won't be going anywhere for a while. But it was fun to guess between Burke, Derek, Addison and Sloan (and that's the guessing order I placed them in) as to who would replace him. Terrific scene between the Chief and Bailey when he told her she'd be Chief some day, but until then she had better get their signatures for her proposal.
It was about time Cristina spoke up and told Burke "I'm in this for the long haul, I'm in this to finish the race." What better reason for Burke to answer with, "Marry me"? How about Cristina earlier with Callie? I laughed big time after Cristina said, "We are not friends," and asked Callie not to talk to her about George. Excellent comeback for Callie: "Forget it. I don't like you," and she gave her that look of hers that I love. The two of them make a great team of opposites, but yet they are so much alike as "tough cookies" that it was inevitable for Cristina to be impressed when Callie cut into the leg of that athlete Steve (Joe Holt) before his anesthesia kicked in. Ouch!
It was good to see Alex speak up to Addison — nice to see a male character on a TV show give that speech to a female character for a change. The "we don't need to sleep together" speech is usually given by a strong female character to a male character, so it was refreshing to hear it from Alex tonight. But you know it just made Addison more attracted to him.
The Amish story line was quite powerful, and I did not foresee it ending the way it did. Somehow, I didn't think Rachel (Rachel Boston), with her "cradle to grave" intentions, would end up being so supportive of Jillian (Jessica Stroup) going back to her parents, (Michael P. Byrne and Kathleen Mary Carthy). But I was so glad she did and, yes, it made me cry. (After last week, I'm not shy about admitting to getting teary-eyed, ya know what I mean?)
I'm glad the "George as a sex machine" plot was short-lived. It seemed rather out of character, but then, we know George had to do something to keep his mind off the grief. Such a beautiful scene with George telling Callie he even loves to look at her. But the scene between George and Izzie toward the end was probably my favorite of the hour, since it was such an awesome moment between best friends. Izzie: "Life is short, George. Life is short and it sucks a lot of the time." Ain't it the truth? I don't know what I'd do without my friends.
By the way, thanks so much for all of the wonderful comments last week. There are a lot of you out there who have lost one of your parents as George did, so my heart goes out to all of you.

My favorite line last night was "Nazi's back". I loved the way Der grinned when he said that. (Seriously, HOW did we not realize how gorgeous Patrick Dempsey was earlier?!!) The Amish storyline was very touching. I'm glad the chief's not resigning, I adore him. Especially after he told Bailey that he considered her to be next in line for it, she just wasn't ready yet. I can TOTALLY see our Bailey running the show!!! Solid ep!!

I LOVED the scene with the four attendings sitting on the floor and Bailey telling them she needed something to believe in since she stopped believing in them! What an awesome scene!
(My first post ever! Woo-hoo!)

I missed your telling us from what show we might have known Rachel. It was bugging me through the entire show.Even though you didn't spell it out, you gave us a link to another page that answered the question. She played Beth on American Dreams. Thanks for the great commentary!

It was an all-around great episode. I love how Burke threw a dinner party and only made enough food for three. That scene was one of my favorites, I think. The "Nazi's back" line was terrific and so true. But wow- two proposals? My satalite information guide told me, "An intern will recieve a proposal." I did not think it was going to be a marriage proposal and that another character was going to recieve one as well! I think it's a little too early for George and Callie- she may turn him down, though you never know. I can't even try to guess what Christina's reaction will be!
See you here next week!

What a great episode! They keep getting better. The puritans storyline was powerful in so many ways. I cried all the way! Callie and Cristina were fantastic.
By the way, the scene were George proposed to Callie should win her an emmy nod. The changes in her faces were so incredible yet subtle. Amazing actress!
The whole proposals montage was fascinating and surprising. When Burke, with his cool yet frightening demeanor, simply said marry me... I jumped on my seat!
This is the best show on tv! PERIOD!

Wow great episode....The scene with the Amish parents telling Rachel that they were going to tell her parents that she has grown into a beautiful woman brought me to tears...on the other hand, the scene with Sloan, Burke, Derek and Addison sitting on the floor talking like the interns had me laughing. Two proposals!! Who is going to say yes?? I can't say enough about this show, February is going to be a great sweeps month!!

Soaps occasionally recast roles with a simple "The role of Dr. Burke is now played by..." I think the producers can simply go with their second choice. With the number of recently cancelled shows or killed of characters, just think of the possibilities:
Dr Taye (Daybreak) Burke Dr Eko (Lost) Burke Dr Curtis (24) Burke Dr Chi (The 9) Burke
The list could go on... but who do you think would be a good recast candidate?

I love this show, love everything about it. And I think I'm the only one that was excited that Sloan is leaving. He's wasted talent, his storyline is dumb!
*********************************** I may be the one of the few out there but this whole Knight/Washington thing is being blown out of the water.
Everything we read is gossip. The only people that know what happend on set are the ones that were there.
Everyone knows that journalists and media like to twist and turn until they can get someone to say just those small words that make everyone else mad. Who knows what was said in the interview with Washington.
And now this is really bugging me, but why...why do actors and actresses need to "come out". Do we really care? Are we going to stop watching the show because of one persons sexual orientation. I don't mean this to be rude but who really cares if TR Knight is gay, more power to him, no need to broadcast it to everyone. He is still a wonderful actor, regardless of what he does at home.
I would hate to see Washington loose his job over all of this!

MtmMom, I couldn't go to sleep last night until I figured out how I knew Rachel, it was driving me crazy. I called my sister and friend but nobody knew. Finally I got an answer after I posted the question on the message boards. I loved American Dreams so it was great to see Beth again.... LOVED the episode!! I think Callie says yes and Christina says no. I can't imagine Christina marrying, she is too independent.

Seeing Rachel Boston again made me miss American Dreams all over again. That was a great show which didn't get a proper good bye.
Anyway, I think Callie's probably going to say no. George is emotional because of his father's death, and she might feel like it's the grief speaking. Then again, she wouldn't want to hurt him in his time of need. Can't wait to find out.

First loved the show last night! Loved the proposals, and Meredith/Derek s/l! No recasts please, the cast is perfect the way it is, I have always hated that about daytime soaps, it's never the same when they try to replace someone! I agree who cares what they do in their personal lives they are all good actors, let Isaiah and T.R handle this privately!
