January 11, 2007: Six Days, Part 1
The title of tonight's episode was "Six Days." But it's been a long six weeks since we've had the privilege of a new episode. I've missed my Grey Thursdays. Do you agree with me that it was worth the wait? First things first — it's about frickin' time Izzie deposited that check! I loved George saying to her, after the check fell off the fridge yet again: "I just dropped 8.7 million dollars on the floor. You need to deposit that check!" I imagined hearing millions of homes screaming: "Yes!" So it was quite appropriate for Izzie to be so hysterical at the bank toward the end, loudly crying: "I'm supposed to do something good! Can you just deposit it already?" Since this was part one of a two-parter, I think it's pretty obvious that Izzie will use some of the money to pay for patient Heather's expensive spine-straightening surgery next week, especially since Heather's insurance won't cover it. ABC likes to give the fabulous Mae Whitman from Arrested Development work — first Desperate Housewives earlier this season and now Grey’s as Heather. Only the best shows for Mae, if you may. She had some funny lines tonight, like saying to Izzie, "Life doesn’t suck for pretty people," or after Derek said he’d straighten her spine, "It's not nice to mock crippled kids." Judith Hoag kicked butt as Heather's mother, frustrated with her insurance company. Come on Izzie, do something good. Katherine Heigl certainly did something more than good — that scene at the bank was fantastic.
So Meredith is McSnorey, and Derek has bad morning breath. That had to be really unfortunate for Meredith to wake up and find Derek in George's bed (without George, of course) — anything to escape Meredith's buzz-saw snoring. Izzie was hilarious walking by with the revelation that Derek sleeps on the couch and then sets the alarm so he can get back into bed with Meredith before she wakes up. Great final scene with Derek's eyes wide open in bed while Meredith snored away (even with a Breathe Right strip on her nose), after the music video-like montage of shots of each character reflecting on what had just transpired.
My favorite line of the night was Chandra Wilson's Bailey describing Derek Shepherd to Callie: "Lots of hair, too many women, likes elevators and long walks on the beach." Brilliant. But nothing's funnier than Sara Ramirez's Callie staring someone down! I was impressed that Bailey revealed one of her secrets to Callie on getting things done, especially regarding Derek: "Stare him down!" Perfect way to get Derek to perform the risky spine surgery. But it didn't work on George, and that was the funniest part. George: "You're scaring me." So glad he finally came to his senses and kissed Callie out of excitement after listening to Burke, who told him to "watch the kidneys!" via checking the status of his dad's urine bag.
How many of you got teary-eyed like I did when Meredith comforted George? I lost it after she walked up to him and said, "You need to breathe," and he grabbed her arm and said: "He's my dad.... He's my dad." Meredith: "I know." T.R. Knight’s scene with George Dzundza as George tells his father to "stop acting like you're dying" was also awesome, with George calling his dad a "dog murderer," but with a smile. And Debra Monk as George's mother can make any scene she's in even better just by being present and giving one of those motherly looks (as she did when George kissed Callie).
While I'm mentioning parents, Jeff Perry as Meredith's "ex-father" Thatcher could recite the phone book, and it would be an Emmy-caliber reading. It's nice when Meredith is able to talk to Webber about her parents, so it was worthwhile for the two of them to bond about Thatcher. Webber: "He's not a big fan of mine." Meredith: "He's not a big fan of mine either." I've mentioned it before, and I'll expand a bit: I grew up going to Steppenwolf Theatre plays in Chicago, so I got to see Jeff Perry be phenomenal in many plays, along with original ensemble members (take a deep breath because this list is long): Laurie Metcalf, John Malkovich, Joan Allen, Gary Sinise, John Mahoney, Glenne Headley, Tom Irwin, Rondi Reed, Moira Harris, Terry Kinney and so many others. Sorry for treating the "so many others" like the Professor and Mary Ann in the first season of Gilligan’s Island ("...and the rest"). But I digress. Anytime I see any of them do anything, I'm ecstatic and it reminds me of my childhood.
OK — back to the show. We figured Cristina and Burke would stay together after she got onto the elevator in the last episode, so it wasn't a surprise to hear Burke say "it's not over" to Addison, but how oh-so-Cristina-and-Burke for them to be playing a game of "Say Uncle" since the winner has "all the power." Nobody's more power-hungry than Cristina and Burke, but I agree with how Addison summed it up to Burke: "Pathetic."
Speaking of Addison, it would've been more effective to see Addison and Alex attempt to kiss before getting interrupted by some random nurse had ABC not used that moment in the promos for the episode. Ugh! You with me here, people? ABC — please stop spoiling us in your promos and coming attractions! I did enjoy the dialogue leading up to the almost-kiss with Alex admitting to Addison that he bought the vanilla latte for Sloan (that Sloan hated) on purpose "because he was rude to you," followed quickly by an "I wanna do ya" facial expression. All that scene needed was some cheap porno music played in the background (you know the kind) to get them in the mood. Damn that random nurse.
Can't wait for part two next week. In the meantime, congrats to Patrick Dempsey for winning for Favorite TV Actor at the People's Choice Awards this week. And even better, congrats to Grey's Anatomy for beating CSI for Favorite TV Drama in an awards show that was broadcast on CBS — CSI’s network. Now that's got to suck for them.

The SCARE DOWN as I'm calling it was too funny. She looked insane and I loved it. Callie is just such a wonderful character.
The second best light moment of the night was The Pee Pee Dance George and Callie did when Mr. O'Malley urinated. I love Callie's dancing body but I worry that they will turn her into the Ellen of Grey's Anatomy with all the dancing sequences.
My Top Cry Moment... (shut it, a guy can cry) was George walking out of his Dad's room and Meredith coming out telling him to breathe. He clutches her arm and they have that "He's My Dad" "I know" moment and I was crying like someone had just killed my cat.
I wrote more over on my blog if you want to check it out.
Cannot wait until next week! I frakkin love me some Grey's.

Woohoo! A new Grey's!
Callie's staredown of George made the long wait for a new ep worthwhile! That was hilarious!
Katherine Heigl continues to blow me away with her acting. I don't understand why she seems to get fewer kudos than the rest of the cast because I think she's just phenomenal.
And I completely agree about Jeff Perry. There is something so sympathetic and moving about the way he portrays Thatcher.
I loved it that George warned his family before they saw his dad, but it was he, the doctor, who was most upset. That scene with Meredith was a total snifflefest!
George was just awesome in all his scenes--with the wonderful Dzundza, Izzy and the check, Callie and Meredith, even in the scenes with Burke.
And oh my, "pathetic" Burke and Christina were hilarious. Go Addison and Alex!!!
Ah heck, obviously I loved every minute and can just stop rambling!

It's been so long since I've seen a new episode that I was confused on WHY Addison was taking the crap McSteamy was dishing out "for this week". Is there some special significance to this week for him we don't know about or did she do something to him in the last episode I'm not remembering? SOOOOO glad this show's back. I missed it.

Personally, I was disappointed in this episode. I thought it was waaaay to corny and obvious. Especially the part with the insurance company. So predictable. My husband watched the show with me for once and he was confused as to why I like the show so much.

Wow Dave, thank you for the scoop on Mae Whitman. I KNEW she looked familiar, but couldn't place her. Made me remember how much I miss AD. I really thought the baby was gonna die and Thatcher & Meredith would bond, but I'm glad that didn't happen. George was awesome last night - his scenes with Callie were great ( their happy dance with cracked me up!) Also loved how Cristina kept trying to get random people to ask Burke about his hand!

From the preview for next week’s Grey’s, it looks like the “not this week” hostility between Addison and McSteamy will be explained. I loved last night’s episode. Why is it that Grey’s always makes me cry and laugh at the same time. And I’m not talking about the pretty little single tear kind of cry, oh no I’m talking about the stomach spasming, full body kind of sob. You’d think I would have given up because this show effects me so much, but mid-cry there are these moments of such hilarity that I just can’t turn away. The pee celebration dance, the “Say Uncle” test of wills, Callie and the stare down. I just love it. And I can’t wait until next week.

Loved, loved, LOVED this ep. Loved Bailey showing Callie how to stare down Derek, loved Callie actually staring him down, loved [and laughed hysterically] when Callie tried to stare down George and scared him. Loved George trying to get Izzy to deposit the check and her responding "if you're nice to me, I'll give you a ride to work." Loved Mere telling Derek about his morning breath and him going to brush. Loved George and Callie's dance and his family's confusion about said dance. Loved Alex finally standing up [a little] to Sloan and loved him almost kissing Addison. I'm telling you, those two are going to have some super steamy sex one of these days!! Loved Burktina. Loved Heather and Izzy's interactions. Loved how this ep made me laugh, cry, scream and darn near jump up and down. Can't wait for next week!

I had forgotten how funny it was when McDreamy backed down from Callie's stare after Bailey gave her the stare-down tip ("Loves elevators and long walks on the beach..." LOL!). He just caved...it was so cute. For more of my thoughts on this episode, please check out my TVGuide.com blog: TV's Silver Linings.

This was a laugh-out-loud, tear-jerker night for me all around (coming off the end of Ugly Betty)...I cried in the first scene when Meredith looked over her surgical mask to see her father in the hallway - don't know why it affected me that way...it just did. I loved the war of wills between Cristina and Burke and as someone else mentioned, how she kept getting other people to ask about his hand...even "syph nurse" Olivia! And how sweet was it for Cristina to pick up the slack in presenting the information about the baby when Meredith couldn't get the words out - then to ask Meredith to get the dirt on Burke! LOL!
Loved the O'Malley family scenes...for once, the brothers were not too annoying but great that George was the one who got worked up after seeing his dad with the tubes and the surgery scars - and loved his "dog murderer" line!
Izzie continues to be so great...loved her line to the back surgery patient about how her fiance had died and she (Izzie) wasn'g quite right so she would not be performing surgery on the girl. And she WILL use her millions for "the good" to pay for her surgery and follow-up/recovery.
Loved Bailey showing the "stare" to Callie and Callie using it on Derek & George...with VERY mixed results...and finally Callie and George dancing and kissing...
Lots of tears and laughter - so glad to have Grey's back!!!

I'm a fan of CSI over Grey's- But since CSI was on rerun last night I was able to catch this episode.
I like the possibility of the Addison/Alex pairing, but beyond that Grey's is almost getting to soapy for me to enjoy. While I was thinking that I might enjoy Addison/Alex I also felt that I should not get too attached, because check out the revolving door of relationships on this show:
Alex/Izzie, George/Meredith, George/Olivia, Meredith/Derek, Derek/Addison, Addison/Mark, Alex/Olivia, Burke/Christina, Mark/Callie, George/Callie....
And this is just the staff!

Ok - I LOVED this episode. But did I miss something??? I too caught the whole thing about Addison having had an abortion, or at least that's what I gathered from what she said to Mark. But had this been brought up before??? I can't imagine I missed that, since I've watched every episode twice this season!!! Anyone???

I have a question for everyone, last night when Callie was asking advice on how to approach McDreamy about a consult, she referred to her self as an ortho resident. I thought she was an attending, because she always had the interns working with her on cases. And speaking of that, when are we going to move onto a new "year" so all the guys can move on from their intern year and finally be residents?????
