A Gentleman's Evening
Monopoly anyone? Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey by Ron Tom/ABC
Episode Recap: "Kung Fu Fighting" (November 1st, 2007)
Well, tonight wasn't exactly the evening I had anticipated at Seattle Grace, but it was still a fun night. The highlight of which, was every scene shared by Derek and Mark, as they tried to decipher what the Chief meant by "a gentleman's evening." It did sound dirty and with three eligible bachelors in attendance, it certainly had the potential to involve tassels. So, I can't help but wonder how it might have ended up, if Dr. Hahn had not crashed the party.
And while we're on the subject of Dr. Hahn, I have to say, I'm having a hard time adjusting to her cut-throat style. I realize she's a no-nonsense type of person, but cutting Cristina out of that heart surgery tonight was just cruel. Especially when it was Cristina that provided the answer to how they could operate on Mr. Arnold (Cullen Douglas), avoid using the anesthesia he was allergic to and ultimately save his life. Okay, so some credit does belong to Izzie here. After all, she did take the time to think about how Mr. Arnold would feel in that OR and she knew to hide the monitors, so that he couldn't see the actual surgery being performed on him. Heck, she even thought to post a picture of an ivory-billed woodpecker on his drip bag, just to help keep him focused on his goals. And then there was also that great idea she got to calm Mr. Arnold down, after he realized he was being watched by a multitude of doctors. Her suggestion to compare the docs to birds worked like a charm and he was right on the money with his choices. My favorite analogy was Cristina being compared to a purple sandpiper, who according to him is known for being a tough bird and a survivor.
As for the ladies fighting to hold on to the wedding dress tonight in order to win a $100,000 wedding package, well, I give them props for their determination, but come on! If you end up in a bloody mess at the ER with a dislocated shoulder and other injuries, is it really worth it? Sounds like Cristina needs to use her psych book to do a little analyzing for those two. Though I will say this sub-plot did lend itself to a nice monologue from Callie: "You shouldn't have to fight this hard for a wedding. You fight this hard for a marriage. You need to know when to let go! Just let go!" You tell 'em, Callie! And I was also glad to hear Callie tell George that she was ready to let go of "them," too.
I also need to mention that it was great to see David Denman as Rick, the barely injured sky-diver tonight. David, also known as Roy in The Office, happens to be one of my TV crushes, so it was a nice surprise to see him in this episode. Missed the scruffy look he usually has going though.
And on another note, it was interesting to see that George and Izzie failed to connect in the bedroom tonight, despite their "hot" plans to do so, from earlier in the day. Izzie broke down into tears from exhaustion (courtesy of the open-heart surgery she participated in), and George agreed that he too, wasn't up for a night of romping (due to his tired arm). I don't doubt that Izzie really was drained or that George's arm was sore, but I also think there's more going on here than that, and dare I say it, this could be the turning point where we finally start to see their romance unravel!
So, what did all of you think of tonight's episode? Do you think Cristina will ever be able to get into Dr. Hahn's good graces? Will Gizzie fall apart now? Let me know your thoughts!

Gizzie has 1 month to die before I officially give up Grey's...it is getting ridiculous. Though I almost hope the Hector who's his face who played Callie's father comes back to put the smack down on George.
Seriously...does Hahn know that the last heart patient Izzie had she killed? Someone needs to tell her that!
Stupid Gizzie is ruining this show...

i was actually cringing during the final scene with izzie and george. i just can't take it anymore. they are so much better as friends and this plot is really taking away from my enjoyment of the rest of the show.
i have to say that i was hoping lexie and alex would get together since their scenes in the elevator two weeks ago. i'm slightly surprised it happened like it did, i didn't think lexie would be one to go for alex since he's not in a relationship but i guess i was wrong. im very interested to see where those two go

It was mentioned that Izzie did wonderful things for the heart patient during surgery, but the point, as I see it, is that had Christina been chosen instead of Izzie, that man could have died. Christina would never have thought of the things that Izzie did.
But my question is this...why in heck didn't those docs in the observation deck get out of there or turn off the light up there? Why didn't someone do something to shield the patient?
Loved the bachelor guys tonight and then playing Monopoly in the end was too funny.
I hated the wedding dress story.
The more I see Meredith droning on and on about poor me, help poor me, what is poor me going to do, etc....I wish she had drowned last year!! Cannot stand her. I don't even know if I'd like the actress as I've never seen her in anything else. But I sure have had my fill of Meredith!
Of course it's the beginning of the end of Izzie/George. That thing was over before it started, they just didn't know it. But I'm glad it happened just to free up Callie for more adult situations.
I loved Alex telling Lexie that he was a bad boy. Oh yeah.

Can they fix Meredith and Derek yet? Just have her tell Derek what she told Cristina, how hard is that?
This contrived triangles crap of them not talking is so old. Its bringing down the rest of the show.

I don't know why Hahn has such a problem with Cristina, since she told her last year that she reminded her of herself. It was good that Izzie was able to help the patient get over his anxiety, but I agree with Pinkie--couldn't the docs hear his panicking and do something? (Hey, Pinkie!)
I like George, and mostly like Izzie, but hate them as a couple. I loved their "best friends" relationship, like Callie, and had hoped that she would help George grow up.
I'm not sure what I think of Alex and Lexie (if I liked smushed names, Alexie would be perfect), especially since "Ava" was back last week. I like Lexie, but it seems as though she takes after her sister in making possibly unwise choices.

I wish they had a better story line for George and Izzy. I've wanted them to be a couple since the show started, but the writers are turning it into anything but a love story.
I was very proud of Callie's character tonight. More people need that kind of advice....know when it's time to just let go.
I loved the McDreamy McSteamy stuff, they have really made the show fun to watch.
Too bad the show's named "Grey's" because I think Meredith needs to fall down an elevator shaft soon. She ached for Derek for so long and now that she's got him, she doesn't know what to do with him.

Ianthony writes that someone should tell Hahn about the heart patient that Izzie killed, but I would think that Hahn might already know something about this since Denny's heart for the transplant was stolen from Hahn at a different hospital.
Brooke Smith is a great addition to the show. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. The only thing that bothers me is that she is playing basically the same character here as she did on Crossing Jordan ... it is a great contrasting character to the others in the show, but still the same person.
Meanwhile I am tried of Izzie and George, I'm tired of Meredith's dourness and fatalism. Mostly I want more of Bailey and Callie. Right now they are my favorite characters.
Loved the bird watcher guy so astutely calling the chief a great blue heron. Works for me.

I truly love Grey's, but it's really frustrating. The story lines drive me crazy.
Meredith and Derek: Will they or won't they ever get together???? I'm tired of waiting and so would any guy be. Derek should find someone who really appreciates him.
Christina should stay in her own bed...she is no help.
Izzy and George seem more like a brother and sister than anything else.
I don't like Dr Hahn, she's too mean.
I really liked the banter between Mark and Derek, good comedy!!!

well I also liked the part where mar finally opened up to derek a bit. I hope more keeps coming as everyone knows she does love him and the scene in the room with christina where she said she can't stop thinking of derek and how it is more then just sex that its about what happens after and feeling safe.....Loved it...
mer also telling her patient to say what how he feels while he has the guts to do it was great.
wow alex moves pretty fast.. The whole thing with lexie wow but atleast it ain't derek.
Derek and Mark, I am glad they are starting to get beack to the friendship they had before. There scenes were awesome.
Gentle mens evening..... Different!!!!
Gizzie glad they didn't do it, it still feels so wrong.

How you can review tonight's show and not mention how fantastic Ellen Pompeo was is BEYOND me. I really felt her in the scene she had with Patrick Dempsey (Mer/Der's on call room) and when she finally is able not only to tell the skydiver that she felt unowrthy of someone's love, but when she explains her love for Derek to Christina, I was just so moved in a show that kind of lacked that emotional connection.
You have a lead on this show who was wonderfully understated and failed to mention her lovely work. Nice job. But at least the writers gave me some hope tonight that the Mer/Der story (though we will see the "anti Mer" coming soon) may just have that happy ending Shonda Rhimes said she was "rooting" for...that is unless the writers want to ruin it YET AGAIN!

Okay, I have to keep asking myself while I'm watching -- why am I still watching this??? The only parts I liked tonight were Callie and her giving the speech to the bride and convincing herself in the process. Might I mention to that Sara with makeup on is beautiful! She is very pretty! Loved the friendship aspects with Mark/Derek and Mark/Callie. Mark is really a good friend though despite his shortcomings. Also loved Bailey's short scenes, especially the tassels comment! She needs more time!!!
I don't like Hahn, never did and now I'm really convinced I don't. She makes Christina actually look emotional and personable! And if they go with Mark crushing on her, I'm going to gag! She is too manly for him! After all the classy women (Addison, Callie), and he pursues someone like her, no way! This show keeps going further and further out of it's way to get me to tune out!
Then there's Gizzie!! Kill it already now! Thank goodness they didn't have sex because I was feeling nauseous!!! Please just destroy it and move on! Then they move onto Alex & Lexie! No way! Ava just there last week and then bam, right out of left field! No sense whatsoever. So Ava comes back and then Lexie will probably be crushed because she will be hooked on him and where are we at -- another Derek & Mer? Quit repeating the same ol' same ol' every storyline and every couple! It's getting old!
And speaking of getting old, I am so tired of Meredith!! Derek should move on at this point or else try to drown himself in some water! This is even depressing me! I know she has issues, but come on, let's see some improvement or something!
I'm about ready to go back to reading on Thursday nights and turn off the show until the writing improves into a little more interesting and not the same old boring, depressing stuff or the same old make you sick storylines!
