February 15, 2007: Drowning on Dry Land

I don't know about you, but it seems like all I've thought about all week is Meredith floating in the water. Oh, sure, Anna Nicole entered my thoughts. Idol mania is starting up again. Oscar fever is abounding. But I just could not get that little girl's face — her blank stare — out of my mind. Are you with me here? Oh. My. God. I fricking love this show.

Let’s first talk about that ending! After Michael Ausiello and others let the cat out of the bag that Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) would soon be back in some way, shape or form, I was hoping it would be something logical — a dream sequence or a flashback. As long as it wasn't via a TV cliché like a long-lost twin arriving or that he wasn't actually dead. But Meredith temporarily dying and seeing him that way and also seeing the Kyle Chandler character Dylan Young from last season? Absolutely brilliant. Meredith: "Am I... dead?" Denny: "Damn right you are." Meredith: "Holy sh--." OK, we didn't hear her say the second word, but still... brilliant. Since I've basically admitted to being "the town crier," let me just stress to you that I bawled my eyes out nonstop the last 15 minutes. My roommate Jason to me: "Wow, you're a real mess." Then Jason joined me in the final 10 of those minutes. Shonda, I am just so fond-ah... your writing! Unbelievable.

It was such a collective effort in those final minutes when everyone was so emotional about Meredith being on her deathbed. One by one, as each person found out, via pager or by looking through the window, it just touched my heart. How about Mark Sloan sitting down next to Derek and putting his hand on Derek’s arm? Come on. How about Cristina, after repeatedly asking "Where's Meredith?" because she wanted so terribly to tell her about her being engaged to Burke, because "She's my person"? Her face after she found out made me lose it. Then there was George, after being so overjoyed when Callie confirmed that the 7-year-old John Doe was his patient's missing son Chris, he immediately got the page and walked out of the room. Next shot of George? Him crying. Projectile tears from me. Even Addison was distraught — even Addison! She looked over to the floor to see Mark sitting next to Derek. Right before that, I died when Burke asked Derek (after Derek told him the Chief threw him out): "What do you need?" Derek: "I need you to go in there."

But it wasn't just the last 15 minutes that defined how this show kicks ass so much — it was the whole hour. My cry-fest began with Alex coming to that husband-of-a-missing-pregnant-woman with two photos. I like that Alex first showed the guy the Jane Doe photo in hopes that she was his wife. Unfortunately, no. It was so horribly sad when the man recognized the dead woman in the second photo as his wife. George had better luck with his photo — great laughter-through-tears moment when he proclaimed to the entire room: "Callie O'Malley, I can't kiss you right now because you're scrubbed in, but tonight, when you get home, I am going — " Callie: "OK, people, let's focus. I'm working, George. I'm working."

Other highlights:
— The little girl (Madison Leisle) pointing to the water after Derek asked her: "Where is Meredith?"
— Sydney (Kali Rocha) offering to hug Alex.
— George telling Alex that Bailey might change her baby's middle name from George to Elvis or Tupperware. Alex: "Dramatic much?"
— Alex telling Addison: "I'd notice... if you went missing."
— Izzie's triumphant head-drilling and the fact that the Chief officially took her off probation.
— Cristina telling Izzie the "rock star": "You are a hero. I'm jealous. But where is Meredith?"
— The first time we got to see the little girl smile, after she finally saw her mother toward the end and the mother hugging her, saying: “Mommy's sorry she got lost!"

The only thing I didn't care for was Izzie, after being gallant and saying supportive things like, "I believe in the good," and, "Denny is always with me," telling George it was a mistake marrying Callie. Inappropriate much? Can we say poor timing? But that's a small complaint. I simply cannot wait until Part 3 next Thursday! Until then, please chime in....

It was totally awesome. I can't wait for "Some Kind of Miracle" and am totally hoping there is. She just can't be dead, can she? I'm so excited that they got Kyle Chandler back (I never thought they would even though Meredith seeing Dylan actually makes a bit of sense). Everybody's reactions after they found out about her were great (especially Cristina and George).
I love Izzie but hate how she's been acting towards Callie.

I've gotta believe she's ok and I thought about it last night. If the little lost girl was symbolic of where Meredith was at the moment, and she ended up ok, then Meredith should end up ok as well, right?

Of course it wasn't appropriate for Izzie to tell George it was a mistake but that is Izzie, I don't think she will back down. I just hope George sees Izzie is just trying to protect him and she loves him dearly.

Of course I wasn't shocked about Denny but I was surprised by Dylan Young returning which was nice. I do read spoilers but it is nice to be surprised also.

I loved Izzie overall, she is a wonderful character and I think Katie Heigl does a wonderful job portraying her. I honestly can't think of any other actress I would like to see as Izzie Stevens.

Of course Meredith will come back but I do wonder if this will cause any brain or body damage for awhile. I know they just did the hand thing with Burke but she was underwater for awhile.

I loved Cristina in this episode, alot more then usual with her need to tell Meredith the news. It isn't really real until you tell your best friend that you are engaged. I think by now Burke needs to be more understanding of Cristina.

Finally just want to say you are a rock star Izzie Stevens/Katie Heigl.

My favorite line of the season is... "If I eat a cup of butter and nobody sees I won't get fat". If only I lived in Izzieland cause I know if I eat a tub of ice cream and even if no body sees me sneaking the empty container into the garbage I'll still get fat! Izzie, while you might not get fat from a cup of butter, the butter honestly did go to your head cause it is never okay to tell your friend that their marriage is a mistake.

Great show though, I found I was fast forwarding it cause I just wanted to see what happens next! My only beef is if Meredith's injured patient was able to pull himself out of the water, why couldn't she do it?

The little girl I was expecting to find out she was austic or deaf in the end. My bad, she was just not allowed to talk to strangers I guess!

A totally engrossing show, but not without some "huh?" moments interrupting it.

Izzy's I Believe speech was pretty darn cheesy. You don't have the right to tell your best friend they shouldn't have married one person when their first love is at death's door.

I didn't quite understand that ALL those injured and dead people didn't have ID. No wallets? No tags on the body bags? But I did like that Alex found a way to help those waiting for info.

Sidney was the one who needed the hug from Alex. She finally got it, from a devastated family member. Very sad.

Last quibble--all those victims needing treatment and suddenly the entire surgical staff has the time to either treat Meredith or wait at the door. Except Callie O'Malley who was being slammed behind her back, the whole hospital seemed to stop working.

Well I don't know about the patient, I'm not sure we got a reason why he was in the water but if he jumped in the water or whatever he would have been more prepared for it then knocked into the water. Just a theory, I'm not sure if it holds water or not.

I think the little girl was just to frighten to say anything, at least I think that was what the writers were thinking though I'm not sure if I agree with them.

He jumped/fell from a burning ferry with a large gash on his leg and then swam and then pulled himself up on the pier instead of using the dock that McDreamy used and while Meredith was treating him, he was clearly in shock. Meredith gets knock over the pier lands in the water and remains conscious and is both unable to save herself but also appears to be the first victim of hypothermia we see! Come on, even Shonda go to admit they are taking a large creative license with that one!:^O

Wanna know how excited I was to see Dylan Young? After watching the episode for a second time, I pulled out my second season DVDs and watched the bomb episode. And Mer is one lucky girl. If I was dying and came to the afterlife welcomed by Kyle CHandler and Jeffery Dean Morgan, I'd be 'alright cool afterlife'. Did anyone else twitter with small laughter when they saw Dylan and realized, hey in your "afterlife" you work in 'Dillon' Texas. Anyone? Bueller?

I loved this episode. I loved that McSteamy went to comfort McDreamy. I love that Cristina is really close to a 'someone sedate me' freakout. I love that Alex found a way for the family's to know what was happening to their family members and that he is still so concerned about Jane Doe. I just hope that he isn't going to go all Izzy with her. That won't be cool people, won't be cool.

And Izzy, not a fan, not a fan. She is like those people that are so self-centered that everything is about them. Meredith is dying and she is talking about how George shouldn't have married Callie. I would have smacked her upside her head.

Other than Izzy, I loved this episode. Here's hoping that more Dylan and Denny are there next week.

It appeared to me that Meredith chose to drown. As self-centered as she is, that would not surprise me.

I, too, was dumbfounded that in the midst of a catastrophe, the entire staff was waiting on Meredith. That did not ring true, but did add to the drama of it all. I really loved the last scene. Very surprising to me, and I'm not easily surprised. Very well done.

Izzie....tasteless and ridiculous statement about George's marriage. Totally unwarranted and definitely out of place. The rest of her statement, however, was great.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the unidentified pregnant woman. We HAVE to know her story, don't we? I do.

Pinkie,
I agree with you! Meredith chose not to save herself and therefore chose to drown!

Unbelievable episode. I think I went through every emotion in the book.

The only thing that was a little clunky was Izzie's monologue. However, I like the fact that she told George that she made a mistake in marrying Callie. Not because I agree with her, but because I like the fact that characters that we like can act like jerks too.

Dylan showing up at the end? Classic.

Holy Moly! When I saw Kyle Chandler's face come into view at the end - I totally lost it. Meredith took the words out of my mouth - several times. Could you not just eat him up with a spoon?! Then Denny??!!!

Misting started with Derek's line to Burke and progressed to sniffling with Izzy's epiphany and cathartic outbreak and then a blubbering mess when Meredith woke up in limbo struggling for air and saw those guys.

Last weeks show was a little disappointing. I couldn't believe I was watching the second part of the same episode last night. I was riveted from beginning to end. Loved this episode! I am on the edge of my seat til next week.

Thank you Shonda!

That little girl was annoying to me. I was very pleased to see her reunite with her mother at the end and she finally showed emotion. Was she not talking because she was in shock? Or because of not talking to strangers?

The pregnant Jane Doe is Elizabeth Reaser and is supposed to be on for 9 episodes total. Alex has completely redeemed himself to me this season. He isn't such a jerk anymore.

As sad as it is to see Meredith in this situation, and to have her friends deal with it, I am somewhat glad that it is hitting Christina this hard. I find her very selfish and self-centered. I am glad she is having to deal with something of this magnitude so she can learn how to be human.

Loved the episode. I cried so much at the end - didn't Patrick Dempsey just break your heart? I also thought it was a bit ridiculous that everyone was working on Meredith and there were hurt people everywhere.

You know they'll bring Meredith back to life - the show is named after her!

Did I miss something with Izzie? Why does she hate Callie so much? I know she took her best friend away, but is she really that awful for George?

First off, nobody chooses to drown. She fell into the water fully clothed, you try swimming in pants and shoes, it's not so easy. She did pop up a few times and nobody was there to save her, except the lame girl who was so traumatized that she won't talk. The water is cold and saps the strength from you. Not surprised that she drowned, but how long was she down for, that is the real question.. They were working on her for over 20 mins. when she flatlined, this is not a good sign, especially since she saw Denny and Dillon. I wonder if she will remember when she awakens and can tell Izzie that he is ok.

Re: Izzie - While the timing of her statement to George about their marriage was awful, the bottom line is she is his friend and only wants the best for him. She doesn't think it is Callie, and honestly I agree. They have barely been dating, he freaked when she moved in, then his father dies and they get married. A totally desperate move.

I liked that Christina is finally showing some human reactions. Her best friend is dying and we see her take it all in. The same with Alex, those two were left behind because they were not "connecting" to their patients. Then we see Alex and the Jane Doe and we see how much he wants to help her, not just to show off. Then he finds a wonderful way to help the people whose loved ones are missing. Kudos to Alex, but why couldn't Syndey (who is trying to get a position of power) think of something instead of standing around looking at people. She is awful, I would have probably screamed at her to find a way to keep track of the missing victims.

I can't wait for the final part of this story as we all know that Mer won't come out of this unscathed.
