February 1, 2007: Wishin' and Hopin'

I enjoyed reading everyone's predictions last week regarding whether Cristina would say yes to Burke and whether Callie would say yes to George. I loved that we got one answer right away and the other one at the very end — George and Callie had gotten hitched in Las Vegas and Cristina gave Burke a "yes" under one condition: "I'm not wearing a ring." When Cristina put the ring on the counter at the end and told Burke: "I don't do rings," I was thinking she was rejecting his proposal — glad I was wrong.

I always like when our favorite interns and doctors relate to their patients, so it was nice that the boyfriend (Matt McTighe) who didn't know his girlfriend (Amanda Collins) had cancer blurted out that he didn’t know her middle name, causing George to ask Callie what her's was. One of the best lines of the episode was George at the end, after he told his roommates that Callie was the most important part of his life now: "Calliope Iphegenia Torres is my wife," which, you knew, would make Izzie laugh, hearing Callie's middle name for the first time. Izzie had, perhaps, the funniest line of all when she saw Callie's engagement ring: "Tiny diamonds are great because you know no one will ever try to steal it," followed by Cristina laughing.

How wonderful to watch Cristina and Burke actually speak to each other for a change. But the person I liked seeing Cristina talk to the most was Ellis, after Ellis regained her memory, albeit briefly. It was not surprising to see Cristina and Ellis bond, especially since we knew it was so hard for Meredith to communicate with her mother. Meredith to Cristina: "She has that effect on people who aren't her daughter." It made perfect sense for Cristina to ask Ellis if it was possible to have both — be a good surgeon and have a life. Ellis: "I didn't try hard enough." We knew that Ellis getting her memory back was temporary, but having her mother back even for a moment was excellent for Meredith's peace of mind. It also gave Ellen Pompeo a chance to showcase her absolute best acting ever on this show, in my opinion. Honestly, if you want proof, watch the episode again tonight at 8 pm/ET, or if it's still in your TiVo, go back and check it out. First, that scene where Meredith said to Ellis: "You wanna know why I'm so unfocused? So ordinary? You want to know what happened to me? You — you happened to me.” Phenomenal. But what sealed the deal for me, the scene that made me immediately think "Emmy" was when Meredith walked in at the end and got the worst-case scenario: She realized her mother's Alzheimer's disease had kicked back in. View the scene again and notice the tears welling up in Ellen Pompeo's eyes. No change of expression. Just instant tears. Emmy-worthy. I think even you Meredith non-fans might agree with me. Hmmm?

Other highlights:
— Bailey complaining to Izzie: "If I hear you mention eight million dollars one more time!"
— Bailey acting very motherly to her first patient at the clinic, the teenage girl (Jasmine DiAngelo) whose mother had died: "Stop having sex!"
— Alex, after hearing that George and Callie got married: "She's Callie O'Malley."
— The "I want you so badly" looks Alex and Addison gave each other, followed by Callie's comments to Addison.
— Addison getting her sexual frustration out at the end by sleeping with McSteamy: "I am actively not thinking about you... right... now."
— Meredith congratulating George for marrying Callie and the quick hug between the two of them.
— Richard trying to make Ellis feel better by pretending to wish they had stayed together, not mentioning his love for Adele. At least it briefly made Ellis smile.
— Watching some of the interns and doctors turn into patients after they breathed in the toxins from the "toxic woman," then later when several of them took 20-second turns going in during the surgery, desperately holding their breath.
— The woman waking up and her boyfriend calling her by her first and middle name: Marina Rose.
— Callie to George: "You thought our marriage was toxic?"
— Izzie referring to George: "He doesn't need us — he's got his Vegas show-wife."
— Cristina to Burke at the end: "Don't expect me to suddenly change. I'm a surgeon just like you. And we'll have money — we can hire a wife."

Since I've been admitting to being a cry baby lately, let me confess that I bawled my eyes out when Chandra Wilson won her SAG award last Sunday night. People, let me just stress to you all, she was competing against Edie Falco, Kyra Sedgwick, Patricia Arquette and Mariska Hargitay — all of whom are the lead actresses on their shows. Chandra is technically a "supporting" actress... and she won! I was ecstatic. The Grey’s cast deservingly getting best drama ensemble? Not a shocker since they were predicted to win. But Chandra winning? A pleasant surprise. We fans all know she kicks ass — now the world knows.

I loved this episode! It was hilarious and thrilling all together.
I'm surprised at how mean Izzie was to George and Callie. I didn't think Callie was hated that much?
The first scene in the clinic was hilarious! Izzie just staring at the door "Is there something wrong with her?" Then George and Callie walking in "Is there something wrong with him?" I laughed out loud when George giddied like a school girl "we're married" hahahaha
The animal magnetism Alex created with Addison last week made their interactions this week so friggin funny. She was totally looking at him like meat - Callie was so on point with the cartoon analogy.
Jaw dropping moment for me - When Ellis began yelling at Mer "What happened to you?" - When that scene was done I said out loud to myself "Ouch, that was harsh. Did she really just say that?"

This was a fantasic episode. I loved every second of it.
I can't wait until next week!! Bring on the 3 parter!

Oh, but this was one of the best hours of television I've watched in awhile. The first half-hour of the episode made me giggle like mad, especially Izzie staring at the door, her reaction to Callie/George, and, of course, Alex's: "Dude, she's Callie O'Malley." AND, Addison/Alex had a lot of tasty little lingering stares. Goodness. She does get the hots for man candy! And, I was getting all proud of her for steering clear of Mark, and there she goes again. I guess she's thinking that if she can't have Mark 2.0 (Alex), she really could just get the original. Ha!

And just when I thought Ellen Pompeo was just a solid actress that wouldn't stand out in a "Best..." category, she went and blew me away with her speech to her mom about being "ordinary." How freaking amazing was that. Love it so much.

What else, what else? Love Addison risking her health for Toxiny Blood Patient. Love her interaction with Callie. Love Richard, so much in this episode. And, of course, the lovely Chandra Wilson, for whom I did a ginormous happy dance when she won the SAG Award. It doesn't get much better.

What a great hour.

Loved this episode! It made me so sad when Meredith's mom berated her and told her she was ordinary and screamed,"what happened to you!" I can't even imagine...Anyone think Bailey might start spending most of her time heading up the clinic? I really enjoy her softer moments like with the teenage girl. Addision and Alex just need to hook up and get on with it already! Love the tension right now, though. What a great season so far!

I loved this episode too. I can't believe Izzie. She had some nerve! She moved very fast with Denny too. Anyway, you know who else ticked me off? That nurse. I don't know her name, but she slept with Alex and the whole STD thing. She was tryin to tell George how he should be acting since he got married. And I'm like, who are you? Well I'm done. I love this show!!!

There isn't much more I can add here that hasn't already been said.

This was another of those shows that only seemed to last about 20 minutes.....which is how I know right away that the show was excellent. When it was over, I said out loud in a room by myself.."now THAT was a goodie".

Wow, I loved this episode so much.

Did you notice that Derek was cold towards Meredith after her mother spoke to him? We'll see how that pans out later, I guess. As for Meredith, I'm one of those non-Pompeo fans, but I have to admit, she was great last night. Simply great.

My one disappointment was Addison sleeping with "McSteamy". I don't even think he's such a much anymore. Hated that. Made it so dirty and made Addison look like the wh*** I thought she was when she first came on the show. EW.

Otherwise, I loved every other scene. I can't say enough. I had a very enjoyable tv evening because Men In Trees was also wonderful! :)

Is it me or is Izzie jealous of Callie? She hasn't liked Callie when Callie is with George. When they were broken up, Izzie did not bag on Callie like she did when George & Callie started dating and also now that they are back together. Izzie checked out George's package in the last episode and was impressed not the typical response in a purely platonic relationship. Izzie and George are each other's best friend & in theory have a brother/sister relationship but sometimes especially how Izzie reacts you have to wonder.

I really enjoyed when Cristina accepted Burke's proposal. Seeing those two happy and laughing is such a nice contrast from the usually serious and somber couple. It was great to hear them laughing. I like broody Cristina, but joyous Cristina is great too!

Okay there really isn't much that I can say that hasn't been said except for one thing. I loved Mark in this episode. I love how he surprises you by the little things. I love how he actually has a chance to be chief which would actually give them a reason to keep him on.

I know you're asking what surprise but it was when they were all in the clinic with the o2 masks on. Mark was standing beside Addison and just rubbing her hair. It was such a tender moment and really showed that contrary to popular belief Mark really does have feelings.

Can't add a thing - great summary and great comments.

I would like a clarification, though. I thought Meredith's mother's name was Alice Grey?

Fabulous episode! Can the writers of this show get any better?? They knock my socks off weekly, but this week went above and beyond.

I agree, Ellen Pompeo showed some of her finest acting skills yet last night. I was truly impressed with her.

Izzie was so mean last night. Not only to Callie but to that young girl that came into the clinic. I was pretty frustrated with her.

Chandra Wilson winning the SAG award was the highlight of my week. I watched her acceptance speech three times and yes, I too, teared up when she won (after hooting and hollering in excitement!) She was so nervous and so genuine and I loved how she ended it, showing off her arms like that. What a cool and classy lady!

Two quick things:
1. Meredith's mom's name is Ellis, for the person who asked earlier. I remember cause that's the name of my ex's mom. And she's a b*tch too.
2. Best. Episode. Of. The. Season.
Love Grey's!!

My boyfriend and my dog despise me because for one hour I demand my time to watch Grey's Anatomy in peace and its so worth it!! I don't want to repeat what everyone has already been said, but the all the actors in this show never cease to amaze me. I hear that the next three episodes are gonna be better than the Super Bowl episodes and I can't wait!!

I don't think I can add anything to the comments that have already been made. One of the best hours of television so far this season - from storylines to the acting. Ellen Pompeo was absolutely incredible!!

And, congrats to Chandra Wilson. No one deserved that SAG more, and her acceptance speech moved me to tears (as did tonight's episode).

Excellent ep, as always. And boy, was I surprised when George showed up already married to "Callie O'Malley"! LOL.

I felt so bad for Meredith when her mother berated her for being "ordinary." Didn't anyone think to tell Ellis about Mer holding a BOMB in place last year so they could operate on a guy? That's not "ordinary" in my book! Sad, so sad. Wonderful acting by Ellen P.--I, too, was knocked out by the changes in her expressions when she realized Ellis had slipped away again.

And yes, Izzie was very annoying throughout. Thank goodness Dr. B. had the talk with the young girl--brought tears to my eyes.

Can't wait for next week!
